Motors and Control Circuits.......2006-11-06
Exellent study guide for beginner and journeyman Accompanying CD is articulate and the best I have seen. The author has done a fine job, both technically and artistically.
Not the Real Deal..........2002-09-13
For those who want to know the fundamentals of Automated Industrial Systems under the heading of Electrical Motor Control... This text of ISBN 0-8273-8640-0, I can not recommend. There maybe better text that I am not aware of, But ISBN 0-8269-1663-5 from 1987 is a text you can grow with. I'll be upgrading to ISBN 0-8269-1675-9 by Gary Rockis & Glen Mazur. Sincerely, Industrial Maintenance Electrician of 12+ years. I will post an additional review once I have viewed the upgraded edition. (I've wondered about these reviews... Are they posted by a PR / sales people???) Good Luck & Be Safe.
Comprehensive Detailed Motor Control Text.......2001-12-19
Very competently written text that covers all areas of traditional motor control. The author demonstrates his field knowledge by including typical characteristics of device failure and indications where inspection and possible maintenance would be prudent. Circuits and schematics are shown in standard ladder logic convention and in some instances even shows analogy to digital logic for those who are formerly trained electronics technicians.
My one criticism is the sequencing of some of the chapters. The author seems to have weaved in and out of some areas where I expected more complete coverage only to find the topics further toward the back of the text. This detracts from an otherwise well written and authoritative text for the 1st time and intermediate level learner.
Great Information.......2001-10-25
This book is loaded with informative and valuable essential
information that anyone in the field would find enteresting, and would be of extreme benefit to those entering the field.
I found each chapter well written, easy to understand, and not cluttered with useless information.
The Unit on "Synchronous Automatic Motor Starter" was of particular interest to me as I have operated these machines before.
The section on "Developing Control Circuits" was also exciting for me as I have worked on storm drain pumping stations, and sewage lift stations which utilized the two pump alternating scheme shown in Figs. 2 thru 6.
The solid state theory and circuits was excellent.
This book makes for great reading, and I recommend it for all hands.
Execellent book. Few technical books hit the mark like this.......1999-06-12
Well written electronic/electrical books are like finding gold nuggets. I have an electrical background and used this book as a refresher to study for a professional test. I found it was well written, accurate and to the point. The authors did not get bogged down in endless calculations, but did present what was necessary. The authors covered each subject completely with well selected words, illustrations, and pictures that conveyed the idea in a simple to understand format. I would recommend this book to anyone, beginner, or craftsman seeking review of subjects they have not worked with for some time. I liked the short unit concept of covering each subject. I will look to these authors first for other electrical titles in the future.

Book Description
This book discusses the extent to which work was transformed in Britain between 1880-1950. Chapters explore: the historiography and theorizing of work; the changing labor force; the debates on deskilling, and work intensification; employers and the management of labor, work conditions, and occupational health, the role of the state in the workplace; women, gender relations, and inequalities at work; trade unions, work and politics. The book emphasizes the diversity of work experience, the uneven pace of change and the weaknesses in Marxist theories of the changing nature of work. Workers emerge as both victims and active players, capable of regulating work conditions, relationships, and the labor process, with the trade unions increasingly playing a vital, protective role.

Book Description
What they said when they were not singing.
Here are hundreds of quotes that highlight the wit, wisdom and lunacy of the opera world. Luminaries Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Caruso, Ruffo, Chaliapin, Melba, Sills, Callas, Toscanini, Beecham and other more recent personalities have had lots to say about opera, themselves and each other.
There are venomous quotes from critics and emotional outbursts by performers and listeners. One hapless society matron tried complimenting soprano Eileen Farrell at a reception in her honor with "My dear, you reminded me so much of Kate Smith." The comparison so rattled the diva Farrell that she blurted out, "Well, kiss my ass!" and stormed out.
Austrian conductor Franz Schalk is noted for the most emblematic words about opera life: "Every theatre is an insane asylum, but an opera theatre is the ward for the incurables."
This book will be a delight for aficionados of opera.

Very entertaining read.......2007-08-20
This is one of those books you will finish in about an hour and you will NOT be able to put it down! There are quotes from the greats of opera, and many of them are very entertaining. There are also some very inspirational quotes from different performers, such as Pavarotti and Caruso. I highly recommend this book solely for its entertainment value. It is a quick read, and I can't imagine anyone regretting it!
Delightful Moments from the Wonderful, Wacky World of Opera!.......2003-11-13
The sub-title of "Quotable Opera" ("Aria Ready for a Laugh?")provides a strong hint of what to expect in this delightful collection by Stephen & Nancy Tanner. And lest you think it's all just "fluff," you'll be gratified to find a great number of more serious quotes from the cognoscenti of an art that's been called by so many different names over the years. Among the definitions of opera included here are:
"the most dangerous of all art forms"
"the selection of famous voices for fashionable ears"
"the most rococo and degraded of all art forms"
"an exotick, irrational entertainment" (Dr. Samuel Johnson)
and, by H.L. Mencken:
"The opera is to music what a bawdy house is to a cathedral."
The chapters of "Quotable Opera" are arranged according to subject, and, like the entire book, with the authors' unique sense of ironic wit and just plain fun. The chapter dealing with quotes by and about Maria Callas, for instance, has the title, "Is Diva Just Avid Spelled Backward?"
As you might imagine, some of the funniest quotations may be found in the chapter dealing with critics --including some of the snide remarks they have made about artists, along with what has been said, even more snidely, about them. One acerbic gentleman, for instance, referred to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as "a viable alternative to valium." But then someone defined a critic as "a virgin who wants to teach Don Juan how to make love."
And speaking of making love, the chapter on "Sex and Opera" is full of amusing remarks from famous singers commenting on the effects of too much (or too little!) sex on their voices.
The abundance of funny stuff in the book -- and that includes the brilliant illustrations by Umberto Taccola -- is interspersed with generous portions of more serious remarks from famous men and women -- singers, musicians, writers, etc. (Even Mel Brooks is quoted at one point!) -- all giving their knowledgeable opinions about this great art form.
Composers are generously represented in these pages, often to great effect. Hector Berlioz, for instance, referred to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde as "a sort of chromatic moan." And
for anyone who has thrilled to a performance of Giacomo Puccini's music, it is illuminating to read what he requested of his librettist for Turandot, his final opera: "Create for me something that will make the world weep."
When you read "Quotable Opera," you may not find yourself weeping, but you will certainly laugh a lot, and along the way you might even learn something!

Customer Reviews:
There Are Much Better Books On The Subject.......2006-07-09
Hendrik Olaerts is 100% correct in his review (19 May 2006), when he describes this book as "outdated." But I feel more needs to be said, and my opinion of this book differs greatly from most of the earlier reviewers. What I fear is that someone might be looking for a good technical book on legacy PCs. Gilster's book would NOT be a good choice!
I've spent most of the last eleven years traveling in third world countries, after leaving a long-term job running and maintaining a PC lab at a community college. I fear that someone working in these more remote places might want to buy this book as a technical introduction to legacy PCs, because such PCs are common in much of the world outside the U.S. and a few other industrialized countries. One can still find PC ATs and even XTs.
Having read the whole book, I feel the author has made a number of technical errors, used misleading and confused explanations for many technical subjects, glossed over numerous important nitty-gritty configuration topics, and dwelt much too often on unnecessarily detailed treatment of relatively trivial matters. For anyone new to PC technology (i.e., anyone without enough technical knowledge to be able to recognize the mistakes and misconceptions), this book would be a very poor choice.
For only about $6 more, you can buy the latest edition (currently 17th) of Scott Mueller's excellent book: Upgrading & Repairing PCs, which I highly recommend. For those interested in legacy systems, Mueller's book has always included a CD with earlier editions in PDF format. You can go as far back in PC history as you like.
Let the uninitiated be forewarned. There's probably a good reason why Wiley Publishing, Inc., has never issued a second edition of this book. I'm used to expecting better than this from Wiley.
out dated.......2006-05-20
Well, this is a book for and from the previous millennium ; talks about A:/fdisk ; disks smaller then 512 Mbyte. Pages all about IDE-hard disk, their connectors with photographs and all; in short : out of time.
More than a tech manual is this book........2004-02-24
Being involved with computers for over 15 years now, I have learned that there is always something new to learn. Everyday this industry changes and keeping up it can and is a full time job. The book is written by someone with over 35 year experience and the material covered is nothing short of great.
When I started reading this book I thought is was another text for the A+ Exam, and while you could use it as a study tool, the book is more in line for the technician. What the book covers is hardware mostly, from the motherboard through printers and everything in between.
There is coverage of C3 and Itanium processors, binary conversions, AT Commands, video and monitors and so much more. Ron Glister has given you a real reference manual and a great addition to my technical library.
The text is technically and material wise up to date with the latest information. Also there is a cd included with a host of utilities, most of which a trialware or shareware. About everyone should find a few of them useful in some way and overall if you are serious about fixing and repairing than you have a first rate source to work with.
Excellent Book.......2003-04-10
Agreeing with the previous review 100%. This is an excellent book, and I can lift it over my head, so it won't be such a pain in the butt to drag around with me. At around 800 pages, it's still a hefty reference, but a little more manageable than some of the bigger books out there. The language is plain. The organization is sensible, and I appreciate the many genericized diagrams in addition to photos. Photos are nice, but the diagrams make it easier for me to figure out what I'm looking at from machine to machine. I wish more hardware books were put together like this one.
Gilster is the Greatest!.......2003-03-31
This is the second book by Ron Gilster I have used to learn more about computers. I thought at first I may have made a mistake with this book in that it may be too advanced for me, but that was not the case, for the most part. My husband, who works in computing, says that this book covers all of the basic problems a repair technician would need help with, which is what worried me, since I am not a technician by any stretch of the imagination. I am an office manager stuck with the job of supporting our computer network. The background and explanation of how things work and why they can go awry is very helpful to me in understanding what a problem may be, how to explain it to the serviceperson, and in knowing if the right things are being fixed.
Thanks, Mr. Gilster. I am a devoted fan!

Book Description
A Modern History of Oman details the British influence in Oman from early contacts with the Sultan of Muscat in 1800. The discovery of oil in the region in 1932, following earlier Middle East discoveries, increased the key strategic importance of Oman and set the pattern for the 20th century. The "modernizing" Sultan Qabus, supported by the British, seized power by a coup in 1970, confirmed Oman's position as a key state in the Persian Gulf region. This illuminating work is based on state documents from Europe, US, Japan and the Arab world covering Oman and Western geopolitical policy.

Science Experiments Ages 9 - 12.......2005-01-16
Science experiments to be done at home. Over 300 are provided in a small book. The book would be better conceived and better presented if there were fewer experiments with more detail and more selectivity on each one. The target ages are 9 - 12 with parental supervision.
Some of the science experiments included in the book are:
1. A nail magnet - need insulated copper wire, a large nail, paper clips and a 6 volt dry cell.
2. plant force - need pots, dirt, lima bean seeds and 3 different weights up to the weight of a half dollar.
3. Ink eradicator - need lemon juice and household laundry bleach.
