Don't buy Open Minds and Creative Company together - they are the same book!
I reluctantly changed the name Open Minds for the US market, because the publisher convinced me it was a better title!.

A Great Book but...........2001-03-18

Yes, this is a great book. But if you're looking to buy it because you enjoyed the "Creative Company", don't buy this book. Because it is the same book, just with a different name and some of the stuff at the back of the other book is at the front of this one. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the bookstore and return it.

It provides an overview of the dramatic progress made in illuminating the properties of deep slabs and the surrounding mantle since the introduction of the plate tectonics model to the earth sciences more than 25 years ago. The thermal and chemical characteristics of the subducted lithosphere are determined through thermal and petrological modeling, with seismological observations providing critical constraints on model parameters. Down-wellings of the oceanic lithosphere play a critical role in plate tectonics by recycling to the mantle material that has risen at mid-ocean ridges and cooled at the earth's surface. To assist future efforts in developing detailed thermal and petrological models of oceanic lithosphere down-wellings, this volume includes a comprehensive review of seismological observations and models. A range of seismological procedures are considered, from travel time constraints on seismic velocity anomalies in the subducting lithospheric slabs, to wave conversions and reflections off internal and external slab boundaries. An extensive reference list will be useful to earth science researchers and seismological specialists as a directory to most of the critical literature on slab structure.

The Fate of Subducting Slabs should not be the same as the Stories of Subducting Slabs. Some materials choosen for this book have no real scientific value.

Why all the contention?.......2007-06-23

I see that some people loved this book while others hated it. Personally, I loved it, for it's humor and fun sexuality, even if the plot line was far-fetched; a little suspension of disbelief goes a long way. Usually, McAllister's books start out a little slow for me (I put down both this and Hard Day's Knight for a few weeks), but I know now to stick with them because they always end up delightful. I really wish she would get away from the paranormal genre and try her hand at westerns, as well as another pirate novel. For the time being, I'll read whatever she writes, as I love her books, especially this one.

This was only the second of Katie's non-paranormal books I've read. I was hooked on the premise and the humor from the start! As usual with Katie's books, I couldn't put it down. There is a bit of mystery to the novel as well, which leaves you wondering who the bad guy really is...

I truly enjoied the charectors in this book, they were reall people I could relate to. I liked that the women in this book are agresseive and selfasured, not wimpering pudles of goo. It is nice to see someone acknowledging that a woman can save her hearo back to.

I really enjoyed her book Improper English; there was a lot of humor in it to say the least. This book got very boring for me and I just couldn't finish it. This is the first book I have not finished. I ALWAYS finish every book I buy. This on was just a grave disappointment. I definitely would not recommend.

Baur and Summers had no great motive for inventing a holiday, as they explain succinctly in Chapter Two: "Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple." And to help readers engage in as much fun as possible, they have devised the parameters of Pirattitude, the state of mind needed to squeeze the most juice from the day. The definition and test for Pirattitude waits in Chapter Three. Then, in Chapter Four, you can try your hand at a brief test of pirate trivia to prove if you know the name of Blackbeard's ship (was it Queen Anne's Revenge or Sissybritches?) and if a proper slug of grog contains rum or Sprite as a primary ingredient. Trust me, the test isn't very hard.

OK, now we get to the meat of the book. You wanna talk like a pirate? You gotta know the lingo. And these guys want to help you, although they readily admit their research "involved more beer and pizza than actually looking things up." So get ready to pepper your speech with everything from "avast" to "barnacle," from "lubber" to "wench," from "booty" to "salmagundi." And, once you know the words, these scurvy sea dogs help you still more by describing ways to put your new vocabulary to work at home, school, work, church and pretty much anywhere else you might find yourself. (They even provide the very helpful warning that "most women do not consider the phrase 'Prepare to be boarded!' an adequate substitute for foreplay.")

To fill out the book (because it really is pretty slim, after all) the two rum-soaked bilge rats (see how I cunningly weave these piratical words into my text?) provide the lyrics to a new pirate song, biographical tidbits about some real, honest-to-gosh pirates as well as some who exist only on the silver screen, a personality test to determine your level of pirattitude, an advice column and a peek at Baur and Summers' secret ambition.

That's it. That's all there is to it. Well Blow Me Down! is a funny, silly book by two silly, funny men who had nothing to do so they created a modern phenomenon. So don't forget to celebrate Mark's ex-wife's birthday each year by indulging the wee pirate that's in us all!

The lads have done well with this book. Not only do they bring home vocabulary tips, but also the history and underlying fun in talking like a bloodthirsty buccaneer. A trip through its pages'll have you confounding others in no time...

I find myself laughing out loud (something I haven't done since reading Bryson's, A Walk in the Woods) and thinking of all kinds of people I want to share this book with. Spritely and clever and very fun!

I laughed at everything in this book! I heard about these guys on the radio last year and had a blast celebrating talk like a pirate day on September 19th. I loved the pirate quizzes and all the fun pirate lingo. This September I look forward to calling my boss "a scurvy bilge rat " and telling him to "dance the hempen jig" and other fine phrases found in, "Well Blow Me Down." I laughed so hard I cried when I read the last chapter where the Pirate Guys dream of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Pure fun!
