I thought I had read everything but boy, was I wrong. Forget What Color is Your Parachute and all the other job-hunting books out there. This is it, everybody. THIS IS THE ONE. A month after I read "Guide for the Pissed-Off Job Seeker," I was no longer pissed off! And that's 'cause I was no longer a Job Seeker! I had a job! A good job! And all because when I went on that interview after I read the book, I knew how to turn the interview on its head by asking The Question. "By what criteria will you select a person for this job?" Once I had the answers written down on my yellow legal pad, I knew what to say when my interviewer said, "now tell me about yourself." When I started talking, the words flowed like good wine. I knew how to match my skills to the crieria desired.

You will be amazed at how these guys, Zuckerman and Abel, take you through the job-search step-by-step, holding your hand at each stage of the process. Like getting in the door to get the information you need about a particular job, or industry, or field. And doing it without a resume!

They give you the structure and format and sample dialogue to appear bright, interested, focused, and dedicated, wherever and whenever you find yourself being interviewed. I must confess that while I was reading this and saying some of these things out loud, I kept thinking, "this is not me. This is definitely not me."

But once I found myself in front of the interviewer and mouthed the Guide's words as if I were an actor on stage, my interviewer became as rapt an audience as any job-seeker would wish.

I learned from this book how to tailor each and every resume according to the criteria desired so that I would have an 'inside-track resume' that would vault its way to the top of the pile. I learned how to write a different 'job objective' for each resume I submitted.

And last but not least, I learned how to write a thank-you letter that went beyond the usual cliches to really remind my interviewer of all the valuable skills he agreed I had when I made my presentation and sold myself for the job.

In a word, it's all about selling, say Zuckerman and Abel. So if you're still out there pissed-off and peddling the sidewalks looking for work, then may this book be the answer to your prayer, as it was to mine.

Instead of the usual here's-what-you-do-because-I-say-so book, here's an account of what happened to David Abel -- a pissed-off job-seeker with three strikes against him: Too old (early fifties) too qualified and too well paid.

At first, he does what everybody does -- sends out a lot of resumes. When nothing happens, he get's even angrier than when he was fired. The turning point comes when he decides he has nothing to lose, and turns that anger into some rather unorthodox ways of getting work.

Don't let the listing at Amazon fool you. It should read, By David Abel as told to Irv Zuckerman, instead of the jumble of names it now presents. But theire's no mistaking the title of the book itself.

I sought out this book because past reviews I'd read had said it accurately captured the feel of England in the late 1970s. This it does as well as provide an entertaining read, no mean feat for a 600-plus page tome on the birth of the English punk rock movement.

Irony abounds. The Sex Pistols, a ragtag group of petty criminals and anarchist wannabes, pressed just one album and five singles in their brief history yet gave rise to the punk movement and became national icons. The group was the spin-off of a clothing store and thus, a group nominally devoted to anarchy was in fact, a marketing ploy.

All the rest are here as well. Siouxsie and the Banshees. The Clash. Recommended. Holds your interest despite a length absurd for the subject at hand.

A MUST READ.......2007-03-08

The definitive book on Punk history, placing it in an historical context, very informative and well-written - inspiring to read.

Best Thing Since '77.......2006-06-29

Nothing like opening a review by stealing a quote from Gene October of Chelsea (at least, as quoted by Henry Rollins).

Without a doubt a large part of this book is focused on the history of the Sex Pistols from formation to implosion. The other figures of punk are there, though overshadowed and in the background. The Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Ramones..... all treated as walk-on extras in this history of Malcolm McLaren and his ego, and John Lydon and his evil twin Johnny Rotten. To some degree I have to agree with Lydon in the death throes of that final concert in America, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"

It is an intriguing story, thoroughly researched and well written. The listing of bands and tracks at the end of the book are a wonderful chance for those of us too young to remember the true first wave of punk to educate ourselves on the sound. All the same, the narrative itself gives a stilted view of the scene and the importance of one band. The rise and rapid fall of the Sex Pistols is an image of punk itself, and they were at the center of the maelstrom, but there were bands that outlived the summer of '78. The focus stays largely on England, with only passing nods to New York, Cleveland and LA. Out of LA, Salt Lake and DC would rise the second wave from the ashes, their fires stoked by the pioneers. And out of punk would splinter New Wave and Goth in the early eighties.

Despite the stilted view of the Pistols, the book is still an amazing piece of work. Trying to take a fairer view of the clash between Lydon and McLaren, and at last giving a fair nod to the talent of Paul Cook and Steve Jones, it seeks more to report that facts instead of the myths. It also goes a bit beyond that final concert and into the farce of Biggs and Tudor the half-price Rotten clone.

Give it a chance. At the same time, might I suggest some additional reading to flesh out its minor weak points. "Please Kill Me" by Legs McNeil fills in a few of the American gaps. For a bit more biased, but nonetheless entertaining, peek at the Pistols give a nod to Lydon's "Rotten : No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs".

A Masterpiece.......2005-02-08

I started this book thinking I would learn a thing or two about the Sex Pistols, but ended up -- about 700 pages later -- an armchair expert on the cultural history of the 1970s. In other words, Jon Savage is one hell of a writer.

Erik is So Right!.......2004-04-10

Oh Erik Selvia - you are so right! The focus of this book is so narrow and exclusionary that one never gets the full picture of the so-called "punk movement". What movement? Please! The 60's music scene represented a social movement, but this punk thing pales in comparision. Savage tries to elevate it to the same level of significance (as far as social change is concerned). Real changes occurred in the 60's - the late 70s and 80s punk music scenes merely voiced a rude and crude complaint. Don't get me wrong - a lot of great music was generated out of the complaint, but its level of historical significance, outside of contributing to the development of new musical styles and presentation, is minimal to be sure.

Barebones introduction to JUnit.......2004-11-07

This is a short and sweet end-to-end introduction to JUnit. The text is pretty terse and there are a surprising number of a screenshots for a book so small. The book starts with an introduction to testing. It then gives a high level architectural overview of JUnit, along with it's API. There is a short digression into the history of the framework. Then it's into putting a front-end on the tests both on the command line and embedded into IDEs.

Quick disclosure - I'm a big fan of JUnit already. :) Anything that will convince java developers to use JUnit is a good thing. JUnit is as powerful as it is simple. To prove it, everything you need to know about JUnit is in this 80 page pocket guide. If you are a Java programmer, this pocket guide will easily convince you to add JUnit to your daily development processes. It covers the entire JUnit API, using JUnit with Ant, Extending JUnit, and plenty of suggestions on how to test various situations with JUnit.

This provocative book challenges long-held assumptions about the nature of historical consciousness in Germany. Susan A. Crane argues that the ever-more-elaborate preservation of the historical may actually reduce the likelihood that history can be experienced with the freshness and individuality characteristic of the early collectors and preservationists. Her book is both a study of the emergence in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Germany of a distinctively modern conception of historical consciousness, and a meditation on what was lost as historical thought became institutionalized and professionalized.

Public forms of remembering the past which are familiar today, such as historical museums and historical preservation, have surprisingly recent origins. In Germany, caring about the past took on these distinctively new forms after the Napoleonic wars. The Brothers Grimm gathered fairy tales and documented the origins of the German language. Historical preservationists collected documents and artifacts and organized the conservation of cathedrals and other historic buildings. Collectors formed historical societies and created Germany's historical museums. No single national consciousness emerged; instead, many groups used similar means to make different claims about what it meant to have a German past.

Although individuals were responsible for stimulating new interest in the past, they chose to band together in voluntary associations to promote collective awareness of German history. In doing so, however, they clashed with academic and political interests and lost control over the very artifacts, collections, and buildings they had saved from ruin. Examining the letters and publications of the amateur collectors, Crane shows how historical consciousness came to be represented in collective terms--whether regional or national--and in effect robbed everyone of the capacity to experience history individually and spontaneously.

Previewing Mortality.......2006-09-15

Phillipe Aries takes on an impossible challenge, how eons of people have regarded death, what they thought both of and about it. It's an honest attempt to view the subject from as many disparate theologies and belief systems as are germane and then synthesize them. It's long, and not always as accessible as one might wish but much of this problem is due to a stilted translation. Those with a knowledge of French will note passages where idiomatic French has received a direct translation rather than a rewritten one which would make it flow more sensibly. What it is not is the morgantic cousin to "The American Way of Death" published decades ago. But some of the humor and lightness of touch that volume had could have been helpful. In some cultures, and this is noted, death is a joyous event. Current society has trivialized death (discount casket shops, drive through funerals) and the current turn to evangelism makes death a punishment for many. Aries is careful to see that all points of view are represented but adroitly avoids drawing conclusions. Death is what it is. Think about it. This book provides new insights in how to do that leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions.

I have been a nurse for over 20 years and coached a lot of dying patients and familys.
I also am a history buff and this work bring the two together.
Why are my modern christian patients so afraid of death? why am I,the semi pagen, so unafraid?
A most incredible book, overlooked....

Death in Western History.......2004-07-15

This is a comprehensive survey of one thousand years (longer, really) of western attitudes towards death. By "western" were mostly talking "French", although Aries does include digressions into German, Italian, Spanish, English and American culture. I didn't find the intense focus on France to detract from the overall majesty of this 600+ page opus. For most of the thousand years, the "attitude towards death" that Aries is describing crosses national boundaires.

Aries divides his study into four overlapping historical periods: "The Tame Death", "The Death of the Self", "The Death of the Other", and "The Invisible Death". The Tame Death roughly corresponds with the pre-Christian and early middle ages. This period was characterized by a meek acceptance of passing into a long period of sleep. Death is social, and the death ritual has a central place in the society.

"The Death of the Self" is moves more into the middle and late middle ages. Here, death is used by the mendicant orders of Christianity to convert a quasi-pagan population. Thus, there is a corresponding rise in individual's concern with their own death. Also during this period, there is a rise in materialism, which creates a duality between the love of things and the renunciation of the material world which is supposed to preceed death.

The Death of the Other and the Invisible Death are familiar to most modern folks. The Invisible Death is corresponds with the post WWII American model, and the Death of the Other largely corresponds to the romantic movement (lots of weeping, lots of drama).

Aries basic thesis delves into "the Invention of Tradition" territory, i.e. that modern attitudes towards death are just that, modern, and largely without antecedent in history. Aries also points out that pre-Christian traditions of death have persisted far longer in the west then one might suppose. His main illustration for this contention is the observations that the concept of "purgatory" was not fully accepted until well into the 17th and 18th century (purgatory being an exclusively Chrisitian concept).

Starting the hard conversation........2007-09-24

This book, with a title using a phrase from the Roman Catholic Rosary, can be an excellent resource for anyone, Catholic or Protestant, in starting the dreaded "very difficult conversation" with aging family members. This book can assist an "adult child" navigate through the tricky areas of conversation and much needed information from family member so that when the time comes, end of life wishes can be honored. I am a Protestant and have used this book with many in my church who are trying to figure out how to approach a family member about what can be a difficult and upsetting topic.
