Excellent no-nonsense account of a commercial organic farm.......1997-10-19
Many books on organic farming concentrate on the theory and or the morality of organic methods. This book give a practical account of how a large commercial farm has successfully been converted to organic methods. It's also readable and very entertaining.

Book Description
World-altering discoveries that reveal a universe of uncertainty and constant change
Whether probing the farthest reaches of the vast universe or exploring the microscopic world of genetics and the subatomic world of quantum mechanics, Instability Rules is a remarkably informative and engaging look at ten milestone discoveries and their discoverers-a wide range of very human personalities whose insights have dramatically altered our most basic assumptions about human existence during the last century. The stories include Edwin Hubble and the expanding universe, Alfred Wegener and continental drift, Neils Bohr and quantum mechanics, Alan Turing and artificial intelligence, and James Watson and Francis Crick and DNA. Also covering discoveries of the twenty-first century that are already refining these and other ideas, Instability Rules is an exhilarating, sometimes amusing encounter with the defining scientific discoveries of our age.

Instability Rules.......2003-12-29
I have never had much hope of enjoying a read about quantum mechanics, Einstein's relativity theory or an explanation of the Planck instant, but I was in for a very pleasant surprise. Charles Flowers has accomplished just that with Instability Rules.
He has cut through the mind-numbing aspects of these subjects in a way that is not typical of a science book, using prose that is personal and accessible and a very clever sense of humor. This book is beautifully written, wonderfully entertaining, and, along the way, manages to explain the almost inconceivable with elegant simplicity. An excellent read!
Disappointing.......2003-10-01
"Like our hominid predecessors, if we die out, we're toast. Extinction is a one-time thing."
Heck. Why would anyone waste time writing that? Yet every page of this book contains at least one such pointless observation.
I wish it had not been that way. I started reading this book with real enthusiasm. The chapter subjects are well chosen and the chapters themselves are just the right length to be an inviting read. Overall the book is a great idea. But as much as I tried to like this book, it kept on letting me down.
Here's passage taken at random that shows why this book is so hard to stick to:
"Our view now has to be more complex, and perhaps more troubling, even if our fates are ultimately the same: some of those trillions of cells incessantly dividing, making uncountable manufacturing decisions according to instructions set up in a kind of game of chance, may even now be unpredictably going off-message, spreading out of control as cancer, or producing protein molecules that, directly on message, will somehow bring on early-onset Alzheimer's disease, so that proud but unlucky Achilles will not only forget why he slaughtered Hector but even what a Hector might be."
Most of the book's faults are present in that passage: windiness, cliche ("game of chance"), sudden use of flip phrases or slang ("going off-message"), pompous allusion (Achilles and Hector), and an unfunny half-joke, all in one tortured, endless sentence.
As both the above excerpts indicate, there's a lot of "We-ing" and "Us-ing", that is, pronouncements affecting to be on behalf of a We or Us who's never identified. It's very annoying, solemn yet glib, like an obit written by a sports columnist.
Read this book if you want a newspaper-style precis of a precis of some scientific breakthroughs, and can overlook the lumpy style.
Catch Up Before It All Collapses.......2002-05-05
No one since Isidore of Seville has tried to summarize all the scientific knowledge of his epoch as valiantly as Charles Flowers. The most fun is to be had from watching him try, especially if you've previously read much longer and denser books on one or all of the ten topics Flowers has chosen to elucidate. Instability rules is a bargain, both in money and in precious reading time; ten tomes in one. The writing is graceful, precise, witty, and merciful to the non-scientist. Particularly for the reader who hasn't kept up his/her humanistic education in the sciences, Instabilty Rules will provide a comprehensible introduction to ten of the most profound ideas of the past century.
Good science and good writing.......2002-03-23
The Big Ideas in science are always the most fun for the layman to think about, and this book gives us overviews of 10 of those ideas -- from the Big Bang to the human genome -- in 10 engaging essays. The material has been covered before, but what sets the book apart is Flowers is a writer first, a science writer second. The writing is a pleasure to read -- warm, lucid, enthusiastic ... interesting while not talking down to the reader. The only criticism is the photos, which are uninteresting head shots of scientists. There are certainly many more interesting visuals the publisher could have selected to illustrate Flowers's fascinating essays.

Good thing I do Kegels.......2007-08-28
..else I would have peed myself laughing through the entire book. Tim Dorsey has Carl Haissen's ideas forming in Raoul Duke's head. Awesome read, reminded me of a drunken weekend roadtrip from college days here in Tampa - but far more lethal. As a third generation Tampa Cracker and Gasparilla Pirate, I must say Tim has totally pegged not only the Bay Area but it's character and those characters you see daily around town. (Makes you consider a permit to carry) If you have never been to FL, this is a must read to prepare yourself for the trip. If you live here, you're going to love this book because it feels like home in a twisted and perverted (but enjoyable) way.
Not Tim Dorsey's best work .......2007-08-19
My first introduction to the strange and twisted world of Serge A Storms was in Triggerfish Twist. It was fantastic! After reading it I had high hopes for Tim Dorsey, who has a unique and twisted way of writing that is sometimes like being hit by a hurricane.
I was extremely disappointed with Florida Roadkill - not that it's a bad book exactly, just disappointing. It is the first part in a two book series with Hammerhead Ranch Motel. The book's flow is a bit slow and very scattered - events do not appear in chronological order. There are several characters introduced and you have to trudge through most of the book before it is clear how they are connected. Although I have not given up all hope for Dorsey - I would say skip this book, but definitely check out Triggerfish Twist.
Great Fun!.......2007-06-25
Florida Road Kill is a zany, fast-paced trip through Florida with a variety of colorful and somewhat unusual characters. Tim Dorsey shows us a different Florida than we see as tourists on the beach or at a theme park. His Florida is a bit raunchier and an often hilarious place. Florida Road Kill was the bait and now I'm into the series hook, line and sinker.
Dark humor and wacky situations.......2007-06-12
Although not as good as his other book, "The Stingray Suffle", it is an enjoyable read. Granted the characters and the plot are not exactly plausible but if you enjoy dark humour, sarcasm and wacky situations then you should read this.
Tim Dorsey makes an accurate description of Florida and his characters are certainly interesting.
A book to read during your summer vacation that will make you laugh.
Florida Road Rash.......2007-03-03
It's difficult to determine a reason for "Florida Road Kill" beyond the obvious - Carl Hiaasen got rich doing it, so why not Tim Dorsey? Slap together some zany characters and "hilarious", convoluted situations and what do you get? If you have talent you get comic gold, the sort of thing some people refer to as a "romp". If you are Tim Dorsey, you get a mess of seemingly unrelated events strung together over an unendurable number of pages, called by some people "garbage".
Serge Storm is the reason for this book's existence. He's a..psychopath? Sociopath? Serial Killer? ...who studies Florida history, murders for money and drags his skitchy friend Coleman behind him, snuffling drugs of every sort, drinking incessantly and trying to track a big score, half a million in insurance money. They are not funny, but reprehensible. They are not quirky, but downright offensive to the sensibilities of anyone over the age of say, well, zero.
The situations are over-the-top, even in a subgenre known for its far, far reaches into the absurd. The writing is sometimes so minimalist that the only thing missing are the bullet points running down the side of the page. I wholeheartedly do not recommend this book.

Entertaining and useful.......2001-11-08
A very nice collection of essays about various aspects of the life of the Victorian woman. I read this book for the first time as a graduate student researching aspects of Victorian sexuality, but read it again recently just for my own interest and found that it kept me fascinated. Also includes a very nice (albeit dated) bibliography by S. Barbara Kanner. Essays include:
"The Victorian Governess: Status Incongruence in Family and Society" M. Jeanne Peterson
"From Dame to Woman: W.S. Gilbert and Theatrical Transvestism" Jane W. Stedman
"Victorian Women and Menstruation" Elaine and English Showalter
"Marriage, Redundancy or Sin: The Painter's View of Women in the First Twenty-Five Years of Victoria's Reign" Helene E. Roberts
"A Study of Victorian Prostitution and Venereal Disease" E.M. Sigsworth and T.J. Wyke
"Working Class Women in Britain, 1890-1914" Peter N. Stearns
"The Debate over Women: Ruskin vs. Mill" Kate Millet
"Stereotypes of Femininity in a Theory of Sexual Evolution" Jill Conway
"Innocent Femina Sensualis in Unconscious Conflict" Peter T. Cominos
Writers and Monsters.......2000-05-17
This book is an excellent source for anyone researching the Victorian era and the issues surrounding women writers. The book provides both statistical and interpretive information for any serious student or literary fan.
Book Description
In contrast to most texts designed to introduce students to contemporary moral problems, this book is designed to present students with a method for how to think for themselves in a morally reasoned fashion. Honing students' critical thinking skills through continuous reference to a step-by-step method of moral analysis, this text covers not only many timely moral problems associated with life and death, social justice, and sex and reproduction, but many major ethical theories as well, such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and egoism. Building on the methodology and critical successes of his THINKING CRITICALLY ABOUT PHILOSOPHICAL PROBLEMS (Wadsworth 2002), Wall's new book provides students with clear and readily accessible models of rigorous moral analysis to guide their own deliberations about the most crucial moral issues of our time.
Book Description
Adopting a critical thinking methodology in which critical thinking tools are introduced and applied to medical ethics reading, this book explains the dialogue which is formed by the readings in each chapter and clarifies how the various thinkers are responding to one another in a common discussion. The books' unified approach offers a critical thinking pedagogy, which philosophically and logically pulls the many readings and philosophies together. The book examines an introduction to moral theory and critical thinking tools, while readings address the following issues: surrogacy contracts; abortion; ethical issues at the end of life; genetics and morality; ethics and HIV/AIDS; the relationship between medical professionals and patients; research on human and non-human subjects; allocation of medical resources and justice issues in health care systems. For individuals interested in medical ethics and philosophy.
Book Description
This supplement supports the development of critical thinking skills necessary to success in the introductory psychology course. The chapter sequence mirrors the organization of the typical introductory psychology course. In the first chapter, the author identifies seven characteristics of critical thinkers, and in the following chapters he dissects a challenging issue in the discipline and models critical thinking for the reader. Each chapter concludes with an analysis of the process, exercises for the reader, and extensive references.
Customer Reviews:
This is not the text book. This is a supplement to the text........2007-02-07
When purchasing this book it implied it was the actually text. There was no picture of the book, so I ordered it. This is a supplement to the text titled CRAM 101. It has blank areas for notes and definitions. It is not even a true study guide.
excellent textbook.......2002-02-11
I felt I had to answer the 2 irresponsible reviews above. This is an excellent introduction to critical thinking. It is thoughtful clear, and enjoyable to read. Each chapter contains puzzle-like, challenging exercises which reinforce the lessons. It is easy to improve your thinking skills by reading this book and working through the exercises.

An Appalling Lack of Critical Thinking.......2001-09-19
The book is easy to read and moderately informative but useless as a textbook for a course in critical thinking. About a third of it is just incomprehensible because of the "folksy" writing style. Ex: Ch 4 opens, "Reasoning is often taken to be the hallmark of the human species. Colloquially, reasoning tells us 'what follows what.'" That's the best definition of reasoning you're going to get in that chapter! Errors of reasoning are rampant throughout the book. The first chapter opens with a barrage of statistics to show that CT is not adequately taught.Ex: You will live into your '70's so what do you need to know to be prosperous (as if all knowledge for the entire future needs to be acquired today.) The book is riddled with wrong definitions and erroneous information. The chapter on hypothesis testing is especially egregious in that regard. There are few references later than 1991 (in the 3d edition). Finally, the chapters do not speak to each other: There are completely unrelated chapters on memory, logic, and probability theory, for example. The book might be useful in a course on rhetoric or communications, but critical thinking it is not. The chapter on analysis of arguments is the one good one, but it doesn't redeem this... paperback.
Comprehensive yet readable.......2000-07-13
I have collected a library of books on critical thinking, but this is by far the best. It is comprehensive and intellectually honest, yet very readable. I bought it, started looking through it, and wound up reading it completely in that one sitting. It's rare to find such a scholarly book so compelling!

Excellent and concise book for all.......2002-05-31
With little over a hundred pages and primarily written as a text for a course on skepticism, this book is deceiving on both these counts.
It is excellently organized, succinctly packed, and is brilliantly written. And most refreshing thing of all - it is neither pedantic nor overbearing. The logic and arguments are presented in layman terms and hence can be an easy introduction to people with no prior skeptical background. People with prior knowledge of the subject would definitely appreciate the insight, strength of arguments, and classification of the wide subject matter presented in a condensed form.
After I read the chapter on how word definitions (mis-)lead people into seemingly unresolvable arguments, I remembered some arguments I witnessed over the years which could have been avoided and peacefully resolved if only the participants knew that their 'language' is not precise and accurate. Hence the author shows skepticism works for us in day to day affairs equally as with strange happennings and claims.
By presenting very simple logic, the author provides insight and solves such seemingly complex problems as the Russell's paradox, without the reader even knowing the "heaviness" of the subject. He effectively uses the same simple arguments to debunk nasty pseudo-scientific claims that are draining our precious energies and resources.
In short this book is a must read for all of us.
How to analyze the paranormal.......1999-12-01
This book was used in my Psychology of the Paranormal class. It is a useful tool to help people learn to think critically about thier own thoughts and the thoughts of others. Included within it are basic fallacies, common arguments for the paranormal and against it, and other useful psychological information concerning how we make sense of the world. A must read for anyone serious about examining paranormal phenomena of any kind.
