glaring errors.......2006-01-14

Previous reviewers have pointed out some of the obvious errors for a book set in 1981 - they really take you out of the story (which is not that strong to begin with). Both the 'Godfather' and 'Star Wars' trilogies are mentioned as well as "Purple Rain" and REM - for these not to be caught somewhere along the line suggests sloppy work

The abridged 'book on tape' edition was TOO abridged.......2005-09-14

Having read other Tanenbaum books, I have come to expect a detail-rich standard cop story - the details are what distinguishes Tanenbaum's work from lesser efforts.

I listened to this as a book on tape and I find it to be well read and a decent story but absent all of the detail that makes a Tanenbaum's book a nice read. I felt like the new guy on the block the entire time because very few of the relationships of the principal good guys were explained.

I suppose that's what one should expect when you compress a 400+ page book into a 3 hour taped reading.

Disappointing effort by author.......2001-10-28

Having previously read and enjoyed IRRESISTIBLE IMPULSE by
Robert K. Tanenbaum, I looked forward to listening to RECKLESS
ENDEARMENT . . . I further wanted to catch-up on what was
happening with two characters i had "met" in the previous book,
Butch Barp and Marlene Ciampi . . . they discover themselves
working on two sides of the same case when several homicides
rock downtown manhattan . . . but was I ever disappointed! . . . it
is an excessively convoluted thriller that starts well, then gets bogged
down with too many characters and subplots . . . I also didn't find it
very believable . . . I'll take a "pass" on other books by
Tannenbaum; i.e., unless somebody tells me that I
just caught the author on a rare bad day/effort.

Now You Have To Pay Attention.......2001-08-03

You've really got to keep your wits about you when you're reading this story. There are about 5 different threads of storylines that are gradually woven together tighter and tighter until something just has to give. And when it does, the effects are devastating.

It's New York City, 1981 and the racial tensions between the Arabs and the Jews are simmering. A plot is being hatched and put into place by a small Arab group to start a holy war by bombing the Jewish part of town. Separate to this, yet delicately connected are a couple of Mexican brothers who have been arrested and charged with murdering an undercover officer during a drug bust. This is where Deputy D.A. Butch Karp comes into the picture, he's interested in getting a conviction, you see. Marlene Ciampi, Butch's wife is a private detective, specialising in protecting abused women and is also tenuously drawn into the picture after an Arab girl flees the family home. Now just add a murder or two, stir and let the fun begin.

Wild Ride.......2001-05-11

by Robert Tanenbaum - second in the series, but this doesn't interfere with NYC thriller that takes you into the DAs office, drug deals in Harlem, Political intrigue in palestine, violent gangs in Mexico, and how they come together for an thrilling, however unlikely, story.

I wanted to like this book but honestly. The stay-at-home mothers in this book are (1) so sadly without selves that they compensate by being over-involved in their children's lives, causing their offspring to become abnormal and neurotic, (2) too dumb and/or too self-involved to be bothered to read newspapers or keep up on current events, (3) only SAHMs b/c they've lost their jobs or never had significant careers, or (4) all of the above.

And don't even get me started on the "black" speech of Park-Ave-dwelling Angie, who now they she's been fired from her powerful job is now free to talk ghetto and grow dreads. Please.

Apparently the only way to succeed as a mother and a woman is to be tall, blonde and beautiful (like the protagonist) and be offered a highly lucrative partnership out of the blue and thus escape the misery of staying at home with the kids.

Lukewarm.......2007-09-28

While I liked the subject matter in general, and some of it was dead-on, some parts of the plot were a little unlikely and fell a little flat for me. A little unrealistic for most of the SAHMs I know (swearing, drinking, minor drug usage). If you like this genre it's worth a read, but it's definitely not going to be a classic.

When I decided to stay at home with my son and was trying to adjust to the STAHM lifestyle from full time working mom, this book was a great read.

Interesting Read.......2007-07-18

First - it's called fiction for a reason. Some of the main character's (Jennifer) feelings I could relate to but the main character definitely has more issues than most SAHM's. Great and easy book to read poolside - just keep in mind if she were 'real' she would be diagnosed with clinical depression. Don't dog Jennifer; you may meet someone as depressed as her some day.

Second, I could do without the language.

To Be Tasted.......2007-04-24

On the cover of this book is a picture of a melting orange popsicle, which seems to accurately resemble what my brain feels like as a Stay-At-Home-Mom some days. Frozen, melting, sticky. This is exactly the kind of cranial (and emotional!) atmosphere Scheibe is trying to capture in her debut novel What Do You Do All Day?

Touted as "an American answer to Alison Pearson's I Don't Know How She Does It" (from the book jacket...and I can't attest to it's veracity, since I haven't read the referenced book!), Scheibe simultaneously won me over with her wit and annoyed me with her characters and their "other half" lives. It took some time for me to care about people named Portia and Health and Thom and people who lived in NYC, sent their kids to private school, worked at Christie's. How's that for reverse snobbery? But I hung on, because the book is about a woman named - simply - Jennifer, and I could at least relate to her.

Jennifer is a SAHM, having left her career as an antiques specialist at Christie's in order to stay at home with Georgia (5) and Max (1). Although the particulars of her life are unlike mine - she's trying to write a book on Hannibal, she has a famous child-actor star for an ex - the emotional struggles she has as she examines every decision she's ever made as a wife and mother did resonate with me. From a passage in the book: "I fear I'm unconsciously making deliberate choices that run me off the friendship road. My love for Georgia and Max is frequently so all-consuming that I simply don't have anything left to give anyone else...My long days of laundry folding and bottle washing give me a kind of peace that is hard to explain, even to myself. And yet I fear the day when the children move away and I am left to mend all the fences I've let fall."

This book certainly qualifies as chick-lit. And it has WAY too much language in it for me to recommend to truly discriminating audiences. But it is well-written, funny in parts, and offers many poignant and truthful passages about the difficulties and delights of mothering.
