I was extremely impressed with this book. I am beginning a new job soon and this book will come in handy, especially for the person who had been out of school for a while and needs a refresher. It is easy reading with very good graphs and examples to follow. I am confident this book can help anyone out from the recent graduate to the high ranking executive.

Wholly Unoriginal Work by A False Prophet.......2007-07-11
In the old testament when a prophet made a prediction that didn't come true they were exposed as a false prophet, taken out and stoned to death. I'm certainly not recommending it- just putting some perspective on our extreme tolerance for people that are consistently WRONG in their predictions. Only God knows what's going to happen, and it's GOD not government, or even we ourselves that provides for us. Burkett and a whole host of "Christian financial advisors" put WAAAAYYYYY too much stock in "planning and preparation". I don't discount it, but they do it and recommend it to the point of pride and idolitary. Do what YOU are supposed to do, and let God do the rest. Quit WORRYING (as worry is a sin) and trying to predict the future and get on with your life!!!
A Future Warning.......2006-09-19
Those some of his predictions (such as 2000) about an economic earthquake hasn't happened yet nor are we that close even with the largest deficit in history. Although it's hard to predict such things...But Larry Burkett makes valid warnings about huge goverment and public deficits and it's impact on the economic that normally leads to hyper-inflation. My impression from the data contained in the book and history thereafter, the government deficit will not have a negative impact such as hyper-inflation till most of the baby boomers are retired. I wish Larry would have updated this topic! The book is still worth buying as it has valuable information, it's super cheap...

The revised edition of The Coming Economic Earthquake has some interesting information. For a somewhat different view you should check out "The Christian Financial Crisis" by James L. Paris.
Economics solid, Timing off.......1999-07-08
While Mr. Burkett's timing for the economic collapse is off the principals remain solid. Our economy will collapse and his book fortells how and why, while still offering hope. Much thought to chew on.

Local governments are hard-pressed to balance their budgets in the 1990s. Part of any budget-balancing effort is accurate forecasting. In this new work, Howard Frank introduces time-tested forecasting techniques from the private sector and military in a local forecasting environment. In a lucid, user-friendly treatment, Frank shows how simple and complex methods can be put to use in the contemporary local government setting. Through examples--many of them from his own research--the author delineates the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and non-quantitative forecasting methods. Frank also shows how these techniques can be used to monitor changes in public programs--an increasingly important part of contemporary budget execution. Frank does not assume an extensive mathematical or statistical background on the part of the reader--indeed, a forecast neophyte will have no difficulty understanding the text. Questions at the end of each chapter focus the reader on the major concepts and provide insights on practical applications within the urban setting. A cornerstone of the work is that local forecasters must be intelligent experimenters with the new tools--there is no "canned advice" that applies to all cities and forecast situations. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis focuses on means of forecasting Saudi Arabian military expenditures and the effect of such expenditures on the United States. Saudi Arabia is one of the largest purchasers of American arms and will continue to be for many years. Saudi Arabia has experienced several recent changes in economic and government policy. Using exponential smoothing techniques and linear regression, we isolated several trends in Saudi Arabian military expenditures. Using two linear regression models, military expenditures were then forecast with excellent results. The first model considered the assumption that Gulf War spending would continue. This model uses Saudi Arabian Gross Domestic Product lagged by three years and the current year force size as explanatory variables. The second model considers the assumption of post-war reductions and is based only on the Saudi Arabian Gross Domestic Product lagged by three years. Using decision analysis, it was possible to consider the implications of these forecasts for the United States. The decision analysis model considered several relevant contemporary issues, including succession of the Saudi Arabian King, the Foreign Military Sales policy of the United States, associated uncertainties, and risk.

Although this test will soon be out of commission, as of next year, i found the text very helpful in getting me oriented to what i need to be studying and what kinds of questions are likely to be asked. Its always good to be able to review with actual questions. But it also had little information about other the test in general

badly phrased text.......2007-02-08
The author explains how tunable external cavity diode lasers work, and why they are important. There are many practical uses, from communications to spectroscopy. Plus, having solid state lasers means that these are usually smaller than gas lasers giving the equivalent output. Hence the attraction of diode lasers. While the tunable aspect lets these be used in far more ways than a laser permanently fixed at one frequency.
The book gives good background in the general theory of heterostructure lasers. Like the different types of manufacturing processes, including MOCVD and MBE. While the theoretical designing of the band structure to optimise performance is also discussed. Some quantum mechanics is needed here to follow the narrative.
Unfortunately, the book suffers from being poorly edited. The author's native language appears not to be English. Many sentences are badly phrased. The meanings are clear, at least, but it's awkward to read. The book appears to have had a spell checker run through it. But nothing further. Spell checking usually only works on single words, and not on overall sentence construction. Some combination of the author and the editor dropped the ball.

Not for me.......2007-08-10
Yeah, uh..., no. I didn't like 95% of this book. I have now read all of David Sedaris books and I can unequivocally say this is the book I liked least. I liked it even less than I liked "Naked" - or should I say I disliked it even more than I disliked "Naked".
This is Sedaris' first book and IMO it's obvious. There are twelve "stories" - allegedly fiction - and four essays, supposedly non-fiction. As far as I know, all subsequent Sedaris books are essay collections. I can see why. The difference between the fiction and the essays is night and day. I found the fiction to be just *too* disturbing. Seriously - really disturbing. Happily, it seems Sedaris' *real* life - albeit dysfunctional - is no where near as scary and twisted as his imagination.
My favorite entry in this book is the essay "Diary of a Smoker" - I thought it was very funny. In real life Sedaris is an avowed anti-non-smoker, he has said that's one of the reasons he left New York City for France where he now lives. It also includes his classic "Santaland Diaries", which is phenomenal - but you can read that in "Holidays On Ice" and not have to endure the rest of this book's unpleasantness.
In my opinion, this book is *leagues* away from my favorite "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and I would recommend it, warily, only to Sedaris fans.

I read so many reviews that mentioned the SANTA LAND DIARIES that I absolutely had to read this book...the SLD while entertaining and fun was a bit of a disapointment. Most likely because the way some people talked about it I was expecting it to be the best thing DS had ever written...it isn't. I loved NAKED and Running with Scissors (ha just kidding I know that isn't DS) and ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY and I think if you haven't read anything of his definetly go to one of these tried and trues instead. David is at his best when he writes non-fiction (or at least some sort of version of non-fiction) stay away from his fiction for the most part it disapoints when compared with his other stuff.
Barrel Fever-Sedaris.......2006-11-06
I really enjoy reading Sedaris. I love how he can make you cringe & laugh on the same page. My favorite by far, "Naked". He's got a wonderful style of keeping you interested, you cannot read fast enough! If you enjoy his work, you will also like Augusten Burroughs.

Barrel Fever
It's probably best to read Barrel Fever AFTER you have read all of Sedaris' other works. As other 3-star reviewers note, Sedaris' more recent collections are far funnier and better crafted and stylized. If you pick up Barrel Fever and have not read Me Talk Pretty One Day, you may get the false impression that Sedaris is a so-so writer whose is variably funny and witty. I prefer to look at Barrel Fever as an early photograph of what Sedaris would eventually fully develop and polish.
Many of the stories/essays in this collection are too short to give more than a cursory glance at their subjects. When you finally get to the last work, SantaLand Diaries, you feel like Sedaris has finally reached you as a reader, and you (hopefully) will forgive the previous missteps and awkward experiments in style. Barrel Fever has plenty of funny moments, but it is simply not nearly as mature as Sedaris' later books.

Pedestrian, insipid, and banal are all descriptives with more life than what is encountered in this collection of bleh.
It's unfortunate that the author applied his wonderful writing style to expertly strip all sense of humanity and intelligence from his characters, deciding instead that every represention and encounter be woven from identical nothingness.
After reading Barrel Fever I was left with a nagging feeling that I had been witness to little more than the kidnap of many perfectly innocent words for the ransom of a contracted book release.

This is the best of the best, as far as I'm concerned. "You Can't Kill the Rooster" will crack up anyone raised in or currently living in the South - we all have known guys like David's younger brother Paul, a.k.a. The Rooster.
Sensational Sedaris..........2007-05-15
David Sedaris is one funny, talented man. It's one thing to read his work, but I heartily recommend you listen to him on audio cassette or CD...his delivery is nothing short of sensational. The only problem is, once you listen to one book on CD/tape, you are compelled to get them all...which I have, much to the delight of amazon.com!
Not quite as funny as "Naked" or "Me Talk Pretty One Day".......2006-12-28
David Sedaris is one of my favorite authors. This book is not quite as funny as some of his others, but certainly worth the read.
An Exception to the Rule.......2005-07-21
As a general rule, I avoid audio books. The actual texts are cheaper, and I find that I get a fuller experience of the book when I read it myself.
David Sedaris is the exception to that rule.
Don't get me wrong; I love reading his work. I've read everything I can by him and enjoyed every mintue. The exception is that as much as I enjoy reading his work, listening to him read it is all that much better.
Sedaris' voice is perfect; soft and dry like his humor. And since most of these stories and essays are autobiographical in nature, his reading takes on a kind of life that you can't get by reading it, it becomes more like a friend telling an anecdote at a party, it becomes personal.
Anybody can be slapstick. Anyone can put on a goofy voice and make you laugh by being silly. David Sedaris gives you more to laugh about, and is all the better for it. When you find yourself laughing out loud at his soft spoken, earnest phrases, you'll laugh some more just because. It's a wonderful experience.
skip the audio version.......2004-11-03
Here's the scoop:
The stories and essays in the book are hilarious, but the audio version is not an exact duplication of the paper copy - some stories are missing, and others have been added. That's only part of the problem.
David Sedaris narrates, and he has a very monotone voice. If you sit there and listen carefully, you'll find the stories quite funny, but if you (like me) do mindless tasks while listening, you'll find yourself tuning out the narration without any effort. Then you'll have to go back and listen over again, only to tune out the next part. Amy Sedaris has small voice parts in the stories, and her voice is much better at grabbing attention. However, her parts are very small. I wish someone with a more enticing voice was chosen to narrate, because then this audiobook would be a gem.
