Amusing and Charming .......2007-02-17

This book is not attempting to be the next War and Peace, in fact it's not even attempting to be a historical romance novel, all it's attempting is to give you a light hearted read, and it completely succeeds!
I picked this book up, amused by the premise, and found it to be very enjoyable. No it's not breaking any new roads into literature and no it's not really that exact on dates and such, but it's a book about VAMPIRES how historically accurate can it really be? I loved it! I couldn't wait to keep reading it. I found the jokes amusing and the situations full of comic relief, and it just fueled my passion for tall dark vampires.

Reluctant to read.......2006-12-07

This book reminded me of the Cheshire cat, it is laughing so hard at its own jokes that it disappears without a trace. Yes, this book is so taken up with its own exquisite humour that it is not funny, not even enjoyable.
The reluctant miss of the title, is Ethel Jane Van Helsing, who belongs to a certain family of vampire hunters.
Alas, the poor girl is not following in the family footsteps well, in a word - she's hopeless. Given a new chance to prove herself in nabbling the Earl of Wolverton, she lands herself in fresh pickles and prat falls. The tale follows a steady course, poking fun at both Regency and vampire tales.
It just doesn't work, despite hitting the occasional humorous mark. This is not simply due to the woeful historical inaccuracies with which it bristles.
No, a parody must actually be genuinely funny and not just telling you it's funny by hitting the reader over the head with gags and giggles.

It depends what you're in the mood for..........2006-07-14

If you want your historical romance books to be completely on target in the history department- I would not suggest this book to you. Some historical references are inaccurately made and made simply to add humor. If that's something that bothers you- stay away from the book. However, if you're more into the humor aspect and a play on popular culture, give the book a shot. For instance, one of the chapters is named "Waking Neil Devine" (a play on the movie Waking Ned Devine), which I found to be rather humorous. This isn't the type of book you would read to stimulate your mind, just a quick beach read. Personally, I enjoyed the novel for the paranormal aspects and was amused by the popular culture aspects. However, some popular culture references were unnecessary and, even I (one who doesn't pay to much attention to historical accuracy), think the author should have been a tad more selective in her choices. On the other hand, the heroine in the novel, after struggling with her own identity- as opposed to simply being a "Van Helsing" (sorry if I spelled that wrong)- finds her own inner strength.
In the end, if it's what you're looking for, this book is a fun, airy read.

I love a book that makes me laugh. if you want a fun read this is it. and it gets quite romantic at the end, when he realizes how much he does love her.

goes for farce, falls short of good genre fiction.......2006-05-15

I read vampire novels (you can see my reviews of dozens of them). I read Regency romances (and have reviewed a few). So you'd think that something that purports to be about a Regency-ish vampire hunter would be right up my alley, right? Well, it would be, if it were well done. But I'm picky about "well-done." I insist on at least the basics of characterization and plot, and a bit of historical accuracy in my historical romances, and dialogue that's witty. This book fails on all those counts.

It falls most seriously short on historical accuracy and period atmosphere. Some of that is deliberate; the author is trying so hard to get in sly puns and allusions to 20th-21st century pop culture that she deliberately stretches the way the characters talk. But other anachronisms are accidental and annoying - references to going to Plan B if Plan A doesn't work; references to someone's ego (I notice that one in many historical romances; people seem to space over the fact that we didn't start using that terminology until Freud laid it out at the turn of the 20th century...) Incidentally, the book is allegedly set in 1828, which is technically post-Regency, but not yet Victorian. There's a reference to Dr. Jekyll, even though Stevenson didn't write "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" until 1885. And so on.

Some of the plot devices were so predictable as to be passe - our heroine is carrying a flask of brandy and a vial of holy water in the same pocket; of COURSE she's going to accidentally throw the brandy instead of the holy water. (Let's never mind how our heroine has a liquor flask in the pocket of a light muslin gown; let's never mind that gowns of the period did not have pockets as we know them...)

And many of the allusions to pop culture were not worth making - the version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," for example, was (a) stupid; (b) not very well done as to imitating meter and rhyme, and (c) totally pointless with regard to the plot.

There are also the usual typos, grammatical errors, and word misusages that one finds in all too many mass market paperbacks these days; publishers don't seem to employ copy editors any longer.

To give the book its due, it's not totally unreadable. For a few pages, the allusions to pop culture are fun; if they came at about 1 every 10 pages, instead of being smushed together in run-on fashion, it would be a very funny style. I suspect that someone who isn't a dedicated Regency reader would be far less annoyed by the anachronisms than I am, and might therefore enjoy the book more. And if your only previous exposure to vampire fiction has been recent work that's more or less romance - Betsy the Vampire Queen, for instance - and has not included the serious authors such as Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, then you probably wouldn't be as bothered by the haphazard treatment of vampire powers and weaknesses, or the mixing of vampire and other supernatural cultures, as I am. So, if all you're looking for is a light read, not holding out for an actual good Regency or intense vampire experience, then this might be acceptable.

The stories and photos are both excellent and engrossing, although the essays are needlessly truncated for the modern one minute attention span. This could have benefited greatly from a bit more detail, a bit more fleshing out of the characters and circumstances. Something of a Cliff Notes for recent explorations.

What I and two other people I spoke with found utterly offensive was the forward by Robert Sullivan. This guy literally says there were no "adventurers" before 1900. He discounts everyone from Columbus to Lewis & Clark to Leif Erickson, and his reasoning is wholly specious, as if modern explorers did not have patrons or ulterior motives. Do yourself a favor and skip his naive and offensive ramblings and get right to the lusty tales of the ambitious souls who have bravely expanded our horizons.

This book should never have been called the "Greatest Adventures of All Time" since it's really only the greatest adventures of the last century, but in the end that is sufficient. It was an amazing Century and an amazing time to be alive.

Illustrated with contemporary photographs throughout, most have been seen before and much of what is written and illustrated is to be found elswhere. What you have here, though, is the whole lot - end to end. If this doesn't fill you with awe - nothing will!

Extremely Board Specific.......2004-06-16

I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

Sleep better before the exam..........2003-08-30

Using this review source helped me sleep better before the exam, because I felt ready for the "case-based" style of the boards that everyone kept telling me about. This is a great series, but I don't think it should be used as a stand alone review source. Case-based coverage of topics means that some topics are missed/not covered. However, the topics covered by this volume were very high yield for my exam. Definitely worth the money!

Behavioral made bearable.......2003-07-22

Not a big fan of behavioral science, but this book makes it bearable by focusing on what you'll be tested on and helping you distinguish similar conditions from each other. Good biostatistics section also included. Great information and great figures to help you understand the info. Strongly recommend - the rest of the series is also outstanding.

I'm not much for writing reviews, but this book and series helped me so much I felt obligated to let people know about it. I'm very interested in psychiatry, which is why I applied to medical school, thus I wanted to write a review on this particular volume of the series. This book is composed of 50 case presentations with questions at the end of each case, followed by the explanations/answers to the questions.

The cases and explanations are superb, concise and get right to the "meat and potatoes" of every subject. After taking step 1, I can recommend this format without hesitation. I also thought the BRS Behavioral Science review book was very good.
