Book Description
The current trend towards globalization is posing a substantial challenge to SME clusters to restructure and reach out to distant markets and knowledge sources, while at the same time exploiting the advantages of local factors and agglomeration. This book represents a first attempt to analyze these issues in detail, employing novel empirical evidence.
The authors focus on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Italy and Taiwan, two countries in which these businesses characterize the national industrial structure. They find that in the current climate of globalization, there is no best practice model for organizing an industrial cluster since a diversity of successful institutional arrangements is possible. They demonstrate that over time SME clusters can evolve and that globalization can reshape their upgrading options by providing a variety of international knowledge linkages. Thus, the authors conclude that the development of local and global networks and new interactive modes of knowledge creation, which have co-evolved as a result of globalization, have provided the necessary conditions for competitive survival.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the authors utilize a number of analytical tools to evaluate their survey data and present an original comparison between the experiences of two countries that are facing the challenges of globalization, often with differing strategies. This book will be of great interest to industrial and international economists, policymakers, and corporate and SME managers.

Big help for small business.......1998-09-23
At last, here's a book about how to get financing for a small business that covers all the possible sources in plain, readable English! The handy "Quick Pick Chart" of financing resources is worth the price of the book, not to mention the many sample forms and useful glossary. This is the fifth book in the CCH small business series and it's every bit as good as its predecessors.

From the supplier: Spraying can be a highly efficient way to supply plants with nutrients through their leaves, stems, and flowers. Such foliar feeding, however, should be combined with well cared for soil so that plant roots receive nutrients as well. Foliar feeding is especially important during dry weather.

Description:
We examined @d^1^3C and @d^1^5N in needle (current and 1-year-old) and soil samples collected on two occasions (July and September 1999) from a 15-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stand in an irrigation and fertilization experiment to investigate whether these treatments leave specific isotope signals in the samples and thus to infer the effects of treatments on C and N cycling. Irrespective of foliar age or sampling date, carbon isotope discrimination (@D) was increased by irrigation, and decreased by fertilization. The carbon isotope discrimination model suggested that increased @D by irrigation was due to decreased water use efficiency (WUE) through increased stomatal and/or mesophyll conductance. The decreased @D by fertilization and published gas exchange measurements at the same site suggest that water stress resulting from increased water demand in the fertilized plots improved WUE through increased stomatal control of water loss. Foliar @d^1^5N values were not affected by irrigation, but were increased by fertilization. The @d^1^5N value of soil NH"4^+ were higher than those of NO"3^- and were positively correlated with foliar @d^1^5N, suggesting that tree uptake of NH"4^+ was one of the factors affecting foliar @d^1^5N. We conclude that irrigation and fertilization affected @d^1^3C and @d^1^5N values in plant and soil samples, reflecting changed C and N cycling patterns and water use efficiency in the studied loblolly pine stand.

Book Description
Climatic Change is a rapidly evolving domain that has prompted the publication of numerous scientific works in recent years, reflecting both the public and scientific interest in the topic. This book focuses upon climate processes, variability and change and applies the general principles related to these issues, particularly in Switzerland. Although a small country, Switzerland is characterized by complex topography where climatic processes are often enhanced due to the presence of the Alps. In addition, there is a remarkable density of observational data in both the natural and social sciences that enable a comprehensive assessment of climate processes, their long-term trends and their impacts.
This book draws upon recent scientific work by the author, as well as by close colleagues working within scientific networks both in Switzerland and Europe, in order to provide the reader with up-to-date information on climate processes in the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.
This book is intended for students from the undergraduate level onwards and researchers interested in climate issues specific to the alpine region.

Book Description
This book is devoted to the numerous phenomena arising from the interplay between electromagnetic resonances and nonlinear optical interactions. These resonances are associated with surface plasmas or guided waves, excited in nonlinear optical resonators such as prisms or grating couplers. Topics include rigorous theories of diffraction by gratings in nonlinear optics, presented in a form ready for numerical implementations; scattering the matrix description in nonlinear optics leading to the phenomological approach based on the use of poles and zeros and other behaviours.

Book Description
The hero of Carl Reiner's nutty and wonderful novel, Nat Noland, is hard at work on his fifth book, his own version of Genesis, concentrating on the relationship between Cain and Abel. While investigating their relationship, he starts to investigate his relationship with himself. His doting wife, Glennie, gets worried when she hears him having a loud, heated discussion while he's alone in the basement. Because he is unaware that he is talking to himself -- in two distinct voices -- she encourages him to seek the help of the famous Viennese psychiatrist Dr. Frucht.
After a few sessions, Dr. Frucht elicits descriptions of Nat's recurring childhood dreams and the fact that he never knew his biological parents. In the lobby, when Nat bumps into the lovely Dr. Gertrude Trampleasure, an empathologist, she tells him how much he resembles her old teenage sweetheart, Buddy Keebler: "You two could be twins!" With the assistance of a private eye, Nat embarks on a quest to search for this "twin" and his unknown past, while continuing to work on his biblical novel, NNNNN.

Customer Reviews:
Not so much ..........2007-02-18
In general, I've loved Carl Reiner's work. His early TV roles with Sid Caesar, his 2000-year-old man with Mel Brooks; all brilliant. But this book ... eh, not so much. I thought it rambled too much, and it just wasn't very funny. In an interview at the end of the audiobook, Reiner readily admits that he wrote the book a page a time, not having any idea what would come next, and that's the way it reads; not many ideas. I know that method works for some writers, but in this case it didn't. And the title; gee, I wonder how many seconds he thought about that one! Five, maybe?
3 1/2 stars.......2006-06-26
I listened to the unabridged version, and though it wasn't a captivating story it was pleasant and somewhat humorous. It was read by Carl Reiner, who did a good job overall, including his characters accents. If you happen to see it in the library, you might want to give it a shot.
Adults' Fairy Tale.......2006-06-11
It is a true fable where all is well that ends well. Mr. Reiner writes with ease about persons with distinguished achievements, wealth, and health. Even the ones who are sick are made to seem fit. There is a reason behind everything and each character possesses great human values such as compassion and understanding. Even the ogre of the tale has his good sides. Of course, the whole story is light and full of mirth. That is Mr. Reiner's style. He knows how to make people laugh. There is a minor story within the main story. Both are equally enjoyable. Nat, the main character, suffers from serious personality disorder that he succumbs to seeing a therapist. One thing leads to another and he is on the journey of searching the truth of his origin. He finds out a lot of information and a few close relations. It is first and foremost a love story between men and women and among family members. When told in Mr. Reiner's wild humor, it becomes more pleasing.
Couldn't put it down! .......2006-03-15
I'm so glad I found this. Great writing. Enjoyed this book very much. What a funny man Carl Reiner is! The names he came up with- hilarious!- and the TWIN thing- too much!
What a mind he has. I would like to read some more of his writing.
This is a quick read-you've been warned- I read twenty-two chapters in a couple of hours, with a few interruptions. It was the kind of book that "I couldn't put down". Finally I went to bed but couldn't sleep so I got back up and finished it. Started weird- didn't really care for his bible story- but I admire his thinking and coming up with it- interesting take- but the rest of it was good/better. Good story about Nat. Light, easy, fun reading. Good for a quick trip, for a plane ride.
NNNNN.......2006-02-19
Quick witted, quick read, funny and serious all at once. I enjoyed this novel very much

I Escaped From Auschwitz
ASIN: 0801441307 |
Book Description
On 7 April 1944 a Slovakian Jew, Rudolf Vrba (born Walter Rosenberg), and a fellow prisoner, Alfred Wetzler, succeeded in escaping from Auschwitz-Birkenau. As block registrars both men had been allowed relative (though always risky) freedom of movement in the camp and thus had been able to observe the massive preparations underway at Birkenau of the entire killing machine for the eradication of Europe's last remaining Jewish community, the 800,000 Jews of Hungary. The two men somehow made their way back to Slovakia where they sought out the Jewish Council (Judenrat) to warn them of the impending disaster. The Vrba-Wetzler report was the first document about the Auschwitz death camp to reach the free world and to be accepted as credible. Its authenticity broke the barrier of skepticism and apathy that had existed up to that point. However, though their critical and alarming assessment was in the hands of Hungarian Jewish leaders by April 28 or early May 1944, it is doubtful that the information it contained reached more than just a small part of the prospective victimsduring May and June 1944, about 437,000 Hungarian Jews boarded, in good faith, the "resettlement" trains that were to carry them off to Auschwitz, where most of them were gassed on arrival.
Vrba, who emigrated to Canada at war's end, published his autobiography in England nearly forty years ago. Yet his and Wetzler's story has been carefully kept from Israel's Hebrew-reading public and appears nowhere in any of the history texts that are part of the official curriculum. As Ruth Linn writes, "Israeli Holocaust historiography was to follow the spirit of the court's policy at the Eichmann trial: silencing and removing challenging survivors from the gallery, and muting questions about the role of the Jewish Council in the deportations."
In 1998 Linn arranged for publication of the first Hebrew edition of Vrba's memoirs. In Escaping Auschwitz she establishes the chronology of Vrba's disappearance not only from Auschwitz but also from the Israeli Holocaust narrative, skillfully exposing how the official Israeli historiography of the Holocaust has sought to suppress the story.
Customer Reviews:
Escaping Auschwitz makes you think and wonder.......2004-09-07
This is not just another book about Holocaust history. Ruth Linn's book, "Escaping Auschwitz, A Culture of Forgetting" presents new facts that have been buried and intriguing theories. We are told of two brave men, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler who successfully escaped from Auschwitz in April 1944. Their personal report led to the first official documentation of this horrific death camp in May 1944. Their report was the first report about Auschwitz that was accepted as credible by the free world. The surprising outcome is that Vrba has indicated that the Jewish Council(Judenrat) withheld the information from Hungarian Jewry. Yet,in May and June of 1944, 437,000 Hungarian Jews boarded the "resettlement trains" to Auschwitz not knowing the fate that would befall them.
As an Israeli academic, Prof Ruth Linn never knew of this amazing escape from Auschwitz. She was most fascinated when she stumbled on this historic fact as an educator. She researched why Vrba's story had been suppressed by the Israeli historic establishment. She challenges us with provocative questions: Did Dr R Kastzner who was head of the Jewish Council make a deal with Adolph Eichman in 1944? Why didn't the Hungarian Jews resist what was happening to them in WW II? Were some of the Jewish leaders willing or unwilling collaborators with the Nazis? Is there a link to this and the mysterious assassination of Dr R Kastzner in Tel Aviv in 1957? Why wasn't Vrba brought to Israel in 1961 to testify at the trial of Adolph Eichman? In this book Linn challenges the Israeli establishment's memory, documentation, and recognition of the Jewish Council in Slovakia and Hungary.
This is a well written description of events that happened in Slovakia and Hungary immediately following the Vrba-Wetzler escape. Many chapters of this book read like an exciting mystery novel while other chapters contain intriguing historic and psychological theories. For those who are curious about WW II, the Holocaust, and Zionist history this book is a fascinating addition to the many volumes that have been written on these topics.
"Escaping Auschwitz" makes you think and wonder. You wonder about the miraculous Vrba escape. You think about how this information was received and handled by the Jewish Council of the time. You wonder whether this information, if released, would have led to more Jewish resistance or contributed to saving more Holocaust victims. However, at the end of the day, we were not there. We were not in the position of the Jewish Council and we don't know how we would have acted. Read the book. You will enjoy the journey. Dr Arthur Dodek, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Owls of the Northern Hemisphere presents the unique collaboration of the distinguished Dutch ornithologist Karel Voous and avian artist Ad Cameron. For bird, and especially owl, lovers everywhere, it is the definitive source of information on the 47 known owl species occurring north of the tropics. And for readers who admire and collect fine bird prints, it offers 50 superb full-color plates portraying an individual of each species.
The descriptions of species are self contained, each combines a general summary with a detailed account. They are based on the most current data available and cover faunal type; distribution; climatic zones; habitat; geographical variation; related species; fossil species; structure, vision, and hearing; behavioral characteristics (songs and calls, circadian rhythm, antagonistic behavior); ecological hierarchy, breeding habitat and breeding; food and feeding habits; movements and population dynamics; and relationship to man.
Highlighted throughout are some of the more controversial aspects of owl taxonomy as well as questions remaining to be addressed and areas that have yet to be researched.
It is the owls themselves, that dominate this fascinating account: from the noisiest and most easily studied Barred Owl to the seldom seen Scops Owl whose call in Japanese folklore denotes the three ratnas or mystical treasures of Buddhism.
There are portraits of the powerful and opportunistic Great Homed Owl, largest of the owl species who - fiercest of all in defending its young against human intrusion - is also the most often trapped and shot, and of the Eurasian Pygmy Owl, who with silky feathers growing to the ends of its toes, can assume the elaborate and expressive postures of a ferocious dwarf or drop like a stone and appear comatose.
In his sobering accounts of man owl interaction, Voous observes that throughout the northern hemisphere reduction in habitat road kills, electrocution, and human predation are insistently encroaching on these remarkable birds. He describes the preferred sites and dimensions of nesting boxes for encouraging species survival.
Karel Voous, is Professor Emeritus at the Free University at Amsterdam and the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam. He is an honorary or corresponding member of numerous scientific and ornithological societies, author of the List of Recent Holarctic Bird Species, and the only nonCommonwealth recipient of the Golden Medal of the British Ornithological Union.
Ad Cameron has been drawing birds of his native Holland since childhood. He attended the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague, and his work has been published and exhibited throughout the world. He now lives in Friesland.
Customer Reviews:
The best owl book in the world.... Ever!!.......2004-05-19
I first bought this book about 12 years ago, and it eclipsed any of my other books about owls or birds of prey. Sometimes the info could me more than is required for the general enthusiast, but at least you have the choice of what to absorb, rather than having to continue to search for answers from other sources. And Oh... the illustrations. The book is worth every penny for these alone. Sadly a recent divorce lost me my copy... the 'ex' claimed it, so I have ordered it again. Only used copies are available as the book is now out of print (criminal!!!), but as this is the sort of book that you care for and treasure, used examples should be fine.
If you love owls, track down a copy of this book and buy it without hesitation!
