Outstanding, easy-to-read business improvement book.......1999-10-22
I really enjoyed this book and the real life business improvement pointers it discusses. A very common sense approach to tackling business challenges. I would recommend it to any manager, specifically related to manufacturing. Anyone except my competitors.

This volume collects articles from the Symposium series of the National Tax Journal from 1993 to 1998. Leading economists and other scholars discuss and debate current tax policy issues in nontechnical language and illustrate how the principles of tax analysis can be applied to real-world issues. Among the topics addressed are the practical feasibility of consumption tax alternatives to the current income tax, the rationale and implications of devolution of fiscal responsibilities to state and local governments, the effect of tax policy on economic growth, and the value of local tax incentives designed to attract and retain business.

Book Description
In several liver diseases, the underlying cause cannot always be eliminated, i.e. the progression of liver disease cannot be prevented. This is particularly true for non-responders to the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV). It is relevant for more than 40% of patients with HCV genotype 1 and up to 20% of patients with genotype 2 or 3. Several approaches are now underway to prevent or ameliorate mechanisms of disease progression. In Asia, and particularly in Japan, Glycyrrhizine-SNMC has been widely used for this purpose. At present, SNMC is under clinical evaluation in Europe.
This book, the proceedings of the Falk Workshop on 'Prevention of Progression in Chronic Liver Disease - An Update on SNMC (Stronger Neo-Minophagen C)' (Part IV of the XII Falk Liver Week, in honour of Hans Popper's 100th birthday) held in Freiburg, Germany, on 22 October 2003, is devoted to the understanding of basic mechanisms of fibrogenesis, the state of the art of non-invasive markers of disease progression that may substitute liver biopsy in the future, and of other predictive parameters indicating disease progression, in particular the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. All these problems are particularly relevant for chronic hepatitis C. A better characterization of so-called non-responders for the treatments available is crucial for the development of new strategies preventing or postponing disease progression. Such strategies should influence fibrogenesis and, thus, cirrhosis formation as well as the development of life threatening complications of liver cirrhosis, including hepatocellular carcinoma. In this volume, the available information on SNMC as an approach to prevent progression of chronic liver disease is discussed by several internationally renowned authors who report on the mechanisms of liver fibrogenesis and fibrolysis, on non-invasive markers of disease progression, and on hepatocellular carcinoma as one of the major complications of liver cirrhosis nowadays. Finally, experts from Japan report on their knowledge and experience concerning the drug SNMC/Glycyrrhizine in the prevention of cirrhosis and HCC, and first study results from Europe are presented.

Book Description
This book is based on the modern conceptual understanding of crystal fields. It clarifies several issues that have historically produced confusion in this area, particularly the effects of covalency and ligand polarization on the energy spectra of magnetic ions. This comprehensive volume provides readers with clear instructions and a set of computer programs for the phenomenological analysis of energy spectra of magnetic ions in solids. Readers are shown how to employ a hierarchy of parametrized models to extract as much information as possible from observed lanthanide and actinide spectra. All computer programs included in the volume are freely available on the Internet. It will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers working in the development of opto-electronic systems and magnetic materials.
Book Description
Meg Langslow was actually looking forward to renovating the old Victorian mansion she and her boyfriend Michael bought. But she wasn't thrilled by the lifetime of junk accumulated by the house's eccentric previous owner, Edwina Sprocket. The easiest solution: hold the end-all and be-all of gigantic yard sales. But when the event attracts the late Miss Sprocket's money-hungry heirs, the over-enthusiastic supporters of some endangered barn owls, and customers willing to go to any lengths to uncover a hidden treasure, Meg suspects things have gotten a little out of hand... Then an antiques dealer is found stuffed in a trunk with his head bashed in-and the yard sale turns into a day's-long media circus. Even worse, the suspect arrested for the crime is the person Michael needs to secure academic tenure. Now, Meg is juggling an ever-growing list of suspects. And she's going to have to outthink and outwit one clever murderer who lives by "everything must go..."

Always enjoyable.......2007-09-04
This series is a fun read. I'm sure most readers can identify characters in their own families. Great as a series but can stand alone.
Hilarious cozy mystery.......2007-07-09
As a general rule, I am skeptical of reviews that say I will laugh out loud while reading the book. However, this book does not disappoint! This has become my new favorite cozy series.
For me, the actual murder and solving of the mystery took a backseat to Meg's family's antics. What a riot those people are! They will keep you chuckling throughout the book as they set up their yard sale wares, "help" Meg (translation: annoy), and just generally act in their very quirky but loveable way. The yard sale itself - which is more of a carnival complete with bands, food, etc. - will keep you entertained. Donna Andrews truly has a gift for humor.
I highly recommend this book as a good chuckle and as a quick, easy-to-read cozy mystery.
Great laugh out loud book plus a declutter motivator!.......2007-07-02
Owls Well that Ends Well is the sixth in Donna Andrews' series about blacksmith Meg and her drama teacher / actor boyfriend Michael. Where previous installments found M & M in a variety of oddball locations, making me wonder if it was the locations that held such appeal, in this book they are nestled into their new, if rundown, home and are "simply" having a yard sale. That Donna could turn such a typical suburban event into a fascinating story is proof to me that she is simply a master storyteller and that she could turn ANY situation into a brilliant mystery romp.
Nothing goes smoothly for Meg and her clan, of course. The family, as we've seen in previous books, is very eccentric and each person has their own idea about how to do things. Meg is a little on the march-forward side of things, to the point of dumping icewater on the heads of unwanted callers and envisioning the piles of clutter around her as an evil invading army. Michael, intent on convincing his long-time girlfriend to finally marry him, is the model of patience and help throughout it all. Things are only barely lurching along when a corpse is found in the center of the yard sale area.
One of Michael's good friends - and the man responsible for hopefully getting him tenure at his college - is the prime suspect, and Meg eagerly wants to get him cleared. I found this reason far more believable than previous reasons for Meg to get herself involved in the solving of the murder. However, I found some of the situations vastly unbelievable, considering the number of murders Meg has been intimately involved with over the past few years. She was upset about being near a dead body?? Meg, who has been touching at least one a year? I understand the desire to make this book "readable" by someone who just picks it up without having read the rest of the series - but really, that's not going to happen. There is SO much back story to every character here, and so many in-jokes, that people who try to start here are going to be confused and perhaps disappointed. The readers who have gone step by step through the previous five books are going to find it exceedingly odd that Murder Expert Meg has suddenly forgotten about all of those other murders and is treating this like her very first one.
I loved the interplay of characters, the unique personalities that the various people had, and how the minor stories wove themselves in and out of the plot. Characters were nicely complex. Michael was on one hand very supportive and almost angelic - but on the other hand his frustrations and temper snapped through at times. His dramatic skills were made good use of. Spike had his role to play, as did Rob, mom, dad and other key characters. If there's any minor complaint, there were a number of "silly" puns near the end that didn't seem to fit.
I really enjoyed the book a lot, going through it, as usual, on one straight pass in an evening. These stories really do hook you and don't let you go until you finish them. And, in fact, where the other books left me feeling happy - their laugh out loud situations can really cheer up a day - this book both did that and got me motivated to go around and declutter things! Donate things to charity! Sell them on eBay! So if a book can make you happy AND help you get your home organized, I say get two copies, and give one to a friend :)
Highly recommended!
Read them all -- this is the best one yet.......2006-12-10
I've read all of the Meg Lanslow Mysteries and after reading We'll Always Have Parrots, I was excitedly looking forward to reading Owls Well That Ends Well. I wasn't disappointed. This book has even more of what made her previous books so fun to read - more goofy characters, more ridiculous situations, and more twists and turns, all still within my suspension of disbelief meter.
If you liked her other books, you'll love this one.
Donna Andrews does it again.......2006-08-19
The Meg Langslow series is a wonderful thing. The cast of wacky characters in this book is just as great as always. A must read for murder mystery fans with a funny bone!!!!
Book Description
This book is the first definitive reference on the history of the Canadian Airborne forces. It has been painstakingly compiled from war diaries, unit histories, unit and museum files, as well as a myriad of books, professional journals and magazines. It provides a detailed and comprehensive account of the Canadian airborne legacy with lead-in pieces that both encapsulate and explain the Canadian airborne experience and the enigmatic Airborne Mystique.
The material has been organized as a listing, by month and year, of key decisions pertaining to the airborne forces and their activities, events, exercises, operations and organizations. As well as a factual history it contains an exclusive bibliography on airborne subjects, an invaluable resource for researchers. In addition, the book includes the only complete summary of international airborne operations from 1929 to 2001 in existence.

Philip Mandsel's book is a five-hundred-year history of Constantinople (now Istanbul) which attempts to convey the rich history of this one-time capital city and describe the defining characteristics which point toward its potential to return to global grandeur. The book is sizable in scope and weight: there's a wealth of details and illustrations. Mandsel addresses the development of Constantinople into an Islamic city, covering the five-century dynasty of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire in 1453, converting the city from the capital of Eastern Orthodox Christianity to the home of sultans, eunuchs, and janizaries. They created a city of mosques and minarets that served as the Ottoman capital until the end of World War I. Mandsel's attention falls particularly on the palaces and the political history of the capital, as well as the great architectural works which still constitute the city's skyline. This is a highly readable history of the great city on the Bosporus, marked by keen perceptions of art and palace life.
Customer Reviews:
The City of the World's Desire.......2007-07-07
In his book Mr. Mansel brings to light why all the great powers in the history wanted to control Constantinople and its hinterland. Their motives were not only politic but economic as well. All wanted Constantinople to be an open city.
By giving quotes from contemporary diplomatic corresspondances, accounts of travel writers and history books writen back then; he explains the power strugle behind the scenes.
Sultans ruled the city and the Ottoman empire but, who influenced them? Answer is in the book, Mothers, Eunuchs, dragomans, Pashas, Ambassadors. It clearly shows that when Mehmed conquered the city he adopted the Roman system. In fact he was the continuation of the Roman Empire.
After Pagan Rome (I) and Christian Rome (II), he established the third, Muslim, Rome. As money does not have any religion, the inhabitants of the city wanted to continue their trade and increase their wealthy under the new administration. Cons.ple continued to be the magnet for the rest of the world whether they were firends or foes.
The palace entriques, just like in Rome, continued until last day of the Ottoman empire. (and also it is still continuing today)to control the power and wealth.
The book also gives a good example of the modernization and democratization efforts in the Ottoman empire trying to catch up with Europe and the forces opposing it, which is still continuing today, too.
Mr. Mansel's knowledge on other dynasties of Europe and Midddle East adds a lot into the book. I would have enjoyed more extensive comparison between the other rulers of their times and ottoman sultans, which would help readers to evaluate; the Sultans, the Ottoman Empire, the city and its population, fairly as most of the time Ottoman Empire and its system is critisized on today's value system.
Super powers again wanted to control Istanbul and its hinterland by enforcing their value system. Each super power prefers that Istanbul should better be run by weak administrations rather than another rival super power fully controls it. And today, the history repeats itself.
Constantinople will be Constantinople (multi cultural, multi ethnic, indulgent, intriquing, passionate, full of conflicting interests) until the end of time as it is the city that everyone desires.
Good Topical History.......2007-01-17
Philip Mansel's Constantinople is an excellent resource on the history of Istanbul during the time of the Ottoman Empire when it was known as Constantinople. It provides excellent insight into the Ottoman Empire in general. The book does not continue in chronological order, but is arranged topically, which serves to give the reader snapshots into the city rather than a grasp of the sequence of events. If you are looking for a chronological history of the Ottoman Empire, Caroline Fink's 'Osman's Dream' is a better place to begin.
More glorification of Slavery.......2006-12-04
This book is a history of the greatness of constantinople between 1453 and 1924, the history of the Ottoman occupation of the city. In this it is an interesting account, the account of rulers, of the wealthy, of the cosmopolitan nature of the city and of the architecture and arts.
But there is a serious drawback. Imagine a history of Richmond Virginia that described slavery thus "for a wealthy man he could purchase female slaves at will", a discription that does not go on to tell the slaves story or condemn the practice of slavery. This book excuses slavery as 'exotic' and romantic, glorifying the harem. But why not some condemnation for a slave market that is not so romantic, but rather a brutal practice of selling humans for sexual pleasure? This is therefore the typical orientalist-moral relativist account of the 'east' where slavery is 'romantic'.
In addition one wonders why this book is titled 'constaninople' since the period covered is the one where it was named Istanbul. Why begin history in 1453, the city had 1500 years of history before that. This book is more a propoganda piece for Islam and the colonialistic Ottomans than it is a honest portrayel. The history of Constaninople ended in 1453, when its churches were plundered and its people sold into slavery. A strange book, but typical of the genre.
Seth J. frantzman
wonderful.......2005-07-31
The best history book I have read in years. elegantly written, very readable and a poignant elegy for a vanished multiracial empire and city. i had not imagined before that there was much to regret about the Ottoman Empire but I was very mistaken. written with a relish for the macabre and unwholesomeaspects of a mysterious and wicked city which has now been subsumed by a modern and much less interesting istanbul.
Very smooth reading!.......2003-02-11
Delectable in fact, one of my favorites for good solid Ottoman history. A really good place to start if your interested. This book helps Constantinople take shape so that you will understand why she is still the world's desire.

Book Description
While the literature on American wilderness preservation is well-known to environmental historians, the Canadian experience has only begun to be documented. This book is the first full-length history of wilderness protection in Ontario. Drawing on government records, the private files of environmentalists and their organizations, and personal interviews, it examines the changing idea of wilderness and the politics of preservation from 1927 to 1973. The book traces the evolution of lobbying tactics, and the internal debates that galvanized Ontario's modern wilderness preservation movement. Through their pressure group activity, preservationists became a catalyst for the emergence of environmental politics in Ontario.
