A fantastic read, full of deep insights and witty anecdotes, Liebenberg, Strategic Analyst with Rand Merchant Bank in South Africa takes the reader through a delightful journey into the world of Electronic Financial Markets of the Future. (EFMotF)

Clearly a writing dynamo in her own right, Liebenberg presents a strategic overview of the impact and implications of technology in these markets.

Her model of primary inter-related technological causes includes some minor flaws, particularly in regards to capitalistic criteria of non-linearity, however, as a whole her writing successfully provides a template for the evaluation of financial market cross-hyper-population. A must read for those interested in e-business financial markets!

If a house divided against itself cannot stand, does it help to declare it a condominium? This book examines why the common Yugoslav and Bosnian houses came to be divided, and how international diplomatic activities to resolve the conflicts have been misconceived.

Through an analysis that combines cultural examination and constitutional study, Robert Hayden argues that almost everything that has happened in the former Yugoslavia since 1989 is congruent with the logic of the politicians who won election in the free and fair elections of 1990 and with the constitutional structures that these politicians have created. Once the idea of a common state for all of the Yugoslav peoples lost electorally, the conflicts that followed were so logical as to be inescapable.

Throughout, the analysis relies almost exclusively on materials from the former Yugoslavia itself and on what participants said to each other in their own languages rather than in English to the world community. Drawing on the work of Max Weber and Tzvetan Todorov, this book also discusses the ethical and moral dangers of ignoring the probable consequences of actions that might be desirable in the abstract. A major conclusion is that the actions of the international community were never likely to achieve their stated goals, because they were based on premises unrelated to those driving the Yugoslav peoples themselves.

This book addresses issues of interest in anthropology, political science, international relations, law, ethics, East European studies, and policy making.

Good analysis of constitutional nationalism.......2001-06-06

"Blueprints" is an extensive analysis of a largely overlooked and insufficiently studied aspect of Yugoslavia's break-up: the actual changes made to the legal order of the separate republics and the federation as a whole, and their consequences. One of the most important initial points made by Hayden is that the Yugoslav Constitution of 1974, which was effective until the country's demise, established a very complicated, decentralized and hard-to-govern federation. The ambiguities contained in many of this constitution's provisions facilitated later moves by various federal units (the republics) to justify as constitutonal their moves for greater sovereignty at the federation's expense. Hayden's consideration of the various constitutional structures established in the various republics after Yugoslavia's break-up forms the heart of this book. He argues that countries like Slovenia, Croatia, etc. can be characterized as exhibiting `constitutional nationalism,' since the predominance in the state of one ethnic nation is embedded in the very constitutional and legal order. Also interesting is his sharp critique of the constitutional fiction in place in Bosnia-Herzegovina and its `entities.' Perhaps the book's main weakness is that it fails to sufficiently emphasize that the constitutional disputes occurring in Yugoslavia just before the country's break-up were not occurring in a political vacuum; Hayden's argument seems to be that the Slovenes bear most of the initial responsibility for Yugoslavia's collapse because of the amendments to their republic constitution amounted to a unilateral derogation of the federal constitution. This fails to take into account Serbia's less than constitutional abrogation of autonomy in its provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo, and even the federal republic of Montenegro. In the book's preface and introduction, Hayden attempts - rather unconvincingly - to explain away his lack of focus on Serbia, but this remains the primary weakness in his overall argument. Nevertheless, this is still a very important contribution to understanding Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav political and legal problems.

Robert Hayden is uniquely qualified to examine the Yugoslav mess - as a legal scholar who is deeply familiar with the families, clans, tribes and nations who made up the first and second Yugoslavias and as an anthropologist who can find his way through the constitutional jungles those peoples created. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how the Bosnian civil war developed out of competing competing constitutional interpretations.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RECORDED AUDIO LECTURES ON TAPE. IT IS A REVIEW OF AUDIO VOLUME FIFTEEN - NOT ANY OTHER VOLUME AND NOT THE "FEYNMAN LECTURES ON PHYSICS" BOOK DESPITE AMAZON'S PLACEMENT OF THIS REVIEW ON THE PRINTED BOOK WEB PAGE. (the system also seems to miss-associate these reviews with the incorrect audio volumes.)
This volume is part two of "Feynman on Electricity & Magnetism" - Volume 14 is part one.

OK, that warning aside, the subject is Electricity & Magnetism. The man is Feynman. Here's what you get:
Six hours of Feynman lecturing (in his characteristic idiosyncratic demeanor) to students at the California Institute of Technology during the early years of the 1960's. Yes folks, that's right: Six 1 hour lectures on six audio tapes covering the chapters 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, & 14 from which volume two of the printed lectures was transcribed. The lectures also cover some serious mathematics (Differential & Vector Calculus). This is where owning a copy of the printed lectures is necessary for following his use of the massive University lecture hall chalkboards. Of course Professor Feynman makes use of the chalkboard which you won't have the advantage of seeing but you could keep a copy of the printed lectures on hand (separate purchase) to get whatever visuals you need from the transcribed illustrated diagrams which were published (I do this and it's handy). The only audio editing is from the publisher announcing the date, lecture title, and where each chapter subsection begins. It is interesting to hear the background noise of the students as they file in and out of the lecture hall and towards the end of each lecture. You also hear bells in the hallway signaling the end of the class or possibly the lunch break. The students enthusiastically demonstrate their appreciation of Professor Feynman's efforts by applauding him at the end of each lecture. Mostly I just listen to these tapes (I have a collection of over 80 taped lectures) on my one hour a day commute each day, over and over again. It's like I'm always in school with the great genius of Feynman every day!

British Burn Notice but better.......2007-09-17

Enjoy the twists and turns deftly if sometimes clumsily negotiated by Thomas Lang, the main character in actor Hugh Laurie's first novel, The Gun Seller.

"Imagine that you have to break someone's arm" begins the story and our introduction to its center - Thomas Lang. What follows is a brief discussion on the ways and reasons for breaking such an arm, and, less than a page later, the discovery that it's Lang's arm we've been discussing. The remainder of the book is full of these ponderings and explanations on the styles of combat, types of weapon, and general behind-the-scenes military info I've only experienced elsewhere when watching USA's Burn Notice and its equally captivating ex-spy Michael Westin.

In his nonchalant style, Lang tells us he's is an ex-British Army soldier who now spends his time doing a lot of nothing and taking the occasional freelance opportunity to use his military skills, which, of course, is precisely why he's approached by someone named McCluskey to kill an American businessman by the name of Alexander Woolf.

Lang, however, is one of the good guys, and he turns down the offer only to find himself later accused of it. While trying to prove his innocence and find out the truth, Lang gets close to Woolf's daughter, Sarah, and finds himself immersed in a mystery that goes far beyond a mere assassin-for-hire situation.

Laurie, currently starring on FOX's House, has crafted what one might expect from the former star of A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and Blackadder, or just someone from the land of James Bond - a very funny, very British, very wry tale of derring-do replete with a damsel in distress, good guys doing bad things, bad guys thinking they're doing good things, government conspiracies, terrorist plots, and a review of Swiss chocolate versus the more popular Cadbury brand (Cadbury wins).

I found Laurie's style via Lang's narrative highly readable. As an American some terminology was lost on me, but years of watching British TV kept that to a minimum. Laurie sometimes allows Lang to venture into off-subject ramblings at crucial moments (like the aforementioned Cadbury debate), but he does it so well that you never lose the story. I always knew exactly what was going on - or as much as I was supposed to at that moment - and absolutely reveled in the book's humor. Laurie has successfully written a rarity - the comic spy novel.

This is an excellent book. If you are interested in spies or anything of like or are just curious about Hugh Laurie as an author (he's great!), then buy this book!

I loved it! Like Terry Pratchett meets Monty Python, only set in our everyday world. If you like political mysteries you'll probably appreciate it, and if you like witty and funny books I know you'll appreciate it. Hugh Laurie is a great comedian, in all his endeavors both theatrical and literary.

Every paragraph of this novel is funny. It's a great, witty satire of the spy genre. I loved it.

Hugh Laurie displays a wonderful sense of humour in this mystery novel. It's a quick, entertaining read. Wish it were in print in the US. Don't hesitate to buy a used copy from the UK - mine showed up in just a few days.
