    Book Description

CORPORATE CRIME / PATHOLOGY / HOSPITAL POLITICS.
Murders--mixed with corporate crime, hospital politics, pathology and psychiatry training--reveal the wonders of science and human nature at its worst.

Join Dr. Whipple in his earlier years, when his sense of fairness and overabundance of stubbornness get him in trouble as it does in his later years in "Pathologist In Peril" and "Pathologist On Call."

Over 50 line drawings accompany this story of crime, medicine, and mystery.

      Book Description

Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE) is a new discipline of economics, largely grounded on concepts like evolution, auto-organisation and emergence: it intensively uses computer simulations as well as artificial intelligence, mostly based on multi-agents systems. The purpose of this book is to give an up-to date view of the scientific production in the fields of Agent-based Computational Economics (mainly in Market Finance and Game Theory). Based on communications given at AE'2005 (Lille, USTL, France), this book offers a wide panorama of recent advances in ACE (both theoretical and methodological) that will interest academics as well as practitioners.

        Book Description

This year's volume of the Comparative Law Yearbook of International Business deals with various aspects of the arbitration process. Some of the areas covered include the appointment of arbitrators, the points to be borne in mind by arbitrators during the conduct of arbitral proceedings, the evidentiary procedures involved in arbitration, and the advantages and disadvantages of arbitration when pitted against conventional litigation. Crucial to any successful arbitration is good preparation, in particular the setting down in an arbitral agreement of the intentions of the parties with regard to any future disputes that may arise between them. Ideally, the parties should agree, inter alia, upon the type of arbitration, the choice of law, the situs, and the number and appointment of arbitrators. The appointment of the arbitrators is a very important consideration in the conduct of an arbitration procedure. First, one must decide whether a sole arbitrator or a panel of three or more arbitrators is preferable in the specific circumstances, taking into account such criteria as cost, time, complexity of the issue, and the experience of the arbitrators. These points also, of course, have a bearing upon whether one chooses to arbitrate in the first place or whether litigation would be a more suitable route. Various factors in making these decisions are discussed in detail by the authors in this volume, and much valuable guidance is given to those involved in the arbitration process.

                Book Description

This book discusses the application of geological methods and theory to archaeology. Written as a survey text covering appropriate methods and techniques taken from geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and geochronology, it shows the student the practicality and importance of each technique's use in solving archaeological problems. Specific techniques are illustrated by practical results obtained from the authors' use on archaeological digs. With an international geographical scope, the book draws on sites from both hemispheres, including the Franchthi Cave in Greece, St. Catherines Island in the U.S., the Roman site of Drand in France, and Monte Verde, Chile. The authors also address applications in less traditional areas such as underwater, historical, industrial, and conservation archaeology.

                        Book Description

This original new text provides an easily accessible introduction to this important new topic in time series analysis. The authors emphasize examples over theoretical explanations and the need for proper and careful statistical tests in the context of data exploration. The book's focus is on the application of the method in signal detection, filtering, and prediction. Instructors and students will appreciate the step-by-step presentation of underlying ideas.

4 out of 5 stars informal treatise for an undergrad.......2006-05-29

Elsner and Tsonis give a foray into an application of linear algebra. You need to know how to diagonalise a square matrix, and that this process amounts to finding the eigenvalues of that matrix. The book is brief, and is written at a pace that should be accessible to a maths or physics undergrad. The explanations are not as terse as those typically found in journal papers. This is meant to be a textbook, after all.

However, for a maths text, there is no attempt at a formal theorem-based exposition. The book reads more like an informal treatise whose purpose is to get you to grasp and use the basic ideas, without worrying too much about the rigour.

It might also help to have a maths package available whilst going through the book. It will let you run the book's methods on your data in a quick manner. Instead of having to code from scratch.

3 out of 5 stars Useful (although expensive) introduction to SSA.......2001-05-26

This text is divided into three main parts: 1) Mathematical notes, 2) Theory and Methods, 3) Applications. As a reader interested in time series analysis but unfamiliar with singular spectrum analysis (SSA) per se, I was not really sure what SSA was exactly, or what it is suppose to accomplish, until nearly halfway into the book. Very early on, I found no one single sentence, paragraph, definition, or description that clearly defined SSA beyond a "technique based on spectral decomposition."

Although the text is clearly written and well organized, the authors' target audience is not well established. For example, Section I starts with an rather remedial primer on linear matrix algebra, yet Section II already seems to assume the reader has a fairly mature knowledge of statistical inference, hypothesis testing, and principal component analysis (which might be gained from courses on statistical analysis of variance, or ANOVA). The authors also make frequent references to other time series analysis techniques, such as ARMA modeling and Fourier analysis in Section III. Familiarity with ANOVA and other kinds of time series analyses will certainly benefit the reader.

One gets the impression that the manuscript has been enhanced to fill a textbook-sized volume (and would explain why the book dedicates an entire chapter to numerical examples illustrating such things as how to multiply two matrices). The font size is strikingly large for a 6" x 9" textbook, and the layout is noticeably fragmented with lots of section subtitles and large amounts of white space around these section titles. Specifically, each page accommodates no more than 34 lines of 4 1/4" wide text, which I compared with several textbooks this size which usually accommodated 40-45 lines of 4 1/2" wide text (I suspect the 153 page content might have been fitted into about 100 pages just by changing the book layout). Given the quite basic subject matter of the first few chapters, the remainder of the book is but a fairly short survey on the main subject of SSA. The advantage is that its contents can be covered relatively quickly.

The rarity of introductory texts specifically dedicated to this niche subject matter, and the uncomplicated presentation the authors have chosen, make this book a worthwhile, albeit expensive, introduction to the topic. This book has nice presentation qualities, and had it been issued as a thin, inexpensive paperback, this would more easily be a 4 or 5 star book. Similarly, this is a 4 star book for the prospective reader analyzing data related to the atmospheric sciences or climatology (as much of the authors' background materials emphasize these areas). An expanded second edition would be welcomed.

This book is a breath of fresh air for anyone who is attempting teach time series analysis to themselves; especially the Spectral Analysis techniques. The book has three primary strengths. First, it assembles between two covers EVERYTHING that one needs to understand the developement of Spectral Methods. Secondly, the authors write in a very clear manner with no attempt to obfuscate the material. The authors clearly want to teach these techniques rather than satisfy some publish or perish requirements. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, the book has detailed and completely worked out examples using actual numbers in the matrices. One may think symbology should be enough but actual numbers make it very easy to trace the logic . This is a terrific tome and destined to becoming a teaching classic. It has generrated the longest series (no pun intended) of "Ah Ha!" experiences for me that I have had the pleasure of in a very long time. Why can not every text explain singular value decomposition the way these authors have? Showing the link between difference equations and differential equations and the segue into them is a work of art. I am very pleased with my purchase

Mark Helprin's picaresque romp, Freddy and Fredericka, begins with a secret rite on a Scottish hillside: the Prince of Wales, poised in his crisp field uniform, urges a falcon named Craig-Vyvyan to fly from his arm. The latest in a line of royal falcons with the ability to discern true kings and queens, Craig-Vyvyan sniffs the air, sizes up the bewildered heir to the throne, and refuses to budge. The falcon knows he isn't king-material, and so does the falconer, and so, in his heart of heart's, does the Prince of Wales. From this promising opening, Helprin spins a tale that ricochets in tone between the silliness of The Naked Gun movies and the gravity of a Wesleyan sermon. To prove their worth and prepare them to rule, the Prince and Princess of Wales--loose caricatures of Charles and Diana--are parachuted naked into New Jersey by night and ordered to reconquer America for Britain.

Helprin's theme is nobility--acquired, as well as innate. He puts the spoiled but well-meaning Prince and Princess through a series of farcical trials before they reach the startling conclusion that clean living, hard work, and humility will bring out the best in them. The "funny" parts of Freddy and Fredericka would have benefited from vigorous pruning--the book itself is too long--but there are stirring passages on love and duty sprinkled among the gags and loopy names, and some spectacular landscape descriptions--covert portraits of the force that drives the green fuse through the flower and gives the House of Windsor its curious destiny. --Regina Marler

                          Book Description

Mark Helprin's legions of devoted readers cherish his timeless novels and short stories, which are uplifting in their conviction of the goodness and resilience of the human spirit. Freddy and Fredericka—a brilliantly refashioned fairy tale and a magnificently funny farce—only seems like a radical departure of form, for behind the laughter, Helprin speaks of leaps of faith and second chances, courage and the primacy of love. Helprin's latest work, an extraordinarily funny allegory about a most peculiar British royal family, is immensely mocking of contemporary monarchy and yet deeply sympathetic to the individuals caught in its lonely absurdities. BACKCOVER: “With a pitch-perfect sense of the absurd . . . he has produced a delightful romp of a book.”
—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Freddy and Fredericka recalls American journeys of self-discovery by Mark Twain, John Steinbeck and Jack Kerouac. . . . I promise you, this will be one of the fastest . . . novels you'll ever read.”
                          —Los Angeles Times

“A rollicking, heartwarming examination of the state of the nation . . . Working his own magic, Helprin transforms the thinly veiled satire of the monarchy into a quirky love song to the colonies.”

I couldn't wait to finish this book so I could legitimately rave about it. And now that I have finished, I can't praise it as unreservedly as I would like. First though: the prose, oh the prose. Butterscotch and gold. The thing is almost perfect until after the penultimate section ("Manifest Destiny"). Delectable literary jokes throughout. Pages of hilarious dialogue (and what, after all, is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?). But most of all, it yields more moments of sheer satisfied joy than any book I can remember reading. It answers the question of how we are to live.

Then in that final section, to my great dismay, something changed and Helprin started hitting false notes that made me cringe, especially after so many chapters of such symphonic perfection. He did recover in the last two chapters, at least a little bit. The right tone for the ending was bittersweet and he finally seemed to recognize that. After the tremendous fire scene (I won't spoil it by saying what happened), he shouldn't have even tried to return to his previous tone; he should have colored the rest of the book with its memory, its sacrificial crimson.

I highly recommend the book, but with reservations.

I am sad to agree with the reviewer that said this was one of the worst books he/she had tried to read, because I was so excited to buy this book - from the description on the back to the enthusiastic one-liners from newspapers sprinkling the cover. It even started out nicely, with enormous promise in the first 15 pages or so, but ever since I have found almost every page painful to read. It is as if someone had a really elaborate dream they decided to write down ... nothing makes any sense, nothing seems to really drive the plot forward, and what could have been a fun premise instead is just words, words, words and even more words. It seems like it should be funny, it seems like a great idea, but none of it translates into anything with any real logic or that makes me want to read more about these characters and their adventures.

Mark Helprin is capable of writing some of the most elegant prose in contemporary fiction. He can make anything he describes sing with life. That is his strength. But he is no humorist and is out of his depth when he tries to be witty. He is alternately earnest and silly in this novel. The wordplay and puns are facile and make his more heartfelt observations, where he reverts to type, seem cringingly inappropriate. Freddy and Fredericka may have been a lark to write, but it is not all that much fun to read. I was distracted by Helprin's self-indulgence almost all the way through. At least the author had a good time. I did not.

5 out of 5 stars Who's on First? This book hurts-- your chest from laughing.......2007-01-30

Generally I dislike silly over the top farce, especially when it picks an easy target-- and making fun of the British monarchy falls into that category.

The plot of this book involve a geeky, overeducated prince with big ears (Charles-ish) and a beautiful, airheadish blonde Princess (Diana-like). When a noble falcon refuses to fly for the prince-- the falcon is the real "king-maker," unbeknownst to the general public-- Freddy and Fredericka are sent on a secret mission by the mysterious Mr. Neil to reconquer the colonies by parachuting in, nude, with no resources.

OK, the plot is silly. But here's the thing-- it allows a gorgeous picaresque with scene after scene of what's beautiful and hilarious about America.

Throughout the book, Helprin often indulges parallel line conversation a la "Who's On First"-- "My father, who's sane," the prince says at a press conference. "Your father Hussein?" says a dumbfounded press agent.

And so it goes. Favorite bits include the prince (before being sent on a mission) calling a dog named "Taxi" and having to brush away meek and bewildered taxi drivers who keep coming up to help...

At times the plot is a little draggy and I wasn't feeling the big romance of the prince and princess falling in love with each other for real.

But stick it out to the last 100 pages because that's where the humor REALLY kicks in. It felt like I was laughing out loud to the point of tears and helplessness every five pages. I almost dreaded turning the page because my chest hurt so much. You wouldn't think there's any new humor to be found in American politics post the Daily Show, but Helprin manages to find some-- and he writes some of the funniest press conferences every imagined, not to mention an acceptance speech that begins with the line "Have you ever had a hair on your tongue?"

And it adds up to more than a Monty Python romp-- it adds up to a valentine to the chivalry of what being a king means, and the glory of what democracy is.

This makes the book so much more than situation comedy and wordplay-- it makes it something with a point sneaking its way into your gut. A joy!

Helprins sheer comic brilliance shines in this ingenious farce. A thinly veiled satire of what might have happened to the British monarchy if Princess Diana had survived, Freddy and Fredericka is an imaginative gem full of clever wordplay and wicked political jabs.
