      Book Description

      Transfer pricing is a dynamic and multidimensional topic that has captured the attention of academicians, corporate executives, and tax authorities for many decades. The issues of transfer pricing are very complex and the stakes are extremely high because more than 40 percent of international trade is trade between related entities. This book examines many important tax and management issues related to transfer pricing. These issues include new transfer pricing regulations and their implications, the selection of proper transfer pricing methods, major environmental variables, and issues concerning the administration of a transfer pricing system. The author also presents many interesting findings from a recent study on U.S. transfer pricing practices. The author begins by describing the nature of intrafirm transactions in a corporate environment and the significance of intrafirm transactions in international trade. Recent changes and major transfer pricing legislation and regulations in the United States are explained. New transfer pricing regulations in Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the European Community and their implications are also discussed. These are followed by a presentation on research methodology and profile of 143 respondent firms. The author then explains the findings on transfer pricing methods and environmental variables of international transfer pricing. Current transfer pricing practices are compared with those of an earlier study done in 1977. Other issues such as system objectives, resolution of policy conflicts, and policies on outside purchases are covered by this monograph. General conclusions from this research and suggestions for further research are also provided.

      2 out of 5 stars Well researched but too selectively reported.......2006-06-22

      A 600+ page, heavily footnoted polemic against the European Union, and particularly Britain's EU membership.

      While I share the authors' general view about the EU, I found the book ultimately unconvincing. Part of the problem is just that there's too much of the negative here. The way the authors tell it, there are seemingly no benefits whatsoever to Britain being part of the EU - and that's just not credible. Britain must be getting something out of it (even if not enough, on balance) otherwise why would each of the major political parties support its continued membership? The authors could present the evidence on both sides and then argue why the negative outweighs the positive, but they don't, and the end result is that I wonder what they left out and why.

      And there are other reasons to question their credibility. On the few occasions they have to mention the Balkan Wars, their references are almost comically one-sided. They offer an out-and-out falsehood to explain why the Irish people ultimately supported the Nice Treaty. And they refer to an avowedly anti-immigration pressure group merely as a "specialist thinktank" when citing a rather apocalyptic prediction it makes about Britain being flooded by migrants.

      Amusingly, for all the authors' expressions of distaste for "supranationalism", it never seems to click with them that the country they feel so passionately about is itself a supranational state ... and nor, of course, does the irony even occur to them that they are so fiercely defending the sovereignty of a country which has denied the same to so many others.

      The EU deserves criticism and the European people need books written from this perspective. Pity this isn't a better one.

      5 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever written on the EU.......2006-04-06

      This is a new edition of the authors' 2003 classic history of the European Union from its origins immediately after the First World War to the present.

      They show that the EU is not about sharing or cooperation between sovereign governments. It is not inter-governmental, but supranational. The dividing line is the veto: where there are vetoes, there is still inter-governmentalism, still independent, sovereign nations; with vetoes gone, there is only a new, supranational form of government beyond all democratic control. Governments and parliaments are left in place, but are subordinated to the EU.

      The EU's founder Jean Monnet described the EU's method: "Europe's nations should be guided towards a super state without their people understanding what is happening. This can be accomplished by successive steps each disguised as having an economic purpose, but which will eventually and irreversibly lead to federation." The single currency was the most important of these steps: as Monnet said, "Via money Europe could become political in five years."

      Giuliano Amato, Vice-President of the Convention that drew up the EU Constitution, said, "In Europe one needs to act `as if' - as if what was wanted was little, in order to obtain much, as if States were to remain sovereign to convince them to concede sovereignty ... The Commission in Brussels, for example, should act as if it were a technical instrument, in order to be able to be treated as a government. And so on by disguise and subterfuge."

      How has EU membership affected Britain? Our industries have become expendable. For example, when we entered the EEC, a senior civil servant in the Scottish fisheries department advised ministers not to go into any detail on the damage caused to the fishing industry: "The more one is drawn into such explanations, the more difficult it is to avoid exposing the weaknesses of the inshore fisheries position, the only answer to which may be that in the wider context they must be regarded as expendable."

      We do not need the EU. The National Institute for Economic and Social Research found that withdrawing from the EU would not lose us jobs. The Independent reported this as, `8 million jobs could be lost if Britain quits EU' (18 February 2000). The NIESR's director, Dr Martin Weale, described the report as "absurd ... pure Goebbels. In many years of academic research I cannot recall such a wilful distortion of the facts." Subsequently, Gordon Brown claimed, "750,000 British companies export from Britain to Europe": the government's own figure was 18,000.

      The EU has created a system of agencies, over-ministries, which are already directing national governments and civil servants: Europol, Eurojust, the European Human Rights Agency, the European Fisheries Agency, the European Railways Agency, the European Chemicals Agency, the European Aviation Safety Agency, the European Maritime Safety Agency, the European Environment Agency, the European Food Safety Authority, the European Health Protection Agency, the European Health and Safety Agency and the European Defence Agency.

      The EU Constitution was designed to give these bodies legal authority, but the EU carries on regardless of the French and Dutch peoples' rejection of the Constitution. A leading military journal, DefenceNews, said, "voters cannot so easily put the brakes on destiny." The head of the European Parliament's defence sub-committee, Karl von Wogau, said, "I am not discouraged for the European Security and Defence Policy because it has its own fixed agenda and that will move ahead even if the constitution is not in place." As Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Council, said, "If it's a Yes we will say `on we go', and if it's a No we will say `we continue.'"

      The authors tell us about the EU-wide network of academics who propagandise against their nations, on behalf of the EU, the 491 Jean Monnet professors, 102 in British universities. The `Jean Monnet Project' co-finances 2,319 teaching schemes in universities to `promote European integration'.

      The British working class's resolute hostility to the euro defeated that EU attack. The EU's rulers and their quislings still want to impose their Constitution. We must respond by demanding that we leave the EU, to save all the EU member nations' national interests, our democracy, and our sovereign independence, our right to govern ourselves.

                      1 out of 5 stars An Heroic Failure.......2003-03-25

                      Along with Scott's expedition, this at best can ber described as an heroic failure. For the want of an editor this Antarctic encyclopedia should be consigned to the nearest crevasse, but don't rely on this encyclopedia for the coordinates, because more than likely they would be wrong. Bernard Stonehouse should be regretting having his name associated with this ill-fated publishing adventure. At $ per volume an editor could have been employed to correct the more than numerous mistakes. A random examination of enteries for some sub-Antarctic isles reveal mistakes for every entry. Some of the maps are equivalent to the fanciful fabrication of medieavle cartographers - here be sea lions! The coloured map insert provides us with to entries for Davis station, one on the Ingrid Christensen Coast for Australia, and another near Scott Glacier with Australia and Russia as the proprieters. Moving on to Heard Island Station entry the coordinets given put the station some 15 miles to the east of it's actual location. The map for McDonald Islands is just plain fanciful the shape of McDonald Islands bares no resemblence to reality. Looking at the entry for Macquarie Island the map notes that the island is known as "Maquairi" Island. Hasselborough Bay has become "Hasselburg Bay." How many more errors? A much better buy would be a combined purchase of Trewby's Antarctica encyclopedia with Hince's The Antarctic Dictionary, at less than a quarter of the price of Stonehouse.

                            Book Description

                            A new approach to understanding nonlinear dynamics and strange attractors
                            The behavior of a physical system may appear irregular or chaotic even when it is completely deterministic and predictable for short periods of time into the future. How does one model the dynamics of a system operating in a chaotic regime? Older tools such as estimates of the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents and estimates of the spectrum of fractal dimensions do not sufficiently answer this question. In a significant evolution of the field of Nonlinear Dynamics, The Topology of Chaos responds to the fundamental challenge of chaotic systems by introducing a new analysis method-Topological Analysis-which can be used to extract, from chaotic data, the topological signatures that determine the stretching and squeezing mechanisms which act on flows in phase space and are responsible for generating chaotic data. Beginning with an example of a laser that has been operated under conditions in which it behaved chaotically, the authors convey the methodology of Topological Analysis through detailed chapters on:
                            * Discrete Dynamical Systems: Maps
                            * Continuous Dynamical Systems: Flows
                            * Topological Invariants
                            * Branched Manifolds
                            * The Topological Analysis Program
                            * Fold Mechanisms
                            * Tearing Mechanisms
                            * Unfoldings
                            * Symmetry
                            * Flows in Higher Dimensions
                            * A Program for Dynamical Systems Theory
                            Suitable at the present time for analyzing "strange attractors" that can be embedded in three-dimensional spaces, this groundbreaking approach offers researchers and practitioners in the discipline a complete and satisfying resolution to the fundamental questions of chaotic systems.

                            Book Description

                            Ann B. Ross's most recent novel, Miss Julia's School of Beauty, was a New York Times extended bestseller, with more fans drawn to Miss Julia's adventures every outing. Miss Julia Stands Her Ground finds our steel magnolia looking forward to many peaceful and happy years with her new husband, Sam. But she still has plenty to worry about. When Hazel Marie's troublemaking uncle, Brother Vernon Puckett, comes back to town, he claims to have conclusive proof that Little Lloyd is not the son of Miss Julia's late, philandering husband Wesley Lloyd Springer—a fact to which Miss Julia would have gladly subscribed a few years back. But that was then, before Miss Julia's life revolved around Little Lloyd, before that magical holiday when he became the apple of her eye.

                            With DNA testing the only possible way to settle the dispute, Miss Julia shudders at the thought of exhuming her dead husband's body. But her housekeeper Lillian has a few souvenirs of Wesley Lloyd's life tucked away that, though a little creepy, might just be the key to ending the whole ugly mess. Another hilarious adventure, Miss Julia Stands Her Ground confirms what we know in our hearts—family is always thicker than blood.

                            Praise for Ann B. Ross and the Miss Julia series:
                            “Miss Julia is one of the most delightful characters to come along in years.”

                            The people Miss Julia loves most are under fire, and she goes to all lengths to keep them safe. Miss Julia is the heroine again!

                            As a break from some of the heavier books I love to read, Miss Julia is a delight! Her outlook on life and those who are in her life never bore and I feel like I know these people.

                            I always pass my Miss Julia books on to my daughters as they love them as much as I.

                            MISS JULIA STANDS HER GROUND by Ann B. Ross (Penguin ISBN 978-0-14-303855-9) This is number seven in the series. I haven't read any of the others. I have been in cozy moods and liked this book taking place in the south. Maybe I should call it aged "southern comfort." Miss Julia may be a remarried widow and sixtyish senior citizen, but she is not one to sit around and twiddle her thumbs. She even has a policeman who rents a room from her.
                            Living in a small town did not stop Miss Julia from taking in Hazel Marie, her dead husband's mistress and their child Little Lloyd. Miss Julia is teaching Hazel a lot; however, some habits are hard to break. Miss Julia is a very wealthy widow, but is tight with her money which I gather is thanks to Wesley Lloyd Springer, her dead husband. Lillian works for Miss Julia and lets her know when she is not doing what she thinks is best, and she gets away with it. Another strong influence is lawyer Sam Murdoch, who is now Miss Julia's husband.
                            Things have been fine until Brother Vern Puckett, Hazel Marie's crooked "preacher" uncle, arrives in town. He is out to take control of Hazel Marie's money. He is out to prove Little Lloyd was not Wesley's child and even gets one guy to step forward and claim Little Lloyd as his own. Brother Vern is not the most upstanding person in any community. If he could prove that Wesley wasn't Little Lloyd's father, Miss Julia and Hazel would stand to lose quite a bit. If Brother Vern gets away with his claim, living arrangements and finances for Miss Julia and Hazel would be screwed up. Thanks goodness for DNA but how it is gotten to prove who Little Lloyd's father really is something else.
                            Then a number of Miss Julia's church have signed a petition to have Miss Julia become the first woman elder of the church. Pastor Ledbetter is totally against that. How Miss Julia deals with that is another little thing added to the book.
                            Some other shenanigans take place, like money lending.

                            5 out of 5 stars Feisty Miss Julia wins my heart!.......2007-03-18

                            When the Mitford series ended, I was at a loss, but Amazon recommended the Miss Julia Series. What a delight! If you're familiar with Father Tim and Cynthia from Mitford, NC, you will soon see how the antics and situations of Miss Julia compare. Page after page you will find yourself either laughing out loud or sniffling into your Kleenex. Miss Julia Stands Her Ground is only one of many excellent books about the loveable and sometimes unpredictable Miss Julia. I have read 4 or 5 of these books and have loved every one. So if you're up for a rollicking yet heart-warming story about a 60-ish year old whipper snapper of a lady, then pick up the first book in the series, "Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind." You'll fall in love with her and then work your way up to Miss Julia Stands Her Ground.
