Some useful information.......2001-12-28
This book was very helpful to us in the early days of our immigration preparation, before we had even chosen which province we were going to live in. We came from the UK, and I imagine that the book has specifically been written with European immigrants in mind. One of the authors, Benjamin Kranc, also writes for the Canada News, a monthly British publication intended for people preparing to immigrate to Canada. His articles are well written, but are intended for those who are just setting out on the long immigration process. This book seems to fall under the same category, and I would recommend it for anyone from Europe who is in the beginning stages of thinking about coming to Canada to live. But for those further down the line, with visas in hand, I don't think there is anything much in the book which would be new information. After all, if you are about to move to another country, you have probably already done a great deal of research on the Internet etc - right?
If you REALLY want to know about life in Canada, and have those precious visas or are newly-landed in Canada, I would recommend the slightly more tongue-in-cheek 'How to be a Canadian' by Ian and Will Ferguson instead. But hats off to Kranc and Roman for providing some useful information in a very easy-to-read book.
Living and Working in Canada.......2000-06-09
This book was not very helpful if you are moving from the US, probably more helpful for someone moving from, say Europe. There wasn't anything in this book that I hadn't already found by quick searches on the internet. I was hoping for more specific and detailed info.

Oh what a glorious time it was!.......2003-03-15
Aside from the covertly racist remarks, Tales of Times Square is a fun chronicle of the recent history of the classic red-light district that was as part of Americana as mom and apple pie. With stark detail, down to the exact addresses of various brothels, porn houses and other wild joints; it feels as if a walk down the old Forty Deuce and Eighth Avenue is taking place as the pages go by. A natural born writer, Friedman's eye for detail is amazing and he delivers the goods.
During its height of splendid glory it was a neighborhood that fostered more orgasms than any other making it somewhat depressing that this cultural relic known as Times Square has now been hijacked by Disney, the big developers and large corporations. Friedman does a quality job in touching on the underlying politico-economic realities responsible for the destruction of one of the last places that refused to be gentrified.
With a keen eye for the hilariously absurd and the interesting denizens populating the Square from roughly the mid 60s to the mid 80s, Friedman offers up funny and enthralling stories involving strippers, johns, swing clubbers, prostitutes, shoeshines, religious folks, kiosk workers, pornstars and others. One startling fact broached is that in the 1970s during a typical summer night it wasn't unusual to see a thousand old school style hookers plying their trade along Eighth Avenue. Today it's scarcely possible to imagine given the plethora of cops occupying America's cities.
Certainly the most indelible section of Tales of Times Square has to be the description of the famous -- or infamous depending on a person's predilections -- east coast swing club Plato's Retreat. The wild shenanigans documented are simply unbelievable. These chapters are worth the price of the book alone, although some may feel a shower's in order after reading some of this stuff.
The last bastion of a truly honky-tonk atmosphere is over. As Friedman points out it's time to make way for Mickey and Minnie Mouse. In an age of sterile corporate strip malls, Tales of Times Square is a reminder that in at least one neighborhood things used to be quite different.
The Forty Duece That Was.......2002-12-10
This may very well be the best book on Times Square,so far ( compared to Samuel Delany's "Times Square Red, Times Square Blue" and Bill Landis & Michelle Clifford's "Sleazoid Express").Josh Alan Friedman reads like a cross between Damon Runyan, and Studs Terkel, with a big dose of Jimmy Breslin vocabulary. He definitely tells it like it was, from the early history of vaudeville, to burlesque, to porno grinders, Plato's Retreat, and live sex shows. And, he heralds its demise, even in the early 80's. His character sketches are priceless! It's funny, erotic, dirty, and, at times, downright repugnant, a veritable Dantesque tour of sleaze. Welcome to the Forty Duece, suckers!
A great time capsule of what once was.......2001-11-01
There will never be another place on earth like Times Square during the heighth of its sleaze days. Friedman captures it perfectly and in this wonderful book. It seems incredible that anyone would ever want to revel in nostolgia for the old "Forty Deuce" (West 42nd Street), but now that the XXX theaters, massage parlors, pimps and hookers have been driven out, their absence can be strongly felt, leaving a gap filled today only by a Disney-dominated corporate sanitation job. If you remember the "Times Scare" of yesteryear, and maybe even miss it little bit, then this book is a must.
quintessential.......2001-09-26
This is the best document ever written about pre-AIDs pre crack Times Square. Koch era New York was the golden age of Times Square and no book captures it with less judgement than this.
PERFECT WRITER FOR THE SUBJECT.......2000-01-23
I found this work to be a very good description ot the old Times Square...that is prior to 1983. I was familiar with many of the establishments described and some of the people. Friedman's use of imagery is outstanding. He helped me to understand for the first time things that I had seen thousands of times. The author's tone is perfect. He is without moral condemnation and without excuse for the charaters in the book. His tone is one of amused...and amusing disgust. Future historians may doubt that such a place ever existed, but Freidman's description is so very true.

Book Description
"Friedman has drawn a vivid picture of the Times Square area and its denizens. He writes about the porn palaces with live sex shows, and the men and women who perform in them, prostitutes and their pimps, the runaways who will likely be the next decade's prostitutes, the clergymen who fight the smut merchants and the cops who feel impotent in the face of the judiciary."-
Publishers Weekly
This classic account of the ultra-sleazy, pre-Disneyfied era of Times Square is now the subject of a documentary film of the same name to be theatrically released this year. With this edition,
Tales of Times Square returns to print with seven new chapters.

Zap back to childhood.......2001-08-13
I love books about the backwaters of American popular culture so I was pleased to get a copy of Leslie Singer's affectionate look at ray guns of the past. The hundred color photos in this nicely presented book will provoke plenty of nostalgia for those who grew up with Buck Rogers. Mr Singer's favorite is the Atomic Disintergrator (page 18) but my favorite is the space car (page 48) streamline curves straight out of the New York World's Fair in 1939, though it was made by Wannatoys in the fifties. Not a gun but it looks so good Singer included it anyway!
If you are really into the subject have a look at: Ray Gun by Eugene Metcalf and Frank Maresca, plenty of excellent color photos, including a quite stunning gun (page 101) from sixties England, the Space Outlaw Gun. There is also a selection of film posters and boxes the guns came in. Both books have a useful bibliography and 'Ray Gun' even lists web sites.

Excellent!!!.......2004-06-27
If only every technical book was written this well! Anyone who is working with Java and XML should have a copy of this book. Highly example driven with clear explanations, the author makes using XML in your Java programs a breeze. Even better, the author has a style that makes the book fun to read as you feel like you are learning all sorts of secrets from an XML insider.
The book starts with a quick introduction to XML and then gets into how to create XML documents in your programs. The first four chapters cover everything you need to know about creating XML whether it is for XML-RPC, SOAP, or simply to store in a file. The next section covers parsing XML documents. SAX and DOM are compared and then the next eight chapters discuss these two methods of parsing documents, explaining how to use them, comparing them, and helping you determine how to decide which technique to use for which situation. The section on DOM explains not just how to parse documents using DOM but also how to create new documents. The final chapters of the book cover JDOM, XPATH, and XSLT.
Did I mention that this book is full of examples? The author doesn't rely on simply explaining how something works or how to use a technology (even though his explanations are excellent), he has examples to demonstrate everything he discusses. Each example builds upon the previous example and makes learning the techniques easy and enjoyable.
An excellent choice.......2003-08-16
I really like reading this book. It is easy to read and understand. The author does a good job of describing the XML technologies related to JAVA. This book has a lot of code to analyze. This book is a must have for the experienced developer who wants to do JAVA with XML. I have a message for the experienced developer: THE CODE WILL CHALLENGE YOU; IT CHALLENGED ME!!!
Michael
A huge amount of topics and API.......2003-08-14
This is definitely a valuable resource for anybody dealing with XML and Java, written by one of the best tech writers in town. The author covers in details a huge amount of topics and API, so many that you couldn't ask for more.
Be advised that some basic understanding of XML and intermediate Java skills are required to get the best out of this book
An excellant choice.......2003-08-07
I bought this book when it first came out. I really enjoyed reading it. The book is well written. It has a lot useful code.
The author code that can be used in the real world of JAVA and XML. I liked the books section on JDOM. This book shows the differences between DOM and JDOM. Also, this book has a lot of information on SAX, DOM, JDOM, and it shows the differences when using each. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn JAVA and XML. Make sure you are an experienced developer before purchasing this book.
Michael
Excellent Value.......2003-04-18
This book is an excellent resource for combining these two technologies, XML and Java. The author starts with the assumption that the reader is conversant in XML and at least intermediate skill level with Java. The first chapter of the book serves as a XML refresher. The author uses this chapter to reach a common understanding of terms with the reader. The first part of the book covers using many of issues of managing XML from Java and introduces two XML based services, XML-RPC and SOAP.
The remainder of the book is devoted to the various APIs for parsing XML hence the subtitle "A Guide to SAX, DOM, JDOM, JAXP, and TrAX". Throughout the book the author creates clear code examples and very readable text. This serves to develop understanding and insight in reader. This particular technical topography is under continuous change. Adapting to these changes will be much easier after having read this book.
A lot of tips and "gotchas" are shared in the book, but it is arranged so that the developer grab what he needs or he can sit and camp awhile. The book text is available at the author's website, but I prefer to read the paper copy. If you are going to use XML and Java together, this book would be a good investment.

trash.......2007-10-16
This is the worst book I have had the misfortune of buying! Save your money!!!!!!
Interesting Reading, But Where's Any Proof.......2007-04-03
I find this book to be a very entertaining mixture of supposition, guesswork, contradiction, and extraordinary searching for any evidence that could possibly be used to indicate that there is a vast underground conspiracy that really controls the United States and quite possibly all of the world.
All in all, I find it a little hard to believe and for two or three reasons:
1. I've been to the Texas School Book Depository, and to the window where the shooting was done. I could have made those shots. People don't want to think that one man could have done this, but the target was right there, an easy shot. It wasn't necessary to have a team of shooters.
2. To tie together all the things in this book from JFK to Mary Jo Kopechne, Onassis, RFK, South Vietnam, George Wallace, and many, many more would require such a huge operation, with so many people that screw ups would have occurred. All of these killings wouldn't have been as smooth as they were. Furthermore, someone would have talked. There would be some real evidence.
3. The third reason is WHY. Why would such an organization be set up in the first place. Why would it be kept going down through the centuries. Why bother?
Entertaining, but utter crap.......2007-03-12
I had heard about the Gemstone File for years as being one of the more plausible conspiracy theories out there, so I bought this book to finally see for myself. The parts of the book that are copies of what Bruce Roberts (the author of the Gemstone File) wrote are entertaining but not in the least bit believable. Mr. Roberts certainly had a vivid imagination, but his theories are full of contradictions and he makes some bold predictions that despite what Stephanie Caruana would like us to believe have never come true. The parts of the book written by Stephanie Caruana are utter crap. In assides she tries to relate the JFK assasination to our current president and makes snide comments about how things that happened 40 years ago were obvious foreshadowing of the "9/11 hoax". From this book I gather that Bruce Roberts suffered from paranoia. Stephanie Caruane comes across as nothing more than your typical left wing kook who would like us to believe that our government is run by idiots yet these idiots have managed to perpetrate a vast evil conspiracy that has been kept secret for over 50 years. I never understand why the conspiracy nuts fail to see the contradiction in this belief.
A Must Have.......2007-01-25
This book gives an overview of that which happened behind the scenes before and after the Kennedy Assassination.
Beautifully written by Stephanie Caruana, taken from orignal notes by Bruce Roberts who knew, this book is an eyeopener for those who want to know how things operate behind the political landscape.
Bought this book last night from the author!!.......2006-12-15
I bought this book last night from the author. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but after reading the reviews and looking at the price of a similar book ($193.00) - I believe this is a keeper.
Could it be that no one wants this book to be published? Get it now before it disappears and is a reasonable price. At $193 the average person can't afford a book like this and certain people in high places don't want it to be read.
Book Description
Utilizing new information and expert journalistic tactics, Thomas and Childress offer a fresh analysis of this notorious document that cloaked the richest of the rich and the most powerful men in the world in the shroud of conspiracy.

James Bond and Bruce Roberts: Better Together!.......2007-04-21
Ian Fleming was an agent for British Intelligence; Bruce Roberts wrote "diaries" exposing the secret history of the 20th Century. Kidnapping, murder, espionage, money, power--who needs fiction when the truth is so startling?
Gemstone File History.......2006-09-17
As the author of "A Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File" in 1975, on which all of the books and references to the Gemstone File have been based, I have watched with amazement how my brief summary of Bruce Porter Roberts' work has been circulated worldwide and written about by others. Six books that I know about have appeared so far. But the first book to be published which will contain a significant amount of the original Gemstone File papers will be my own: The Gemstone File: A Memoir." "Inside the Gemstone File" contains some excellent information about the relationship between Bruce Roberts' writing and Ian Fleming's James Bond novels and movies. It, together with Gerald Carroll's book, "Project Seek," provide valuable supplemental information and background regarding the Gemstone File.
Find the original documents!.......1999-09-07
The only way to know if the 350-1000 handwritten pages of Bruce Porter Roberts, given the name of the Gemstone File could be used to arrest and convict the killers of John F. Kennedy is to find them, read them, and determine where the information came from and how reliable it is.
Until the original documents are released, there is no way to know where the information came from or how reliable it is.
This is the fourth book on the subject so far, and the obvious behavior to engage in is not being followed!
Great Connections, Thoughtful, and Amazing!.......1999-08-04
If you want to read an enjoyable, indepth look at the possible truths behind the James Bond books and films, pick up this brand new book. Chapter Seven is a classic, truly a good, fun read thatgives indepth data on what Ian Fleming had in mind regarding Bond and his villians. There's convincing evidence that the supervillian Blofeld probably was based on the reallife Aristotle Onassis. The linkages are intriguing too, such as the mysterious Area 51-type location, the Hughes-clone, the Onassis-clone, the oil industry thatare evident in the 1972 Bond film based on Fleming's *Diamonds are Forever*.I'll stop there, other than to mention that right before Ian Flemingmysteriously died, he had apparently made arrangements to fly up to NewJersey to talk to his old British intelligence service buddy, Ivan T.Sanderson, according to this book. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's more history in this one book than in ten history textbooks you'll find in your local school! Highly recommended.

The Gemstone File by Richard Alan.......2004-02-20
The research that went into this book is incredible. It has been approached from a contradictory method and still reveals almost total support of the original "Skeleton Key" of Bruce Robert's Gemstone File. Every date of each event that is outlined, is backed up by newpaper and magazine articls from the New York Times, Washington Post, Look Magazine. The San Fransisco Chronicle, etc. The information concerning the events leading upto and sourrounding the assassination of JFK, portray a much more believable story then the one we have been told for decades. This book is a must to own!

Wonderful! "Unexplained Phenomena" in science literature!.......1998-11-29
If you have any interest in the unusual side of the physical world, you just HAVE to have this book! Dr. William Corliss has spent decades creating the "Sourcebook Project", a vast, multi-volume compilation of reports of unexplained phenomena taken from the pages of professional scientific literature. SCIENCE FRONTIERS is a sort of 'sampler,' it is the distilled cream of Dr. Corliss' bi-monthly anomalies newsletter, featuring hundreds and hundreds of illustrated mini-articles, all organized into chapters: Archeology, Astronomy, Biology, Geology, Geophysics, Psychology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, Esoterica. Lewis Thomas said: "We do not understand much of anything, from the "big bang," all the way down to the particles in the atoms of a bacterial cell. We have a wilderness of mystery to make our way through in the centuries ahead." This book is an excellent demonstration of the wisdom in those words.
