Book Description
China is emerging as an agribusiness giant. Domestic reforms and the readmission of China to GATT will integrate rapidly the massive Chinese agribusiness sector into international markets. China has already become a dominant player in world wool markets. Developments in relation to wool, therefore, are a harbinger of what is likely to happen in regard to many other agribusiness commodities. This book, published in collaboration with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), provides a detailed analysis of how the Chinese are reforming their wool marketing system. Wool is grown mainly by people of minority nationalities who are among the poorest in China and who live in the environmentally fragile pastoral region. As a result, wool markets have an impact on social, environmental and developmental issues as well as being of major relevance to China's strategic and trade interests. This book, therefore, is concerned with many of the most difficult issues confronting Chinese society and its interaction with the world community. By examining these aspects of contemporary China through the case of wool, the authors provide first hand insights into the detailed impact of the economic reform process on particular social groups and institutions. Most of the earlier literature on economic reforms in China has concentrated on general economic reforms and sector-wide or industry-wide effects. This comprehensive work will be of interest to economists, policy makers and others concerned with understanding the Chinese economy as well as to competitors and customers of China's wool industry. In a broader sense, anyone seeking first-hand information about the rapid changes transforming agribusiness in China will find this volume of great interest.

Book Description
This book gives an overall picture of the general state of the world's aquatic resources - rivers, lakes, wetlands and oceans - and of the atmospheric changes taking place in the troposphere and the stratosphere. Both ozone depletion in the stratosphere, leading to a greater incidence of the harmful ultraviolet-B radiation on the Earth's surface, and the adverse impact of increasing ground-level ozone are described in the light of recent research. The summarized scientific findings and views help to identify and implement sound preventive, corrective and remedial measures to cope with today's environmental problems.

Description:
To assess the impact of livestock grazing on the emission of greenhouse gases from grazed wetlands, we examined biomass growth of plants, CO"2 and CH"4 fluxes under grazing and non-grazing conditions on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau wetland. After the grazing treatment for a period of about 3months, net ecosystem CO"2 uptake and aboveground biomass were significantly smaller, but ecosystem CH"4 emissions were remarkably greater, under grazing conditions than under non-grazing conditions. Examination of the gas-transport system showed that the increased CH"4 emissions resulted from mainly the increase of conductance in the gas-transport system of the grazed plants. The sum of global warming potential, which was estimated from the measured CO"2 and CH"4 fluxes, was 5.6- to 11.3-fold higher under grazing conditions than under non-grazing conditions. The results suggest that livestock grazing may increase the global warming potential of the alpine wetlands.
Book Description
This is the first book to really make sense of the dizzying array of information that has emerged in recent decades about earthquakes. Susan Hough, a research seismologist in one of North America's most active earthquake zones and an expert at communicating this complex science to the public, separates fact from fiction. She fills in many of the blanks that remained after plate tectonics theory, in the 1960s, first gave us a rough idea of just what earthquakes are about. How do earthquakes start? How do they stop? Do earthquakes occur at regular intervals on faults? If not, why not? Are earthquakes predictable? How hard will the ground shake following an earthquake of a given magnitude? How does one quantify future seismic hazard?
As Hough recounts in brisk, jargon-free prose, improvements in earthquake recording capability in the 1960s and 1970s set the stage for a period of rapid development in earthquake science. Although some formidable enigmas have remained, much has been learned on critical issues such as earthquake prediction, seismic hazard assessment, and ground motion prediction. This book addresses those issues.
Because earthquake science is so new, it has rarely been presented outside of technical journals that are all but opaque to nonspecialists. Earthshaking Science changes all this. It tackles the issues at the forefront of modern seismology in a way most readers can understand. In it, an expert conveys not only the facts, but the passion and excitement associated with research at the frontiers of this fascinating field. Hough proves, beyond a doubt, that this passion and excitement is more accessible than one might think.
Customer Reviews:
Earthshaking science by Susan Hough.......2007-02-23
The book is very well organized, clear, easy to read.
It gives the lastest development in the earthquake seismology without getting involved in imperical equations. I recomend this book for everybody intersted in earth science.

Susan Rocks!.......2006-08-19
Absolutely a marvelous book. Ms. Hough has written a book that deals well with a very complex subject in a way a non-expert can readily fathom. A wonderful package - types of faults, their locations, their history, the key people in the development of the scientific advances, the hazard for particular faults and fault types, the kinds of risks those hazards raise (given the population and building densities near the faults). This is one of those A+ science books for the general pubic with an interest in science. I only come across about one or two every five years. toxon 8/18/2006
A survey of the geology and geologic exploration.......2004-11-09
The sum of knowledge and mysteries surrounding earthquakes are provided in Susan Hough's Earthshaking Science, a scholarly but highly accessible survey of the geology and geologic exploration in the science of seismology. Susan Hough is a research seismologist in one of North America's most active earthquake zones: her title succeeds in aptly communicating the science of earthquake research to a lay audience, injecting a healthy dose of lively history for those with no prior background in the subject.
I agree, except............2003-01-11
I agree with all of the above reviews of this book, Earthshaking Science: What We Know, and Don't Know, About Earthquakes by Susan Elizabeth Hough. It is an excellent summary of the many recent advances in seismology and is pertinent to all parts of the U.S. (even the world). However, I must strongly disagree that this book is "jargon-free." The book is loaded with the jargon of seismology (not as much as a seismology textbook). This is okay because in order to be scientifically literate, the public (especially the media!) must learn to understand some of the vocabulary of science. There are very few mathematical formulas in this book, but when they are used they are used effectively.
This book will be a fun read for people that have some scientific (especially earth sciences) background. Those with little or no science background will find this a challenging, but rewarding, read. Anyone living in earthquake-prone regions of the world must read this book.
Earthshaking Science.......2002-11-27
Earthshaking Science: What We Know (and Don't Know) about Earthquakes written by Susan Elizabeth Hough os a book that tackles the issues at the forefront of modern seismology.
Although earthquarkes have been around for eons, the science of measuring the ground motion has been really around for a few decades. Most of the information about earthquakes has been excellerated by the improvements in earthquake recording capability. This book has a straight forward approach in describing what happens durning and the causal effects of what is entailed by a tectonic event.
This book on seismology addresses earthquake prediction, seismic hazard assessment along with ground motion, magnitude and how earthquakes start. I found this book to be very readable and understandable. Since the science of seismology is so new, not much information is available outside the technical journals, but now in this book the layperson can understand the dynamics of this science.
The book has only seven chapters, but each of them when finished will impart a knowledge of seismology to the reader that you could only piecemeal before. If you want to understand why earthquakes happen where they do, then this is your book.
This book is jargon-free and the author communicates very well to the reader about a complex science in terms that are easily understood. I recommend reading this book if you want to know why the earth shakes, raddles and rolls.

Book Description
This subject is currently one of the most exciting areas of research in condensed-matter physics. Direct investigation of fundamental dynamical processes in semiconductors, exploiting the remarkable recent development of pulses with pulse widths less than 5fs, has led to new insights into fundamental physics and ultra-high-speed electronic and opto-electronic devices. This new edition presents the recent developments: femtosecond dynamics demonstrating quantum kinetics and higher-order correlations, measurement of the amplitude and phase of ultrafast nonlinear and linear signals, femtosecond coherent emission dynamics, and ultrafast dynamics of microcavities and lower-dimensional structures such as quantum wires and dots.
Customer Reviews:
Stupid.......2006-10-12
This is just plain Boring with a capital B and Stupid with a capital S. If this is the author's debut novel I hate to see what her next book is like. Yes it's her first novel so I really should giver her a break but this book has nothing to recomend. James is a duke and Richard is after the title and in order to do this he needs to kill James and make it look like a accident. James is sweet but thats about it. She wrote no depth to her characters at all. I found him not the least bit interesting.
And then we have Sarah the oh so boring American who has come to look for her cousin who just happens to be James's friend. Don't you love coincidences. Blah! Sarah was found in a compromising position with James very early on in the book and they then are required to get married but headstrong annoying Sarah says no. And so we go on with her living at James estate I assume to make the story more interesting but it fails to do even that.
And the villian Richard - he was not even a villian, no suspense, no excitment just a couple of hundred pages thrown together to make a stupid book with less than average characters that you care nothing about.
Romantic Adventure.......2006-07-15
The Duke's cousin is crazy and plots his cousin demise. James the Duke of Alvord needs to marry and produce an hire -soon. When he finds Sarah Hamilton from American in his bed he thinks all his problems are solved - or not. Great first novel - off to find more of this author.
Great fun in the beginning............2006-07-01
I have to say, Ms. MacKenzie has a voice. She's very entertaining and fun to read, and if she hadn't had a "ravishment" scene of the heroine by the villain, and then such a quick recovery, I would have given 6 stars if I could. I loved this book. it had so much going for it. I rarely laugh at Regencies. I was laughing at this one. And then...that incident. And such a quick recovery? the next
thing I knew she was over it? I was annoyed, disappointed and a little bit tiffed. I had to wait a long time before I rated this. It was such a 5. And then it was such a 1. In the end, I'm going with 3. I'll check out her next one. Maybe.
Save your money, read a library copy.......2006-04-22
First book in the Naked series.
American Sarah Hamilton promises her dying father to go to her uncle, the Earl of Westbrooke, after her father dies. She goes to England, unchaperoned, to find her uncle, unaware he died a few months previously.
Sarah ends up in bed with James Runyon, Duke of Alvord. They're both naked and compromised. And Sarah's cousin Robbie, the new earl, mistakenly put them there.
James is a war hero, in the market for a wife and has an unjustified rake reputation. He instantly likes Sarah and decides to marry her. But his nasty cousin is trying to kill him to take the title. Now Sarah's in danger also.
This story was ridiculous, from the unchaperoned part to the sleeping naked part (she should have slept in her dirty clothes, for crying out loud!) to the meddlesome aunt and her friend to James - a duke! - not being able to stop his cousin - not a duke! - just to name a few of the ridiculous parts.
But the most unbelievable part was the secret James reveals to Sarah just before they're going to make love. That was a ~WHAT?!?!!!~ moment. Since this was Ms. MacKenzie's first book, I'll cut her a little slack; otherwise it would get 1 star. I felt I should read this because we chose THE NAKED MARQUIS for our reading group book for April. I sincerely hope it's better than this one.
A pretty good read with some steam!.......2006-03-26
I liked this book.
The hero, a 28 year old duke whose evil cousin Richard is trying to eliminate him, rather obviously, I thought, needs to get married and procreate rather quickly.
Enter the heroine, an american, whose father having died, requested that she return to his homeland England and ask his brother to further look after her.
From one romp to the next, the story is often incongruent, but James and Sarah feel real. I love the fact that they come across as very honest with each other as well. Sarah has her moments of doubt, but usually being the good american girl that she is, she voices them and resolves them.
The murder attempts on Jame's life could be cut back, I think I counted 6. The reason given was that the Duke wasn't taken seriously when he tried to convince everyone that Richard was trying to kill him. I found it hard to believe that no one would believe a Duke if he told them anything, especially in the regency period.
The writing was solid and correct for the time period, something that I have found is increasingly not the case lately in many so-called regency romances, which made the book also more belivable for me.
The only downfall is that Duke, at 28, was supposedly still a virgin. I can't imagine it. In any way, shape or form. But still, it didn't detract too much from the story and I managed to finish it in a day anyway...
