one of the best books I have ever read about US business........1998-11-05
Speaking to hundreds of GMs of Chinese travel agencies, I have highlighted 11 points enuciated in this book, points I believe applicable in China's travel business, such as Bill Gates' "Scanning the horizon constantly", and Motorola's pursuit of "total cuostomer satisfaction." Thanks to the co-authors.

Description:
The great challenge for agriculture in the coming decades will be to increase crop production with less water, particularly in countries with limited water resources. The partial rootzone drying (PRD) irrigation technique has been recently proposed as an agronomic practice to improve crop water productivity. However, the physiological regulation of plant water relations under the PRD is still unknown. This study was conducted to determine the photosynthetic limitations of adult olive (Olea europaea L.) trees (cv. Picholine marocaine) caused by water deficits under PRD irrigation in an experimental orchard planted in 1989 in Marrakech (Morocco). Three irrigation treatments were used: Control (irrigated with 100% of the crop evapotranspiration, on the two sides), PRD"5"0 (irrigated with 50% of the control on one side switching every two irrigations) and PRD"1"0"0 (irrigated with 100% of the control on one side, switching every irrigation). There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the diurnal evolution of leaf water potential of the olive plants between Control and PRD"1"0"0. Whereas decreasing by 50% the water supply to half of the rootzone area (PRD"5"0), caused significant decrease in time-course leaf water potential. However, this decrease was marginal despite large water saving, and resulted in similar leaf relative water content (RWC) to that of Control plants and the maintenance of the photosynthetic capacity. In fact, values of the photosynthetic parameters A"m"a"x, J"m"a"x, V"c"m"a"x, R"d, and J"m"a"x/V"c"m"a"x ratio, i.e. a parameter that gives an indication of the nitrogen partitioning between thylakoid (photochemistry) and soluble (Calvin cycle) proteins, were not significantly influenced by the irrigation treatments. Finally, our results showed that leaf gas exchange studies of stomatal versus non-stomatal limitations to photosynthesis based on conventional measurements made at ambient [CO"2], could lead to significant underestimations of diffusional limitations.

Description:
Salinity is currently one of the most severe abiotic factors limiting agricultural production. The high rates of population growth and global warming are expected to further exacerbate the threat of salinity, especially in areas with a semi-arid climate as in the Mediterranean region. Salinity affects plant performance through the development of osmotic stress and disruption of ion homeostasis, which in turn cause metabolic dysfunctions. Particular emphasis is given on the impacts of salinity on photosynthesis because of its potential restrictions on plant growth and yield. The inhibition of photosynthesis under low to moderate salinity stress appear to be mainly attributed to diffusional limitations (stomatal and mesophyll conductance), even for salt-sensitive fruit trees such as citrus trees. In contrast, biochemical limitations to photosynthesis appear to occur only when stress becomes heavy. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms conferring salt tolerance is therefore essential under the expected climatic change, as it will enable the selection of salt-tolerant genotypes and the adoption of appropriate practices to alleviate salinity impacts on agricultural production. In fruit trees, salt tolerance is mainly associated with their ability to restrict salt accumulation in the leaves. Cell features of specific tissues, morphological factors and water-use efficiency regulate salt accumulation in the shoot. Furthermore, most fruit trees display a rapid osmotic adjustment in response to salinity, which is mainly attributed to the accumulation of inorganic ions and carbohydrates. Little information is available about the ability of horticultural crops to detoxify reactive oxygen species and to synthesize compatible solutes and hence on the potential contribution of these mechanism to induce salt tolerance in horticultural crops.

Description:
This integrated study examines the implications of changes in crop water demand and water availability for the reliability of irrigation, taking into account changes in competing municipal and industrial demands, and explores the effectiveness of adaptation options in maintaining reliability. It reports on methods of linking climate change scenarios with hydrologic, agricultural, and planning models to study water availability for agriculture under changing climate conditions, to estimate changes in ecosystem services, and to evaluate adaptation strategies for the water resources and agriculture sectors. The models are applied to major agricultural regions in Argentina, Brazil, China, Hungary, Romania, and the US, using projections of climate change, agricultural production, population, technology, and GDP growth. For most of the relatively water-rich areas studied, there appears to be sufficient water for agriculture given the climate change scenarios tested. Northeastern China suffers from the greatest lack of water availability for agriculture and ecosystem services both in the present and in the climate change projections. Projected runoff in the Danube Basin does not change substantially, although climate change causes shifts in environmental stresses within the region. Northern Argentina's occasional problems in water supply for agriculture under the current climate may be exacerbated and may require investments to relieve future tributary stress. In Southeastern Brazil, future water supply for agriculture appears to be plentiful. Water supply in most of the US Cornbelt is projected to increase in most climate change scenarios, but there is concern for tractability in the spring and water-logging in the summer. Adaptation tests imply that only the Brazil case study area can readily accommodate an expansion of irrigated land under climate change, while the other three areas would suffer decreases in system reliability if irrigation areas were to be expanded. Cultivars are available for agricultural adaptation to the projected changes, but their demand for water may be higher than currently adapted varieties. Thus, even in these relatively water-rich areas, changes in water demand due to climate change effects on agriculture and increased demand from urban growth will require timely improvements in crop cultivars, irrigation and drainage technology, and water management.

Book Description
Engineers and scientists have made great progress in advancing the understanding of the principles underlying environmental quality and public health. However, all too often, society and the scientific community do not realize the connections between environmental occurrences. In their haste to remedy a situation, they overlook lessons that could be learned to prevent future disasters. Paying attention to the past instructs us about the future.
Paradigms Lost combines the historical case perspective with credible and sound scientific explanations of key environmental disasters and problems. The author sorts through natural disasters and human mistakes from Love Canal, New York to Bhopal, India to provide larger lessons that can be applied by scientists, engineers and public safety officials. The analysis of these events includes viable alternatives for future generations.
* Includes alternative approaches to environmental issues from preventative measures to contingency plans
* Richly annotated with sidebars, discussion boxes and generous examples from Exxon Valdez and Love Canal to Agent Orange and Bhopal
* A usable tool for all professionals from lawyers to chemical engineers

The Voice of Reason.......2002-03-25
There is a disturbing new trend in "popular science" to justify New Age and mystical beliefs using misinterpreted scientific ideas. Most experimental physicists are content to ignore this trend and continue in their research, regardless of how people choose to interpret it. Others are careless enough to make ambiguous statements about physics and the nature of reality that add fuel to the fire of pseudoscience. Victor Stenger is a refreshing voice of reason, with a solid background as a respected experimental physicist.
First of all, Dr. Stenger is not attacking parapsychology. Rather, he is defending science from those who try to corrupt it by putting parapsychology on the same level, or use scientific ideas to support unscientific theories. Science, specifically physics, has a rigorous standard of evidence and experimental verifiability under controlled conditions. Any theory that claims to be scientific must meet these standards to justify that claim. Psychic powers, and the other supernatural phenomena addressed in this book, have never met these standards.
To summarize, this book is not anti-supernatural, it is just pro-science. Dr. Stenger does an excellent job of showing that supernatural phenomena are not scientifically established, and probably never will be, or they would have been experimentally verified a long time ago. If you choose to believe in the supernatural, feel free, but don't try to justify your beliefs scientifically.
Informative but Unconvincing.......1998-02-11
This book is good in that it identifies problems in understanding the paranormal in terms related to physics, especially relativity and quantum physics. The author indicates that the new world of quantum mechanics and relativity makes it improbable that the paranormal is real, even more so than the world of Newtonian physics. I personally do not agree with that conclusion. Quantum mechanics and relativity have demonstrated that the real world may be different than commonly assumed, however the author has suddenly concluded that all paranormal phenomena is fraud, delusion, you name it, anything but a possibility that it is true, and thus is making the same mistake as those who were so convinced that Newtonian mechanics was the final world that they refused to consider anything else. In my opinion I am very skeptical that all paranormal phenomena is fraudulent, resulting from wishful thinking, delusion, etc. There is just a bigger world out there than we have imagined and which remains to be explained.

The Nanny Diaries is an absolutely addictive peek into the utterly weird world of child rearing in the upper reaches of Manhattan's social strata. Cowritten by two former nannies, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, the novel follows the adventures of the aptly named Nan as she negotiates the Byzantine byways of working for Mrs. X, a Park Avenue mommy. Nan's 4-year-old charge, the hilariously named Grayer (his pals include Josephina, Christabelle, Brandford, and Darwin) is a genuinely good sort. He can't help it if his mom has scheduled him for every activity known to the Upper East Side, including ice skating, French lessons, and a Mommy and Me group largely attended by nannies. What makes the book so impossible to put down is the suspense of finding out what the unbelievably inconsiderate Mrs. X will demand of Nan next. One pictures the two authors having the last hearty laugh on their former employers. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
The Nanny Diaries has become an international phenomenon. Reviewed, featured, mentioned, or dissected in every major newspaper, magazine, and on every national and local television show, The Nanny Diaries has struck a chord with readers everywhere. With more than 650,000 copies currently in print and atop bestseller lists nationwide, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus' biting satire of the glamorous life on Manhattan's Upper East Side offers both an insider's view and a great read. 'Addicting,'* 'delicious,'** and 'diabolically funny'***, The Nanny Diaries is sure to be the must-read paperback of 2003. Struggling to graduate from New York University and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a job caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved in ensuring that a Park Avenue wife who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child has a smooth day. A poignant satire, The Nanny Diaries punctures the glamour of Manhattan's upper class to reveal the truth behind the Park Avenue veneer.
Customer Reviews:
Good writing. Unbelievable insight........2007-10-07
Wow. This book touched me because I know it's based on reality. The two authors experienced the surreal world of rich, non-feeling mothers serving as the inspiration for the book.
*spoilers to follow*
I was floored when Mrs. X became pregnant again. Completely self-centered and trying to hang on to the last thread of her marriage to her obviously cheating husband.
How she couldn't stand to be alone with her son.
How she couldn't even begin to understand the bond her young son had with Nanny. And it was more important to punish her for not respecting her authority than the devastating impact it might have on her child. (How dare her want to attend her own college graduation??)
The best laugh out loud moment for me was when Nanny was completely trapped in Nantucket for over a week I believe ... and took advantage of Mrs. X's "post-coital glow" and actually asked permission to leave early. I think it was the only time in the book Mr. X paid any attention to Mrs. X so of course, the answer was "yes." Too much.
I thank the authors for the insight into this interesting / sad world.
As a deep-feeling, very involved mother, I'm floored that there are mothers out there like Mrs. X. You can have your Park Ave. apartments and unlimited bank accounts and french "lavender water." I'll keep my coupons, Walmart and beautiful babies' hugs and kisses. :) :) :)
It was OK.......2007-10-03
Wasn't thrilled with the book. I had heard wonderful things - people raving about this book & with the movie coming out, I couldn't wait to read it. But it wasn't as great as I had antisipated, nor as great as people had let me to believe. It was OK - took me a while to get into it. Then I thought it kind of ended abrubtly. But it was OK. Amusing at times to see what Nan had to put up with, but not alot in it to keep me coming back for me. It actually took me a while to finish.
Loved It!!.......2007-10-01
I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down! It's a must read for anyone who works with children and enjoys it like I do!
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-09-27
Nanny is going to NYU to get her degree in child care, but first she must deal with the X's.
The X's are a typical rich New York family: Dad is a workaholic; Mom doesn't have a job but is too busy shopping and running her social life to raise her child; Grayer (nicknamed Grover/Grov) is the four-year-old who wants nothing more than his parents' attention.
Nanny becomes very attached to Grayer, who is absolutely adorable and really likes Nanny because she is the one raising him. Nanny and Grayer go on many adventures together and Nanny must deal with the crazy Mrs. X, who doesn't come home when she says she will, doesn't pay within a normal time frame, and is just downright mean to Nanny -- and to her own child.
This is a great story of love and affection, and also the lack of it. I really liked reading this book because Nanny has a life outside of her job, like falling in love with H.H.-Harvard Hottie. Nanny and Grayer are realistic and the parents are the crazy people in the book, which makes this a great view for teens.
I had a lot of fun reading THE NANNY DIARIES, and will recommend it to all of my friends who have ever babysat for crazy parents!

a little too dark .......2007-09-27
I read this book expecting to get a good laugh, but instead found a very dark tale about a girl who discovers the struggles of being a nanny for New York high society. While the novel is very well written and quickly grabs one's interest, I didn't find the book at all funny. If you're looking for an amusing story, you're not going to find it here.

"Two former Manhattan nannies blow the lid off of the private child-care industry with a hilarious debut that pulls no punches as it recounts the travails of Nan, a hip Mary Poppins looking for a job to fit around her classes at NYU. Mrs.
