Book Description
This is a paperback edition of a major contribution to the field, first published in hard covers in 1977. The book outlines a general theory of rational behaviour consisting of individual decision theory, ethics, and game theory as its main branches. Decision theory deals with a rational pursuit of individual utility; ethics with a rational pursuit of the common interests of society; and game theory with an interaction of two or more rational individuals, each pursuing his own interests in a rational manner.

The Self-Improvement Handbook.......2002-01-26
"Cashing In is a must read for everyone in your organization if you are committed to delivering world class service, with empowered employees who will always do the right thing to make your customers happy and to keep your business growing in a cost effective manner. Recently, we provided our employees with their own copy of Cashing In and this masterful book has become their service and self improvement handbook. John's book will make a positive difference in your company immediately!"
Brilliant common sense.......2000-04-05
This is the kind of book you would wish EVERY member of your workforce read. Tschohl links in the mind of the reader his world class expertise in customer service with his deep understanding of human nature. The result: employees learn how -by doing their best in the job- they can achieve a highest degree of satisfaction and success.
This is not another "self improvement" book, but a powerful tool for your company to improve the performance of all your people, the satisfaction of your customers and speed up the growth of your business.
The Proof Is In The Pudding!.......1999-12-07
I have personally used many of the techniques and concepts in my own life to "cash in" from John Tschohl's book. This is an excellent book to give to your employees because it works! Laws of nature work the same way as laws of success. At times the laws are deceptively simple but if the laws are not followed failure will result. Use this book and follow the concepts daily and you too can cash in on life's rewards.
An outstanding book on personal achievement.......1999-10-20
This is certainly a great book. John Tschohl teaches you how to achieve personal success caring about the customers. The main message is: it IS possible to succeed really trying hard in your job. I have bought this book for ALL my employees and people responded in a fantastic way: new attitudes, great morale, enthusiasm. They work with more energy and customers feel and love the difference. My employees now understand the link between their success and the success of the organization. There's here a comment from a reader ranking the book badly. But this guy for sure didn't understand what he read. This book is a winner. I recommend it strongly to any business executive seeking for improving the performance of the people and building customer loyalty. And also recommend to any person who either works for a corporation or is self employed. Cashing In will teach you how to build their own success. PS: John Tschohl other book, Achieving Excellence Through Customer Service (Best-Sellers Publishing) is probably the BEST book I have ever read in customer service strategy. I recommend you buy it too.
Can you say "common sense".......1999-05-15
This author was obviously out to make a quick dollar. Not much thought was put into this piece. It's unrealistic common sense on how one "should" act in the workplace.

Book Description
Photonic Crystals: The Road from Theory to Practice explores the theoretical road leading to the practical application of photonic band gaps. These new optimal devices are based on symmetry and resonance and the benefits and limitations of hybrid "two dimensional" slab systems in three dimensions. The book also explains that they also signify a return to the ideal of an omnidirectional band gap in a structure inspired by and emulating the simplicity of two dimensions. Finally, the book takes a look at computational methods to solve the mathematical problems that underlie all undertakings in this field. Photonic Crystals: The Road from Theory to Practice should rapidly bring the optical professional and engineer up to speed on this intersection of electromagnetism and solid-state physics. It will also provide an excellent addition to any graduate course in optics.
Customer Reviews:
useless, buy Joannopoulos' other book.......2005-11-05
This book is very costly and not worth either the money or the time you spend reading it. It's a collection of journal articles that you can get free if your institution subscribes to common physics and optics journals. They have added a badly written introduction and conclusion, and there is absolutely no coherent presentation as it jumps from topic to topic in different papers.
(Note: I have used the Kids review option because I didnt want to take the trouble of finding my password, signing in ... I am a researcher in the area of nonlinear photonics.)
Extremely Poor Value.......2003-10-22
Taken by itself, it isn't a bad book BUT most (80%) of the content is just *reprinted journal articles* which, if you work/study anywhere with decent journal access, you can get for FREE. Just look up Joannopoulos' major papers. The other 20% of the book is covered in more detail in his other book, Photonic Crystals:Molding the Flow of Light.
And this is not even mentioning the absolutely outrageous price that the publisher wants for this miniscule tract. It looks like it was just photocopied (poorly - you can even see where the toner didn't distribute properly) and bound. Some of the graphs and illustrations were meant to be shown in color in the journals and are, of course, illegible in black and white.
I recommend buying the other book.
Excellent.......2003-07-05
This book will be very useful for future researcher in the emerging field oh photonic crystal.
At last, Photonic Crystals book for beginner in the field........2003-02-05
Recently I had been working on simulation of light propagation in photonic crystals, and found that many materials (text, papers, etc) are difficult for beginners, especially non-physics majors like myself (I'm a computer science people).
[Note that this book itself does not state that it is for beginners, but the tone of the text itself said it all.]
This book fills in the gap nicely. It has a good introduction topics and good explanation, i.e., english rather than mathematical formula, for otherwise rather difficult things. A lot of things, including computational model, are introduced in the text (even I think the computational model section is a little bit shallow). Note that this book might missed out some recent advancement like nonlinear waveguide. However, taking into account that this book is rather for beginners of this rapidly-changing field, it is fine with me.
Cons::
This book has some cons, however. First, it is a little bit pricy. Considering that it is only 154 pages long and pricing at 125$, it is almost $1/page. And at this price, you would expect it to be in full colors with good quality paper (like Joannopoulos' previous "Photonic Crystals: Molding the Flow of Light" book). However, a copy I recieved has rather bad quality paper and only in monochrome. And for this reason, I had lowered the rate of this otherwise a 5-stars book.

A Refreshing Twist on "Chick Lit".......2007-04-16
The Givenchy Code is a witty, fun, and suspenseful twist on your average run-of-the-mill Chick Lit novel. While it can at times be cheesy and predictable, it still manages to be intriguing and page-turning. The Givenchy Code will have you laughing, sitting on the edge of your seat, and scrutinizing clues along with the loveable protagonist, Melanie Prescott. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading the other two in the series!
Grade: A-
Mystery-Romance Book.......2006-07-08
Melanie Lynn Prescott is your normal everyday garden veriaty grad student living in NYC. She loves shopping with her roomate and is looking for love after dumping her boyfriend.
Then while out walking dogs she runs into her ex and also a messager who gives her a message. The ex takes the message and later she goes to her exs appartment to read the message. The message says "Play or Die" and gives her clues to follow. She is scared and spends the night with her ex. The next day the ex is dead and she and Mathew Striker who is hired as her protector must outrun Lynex who is out to kill her. They must unscramble codes connected to an internet game called Play.Survive.Win. Will Mel and Striker find and figure out what the clues mean in time or will Lynex get them? Find out in The Givench Code.
Pleasant fluff, couldn't read another however.......2006-06-18
Don't ask me why I ended up reading this, but I like to think of myself as "open-minded," so I did. It's an amusing way to spend the time. No surprises as to the plot, which could have been recycled from old MacGuyver episodes, and the mysterious clues weren't all that mysterious, but the writing is fun and airy and the two lead characters -- basically the only ones in the book -- are fun cariactures. I'm going to call this book "mysterical" (mystery + hysterical) and say that if you like inoffensive, pleasant, non-challenging reading it's great.
I couldn't put it down.......2006-05-08
A delicious page-turner -- I couldn't put it down and read it all in one day. This story had all the right elements -- fun dialogue, a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, a yummy hero, high fashion, great shoes, and an original plot. Loved it!!
Interesting, fast-paced premise.......2006-04-22
Grad student Melanie Prescott has a knack for math problems, codes and ciphers. When a coded message is delivered to her by a mysterious stranger, she's intrigued.
And when her ex boyfriend uses the message to see her again, she goes along with his extortion. After all, he did give her a pair of Givenchy pumps, right? It's not like she's going to take him back or anything, right? Well, okay, Melanie does have sex with him but, as far as she's concerned, it's definitely a no-strings thing. Especially when she discovers the ex with his brains blown out and the mysterious stranger accosts her with scary threats.
In a panic she runs, heading to her apartment where ex-Marine Matthew Stryker is waiting for her. Stryker explains that they're players in the PlaySurviveWin Internet role-playing game, except this game is real. Melanie is the target, Stryker is the protector and the mysterious guy is the assassin.
Set in Manhattan, this story moved quickly, lots of action. I read it in one sitting. Fun and original. I didn't experience one ~What?!~ moment, everything made sense. Not much sex but the sexual tension was good.

Book Description
The murder of a prominent French personality in the fragrance industry jumpstarts this exhilarating code-cracking ride all over Paris and deep into the heart of a religious conspiracy that centers around the real identity of a religious icon. In a spine-tingling blend of electrifying adventure, scholarly intrigue and unforgettable, unpredictable moments, The Givenchy Code gleefully, perversely parodies scenes and pays homage to that brilliantly written
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious Homage.......2005-09-22
I picked up E.R. Escober's book THE GIVENCHY CODE AN HOMAGE AND A PARODY on the recommendation of a friend, who saw a copy of Dan Brown's THE DA VINCI CODE in a store window, and who told me that he had recently laughed himself silly with this cheeky little parody.
All of Dan Brown's affectations are affectionately skewered here. In The DA VINCI CODE, we learned a lot of history that was sometimes not so subtly disguised as fiction. Same thing occurs in GIVENCHY. Chapter 55 alone, the history of sparkling wine, is worth the price of this cunning book.
It should be a best seller, because Escober does for Dan Brown what Frederick Crews did for WINNIE THE POOH, i.e., totally tears him apart in a loving manner and providing the grateful reader with hours of thankful chuckles. The riddles that Fr. Theo and Puca must solve are mind-numbingly funny, as well as being sort of difficult. For example, What do Superman, Moses, and the Cabbage Patch Kids all have in common?
Instead of THE LAST SUPPER, Escober lowers the boom this time on the famous MONA LISA. She is smiling and you will be too. Enjoy this excellent send up and remember: "The Holy Grail is not a cup!"
Fun Book / Excellent Read.......2005-04-03
I stumbled upon this book while searching for the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. The description gave me a chuckle so I added it to the shopping cart thinking I'd read it after the Da Vinci Code.
This book was great. It really does an excellent send-up of the Da Vinci Code and its theories. I giggled repeatedly at each scene's subtle parody of the other book. And the ending - whoah! I won't give it away; you have to read it. Definitely not predictable and quite thought-provoking!
Now it wasn't "Mad TV" type parody, mind you (which is a good thing). It's higher brow than that with its many nuanced jibes.
This book would be enjoyed most by a more sophisticated reader looking for adult humor.
A clever homage...a hysterical parody!.......2005-02-03
It was fated to happen. Since the publishing of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code a year ago and ensuing enormous success, numerous books have now hit the bookshelves in hopes of rebutting this puzzling novel's theory, or of riding and cashing in on the popularity of the book, or simply providing a much needed stress break from the book's shocking revelation of the Holy Grail's real identity. You snicker but because of the novel's brilliant mixing of some fact with a great deal of fiction, there are millions out there who have taken the book as fact and have become profoundly troubled by it.
Leading the host of anti-Da Vinci Code books are books published primarily by evangelical and Catholic publishers such as: Cracking Da Vinci Code: You've Read the Fiction Now Read The Facts; Decoding Da Vinci; and The Da Vinci Hoax: The Truth About Jesus, Christianity, Mary Magdalene and The Da Vinci Code. All are currently selling very well at amazon.com and bookstores around the world.
Then there's the new wave of books that are parodying Dan Brown's best selling novel. There are The Dali Code: A Parody by humorist Cathy Crimmins and the suitably and hilariously titled The Givenchy Code:An Homage and A Parody by author ER Escober.
Escober's website, www.thegivenchycode.com, reveals that The Givenchy Code is "my humble attempt at paying homage to Mr. Dan Brown's page-turning novel, poking benign fun at the ostensibly complex fragrance industry and ultimately, conjecturing an out-of-this-world theory of a story that the Holy Grail was indeed not a cup but a...???" ER Escober wisely leaves out whatever shocking revelation he has in store for the readers of his parody.
Indeed, what is it? Even more important, will book buyers care? With the success of "Da Vinci" which has led to millions of readers snapping up other works dealing with "The Code", ER Escober's book might just find itself on the bestseller list, alongside that original Dan Brown novel.
