        Book Description

Foliar diseases of cereals caused by Septoria and Stagonospora are now among the most significant causes worldwide of losses in cereal production, particularly in wheat. Written by leading experts from Europe and the U.S., this volume is a comprehensive survey of Septoria pathogens, the diseases they cause, and strategies for their control. The first part covers the taxonomy and biology of the pathogens, with an emphasis on genetics and mechanisms of variation in populations. Host-pathogen interactions are then considered, including comparisons with other foliar diseases of cereal crops. The third part covers population dynamics and factors determining epidemic development, including diagnosis and gauging disease risk. The book concludes with current work on the control of these diseases by fungicides and host resistance, utilizing novel chemistry, biotechnology, and methods for integrated disease management.

          Download Description

This book brings together a cross-fertilization of ideas between human molecular genetics, developmental biology, tissue biology and the biochemistry of cell signalling pathways, in order to create new insights into the mechanisms of normal and abnormal skeletogenesis. This broad perspective is essential in order to understand the aetiology of genetic diseases affecting skeletal development at all levels from genotype to phenotype, i.e. from mutation to syndrome. The book encompasses normal and abnormal skeletogenesis process by process, beginning with the signalling pathways that control early patterning events, then the molecular control of osteoblast, chondrocyte and osteoclast differentiation, joint formation and finally osteoclast activity. Each step takes into consideration the results of mouse gene cloning and knockout studies, human molecular genetics, and new mouse studies stimulated by the human information. Such an integrated approach is essential if this new understanding is to be applied for future therapeutic strategies.

              Book Description

A user's manual for our everyday world!

"Whether a curious layperson, a trained physicist, or a beginning physics student, most everyone will find this book an interesting and enlightening read and will go away comforted in that the world is not so strange and inexplicable after all."
--From the Foreword by Carl Wieman, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2001, and CASE/Carnegie US University Professor of the Year 2004

If you didn't know better, you might think the world was filled with magic--from the household appliances that make our lives easier to the CDs and DVDs that fill our world with sounds and images. Even a simple light bulb can seem mysterious when you stop to think about it.

Now in How Everything Works, Louis Bloomfield explains the physics behind the ordinary objects and natural phenomena all around us, and unravels the mysteries of how things work. Inside, you'll find easy-to-understand answers to scores of fascinating questions, including:
              * How do microwave ovens cook food, and why does metal sometimes cause sparks in a microwave?
              * How does an iPod use numbers to represent music?
              * How do CDs and DVDs use light to convey information, and why are they so colorful?
              * How can a CT or MRI image show a cross-sectional view of a person without actually entering the body?
              * Why do golf balls have dimples?
              * How does a pitcher make a curveball curve and knuckleball jitter about in an erratic manner?
              * Why is the sun red at sunrise and sunset?
              * How does a fluorescent lamp produce visible light?

You don't need a science or engineering background to understand How Everything Works, all you need is an active curiosity about the extraordinary world all around you.

              1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-06-13

I imagined that this would be a richly illustrated book showing how Physics plays a role in some of the everyday things I encounter. Instead, it seemed to me to read like another monochrome textbook by some professor at an Ivory League college. I was frankly disappointed and certainly not at all entertained. Fortunely I've arleady completed a few graduate degrees.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service. I will be back for more........2007-06-09

5 out of 5 stars Saved from a costly mistake........2007-01-13

Some books are crammed full of info, but don't teach the subject matter very well. This book fortunatly does a fine teaching job.
I was concerned about whether to buy this book, thinking it might not be a smart way to spend my money. But,I found some info in it that prevented me from wasting my time on a tech project I was working on. If I hadn't gone ahead and spent the money on this book, I might have spent some serious money on my tech project...only to discover it was flawed in its design.
Although I won't spend a fortune on future book purchases, I will be more inclined to buy books like this one that help increase my basic knowledge of how things work.

5 out of 5 stars Best though-provoker since Brief History of Time.......2006-05-26

I've read a number of science books over the years, some under duress, and others for the pleasurable bending of the brain that it provokes. This book ranks right alongside Hawkings' Brief History of time in terms of perspective-altering clout. Bloomfield's style is clear and concise, never lost me in the mumbo-jumbo, and is radiating with his own voice, a voice that is clearly ecstatic over the physics of microwaving metals, the curveball, and every other type of everyday physics you can imagine. He even made P-N junctions hilarious, if you dont know what that is, just look for the section about theatre patrons being hurled around by gorillas...

For days after reading this book I found myself wondering about the physics of things going on around me, and often able to come up with some realistic, (at least to my mind!) explanations for them based on the principles in How Eevrything Works.

If I'm sounding a bit like a big cheerleader for this book, that's good, I would encourage anyone to pick it up and read it through, if for no other reason than a few trippy days afterwards, staring at elevators and water pipes in awe.

Etgar Keret's The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God & Other Stories stings and thrills with fierce fables of modern life. Set in landscapes ranging from "this armpit town outside Austin, Texas" to "this village in Uzbekistan that was built right smack at the mouth of Hell," these stories lay their plots' central tensions out plainly: "Dad wouldn't buy me a Bart Simpson doll," one begins. Then they take off like little roller coasters, careening through the pathos of Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son, the clowning of David Sedaris's Barrel Fever, the in-your-face violence of Quentin Tarantino, and the bewildered alienation of Franz Kafka. But readers need not know any of Keret's sources to enjoy his stories fully. The Israeli writer's aphorisms leap off the page and lodge themselves in the mind: "There are two kinds of people, those who like to sleep next to the wall, and those who like to sleep next to the people who push them off the bed." Keret's vernacular prose is fun to read, and his vision of the world is weirdly comforting. Happiness never really flourishes, but small hopes and graces abound. --Michael Joseph Gross

                Book Description

Israel's hippest bestselling young writer today, Etgar Keret is part court jester, part literary crown prince, part national conscience. The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God gathers his daring and provocative short stories for the first time in English.Brief, intense, painfully funny, and shockingly honest, Keret's stories are snapshots that illuminate with intelligence and wit the hidden truths of life. As with the best comic authors, hilarity and anguish are the twin pillars of his work. Keret covers a remarkable emotional and narrative terrain-from a father's first lesson to his by to a standoff between soldiers caught in the Middle East conflict to a slice of life where nothing much happens. Bus Driver includes stories from Keret's bestselling collections in Israel, Pipelines and Missing Kissinger, as well as Keret's major new novella, "Kneller's Happy Campers," a bitingly satirical yet wistful road trip set in the afterlife for suicides.

5 out of 5 stars Funny little stories.......2007-01-24

Etgar Keret's story "The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God" illustrates John Gall's dictum, "Any problem complicated enough to require cost-benefit analysis is usually too ambiguous to benefit from cost-benefit analysis." It should be required reading for all economists trying to quantify risk and cost.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Collection of Short Stories.......2006-09-06

Keret shows the ability to write well-constucted stories in several voices. The endings are often surprising, which is one test of a good short story. Though the plots are often macabre, there is an innocent matter-of-fact attitude running throughout. You will enjoy this as long as you forget expectations about what and how an Israeli author "should" write.

                4 out of 5 stars cool.......2005-08-29

interesting look into the Israeli perspective. I first heard the last story, a novella called Kneller's Happy Campers, and Pipes, when an Israeli friend translated it from the comic book in Hebrew. He couldn't stop chuckling every other line, so I bought the book... I think something has been lost in the translation, it's not so hilarious, but it's a good read. I really liked Pipes, the Arab and Israeli fight, and the story about the plagues in Egypt..

1 out of 5 stars Anyone Can Get Published.......2005-08-01

I thought that this collection was not only short on each story but written like a twelve year old as well. I repeatedly flipped to the back cover where it refered to the author as "hip" and then again to the inside flap to his picture where it read that he was born in 1967 because I continually came across passages, lines, expressions that made me feel disgusted at the fact that such crap could be accepted as public-worthy.

The author is grammatically inept and weaves stories as a five year old would tell one - to think it up as they go along. Terrible stuff. I cannot believe that this guy gives lectures at a university in Tel Aviv or anywhere else. I graded it a D+.

                5 out of 5 stars Keretian.......2005-07-06

A writer this original deserves an adjective of his own, for Keret's style is indeed unique. A true sign of literary genius, for me, is unpredictability. Every sentence in Keret's writing comes as a surprise -- and yet, at the same time, could not have been anything else. Keret deserves the attention he is finally receiving outside Israel.

                      Book Description

A scholar gentleman in the old style; a northern non-conforming radical; an academic steeped in Oxford traditions; a late-20th century media personality; one of the most outstanding historians of his age: A.J.P. Taylor was all these things. He wrote about traditional historical subjects in a traditional manner and took narrative history to new heights and was equally at home with a critical academic, as with a vast popular, audience. C.J. Wrigley's new biographical study includes fascinating and hitherto unknown details of Taylor's privileged and cosseted childhood, the effect of his close but combative and stimulating family, the dissenting and nonconformist tradition, and his time as a teacher, broadcaster journalist and historian.

                          Book Description

Suitable for almost every course, How We Learn and Why We Don't is a relatively short, 60-page book designed to help students understand how they think, how they learn, and even perhaps why they don't think as clearly as they could or learn as much as they can. Beginning with a self-assessment, students are offered proven strategies to help them achieve better grades and to maximize and match learning profiles with their academic and career paths.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not much new.......2002-11-24

If you have done learning style inventories or Myers-Briggs style questionnaires, this will offer a little new material, but not enough to really make it worthwhile. There are some additional applications with regard to learning and studying, but they seem almost too obvious. They are on the order of: if you like things ordered and structured, then try to order and structure a more amorphous assignment, so it will be easier for you. Or: if this is something you feel would help you, then try it.

It is a bit too wishy-washy for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars New chapter in the 3rd edition on ADD.......2002-10-23

The third edition has added material in most chapters, but especially important- there's an appendix with new information on the connection between one type of learner and a very common mis-diagnosis of ADD. This is MUST reading for students diagnosed with ADD and their parents and teachers.

5 out of 5 stars It reveals the answer to all students' study problems!.......2000-12-14

The inventory is exactly right and could not be more accurate. It is helpful not only to me as a student, but also to me as a future educator. It helps to understand how you learn along with others around you! It is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every student, parent and teacher!.......2000-10-26

The Cognitive Profile Model uses well known and proven Jungian psychological type theory to identify individual differences in how people learn, think, process information and make decisions. It is the only model for "learning styles" that has shown a statistically significant improvement in grades in a large, statistically rigorous study (over 2000 students.) Used all over the US and in Canada, it works, it improves grades and confidence! The book includes a brief description of the abbreviated Jungian model, the Cognitive Profile Inventory, (20 minutes, self scoring) and study strategies by individual profile, and more! It is appropriate for middle school through college and adult learners.

                          5 out of 5 stars Dr. Krause's book.......2000-10-26

I'm in one of Dr. Krause's classes and we used this book in class. It's a unique way of looking at how people learn and is very easy to understand. We went over some aspects of her researh in class and they were interesting. It would be a neat study to try the test in the book on some children and compare their results to their "success" in schools.
