I found this book to be most helpful in preparation for a large term paper. While the paper was for an International Economics class Veseth taught, I found many of the ideas presented in the book to be slightly different than those presented in the text we were using for the term paper. The differing viewpoints really made me think about what I was going to argue, and I feel pushed me to come with new ideas. I would recommend this book to any student of economics.

It is worth every dollar........1999-01-15

I used this book to study for my international economics exam and to write a term paper. It is truly great. Knowing the author personally and his extended knowledge of the international economics, I would recommend to anyone, even with a slim background in economics (although some would be helpful).

Excellent.......2001-11-01

This book is very nice. Not only does it present the theory and give problems, the problems are solved in the appendix (for the most part) and many references are cited, allowing the reader to review work elsewhere. If you are interested in quantum fields and gauge theory, I would suggest reading and working out of this book.

This is a very enjoyable mild horror adventure that once finished will have you looking for everything else Christopher Moore has ever published. This is his first novel and too be honest there are probably a few too many characters constantly popping up between chapters for very short scenes, that at times you do have to think who was this character again. This is the only reason I dropped my rating a star but we have to remember this was Moore's first book and more importantly Practical Demonkeeping is still a very interesting and unique good book!

The small Californian town of Pine Cove has had an interesting history but nothing can prepare the surreal eccentric townsfolk for two visitors that are about to separately arrive who are older than the town itself. One named Catch is accompanied by another named Travis who is also older than he looks by about 70 years. The looks of Catch aren't too important as the only time the townfolk are likely to see this ancient reptilian demon is when he is in eating mode and then they don't want to as they are likely to be on the menu. His reluctant travel companion has a plan to rid himself of his murderous demon and the answer lies within Pine Cove. Meanwhile a frustrated policeman is trying to find a man named Breeze to save his career but only Catch and Travis know where he is. A deadbeat husband is trying to get taken back, a hippie feminist wishes for an earth spirit to help her with her goals, a frustrated with life store owner is about to meet a stranger who's a Djinn with a score to settle since the days of King Solomon and will make his life a lot more exciting. Throw in a heap of other eccentric townsfolk and you've got one hell of a read!

If you like the surreal eccentric character novels also check out the authors Bill Fitzhugh (Pest Control's a great place to start), Carl Hiassen (Stormy Weather's as good as any other), Dave Barry (Tricky Business) and Max Barry (Syrup).

Twisted in all the right ways!.......2007-09-12

This was a great book. Very sick and twisted, but in all the right ways. It made me laugh out loud at parts, and I absolutely couldn't help loving the demon Catch (despite the fact that he eats people on a regular basis!). Very witty, totally enjoyable. This is the first Moore book I have read, and I will defintely be reading more!

This was the second Moore book that I've read (A Dirty Job: A Novel being the first). While overall I enjoyed this book, I felt that it suffered from not having a clear main character that the story could revolve around. This was compounded by developing characters that were "removed" in short order. By far the funniest parts of the book are those with the demon and ultimately there were not enough of those to go around.

Okay, now I was not splitting my sides laughing at these books of his but the concept, the outrageous titles and his very good writing made me buy all of them. I will say they made me smile the whole time I was reading them, they touched my heart and I can't wait for the next one. I did order all of them and I have not been disappointed in any of them. He makes you believe these things exist in his world. Has funny characters. I like them.

Solid Read.......2007-05-07

Stephanson was a professor of mine at Columbia University. His book is a concise tracing of the notion of Manifest Destiny from the inception of the British colonies in North America through the Cold War. He is a fabulous and engaging writer. In a post-9/11 world, Stephanson's book rings a crucial chord that has long been a part of the foundations of the United States, but oft remains to be neglected and forgotten.

Manifest destiny is an all too often ignored subject in American history, if for any other reason than it rather vividly illustraits the paradoxes of American history.

Where this book's major aim is not expressedly moralizing (although this is not avoided), but rather an attempt to paint a history of the development of the concept and show how it has been carried through to the very near past, it does so in a way which is compact and concise. In short, only those very well versed in American political and philosophical thought will be able to understand the signifigance of even 50% of the subjects discussed. The total volume of information in this rather slim book is difficult to rate in terms of relavance without a deep understanding of even the most minute areas of the United State's past.

Does this mean the book is unreadable to a beginner to American history? Not at all. However without any guide regarding the signifigance of each passage and quote only the initiated will be able to determin whether the author is making an important statement, or simply adding on extra for effect.

The small size and extreemly condensed subject matter will be just the thing for neonates of American history looking to become well versed in the subject. The amount of sources and concepts drawn upon are many and fairly diverse.

Aside from the above strengths/weaknesses, there is one unfortunate oversight which is all too common in writing or discussion of the subject. That is, a broader grasp of the European origins of the fledgling "divine doctrine". The view of America as the "great experiment of man, provided by God for the faithful" is well known, but no attention was spent looking in to the already present philosophy of the "White Man's Burden", which had already blazed across South and East Asia for over a centry preceeding the full scale colonization of the New World. More attention to these origins would have been appreciated.

All in all, this will be an excelent book to start on unraveling the concept of manifest destiny as well as the overall framework of American history, if for any other reason than it will provide practice in determining the relavance and import of sources. For those sources which are almost beyond question, even to the average reader, this will serve more as an elementary introduction to an all-too-often ignored segment of the history of the United States.

Interesting but not a good bedtime story.......2000-01-18

The interesting point of the book is demonstrating how religious righteousness has manifested itself into the very core of American politics and self identity since its inception. An eye opener to see how racist our country has always been. However, the author's arrogance and pomposity makes for dense difficult reading and tends to distract from the message.

I'll keep this short. The book is a terrific overview of what has been happening in our little world since 1945. There is so much here that you will never learn through our media and through other historical text books. Especially given the current world circumstances, it is imperative that Americans learn about histories of other people and how American foreign policy has done some wonderful, and also horrendous, things to other people in the last 50 years. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK ON AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY FOREVER.

Global history of Cold War era.......2001-11-28

This is essentially a history of the Cold War period, i.e. 1945 to the early 1990s. Even so, it does not focus on the U.S. and the Soviet Union, nor great power politics as such. Instead, Vadney broadens the focus and gives due consideration to the Third World which, as he notes, accounts for the vast majority of the world's population (since India and China can be placed in this category). The general emphasis is on major political events and trends, with only some attention given to economic and social factors. Nonetheless, this is still a highly useful book, as Vadney provides essential background and details on a number of events and regions not normally covered in standard "world history" or "Western civ" texts. The book's organization and uncluttered writing style also make it an outstanding reference work for this period.

An inspiring guide to a healthier, more inclusive science.......2000-11-12

Although there are many excellent books and articles covering particular aspects of feminism and science, finding a comprehensive text is difficult. I was delighted to discover _Lifting the Veil_ a few years ago, and have been using it ever since as a text in a class I teach, "Feminist Perspectives in Science." It is written with great sensitivity, insight, clarity, and conviction. Shepherd advocates for greater gender balance in the ways science is conceived, practiced, and taught. Specifically she imagines a more inclusive science--inclusive not only of women and people of color, but also inclusive of certain qualities customarily associated with women and customarily undervalued in Western science. Each chapter features one of these qualities: feeling, receptivity, multiplicity, nurturing, cooperation, intuition, relatedness, and social responsibility. Her writing style is engaging and enjoyable to read. Endnotes, bibliography, and commentary within her text are exceptionally illuminating guides to the literature, and inspire and facilitate further reading. Especially important to me as a teacher is that my students like the book, and read it--even the most skeptical males.

Shepherd exposes male bias in science not in an accusatory way but simply by proposing a positive and appealing alternative-- "more creative, more productive, more relevant, and more humane"--noticing how a more "feminine," inclusive science is emerging already in a thousand different ways, and unveiling the places where it has all along been present but unseen. Her book seems to take into account, as if by design, most of the complaints about science voiced by my students. They find in this book a new face of science to which they can relate.

OUTSTANDING INSIGHT INTO SCIENCE.......2000-09-01

This is a wonderful book that details the difference between how men and women approach science. It demonstrates those charactoristics that women can uniquely bring to science. As a mathematician I was impressed with Dr. Shepherd's rigorous scholarship and enjoyed her interviews with living women scientists. I'm a father of a teenage girl who plans a career in science, and I appreciate the author's efforts to highlight the special ways that women contribute to the scientific effort.

Revolutionary Scientific Book.......2000-08-31

Lifting the Veil shows the feminine perspective in science, instead of the normal male view. This is extremely illuminating, and makes the reader think of new things -- an alternate reality for many male viewers. There is an important message here: when we do not include the feminine perspective, we miss seeing part of reality. The author mixes philosophy, science, and feminism in a very readable way, filled with anecdotes and conversations with both women scientists and men who are not afraid of their feminine sides.

Linda Shepherd's book is a must for those seeking to understand why science has such a hard, "macho" edge and why it seems so divorced from wanting to look at the impact on society and the environment. Dr. Shepherd explores what it is that science and "scientists" lack--a compassionate face.

Falling in Love with the Beauty of Science.......2000-04-08

This book describes the changing trends in today's world of R&D as it strives to evolve itself. This book does not strive to bring science down to the reader, instead it seeks to illustrate the beauty and complexity of science and asks the reader to come up. Shepard illustrates her points with allusions to Jungianism and her own personal experiences as a scientist and as a woman (and proves they need not be separated). Shepard examines the effects on science being funded and conducted almost exclusively by men and the changes brought about by the inclusion of women into it at (almost) all levels. She discusses why many scientists are finding their way away from Baconian "rip from nature's breast what you will" philosophy to one more holistic, nurturing and sustaining. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to fall in love with science or understand why scientists act the way they do. Finally, Shepard shows us why the true scientist need not be the cold, unfeeling demagogue society tells us they should be. I would advocate strongly any young woman looking to go into the science read this. Not only would it give her a sense of her past, but a good guide for the present and possible future.
