Book Description
We are not shy about reporting human rights abuses around the globe. We are much more reluctant to recognize them at home. This book exposes the violations of human rights witnessed daily in workplaces across our country. Based on detailed case studies in a variety of sectors, it reveals an "unfair advantage" in U.S. law and practice that allows employers to fire or otherwise punish thousands of workers as they seek to exercise their rights of association and to exclude millions more from laws that protect their rights to bargain and to organize.
Unfair Advantage approaches workers' use of organizing, collective bargaining, and strikes as an exercise of basic rights where workers are autonomous actors, not objects of unions' or employers' institutional interests. Both historical experience and a review of current conditions around the world indicate that strong, independent, democratic trade unions are vital for societies where human rights are respected. In Lance Compa's view, human rights cannot flourish where workers' rights are not enforced. While researching workers' exercise of these rights in different industries, occupations, and regions of the United States, Human Rights Watch found that freedom of association is under severe, often buckling pressure when workers in the United States try to exercise it. Cornell University Press is making this valuable report, originally published in August 2000, available again as a paperback with a new introduction and conclusion that bring the story up-to-date.

Book Description
In this pioneering volume, Howell addresses the extent to which fictional characters are legally recognized and protected as intellectual property. Through a judicious selection of cases chosen for their bearing on the popular arts, the author reviews the basic legal principles involved--copyright, trademark, unfair competition, and contract law--and analyzes their applications to fictional characters. In addition to tracing the evolution of the law relating to the protection of fictional characters, Howell explores the feasibility of isolating characters and protecting them via stringent copyright and/or trademark laws, addresses character merchandising and the associated legal issues, and suggests legal reforms aimed at protecting the creator. Detailed case information serves both to illustrate the legal principles and actions discussed and to stand as a model for the proprietors of future characters. Divided into two major sections, the volume begins by offering a comprehensive introduction to intellectual property law. Specific topics addressed include basic concepts of property, statutory protection of intellectual property, elements of an infringement action, defenses to copyright infringement, unfair competition, and the application of trademark principles to literary properties. In the second section, Howell analyzes the extent to which the fictional character is legally regarded as intellectual property. She reviews situations in which copyright and trademark law have been invoked to protect the creator of a fictional character, examines cases involving such well-known characters as the Lone Ranger, Superman, and the crew of the Starship Enterprise, and presents an extended analysis of the case of Tarzan. Finally, Howell considers whether right of publicity and merchandising offer additional protection for fictional characters. In the concluding chapter, she offers an analysis of copyright decisions and a proposal for their reconciliation. Both practicing attorneys and students of entertainment law will find Howell's work an important contribution to the professional literature.

Ecologies Of Theater: Essays at the Century Turning
ASIN: 0472097202 |
Book Description
Land/Scape/Theater proposes landscape as a necessary paradigm for understanding modern theater's increasingly spatialized aesthetic as well as its engagement with the cultural meanings of place and space.
Embracing subjects as diverse as the "landscape dramaturgy" of Suzan-Lori Parks, Artaud's trip to the Sierra Madre,Gertrude Stein's landscape theory and practice, Guillermo Gomez-Peña's "border subjects," and Bayreuth and Disneyland as cultic sites, Land/Scape/Theater draws on a broad range of theory, dramatic texts, and performance. All aspects of modern theater, these essays suggest, including the bedrock Aristotelian constituents of plot and character, have a landscape dimension that often goes unrecognized.
With its broad theoretical range and cross-disciplinary reach, Land/Scape/Theater will interest theater theorists and practitioners and cultural studies specialists, including historians of landscape. Theater students, scholars, teachers, directors, designers, and actors will find here a new framework and a new vocabulary for understanding both theater and the larger culture.

Victorian SciFi Game.......2000-11-27
A fun game concerning ship combat in the Space 1889 game series. Space 1889 is a Victorian SciFi game concerning European colonization of the planets in the solar system. A great game for people interested in the period and the history of technology.
The ships are wooden and ironclad ships which float due to the miracle of "lift-wood" (discovered on Mars). If you like Ironclads or Smoke on the Water you find this easier to learn and quicker paced. I am glad to see it back in print.

ArtSpeak - A worthwhile guide.......2005-09-22
I am a docent and at times a docent trainer, and this guide came in very handy when I was preparing for an exhibition on contemporary artists. It is well-written, to the point, and has extensive coverage for a little book!
A Great Resource.......2004-04-07
I'm a BFA student at Virginia Tech heading to grad school and this is an excellent book to teach from, have as a reference, or just thumb through for fun. Simple and succinct while still thorough. It's really an invaluable thing to have for ready info at your fingertips. This book has been part of the curriculum here for Performance Art, Found Object Sculpture, and Installation classes, and everyone in the class universally approves and finds it helpful.
Great book for art history classes.......2000-12-28
Perfect for writing critiques and analyses from all art movements. Great glossary of terms for a beginning art student looking up hard-to-understand words in text books.
Great for art history students!.......2000-12-27
A glossary of art terms. This book is a definite must for those writing analyses of art. It's also good for looking up those tricky terms in your text books. It is filled with artsy terms and illustrations. I used it in all my art history classes.

Customer Reviews:
very interesting book, but............2001-07-18
Although this is a very interesting and useful book, almost of all entries are so-called "the westerners" with a few exceptions ; e.g. Mishima Yukio. And I don't understand the reason why the editors included "Anita Bryant" in the book. I think she is suitable to be listed in "Who's Who in Contemporary Homophobic-syndrome patients". Or the editors meant she also is a kind of "self-abhorrent homosexual" like Sanctus Paulus et Sanctus Augustinus ? I'd like to know the reason, if they don't mind.

Book Description
For centuries the sea has been regarded as a male domain. Fisherman, navy officers, pirates, and explorers roamed the high seas while their wives and daughters stayed on shore. Oceangoing adventurers and the crews of their ships were part of an all-male world — or were they?
In this illuminating historical narrative, maritime scholar David Cordingly shows that in fact an astonishing number of women went to sea in the great age of sail. Some traveled as the wives or mistresses of captains. A few were smuggled aboard by officers or seaman. A number of cases have come to light of young women dressing in men’s clothes and working alongside the sailors for months, and sometimes years. In the U.S. and Britsh navies, it was not uncommon for the wives of bosuns, carpenters, and cooks to go to sea on warships. Cordingly’s tremendous research shows that there was indeed a thriving female population — from female pirates to the sirens of legend — on and around the high seas. A landmark work of women’s history disguised as a spectacularly entertaining yarn,
Women’s Sailors and Sailor’s Women will surprise and delight readers.

Interesting book .......2007-08-26
Great overview of the men that once made their living on the sea and the women that supported them. These women were all important be they; dockside tavern owners, a captains wife, prostitutes or even women pirates. In some places it tries to paint a chronological view but after a few chapters it settles down into more of a professional and social breakdown. This book is also very cool because there is one chapter that clearly and soberly asks the question "Whats happens when you jame a bunch of sexually active guys together on a ship and there are no women." For this chapter alone the book is worth a look.
Overall-Excellent page turner

This book "Seafaring Women" was previously published under the title "Women Sailors and Sailor's Women". It's a great book in either cover, but it is the same one, and Amazon would do well to put in the description that it is a reprint with a new title so as not confuse buyers.
Tons of Information.......2006-02-06
This book is the sexiest and most informative I've read yet about female sailors and women who made their living off of the nautical trade. A lot of myths and misconceptions are explained, explored and put to rest. The author has done an impressive job with this subject and I applaud him for his decent treatment of women who led very untraditional(yet exciting) lives and professions.
Women in 18th and 19th Century Maritime Culture........2004-02-01
Seafaring life in the 18th and 19th centuries has fascinated modern history enthusiasts and captured the imaginations of novelists and filmmakers. In "Women Sailors and Sailors' Women", author David Cordingly explores an aspect of lives spent at sea that has traditionally received little attention: the women who directly or indirectly participated in the maritime lifestyle. What is often thought of as a very male culture was populated with women as well. So who were they? In answering this question, David Cordingly starts in port and takes us on a journey out to sea and back again, discussing the diverse roles of women in the sailors' lives, on land and at sea. These women were the wives, mistresses, and prostitutes of sailors, and some were sailors themselves. The book starts in port with the relationship of prostitutes to sailors, who these women were, and how they came to be. Then we go out to sea with women who disguised themselves as men and served alongside them, including the two infamous female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read. We learn that warrant officers' wives were commonly allowed on warships and captains' wives may have been equally common residents on merchant ships. Both of these circumstances led to some interesting stories, including the origin of the term "son of a gun" and the heroic tale of Mary Patten, who captained her husband's ship around Cape Horn during a violent storm in 1856, saving its cargo and becoming an American hero. Cordingly takes a chapter to address the concept of mermaids and the mythical relationships between women and water. And he explores the legend of the stereotypical sailor who has "a wife in every port". There is a chapter on women lighthouse keepers and their daring rescues. And finally, the book returns to port and to the sailors' wives who await their husbands' return. We learn what they have been doing and how they have fared without their husband's wages. "Women Sailors and Sailors' Women" is recommended reading for anyone interested in the history of maritime culture. It fills in some gaps in the sailors' lives and reminds us that many women witnessed and participated in great naval battles as well as the constant battle with nature at sea. Because a global survey would be too vast, David Cordingly has confined his study to Anglo-American maritime culture in the 18th and 19th century. "Women Sailors and Sailors' Women" is a fairly quick-paced, engaging read, and full of fascinating facts and characters that will entertain anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.
Marvelous!.......2004-01-02
While the sea and ships have been referred to as "feminine", little attention has been given to women AT sea - until now. Cordingly has organized his book as if it were a voyage - beginning with the women left behind (wives, sweethearts and prostitutes), the book then goes on to explore women as sailors - much to my surprise, not an uncommon occurance in the 19th century. Topics and stories include women captaining and navigating, women pirates, women who enlisted (and served) as warriors aboard ships, and of course, the women sailors returned to after a voyage are all discussed in riveting detail. The book is simply marvelous. Recommended reading.

Good for middle schoolers.......2004-01-23
My sons both used this book to help them understand relativity, and they found it easy to read. Chapter 2 (dealing with clocks and simultaneity) is a little difficult, but you can understand it if you read it twice! The rest of the book is fun and informative. Maybe it will motivate my oldest son to become an astronomer and work in the neutrino observatory they hope to build in the old gold mine!
A Mathematician's View.......2003-03-25
I have owned this book since 1984, when I purchased the original edition from TAB Books. I found the approach unique, apparently written from a mathematician's point of view. But I was led to wonder about the accuracy of some of the material in the book, particularly of thought experiments that cannot be done in real life and which therefore cannot be positively verified or denied experimentally. For example, who is going to put clocks all over the solar system and then go to every planet to check their readings? But then, other books do the same thing, for example, asking the reader to imagine riding on a train travelling at eighty percent of the speed of light.
After looking at various mentions of this title around the Web (as a phrase in Google advanced search), I have found mostly positive comments, including one from a mathematician (!) in Alabama and another from an educational association in Arizona. These experts have recommended this book as good reading for their students. One fellow dismissed the book because he turned to a page and found some mention of UFOs, but confessed that he hadn't actually read the book yet.
Gibilisco's approach differs rather dramatically from most other relativity books because it is neither highfalutin nor silly. The style is, for the most part, clear. I think the explanations of simultaneity are a little hard to understand and could be misleading to some readers. Gibilisco could do a better job of explaining the relativity of simultaneity among objects in relative motion. It would be nice to have more discussion about paradoxes associated with Special Relativity. An updated edition could clarify some of these issues and also address the question, "Can anything travel faster than the speed of light in free space?"
Confusion unlimited.......2003-01-05
This book is sadly misguided. The author not only does not understand relativity, but actually promulgates common misunderstandings as fact. For example: he says that even mathematically defined points, such as the point of intersection of moving straight lines, cannot exceed the speed of light. They can. Even worse, he says that there is no such thing as simultaneity in a distributed frame of reference. There is. He says the lack of simultaneity is due to the propagation delay of light. It is not. All these things are covered in any introductory text on Special Relativity. Reading this book will only mislead you. It was clearly never reviewed by a relativity physicist. It's sad that it was ever published.
