Septoria on Cereals: A Study of Pathosystems
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851992692 |
Book Description
Foliar diseases of cereals caused by Septoria and Stagonospora are now among the most significant causes worldwide of losses in cereal production, particularly in wheat. Written by leading experts from Europe and the U.S., this volume is a comprehensive survey of Septoria pathogens, the diseases they cause, and strategies for their control. The first part covers the taxonomy and biology of the pathogens, with an emphasis on genetics and mechanisms of variation in populations. Host-pathogen interactions are then considered, including comparisons with other foliar diseases of cereal crops. The third part covers population dynamics and factors determining epidemic development, including diagnosis and gauging disease risk. The book concludes with current work on the control of these diseases by fungicides and host resistance, utilizing novel chemistry, biotechnology, and methods for integrated disease management.Customer Reviews:

The Molecular Basis of Skeletogenesis No. 232

Book Description
Brings together a cross-fertilization of ideas between human molecular genetics, develeopmental biology, tissue biology and the biochemistry of cell signalling pathways, in order to create new insights into the mechanisms of normal and abnormal skeletogenesis.Download Description
This book brings together a cross-fertilization of ideas between human molecular genetics, developmental biology, tissue biology and the biochemistry of cell signalling pathways, in order to create new insights into the mechanisms of normal and abnormal skeletogenesis. This broad perspective is essential in order to understand the aetiology of genetic diseases affecting skeletal development at all levels from genotype to phenotype, i.e. from mutation to syndrome. The book encompasses normal and abnormal skeletogenesis process by process, beginning with the signalling pathways that control early patterning events, then the molecular control of osteoblast, chondrocyte and osteoclast differentiation, joint formation and finally osteoclast activity. Each step takes into consideration the results of mouse gene cloning and knockout studies, human molecular genetics, and new mouse studies stimulated by the human information. Such an integrated approach is essential if this new understanding is to be applied for future therapeutic strategies.

This monograph provides a comprehensive description of the methodology for rock mass characterization. Emphasis is given to the principles of sampling and quantification of rock mass characteristics, especially the geometry of joints, and rock mass classification schemes. Methods of analysis of two-dimensional boundary value problems and design criteria are discussed. The concepts of safety factor and probability of failure are dealt with. Ground control procedures are discussed in reference to current practice, particularly in weak rock. This work will be of interest to civil and mining engineers.

The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God & Other Stories
Etgar Keret Manufacturer: Toby Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Etgar Keret's The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God & Other Stories stings and thrills with fierce fables of modern life. Set in landscapes ranging from "this armpit town outside Austin, Texas" to "this village in Uzbekistan that was built right smack at the mouth of Hell," these stories lay their plots' central tensions out plainly: "Dad wouldn't buy me a Bart Simpson doll," one begins. Then they take off like little roller coasters, careening through the pathos of Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son, the clowning of David Sedaris's Barrel Fever, the in-your-face violence of Quentin Tarantino, and the bewildered alienation of Franz Kafka. But readers need not know any of Keret's sources to enjoy his stories fully. The Israeli writer's aphorisms leap off the page and lodge themselves in the mind: "There are two kinds of people, those who like to sleep next to the wall, and those who like to sleep next to the people who push them off the bed." Keret's vernacular prose is fun to read, and his vision of the world is weirdly comforting. Happiness never really flourishes, but small hopes and graces abound. --Michael Joseph GrossBook Description
Israel's hippest bestselling young writer today, Etgar Keret is part court jester, part literary crown prince, part national conscience. The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God gathers his daring and provocative short stories for the first time in English.Brief, intense, painfully funny, and shockingly honest, Keret's stories are snapshots that illuminate with intelligence and wit the hidden truths of life. As with the best comic authors, hilarity and anguish are the twin pillars of his work. Keret covers a remarkable emotional and narrative terrain-from a father's first lesson to his by to a standoff between soldiers caught in the Middle East conflict to a slice of life where nothing much happens. Bus Driver includes stories from Keret's bestselling collections in Israel, Pipelines and Missing Kissinger, as well as Keret's major new novella, "Kneller's Happy Campers," a bitingly satirical yet wistful road trip set in the afterlife for suicides.Customer Reviews:

C. J. Wrigley Manufacturer: I. B. Tauris ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1860642861 Release Date: 2007-02-20 |
Book Description
A scholar gentleman in the old style; a northern non-conforming radical; an academic steeped in Oxford traditions; a late-20th century media personality; one of the most outstanding historians of his age: A.J.P. Taylor was all these things. He wrote about traditional historical subjects in a traditional manner and took narrative history to new heights and was equally at home with a critical academic, as with a vast popular, audience. C.J. Wrigley's new biographical study includes fascinating and hitherto unknown details of Taylor's privileged and cosseted childhood, the effect of his close but combative and stimulating family, the dissenting and nonconformist tradition, and his time as a teacher, broadcaster journalist and historian.
