Book Description
This sordid covert odyssey offers an inside look at how a pro works, throwing open a Pandora's box of bugs, mics, phone taps and more. The most comprehensive book ever on audio surveillance, it contains everything you ever wanted to know about the underground business of bugging. For academic study only.
Customer Reviews:
A text for the serious student of the art.......2003-10-01
This is the best book in this genre that you will read - not that there's much competition. The title sells the book a bit short because it actually covers a wide range of eavesdropping technology, not just small radio transmitters.
This book has many strong points. The author claims to have provided equipment for numerous police forces and his experience shows in his concentration on collecting good audio, so important for courtroom use. Unlike other texts in covering this topic the author has a good grounding in basic physics (eg: circuit noise) which puts this book streets ahead of any others.
Points well covered include: microphones including placement, reflectors and resonators; EQ curves; filtering; limiting; dynamic range and analogue techniques to dig out or improve weak audio. There are more advanced techniques in amplifier design and stabilization of high gain blocks than other texts cover.
Reflecting standard professional operating procedures where audio is often sent by carrier current, ultrasonics and infrared - all of which are well treated - there is little mention of RF bugs with only a few narrow band FM circuits shown. "Shifty" also mentions repeaters (something you don't read much about) and hardwire, techniques heavily used by government agencies. Some simple but well-tried wiretapping techniques are covered. Counter bugging gets coverage with some interesting circuits, such as a time domain reflectometer. The References should be titled Further Reading.
There are some disappointments: all these techniques are old - in fact they are standard procedures from the 1930s updated with modern components. That does not mean they are bad techniques, they are well-proven, but technology has moved on. There is nothing about tapping coax, Cat5 cable or optical fibre. The RF bug section mentions sub-carriers, double sideband, wideband FM and spread spectrum but gives no circuits. There is no mention of microwaves, digital modulation or scrambling, all standard 1960s techniques. There is nothing about video. "Shifty" even dismisses as laboratory curiosities technologies in use since the 1940s. The author's writing style is too idiosyncratic by half. I had to read it twice. Not good for someone who claims to be a journalist. His war stories, though, are entertaining.
Still, if you want a Further Eavesdropping 201 textbook, this is it. This book is not for beginners, even though "Shifty" provides some good tutorials (eg: circuit board design). If you have a background in electronics and want to be able to offer professional advice on privacy and security, read this. But for stalkers and wannabe spies - this is out of your league.
the buggers bible minus the bugs.......2003-05-04
Im dissapointed! The book is both overpriced and over-hyped! In fact, there are no R.F. (radio-frequencie) bugs in the whole book. Which is something one would expect! The only chapter on rf bugs gives you some general info on what a bug is...and there are a couple of diagrams on how a 1 transistor rf core might look...(might look!) No board layouts for same . It does have a number of amplifier circuits and a nice rf sniffer(bug detector with audio) It does have a number of projects which appear to be the same as the home workshop spy. Perhaps same writer. It does have some merits but id wait till you can pick it up used.
Fantastic!. THE best Electronic Reference manual I have read.......2001-01-09
Without doubt, this book is definitely THE best Electronic surveillance Reference manual available, and is just about the most informative book I have ever had the pleasure to read. I say "Reference" because that is how I would define its contents - as a true reference, both theoretical & practical. From cover to cover, this book is packed with information regarding all aspects of analogue electronic surveillance, and includes detailed circuit diagrams (yes, with component values too!) of working examples throughout. Also included are sections on actual surveillance operations, along with a detailed "How to build bugs" section covering necessary construction techniques. Many of the circuits & techniques described can be applied in areas other than surveillance, but if it's surveillance information you're after, this book cuts through the chaff to give "hands-on" specific details which would be difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere.
The text is written in a truly interesting style, and is a refreshing change from the usual monotonous reading of electronic textbooks. The author knows his stuff, and has obviously had many years of experience in constructing & implementing bugs & taps, the level of detail proving this beyond any doubt. A word of caution, it is aimed at the competent to advanced electronic hobbyist, and/or Electronic Engineer. Some sections may prove too in-depth for the novice, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with no electronic knowledge at all. Far from being a criticism, this is a complement to the technical detail contained throughout - well worth the money!
Comprehensive treatment of analog audio survelliance.......2000-06-25
Very good, very impressive (and I don't impress easily) Most books on "covert" or "restricted" subjects are hogwash because those that know, don't tell, those that don't, do. This book offers a comprehensive, focused "build from scratch" treatment of analog audio within the skills of the mid to advanced electronic hobbyist.
The section on microphones and balanced transmission lines is by itself worth the price of admission.
Along with microphones, the book covers amplifiers, gain control, filters and compression; IR, ultrasonic and RF transmission. Unique to this book is the section on stereo bugging - rent a copy of "The Conversation" and you can see this in action in the opening scene.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, the book also contains appendixes which cover basic theory, components, design and electronic construction techniques - very hard to do well and missing from most books.
Best of all, it's fun to read (in the style of Lee Lapin) with many anecdotes of fieldcraft, even if you're just curious. If the author ever decides to do a companion book on digital/data bugging as good as this one, this truly would be the "bible" (in the literal sense of the word) of electronic survelliance.
You'll get your money's worth.......2000-04-21
Cover to cover, this book is THE reference for building bugs and wiretaps. Book contains not only theory, but schematics, descriptions, detailed assembly photographs, and a section full of circuit board layout negatives for those "do it yourself" types. I was suprised to see up-to-date wiretapping methods (Especially with photos!). Every possible electronic surveillance circuit is covered in this manual, along with two or three different modifications of each. Testing information and results also included with each circuit. Check this one out. I'm glad I did.

Humor and heartbreak: don't miss this. .......2006-03-13
This, a favorite title by Lee K. Abbott, has been joined by later of his books, none of which disappoint -- the strength of his talent and skill comes through with each new book. "Wet Places At Noon" is also still available as I write this.
If you have not read Lee K. Abbott, don't miss these stories. Accept no imitations. He writes with a mighty voice of muscle and sinew, but is deft with subtleties of character, and a rare kind of constant, underlying, wry humor. Although his voice is strong, it is the vulnerability of his characters that is their strength -- that which draws us into them. How can we not love them, flawed as we are? It is in the most human parts of them, their pain, weakness, confusion, loss, and whimsy that we identify, and yet we are shown their souls full of life, hope, and love. How can we not love them? We are them.
In Dreams Begin Responsibilities.......2001-10-29
Like the famous short story by Delmore Schartz, In Dreams Begin Responsibilities, Lee K. Abbott's stories create a vivid dream-world where we learn alongside his characters what honestly matters in life. Abbott's style has tommy gun rapidity and unyielding intensity.
No matter what I say, I will not be able to describe the energy and weight of a Lee K. Abbott story. The unique aesthetic and content of his work makes him one of the premier short fiction craftsmen in America. In Abbott we have found another fiction writing giant to join the ranks of Sherwood Anderson, Delmore Schwartz, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Raymond Carver.
Lee K Abbott's stories are humbling in their honesty.......1997-10-06
I know of no other writer who brings readers into the story's world as quickly, as deftly, as intimately as Lee K Abbott. In Dreams of Distant Lives, Abbott, using mostly first person narratives, shows us the pain in the trials that are our everyday lives, shows us who and what we are one to another--fathers to sons, husbands to wives, us to ourselves--by taking us into the lives of his characters. We become the narrator's best buddy sitting across the table drinking his beer while he tells us his tale--a secret, it seems, for no one else's ears but our own. We're drawn in, hooked, with the first words. We become, in fact, so involved, so close to the narrator, so much a part of him and his life that it feels as if we not only wear his shoes, but his socks and his shirt--heck, we're in his underware. And Abbott does it with such apparent ease.
Abbott's is a musical style; it has rhythm, a beat--it's the sound of our own hearts, of our own lives. "The Era of Great Numbers," a story about the obsession of college football, will leave you inside out laughing, nodding at its truth and with a chill against your skin. (It took me awhile to crawl back out ot that one.) In "The View of Me From Mars" (my favorite), Abbott tells a story by first telling another story that ends "...sad somehow and wise,..." which gives away the ending to "The View..." and yet, through Abbott's keen sense of style, in his expert hand, the end throws a punch to the guts. Hard.
Dreams of Distant Lives, as with all of Lee K. Abbott's collections, is well worth the time for anyone who wishes to glimpse life honestly. His style is dense, yes, his stories not for the weak-hearted. Lee K Abbot's stories are humbling.

Book Description
Movie Money is often one of the key factors in cinema plots. Characters on screen fight for it, lie for it, marry for it, steal it, counterfeit it, bet with it, burn itjust as many of us do in real life. But movie money, like its counterpart in the real world, is more than dollar signs and electronic blips on bank accounts. The "green stuff"' must be seen, smelled, fondled and caressed. To fill that important role film after film, Hollywood's storytellers have produced a wealth of imitation greenbacks, which has become a diverse, colorful and eminently collectible series.
Describing what is available, what is rare and what is valuable, the author demonstrates here just how graphically interesting these theatrical prop notes are in their own right. Based on ground-breaking research and interviews with insiders, including prop masters, set decorators and prop note masters themselves, this work catalogs and illustrates more than 270 types of motion picture and other theatrical prop moneyincluding nearly 2,000 sub-varieties. A multitude of photographs and illustrations add to this unique study.

Book Description
It has often been difficult for Christians to agree on the role that faith ought to play in national affairs. How does the gospel influence the decisions one makes with regard to controversial political and social issues? In this volume, prominent Christian thinkers and social theorists consider the role of Christian principles in American politics. While writing from a variety of theological positions, the authors share a common sense of the importance of Christian commitments and the belief that they ought to influence the life and culture of our nation.
Essays in the first section of the volume focus on historical, theological, and theoretical issues, while the second section offers practical responses to current moral and social dilemmas.
Contributors include Ronald J. Sider, Michael Cromartie, Christine D. Pohl, and Richard D. Land.

Lively tips for writing letters (or email!).......2007-01-03
Edgar Cuthwellis lightly edited this book of Lewis Carroll's miscellaneous pieces for cohesion as a single work. Many of the riddles in the "Pillow Problems" section aren't really solvable for current readers, in my opinion, but the "Night Writing" essay on the how-to's of letter writing are still quite applicable to email correspondence (and were, frankly, the reason I bought the book). Also includes some of those unstoppable rhymes that come to obsessives in the wee hours, a few hand shadows, and some tips on nocturnal eating. There's also a useful table for a letter-substitution cipher to keep a message private between sender and recipient. This is a sweet book for the Carroll or epistolary collector.

Viewpoint of a novice.......2007-01-10
I bought this book because I was to lead a group in developing an RFP but had no experience with RFP's. I don't know how this book will meet the needs of anyone with a lot of experience but I am extremely impressed by its readability, organization, and applicability. I'm still working on the project but have gotten good feedback on what I've developed, which I could not have done without the guidance and information in the book. It is logically sequenced and appears to cover all bases, though someone with a lot more experience would be better able to assess this. Impressed? Very.
RFP Review.......2006-03-15
The book is an easy read and provides me with the needed understanding of developing an RFP and template.
Resource and guidelines with a coherent approach.......2004-03-01
There are literally hundreds of good books on proposal writing, but only a tiny handful on writing RFPs. From among the handful this book stands out for a number of reasons:
(1) It clearly described the RFP process from start to finish - and RFP development is a process with a defined life cycle.
(2) The author goes well beyond the immediate objective of writing an RFP and managing the process by including thought-provoking material on post-award vendor management. This material sometimes escapes the RFP development team who is more focused on getting to the award milestone without thinking about the post-award ramifications.
(3) It's not boring - the writing is lively, and the material is presented at a fast pace. The pace, however, does not leave gaps. Every facet of the RFP process is covered in sufficient detail.
In addition to the above, the approach set forth in this book is consistent with best practices in RFP development. I especially like the copious checklists, the RFP roadmap, and the way illustrations are skillfully used to reinforce concepts and advice.
Note that the focus of this book is information technology and software acquisition. Some of the material is unique to those domains; however, the basic principles and RFP process can be used for virtually any type of RFP, from office services to purchasing furniture.
Overall, this is the one book I recommend for RFP development. If you are an IT professional, regardless of role, the chances are you will be involved in this process at some point in your career, making this book a valuable addition to your library. If you have recently been assigned to an RFP team you should get this book as soon as possible, and use it as your compass and blueprint if your organization does not already have a formal RFP process in place.
Good Resource.......2003-05-13
A great resource for preparation and review of an RFP. A helpful guide for people with and without RFP experience.
The RFP book that htelp me to do the job well done.......2003-01-04
I was in charge to define the RFP for a big imaging system project and this book gave me the tools to plan, supervise and create the RFP that point out the requirements, so the providers can easily develop the correct solution in their proposal.
This book is ahead. Has very good explanation (easy to read and understand), well structured and the examples are good to have a clear idea of the content that should have all the topic of the RFP. It gave me the tools to map the plan, the definition of the requirements and the development of the RFP document.
This book must be in any library.

A must have .......2007-02-05
Anyone with an interest in Black History should read this book. Talk about an eloquent speaker!
Reading Malcolm X for yourself.......2006-05-18
Today Malcolm X can be seen everywhere from t-shirts to U.S. postage stamps. Most people have an opinion about him. But not nearly as many have heard/read his actual words. This collection of speeches is an excellent way to rectify that. This book takes the reader virtually to Malcolm's last words spoken in public two days before his [...].
The collection includes speeches, interviews, panel discussions, and gives the reader a rich and genuine undertanding of Malcolm X in his final days as a statesman and revolutionary leader.
His internationalist view comes through in "Not just an American problem, but a world problem " He defines the Black Muslim movement, and the critical importance of education and critical thinking. This is a must read.
An outstanding book........2006-04-11
An outstanding collection of speeches from the important last year of Malcolm's life. This is a must read for any student of U.S. history from any point of view. It will be most helpful to to those looking to change the status quo.
Well edited and indexed. Excellent photos. A well put together book.

February 1965.......2006-02-28
This is the best book of Malcolms speeches from that last period in his life when he was most evolved. A must have!!!!!!!!!!
Great book on who Malcolm X is and his thoughts.......2003-01-14
This book is badly needed for people who are still stuck on the NOI days of malcolm. In 1964 on, he became a true sunni muslim and activist for the human rights of African Americans in the USA and the struggle for human rights abroad. This book surveys his last speeches and interviews in 1965. You will know who he evolved into and why we muslims call him the Shahid al Amrika the American Muslim Martyr.
Product Description
Recounts the hidden history of the labor of people of African origin and their achievements.
Customer Reviews:
the forgotten speech of malcolm x.......2007-04-10
This book uncovers a speech delivered by Malcolm X in January of 1965. In his speech Malcolm X discusses the disenfranchisement that African-Americans have suffered due to the lack of knowledge of our pre-slavery historical roots. Malcolm X reveals numerous African-American acheivements that took place long before there was an America. He also argues that this lack of knowledge is what sepearates African-Americans from other cultures, and encourages African-Americans to educate themselves and end this ignorance of our rich historical past. This book is for anyone wishing to know a little more about some of the African-Americans whom you didn't learn about in History class and those who have all ready read Malcolm X Speaks and would like to expand their collection of Malcolm X speeches. This is a book no one can afford to forget.
If Only This Were In The Schools.......2005-12-22
If only this were in the schools, especially for the teachers. Because although this is no proper textbook for history, it can be used as a guide into how to properly teach afro-american history to the youth.
Malcolm, as well read as he is, references many books as he lucidly and easily brings together many parts of history, but more importantly, a view of history. And his view of history is well-informed, well-sourced, and so full of truth it hurts to listen. But truth in history if very important, and Malcolm helps us in our studies.
A jewel of a book.......2003-06-24
During Malcolm's lifetime Pathfinder press began a relationship with him that lasted beyond his death. In co-operation with his family Pathfinder Press became the major publisher of Malcolm's speeches and writings in English and Spanish. This slim book, barely 100 pages, is one of the jewels of that collaboration.
The centerpiece of the book is a 1965 speech by Malcolm on Black history. The book also features excerpts from his autobiography and various speeches and interviews. This book is rich beyond it's size and deserves to be widely read by all.
Rich Analysis Plus Inspiration.......2002-07-21
This priceless little book consists of a talk Malcolm X gave just a month before he was assassinated in 1965. You will find a rich analysis of then contemporary local, national and international issues, exposure of little-known African civilizations, and an inspiring perspective on advancing the Afro-American liberation struggle along with the struggles of other oppressed and exploited people throughout the world.
Know your true history.......2002-07-20
This little book packs a powerful punch. Malcolm X explains clearly, and often in a humorous way, how knowing the truth about your history is necessary for building a movement to tear down racism and build a better society. The heart of the book is a speech that Malcolm gave less than a month before his death. His point is that Black people have to become aware of their true accomplishments in the past in order to change the world in the present and future. By looking at ancient African civilizations, West African kingdoms, the rise of imperialism and the history of slavery in America, Malcolm shows that Black people have played a huge role in shaping human history. Even though he spoke at a time when Black History Month was still Black History Week, his message is still totally relevant as African-Americans still face the challenge of leading a movement that can end police brutality, racist violence, political oppression and economic exploitation, while joining up with working people and the oppressed around the world. The impact of Malcolm's speech is magnified by his own explanation of how he studied Black history while in prison; and by a nice set of graphics and maps which illustrate his points.

Reverse racism and the wrong message portrayed.......2007-09-06
I am very shocked at what I read in this book. The black community in general would be outraged if a white political speaker spoke the things he said. However sadly there is many black chruches that teach this pure hate of a certain color of people. I do not agree with this book. The views and worldview perspective of hate given in it. I am surprised by the good reviews this book has got and question who these folks are:
MY view Don't buy this book buy a Martin Luther King book instead
From a 14 year old perspective.......2006-12-12
"I have a dream..." were the famous first words of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech at the Washington Street March. Many people have studied these words as the words of the most prominent black civil rights leader, but few have studied the words of the great Malcolm X. Malcolm X was a lesser known civil rights activist and leader. He was very controversial in his time, but few will argue that he is one of the smartest, most passionate men in history. This book takes you through Malcolm's childhood in Nebraska, his teenage years as a drug dealer on the streets of Harlem, and finally his adulthood, fighting for his rights as a great Islamic, black leader.
Walter Dean Myers does an excellent job of putting aside his feelings of Malcolm X and letting form your own opinion of him. Myers comes up with facts and not more so you can do this. He paints a clear portrait of Malcolm's entire life and work for young adult to adult readers. I personally enjoy the way that Myers is very straight forward in his writing but somehow adds a touch of suspense into the facts. "Malcolm was taking a dangerous course, and he knew it...if someone wanted to harm him, it could still happen. The word on the streets of Harlem was somber. Malcolm, it was said, was marked for death." p. 165. This is just one example of the suspenseful tone Myers uses to keep you turning pages. Myers writes about Malcolm as though he had known him personally and knows what times were like for him. At many points throughout the story, you feel as though you are there with Malcolm in Mecca or watching through the window as the assassination takes place. Myers keeps you into the story and wanting more and even wishing you had been able to meet the great Malcolm X first hand.
After reading this book, I think that Malcolm X's biography should be more commonly used name in places of learning. Malcolm X should be studied along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so that people don't only see one side of the civil rights movement. Though Malcolm is often misjudged or interpreted, he should be remembered as a great fighter who believed in equality and justice for all.
Walter Dean Myers Succeeds Again!.......2005-07-21
Evaluation: This is a wonderfully written biography of an influential African American, Malcolm X. Beginning with his birth in 1925 and ending with his assassination in 1965, Walter Dean Myers describes the trials and tribulations of one of America's radical African American leaders. The book details the many differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Though both men aimed to lift the African American people from their second class citizenship, Martin Luther King believed in a nonviolent approach. On the other hand, Malcolm X believed that the African American community needed to revolt. "Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way" (p. 107). These were Malcolm X's words as he described his belief that no African American solution could possibly involve fitting into a white society. Students will enjoy reading this biography. They will come to learn about a controversial figure in America. Several photographs and illustrations will help to entice even the most reluctant of readers.
A new look.......2004-09-27
Myers takes a new look at the Malcom X story with a special light on his childhood. The book is well organized with a blueprint of the structures that made up his life.
My idol, my admirer, my savior... Malcom X.......2004-02-22
Malcom X, as we know is a well known activist throughout the world. However, while reading "By any means necessary", I have come across a different Malcom X, infact the first Malocm X that I have come across with was Malcom Little. This was Malcom as a little boy, a Malcom who worked really hard in school to achive his goal to become a lawyer. But this dream of his, would only be dream because Malcom was black.Malcom's intelligence was over looked just because he was not white.
The second Malcom was a street hustler/gambler named:Detroit Red. He was the lady's man of both races:black and white.Malcom then started to use what he learnt in school in the streets to make profits. However this job did not last long because Malcom was sent to prison year 1946.This is when the third Malcom came along, in prison Malcom learnt the Islamic ways of life. When Malcom was released from prison, he then replaced Little(his given name, with X ).- X stands for the unknown being our names was lost on the slaveship.
Malcom X is a remarkable man, his name has been spoken within the slum of cities and also their capitals. While reading this book I have realised that Malcom X is my idol, my admirer, and my savior...Malcom X.

I can't seem to find an address to which this information should be directed, so here it is: This title should be listed as 'Text by William Strickland, Oral Histories selected and edited by Cheryll Y. Greene' (that's me). That's the way the credits are listed on the front cover, title page, with the Library of Congress, etc. Please correct your search function to include this information. Sometimes people still look for the book using my name. Thank you. (I had to fill in the star rating above in order to send this to you. Please disregard.)
Many Perspectives on A Changing Man.......2000-02-03
Based on the acclaimed PBS documentary, this photographic biography of the controversial African American leader combines evocative photographs with poignant memories from friends, family members, admirers and a few critics. This multifaceted examination of the militant leader's turbulent life helped me understand his rage and power. If you read his autobiography, then you will find this book especially valuable. An excellent supplement to the documentary because it includes material that they had to exclude, due to time limitations, from the documentary.
