Book Description
Berlin, Christmas, the dead of night: 16-year-old Alissa and her best friend, Evelin, are making their annual secret pilgrimage to the grave of Alissa's father when Alissa falls through thick snow to land in an underground crypt. There she finds a child's casket...with a strange black plant growing up through its lid. Opening the coffin, she severs the dark growth from its roots--and discovers they are embedded in the heart of the dead child. From that moment forward, Alissa's life descends into nightmarish turmoil.
Customer Reviews:
The mysterious plant..........2006-06-28
I have to admit that I picked this book up because of the cover, which is pretty cool looking.
It follows the characters of Alissa and her friend Evelyn, whose lives are changed one night after visiting a graveyard and encountering a mysterious purple plant that grows out of the heart of a corpse. Unusually compelled, Alissa takes some of the plant home with her which seems to be the cause of a number of strange events, including the mysterious appearance of strangers, an ex-boyfriend who has an unreasonable obsession with Alissa, and other odd happenings.
Told in a very beautiful and almost dreamlike voice, the story, although highly unbelievable if seriously considered, is extremely addicting and an enjoyable read.
Despite those good points there were several instances when I was uncomfortable; ex.: the drinking, certain situations...
And, the ending seemed abrupt and completely far-fetched. The author obviously attempted to explain everything away, but only in the most general sense, so that the last few chapters are bound to leave readers in confusion and shaking their heads, kind of like me.
If you're looking for a nice writing style and a quick read, this is fine, but if you can't stand when all loose ends are not tied up, look somewhere else.
Strangely intense and beautiful, but almost too odd.......2006-02-09
This is an odd but strangely compelling book. If you think about the plot too hard, things fall apart and make no sense; you must, MUST, kick in your suspension of disbelief and just allow yourself to be carried along by the story. Don't question things too much, just let it be. Because the ride is worth it.
Every Christmas, sixteen-year-old Alissa makes a pilgrimage to the local cemetery with her friend Evelin to visit the grave of her father. They go at midnight every year, but this year, things are interrupted when Alissa accidentally falls into a crypt. While there, she stumbles across the casket of a small boy who has a strange plant growing right out of his chest. She can't explain it, but she is compelled to take the plant and later winds up eating it, still in the dead of night.
She is visited by two strange characters (Elia and Aren) looking for something, which she deduces (correctly) to be the plant. They are amazed that Alissa can see them and disappear quickly without offering her any help, leaving Alissa alone and confused by the strange things that start to happen around her.
Best friend Evelin does her best to help, even fending off Alissa's ex-boyfriend-turned-stalker Simon. But Alissa seems to just slip farther and farther away from the real world. She can see people (like Aren and Elia) that turn into ravens and seem to comfort the dead and dying. She can bring back the dead, even though she doesn't at first realize that this is what her new "power" is.
Everything comes to a head when she finally tracks the raven-people to one of their hideouts and demands help. They aren't forthcoming, but Alissa does learn from the meeting and when things immediately fall apart thereafter due to a violent visit from the maddened Simon, things really take an unexpected (and somewhat dissatisfying - at least for the reader) turn.
As I mentioned in the beginning, this is a book with a haunting beauty, but one that you have to silence any naysayers in your head to truly appreciate. Recommended for readers aged 12 and up, especially those looking for something a little different in the horror department (since it really isn't horror...it just defies description).

Tell Me What You See - a review.......2005-12-04
I thought this book would end better than it did. It kind of followed the same path as 'The Lovely Bones' when I was reading it. Good start, excellent middle, and kind of a letdown in the end. All in all, it was a pretty good book, though. Kind of made me wish there was a sequel. Decide for yourself.

Book Description
Encyclopedia of Medical Devices and Instrumentation John G. Webster, Editor-in-Chief This comprehensive encyclopedia, the work of more than 400 contributors, includes 266 articles on devices and instrumentation that are currently or likely to be useful in medicine and biomedical engineering. The four volumes include 3,022 pages of text that concentrates on how technology assists the branches of medicine. The articles emphasize the contributions of engineering, physics, and computers to each of the general areas of medicine, and are designed not for peers, but rather for workers from related fields who wish to take a first look at what is important in the subject. Highly recommended for university biomedical engineering and medical reference collections, and for anyone with a science background or an interest in technology. Includes a 78-page index, cross-references, and high-quality diagrams, illustrations, and photographs. 1988 (0 471-82936-6) 4-Volume Set Introduction to Radiological Physics and Radiation Dosimetry Frank Herbert Attix provides complete and useful coverage of radiological physics. Unlike most treatments of the subject, it encompasses radiation dosimetry in general, rather than discussing only its applications in medical or health physics. The treatment flows logically from basics to more advanced topics. Coverage extends through radiation interactions to cavity theories and dosimetry of X-rays, charged particles, and neutrons. Several important subjects that have never been thoroughly analyzed in the literature are treated here in detail, such as charged-particle equilibrium, broad-beam attenuation and geometries, derivation of the Kramers X-ray spectrum, and the reciprocity theorem, which is also extended to the nonisotropic homogeneous case. 1986 (0 471-01146-0) 607 pp. Medical Physics John R. Cameron and James G. Skofronick This detailed text describes medical physics in a simple, straightforward manner. It discusses the physical principles involved in the control and functon of organs and organ systems such as the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, and circulatory system. There is also coverage of the application of mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism to medicine, particularly of the various instruments used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. 1978 (0 471-13131-8) 615 pp.

Book Description
The book addresses scientists and technical experts who have already some background knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and who want to know more about standardisation in GIS, in particular, the role of the ISO. The authors also meet the needs of programmers who are going to implement ISO 19100 standards and who need a better understanding of the overall structure of the standards. Last, but not least, this richly illustrated book will help readers to better understand the rather abstract ISO documents.

Metadata standard interoperability: application in the geographic information domain [An article from: Computers, Environment and Urban Systems]

Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The use of metadata expands on the opportunities for interoperability. Interoperability involves making multiple information sources access, manipulate and share data across their boundaries. Metadata descriptions from different domains are not semantically distinct but overlap and relate to each other in complex ways. As the number, size and complexity of the metadata standards grow, the task of facilitating metadata in different standards becomes more difficult and tedious. A possible solution for this problem is the creation of mechanisms that enable the translation of this information in order to make it conform to the different standards. These mechanisms are denominated ''crosswalks'' and the objective of this work is to present the process of ''crosswalk-creation'', which has been used by a research team at the University of Zaragoza in order to translate information among some of the most extended standards for geographic information metadata.

When Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz is hired by her old friend Barry Dean to provide a lavish buffet for the opening of his chic new Aspen Meadows mall, the last thing she expects to stumble over is Barry himself, stabbed to death with one of her very own carving knives. When the police arrest her assistant, Julian, for the murder, Goldy launches her own over-caffeinated investigation. There's enough espresso in this culinary cozy to keep the reader wide awake while Davidson's irrepressible heroine sets up the suspects, solves the mystery, sends up a Shopaholics Anonymous meeting, and dishes up 10 recipes for fabulous party food, including the Chopping Spree salad of the title. The plot's somewhat creaky and there's hardly any dramatic tension, but fans of this popular series won't mind a bit. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Her inventive recipe for mixing first-class suspense and five-star fare has made Diane Mott Davidson a favorite of mystery lovers and a mainstay on major bestseller lists across the country. Now she has prepared another irresistibly tempting tale spiced with mystery and mayhem…
For Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz, business isn’t just booming--it’s skyrocketing. Her friend Marla is constantly warning her, “Success can kill you.” But Goldy doesn’t take the warning literally until her next booking: a cocktail party for the Westside Mall’s Elite Shoppers Club.
While setting up, Goldy is nearly run down by a truck with no intention of stopping. Then she finds an old friend in a pile of sale shoes--stabbed with one of Goldy’s new knives. Goldy must catch the real killer between whipping up Sweethearts’ Swedish Meatballs, Quiche Me Quick, and Diamond Lovers’ Hot Crab Dip. Why was the victim carrying a powerful narcotic? Who hired a private investigator shortly before the murder? Goldy’s gourmet instincts tell her the final course in this case will be a real killer.

Murder Mystery.......2007-05-12
Love these books, enjoyed each one, purchased and read all to date. Arrived promptly.
Not so hot -- worst of series.......2007-01-05
B"H
I've liked all of the Dianne Mott Davidson books, but this was the weakest, by far. What a snotty kid Arch has turned into -- made worse by the fact that the new character, Liz, also has a spoiled brat. The both need a dose of Dr. Laura.
It's one thing to create unsavory characters to heighten tension, it's quite another to fill the book with them. In this one, there's no one to like -- It actually occured to me to wonder who really wrote this thing.
Maybe it's time to leave Goldy and Liz to their futures of bailing out their kids -- literally -- and focus on Julian, instead. He's the only one to have his act together.
So-so plot, annoying characters, not especially interesting recipes. I won't be looking forward to the next one quite as much....
A New Character!.......2006-06-29
See my review on Catering to Nobody. Also, the new character Goldy's new assistant Liz Fury works in very nicely.
Diane Mott Davidson's books are very easy to read. Something that will put a person in a good mood.
Excellent Culinary Cozy.......2005-09-02
Goldy's catering business has taken off and she's exhausted. She caters an event at an expanding shopping mall and disaster strikes, as it usually does when Goldy is present. The worst part is, her dear young friend Jullian is arrested for murder. Goldy sets out to solve the crime and get Jullian out of jail. This is an especially well-plotted story that moves along at a rapid pace. Never a dull moment. The regular cast of characters are present and as enjoyable as ever. A multitude of nasty suspects gives the reader plenty of opportunities to boo and hiss. As always, many wonderful sounding recipes are included. I made the Spice Of Life Cookies and they turned out great...soft and full of flavor like a good molasses-type cookie. Davidson's books should come with warning labels. Caution: May cause weight gain.
Dying to shop!.......2005-08-11
Caterer Goldy Schulz is suddenly overwhelmed with work, but she's not complaining. Her biggest job is catering a buffet for her old college buddy, Barry Dean, who is the manager of the local mall. While carrying in her food, she and Barry are almost run over by a truck, and later, she finds Barry's dead body in a mall shoe store. Her assistant Julian is found pulling a knife out of Barry's body and suddenly he becomes the chief suspect. Goldy knows that Julian is not guilty and sets about finding the real murderer. She investigates Barry's girlfriends, one of whom has a sister who has spent herself into serious debt. Goldy's son Arch is becoming a spoiled, unpleasant teenager and her assistant Liz has a boy who is a thief. With all of these red herrings and distractions, Goldy has a problem solving the case, but her friend Barry helps her with clues he leaves before he dies. This is another good read from author Diane Mott Davidson.
