Book Description
Naughty Bits, the longest-running solo comic by a female alternative cartoonist, came to an end in 2004 after a 14-year, 40-issue run. Beloved for the expressive scrawl of Gregory's line and her take-no-prisoners satirical approach, it was particularly notable for introducing the world to Bitchy Bitcha woman who is eternally, magnificently, and for the most part, quite justifiably pissed off at the world around her!
This extra-thick, very reasonably priced volume collects the entire first half of the Bitchy Bitch saga, and it ranges widely in her eventful life. There are stories about Bitchy's travails as a little girl (when she was just "Bitsy Bitch"), including that greatest horror of all, the holidays; a long sequence about her hippie free-love days in the '70s (and the harrowing abortion that followed); tales of her miserable days as an office drone surrounded by dunces, lechers, and the occasional ultra-Christian maniac; and the hilarious full-length graphic novel "Bitchy Takes a Vacation," where a tropical getaway turns into a fiasco (romanic and otherwise) of epic proportions.
The book will also feature a brand new full-length story that chronicles the (never before shown) death of Bitchy's tempestuous father (well, she had to get that temper from somewhere), as Gregory once again finds the humor in even the grimmest situation.
If anger is an energy, as Johnny Rotten once said, then Life's a Bitch is a 240-page slab of caffeinated fury... but laugh-out-loud funny!
Customer Reviews:
Bitched Out.......2005-12-24
Simplistic, trite, degrading to all who have struggled with this issue. To call it comedy is to call Schindler's List comedy. Rent the movie it is a higher seller than this tragedy of penmanship and 10th grade art.
A comic book masterpiece.......2005-08-06
Roberta Gregory's masterful (and angry, and often supremely profound) Bitchy Bitch stories have somehow been a bit overlooked compared to the level of acclaim thrown at work by Art Spiegelman, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Will Eisner and other comic book masters. But make no mistake, Gregory is one of the very best comic book writers out there, and Bitchy Bitch is her magnum opus. There's simply no excuse not to buy this new cost-effective edition of Gregory's work.

Out of print?!?!?!.......2007-08-09
It is so sad that this book is out of print!! It is hilarious - and while it was aimed towards the Yuppies of the early 90's, it is all too relevant again, in this age of Bugaboo driving, Cookie-reading parents!!
Great book.......2006-06-02
This book wakes up every sleepless parent reading Goodnight Moon for the 1,000,000th time. You will get a kick out of it, and your kids won't know the difference (they can actually relate since it is all about their yuppie existance!)
brilliant and hilarious!.......2003-12-25
How did this one escape my notice when it was in print? Why is it out of print? One of the funniest parodies, (and not at all unkind), i've encountered. Especially perfect for those of us just coming out of endless recitations of the original Goodnight Moon (which is marvelous but does tend to leave a large dent in one's brain the eleventy-millionth time you read it aloud). Delightful read, superbly crafted parody.

Cross-country flying for MSFS 5.1 and up, including add-ons.......1998-10-29
This is a compilation of columns written by Alfred Poor for "Full Throttle" magazine and covers 30 VFR flights for Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.1 and up. 15 flights are for MSFS 5.1 (disk or cd versions) default scenery and 15 are for add-on scenery (3 each for New York, Carribean, Tokyo, Paris, and another which I've forgotten). With the recenty release of MSFS98 and the anticipated release of MSFS2000, this book becomes even more interesting as the scenery gets updated along the flight paths.
I consider this book to be one of the better "add-ons" for MSFS, at half the price of most software packages :

Way too basic.......2007-01-09
This book is for someone who has never even used a computer or Word. It is very nicely put together with lots of color photos and screen shots but I wanted to know more than how to insert clip art or justify type which is what this book covers. If you are complete novice to the PC this is the book for you.
The closest thing to physically moving your hand.......2003-11-27
In my work writing training material, I have found that one of the most difficult tasks is how to represent a series of mouse actions where the screen appearance alters after each action. It is not quite so difficult when the audience consists of experienced mouse jockeys, but is very hard when the readership is inexperienced. The manner in which that problem is addressed in this book is the most impressive thing about it. Using a series of numbered icons with captions and pointers to the location on a screen shot, you are gently led through the series of proper actions.
The sequence of actions is also repeated in text form underneath the diagrams, and the item to be acted on is named. On the bottom of each two page set there is an introduction caption on the left and tip and hint captions on the right. While this text is well written and helpful, I found the choice of colors to be an occasional problem. At times, two shades of orange were used as background for white text and there is not a great deal of contrast between them, which made it difficult to read. However, I had no trouble reading the black on green, black on yellow and white on purple.
If your needs are to learn the basics of FrontPage in a hurry, then this book is for you. With it, even a beginner can have simple pages designed and active in an hour or two.

Too Fast - Too Easy - Too Simple.......2004-02-16
This is a very simple book - really just screen shots of the menus for various tasks and it steps you through the most general and simple use of them. For all practical purposes, there is no information about anything in this book! The typical treatment of a subject is a simple paragraph that essentially says "You might want to do this with your web page - well you can!" Then screen shots of the process involved in its simplest form. Next topic... It is difficult for me to imagine this would be of any use to anyone.

The Lexicon Topographicum Urbis Romae is a multi-volume set that contains 2,300 entries on the topography of ancient Rome. It provides an up-to-date account of current research on public and private buildings and monuments constructed within the Aurelianic walls through the early seventh century A.D. Both classical and Christian structures are discussed, whether identified through archaeological remains or known only from ancient or later sources. This final volume includes analytic indexes to monuments and persons, a general bibliography, and articles on the sources used by the contributors, such as ancient plans, coins, and historical reliefs. The successor to Platner and Ashby's Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome, now out of print, the Lexicon is published by Edizioni Quasar of Rome and distributed in North America by the J. Boston's so-called white flight of the 1960s and '70s became a national symbol of the urban crisis. But what caused whites to move to the suburbs in such great numbers? Common knowledge holds that an influx of African Americans, assisted by the Boston Banks Urban Renewal Group, pushed Jews out of their neighborhoods and into the suburbs. In Urban Exodus, however, historian Gerald H. Gamm argues that the driving force behind suburbanization is not race but religion.
Gamm studies two remarkably similar Boston neighborhoods, Roxbury and Dorchester, and argues that, while the Jewish population left, the Catholics stayed because of religious rules--rules that "are real not because they are written down but because they are obeyed." Looking at canon law and Talmudic guidelines, he separates issues of membership, authority, and "rootedness." In brief, Catholic congregations are bound by the geographical lines of their parishes and the physical structures of their parish churches, as established by Church hierarchy. Jewish congregations, on the other hand, are more autonomous, with the power to create and dissolve synagogues--and worshippers are not bound by geography and can attend the synagogues of their choice. Gamm is quick to point out that he does not argue that Catholics are necessarily more likely than Jews to stay in urban neighborhoods, but that the Catholic parish is better able to sustain neighborhood attachments. He also notes that race is a newer issue--"only after the urban exodus had nearly run its course, emptying apartments and lowering rents, were blacks able to overcome longstanding barriers to entry." Indeed, it was the growing population of the automobile and automobile suburbs in the 1920s that pushed suburbanization, as middle-class whites left still-white urban neighborhoods. Urban Exodus is a thought-provoking look at the shifting populations in America's cities--and the role organized religion plays in those shifts. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
Across the country, white ethnics have fled cities for suburbs. But many have stayed in their old neighborhoods. When the busing crisis erupted in Boston in the 1970s, Catholics were in the forefront of resistance. Jews, 70,000 of whom had lived in Roxbury and Dorchester in the early 1950s, were invisible during the crisis. They were silent because they departed the city more quickly and more thoroughly than Boston's Catholics. Only scattered Jews remained in Dorchester and Roxbury by the mid-1970s.
In telling the story of why the Jews left and the Catholics stayed, Gerald Gamm places neighborhood institutions--churches, synagogues, community centers, schools--at its center. He challenges the long-held assumption that bankers and real estate agents were responsible for the rapid Jewish exodus. Rather, according to Gamm, basic institutional rules explain the strength of Catholic attachments to neighborhood and the weakness of Jewish attachments. Because they are rooted, territorially defined, and hierarchical, parishes have frustrated the urban exodus of Catholic families. And because their survival was predicated on their portability and autonomy, Jewish institutions exacerbated the Jewish exodus.
Gamm shows that the dramatic transformation of urban neighborhoods began not in the 1950s or 1960s, but in the 1920s. Not since Anthony Lukas's Common Ground has there been a book that so brilliantly explores not just Boston's dilemma but the roots of the American urban crisis.
Customer Reviews:
book quite different from its title.......1999-11-02
The Book examines why white ethnics left the inner city of Boston which became almost exclusively minority. 50,000 Jews lived in the Franklin Park/Franklin Field Blue Hill Avenue area of Boston as recently as the 50s and today they are all gone.
The title suggests that Jews left and Catholics didn't. The author demonstrates that Jewish institutions such as synagogues were portable and that most of the major synagogues moved from Boston to the suburbs. The author shows that Catholic institutions cannot move and that parishioners must worship at the church where they live. However, the author shows that most white Catholics also left as the African-American population expanded south. The churches remained to serve a non-white Catholic population, particularly immigrants from Haiti and Central and South America. The author does not address how it might have been possible to build a stable, multi-racial community in Boston. He underestimates the effects of the BBURG line, blockbusting, and redlining in the process of neighborhood transition here. He devotes inadequate attention to efforts at community building, crime watches and such that would have assisted in attacking the breakdown of order which impacted the change in neighborhood.
The author does show that Jewish movement to be suburbs began as early as the 20s and that those remaining in Boston were largely older and poorer. As the institutions moved out, anyone who could moved as well, to Newton and Brookline, or south to Sharon and towns around it. Catholic movement south out of Boston accelerated with the school desegregation decision in 1975.
Worth reading for a provocative thesis, even if I don't agree with most of it. Should be compared to Levine and Harmon's Death of an American Jewish Community which is a different take on the same events. This is a sad description of the rather sudden end to a once viable urban community.

Book Description
From the world's greatest scientists--the world's greatest science book! With a foreword written by critically acclaimed author Simon Singh (Fermat's Last Theorem) and essays by such major writers as Richard Dawkings, Susan Greenfield, and John Gribbin, it presents 250 of the most significant milestones in the history of scientific discovery. Accompanying this unique perspective on our ever-evolving view of the universe are some of the most visually dramatic illustrations you'll ever see. Short, lucid articles focus on everything from the speculations of the ancient Greeks to today's Nobel Prize winners, from Ptolemy's theory of an Earth-centered universe to the first steps on the moon, and from the dawning of the concept of zero to the cloning of Dolly the sheep. Biology, physics, astronomy, medicine, and mathematics: the breakthroughs in every field are all here and celebrated, in the first truly accessible, fully illustrated story of science.

The Breadth and Beauty of Science.......2007-03-12
This heavy coffee-table book describes 250 scientific and mathematical advances, one per double-page spread. Arranged in chronological order, each advance includes who discovered it, the year of discovery, and an easy to understand (well, as far as possible, some advances are just more complicated than others) description.
Almost all entries consist of one page of text with a facing page of a relevant illustration or photo. Each article is cross-referenced to related entries if you want to pursue a single topic.
This book will interest anyone with a casual or professional interest in science and mathematics, or just the intellectually curious. It is not an exhaustive history of science, but a collection of highlights simply and attractively presented.
You won't want to read this all in one sitting. It is a book for browsing, dipping into random pages and discovering some new snippet, or maybe just something you didn't know about an old snippet. The breadth of subjects is enormous and it spans the history of thought from 35,000 years ago to the present.
In fact, it is the perfect coffee-table book. Each page is a self-contained entry, so you can spend as long or as short a time browsing as you like as you sip your tea or coffee and think about life, the universe and everything. You will certainly learn about things you never knew existed.
