    Book Description

In the fast-paced, "I-need-it-done-by-yesterday" world of microwave engineering, it's more important than ever to get your circuit designs up-and-running on time and to specifications. Authored by a well-known expert in the industry, this unique new book helps you do just that by presenting no-nonsense, proven-under-fire microwave circuit design "recipes" that you can follow for fast design results -- without having to wade through pages of theoretical or academic rhetoric.

The RF and Microwave Circuit Design Cookbook is written solely for today's practicing engineer. Using a lively, easy-to-read style, it reveals practical, tested methods for designing and implementing a wide range of nonlinear RF and microwave circuits, including all types of mixers, frequency multipliers, and more. A special feature is a complete treatment of FET resistive mixers, which offer the lowest intermodulation distortion of all types of mixers. You also get hard-to-find information on creating both square law and envelope diode detectors.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars covers its topics well, but leaves out some essentials.......1999-09-17

This book covers some topics in rf and microwave circuit design very well. Amplifiers and oscillators, for example, are not covered. Be sure to check the table of contents to see that it meets your needs. The areas covered are presented so that you can quickly extract design techniques without wading through less relavent information. The book frequenly suggests simulation to tune designs. This is a good idea and low cost simulation tools (ARRL radio designer) are available. The book will give you the most if you have a simulation tool available as you read. Every section has a bit of cautionary advice for the reader. Most of the advice is very much worth taking, but ocasionally it is wrong. (Example: balanced varactor multipliers are harder to design than single ended multipliers - which are too hard to be practical. The latter has some truth, but balanced varactor designs can be very simple.)

            Book Description

This intellectually bold but accessible book seeks to go beyond limitations of the reigning neoclassical and institutional paradigms in explaining the organization of economic activity. It does this by construing "non-economic" factors such as institutions, cultures, and social practices as conventions, which coordinate economic actors by defining specific "frameworks of economic action." In these conventional frameworks, the standard distinction between economic and non-economic no longer exists. The authors explore in detail four basic frameworks--or "possible worlds of production"--which underpin the mobilization of economic resources, the organization of production systems and factor markets, patterns of economic decision making, and forms of profitability. The case studies examine how these possible worlds act to support innovative production complexes in a variety of sectors in several countries.

Storper and Salais show that economic actors coordinate actions with one another and interpret what others are doing in ways that are constructed by convention. The principal challenge to economic policy today, they argue, is to reconcile internally coherent conventions with the external tests of product and financial markets, which tend increasingly to escape jurisdictional borders. There is no single model of growth and efficiency that brings these two sides together around the world today, even in narrowly defined product markets. If policies are to deal effectively with an increasingly unified global system of flows of commodities, money, and people, they must be aware of the diverse, economically viable action frameworks found in different industries, regions, and nations.

                        Book Description

Why are public identities so predictably, and often so radically, different from identities that flourish in realms of collective intimacy? Why does belonging to a group, knowing about it, or displaying its qualities to others require that certain aspects of identification be denied—not because they are false or stereotypical, but because they are thought to be accurate and indispensable signs of membership?

In Off Stage/On Display, ten scholars with diverse geographical, theoretical, and topical interests take a close, critical look at the vexed relationship between public identities and the intimate spheres in which they are made. They ask how scholars and activists can engage more creatively with problems encountered on this awkward terrain, which is now global both in location and political significance. Their answers, careful and suggestive, point to more effective strategies for representing aspects of identification that cannot be easily shown or, in an age of mass mediation, easily concealed.

Dear Donatella Bergamino & Marina Raffo,

I have a problem about a problem on Test 1. Question 34 is a letter pattern question. In the answer key, it says the answer is the letter D, but the explanation does not match with the problem. I worked with the pattern in the book, and came up with the answer B. If the explanation matched with the question, the answer would be F. I don't understand what happened. Besides that, it is a good book. I am glad you wrote it.

(P.S) On the last page, italicized is spelled wrong. You spelled it "italized".

This is perhaps the best book in existence on Adobe InDesign CS for a person interested PRIMARILY in good page design. Bergsland is one of the most knowledgeable typographers and page layout professionals out there. The reader looking for PhotoShop glitz should look elsewhere. This book is for genuine page layout professionals. I have purchased probably every known book about InDesign CS/CS2 and this one is the best! The next best is Real World InDesign CS. Between these two, nothing else is needed. By the way, I am a professional typographer and own my own printing company so I know a little bit about this. Photoshop expertise is available on every street corner - but finding someone who knows professional page layout is rare. Get the book!

I don't think so. And for that reason, I wouldn't think of buying the book. There are plenty of other books available to learn the same thing, whose writers haven't tried to subvert the integrity of a user-review system.

I object to Bergland's review of his own book (and the five stars) because these reviews are for us, users and potential users. We expect reports of real experience with the books. We want to know how others not associated with the product regard it. That's reasonable. If Bergland can't honor that, I'm unwilling to buy his book. Period.

5 out of 5 stars First Tech Book I've Ever Liked.......2004-12-12

This book has actually helped me, and I can read it without getting exasperated. The author is smart, and presents good information in a very well formatted text. He clearly knows what he is doing. I am trying to understand font and prepress issues, which everyone knows are a pain.
The book is a reasonable size. I've had the big books, the specialized books, the dummy books, the visual books, and I don't like them. I like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Better than you might think.......2004-05-03

This title is one of the better "How to Do Everything..." titles. Most of the others that I've seen aren't much better than the software manual, except for being in color; that is, they just tell you obvious things, like listing all the tools. This book has shown me some things I didn't already know about InDesign (I've been using it for a while, but never had any real training), particularly things that will make me more efficient. Books on InDesign aren't readily available, compared to Illustrator and Photoshop; any book that isn't awful stands out immediately. I don't think this one is as bad as the other reviewers make it out to be. (By comparison, the "Real World" book on InDesign was loaded with mistakes -- even naming the wrong program in some places -- even in its 2nd edition!)

P.S. Most times, when authors/publishers review their own books, they get no stars, which (unfortunately) Amazon averages in with the other reviews, dragging down perfectly good books. It might be useful for Amazon to fix this so that authors/publishers can self-review without hurting their scores, and without starting such a controversy -- at least the guy identified himself -- see all the articles now about "stealth" reviewers puffing or destroying books as part of an agenda. Come on guys, give the author a break!

                        1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money........2004-04-13

Unethical review practices aside, this book isn't that great. I had a look at Borders and I was not impressed by either the content nor its organization. Of all the InDesign CS books I've seen (or seen described so far), Scott Kelby's interests me the most... essentially because he does such good work on his Photoshop books that I know a certain level of quality will be achieved there.

                            Book Description

For centuries, the Caddos occupied the southern prairies and woodlands across portions of Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Organized into powerful chiefdoms during the Mississippian period, Caddo society was highly ceremonial, revolving around priest-chiefs, trade in exotic items, and the periodic construction of mounds. Their distinctive heritage helped the Caddos to adapt after the European invasion and to remain the dominant political and economic power in the region. New ideas, peoples, and commodities were incorporated into their cultural framework. The Caddos persisted and for a time even thrived, despite continual raids by the Osages and Choctaws, decimation by diseases, and escalating pressures from the French and Spanish.

The Caddo Chiefdoms offers the most complete accounting available of early Caddo culture and history. Weaving together French and Spanish archival sources, Caddo oral history, and archaeological evidence, David La Vere presents a fascinating look at the political, social, economic, and religious forces that molded Caddo culture over time. Special attention is given to the relationship between kinship and trade and to the political impulses driving the successive rise and decline of Caddo chiefdoms.

Distinguished by thorough scholarship and an interpretive vision that is both theoretically astute and culturally sensitive, this study enhances our understanding of a remarkable southeastern Native people.
