Book Description
Faculty unions are an important part of the current higher education landscape, particularly in the public sector. Yet, the rise of unionism among university faculties during the 1960's and 1970's was an unexpected development that clashed with many assumptions about academic life. Amid campus tensions, economic crisis and state political controversies, the faculties of the Universities of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island were among those joining ranks of organized labor during that era. This book follows the documentary record of faculty unionization at these New England universities to explore how and why unionization came about. As the book reveals, faculty unionization can be much more than the simple result of local controversies. When examined in light of the surrounding political and economic environment, a complex picture emerges. On these New England campuses, the process invoked the participation of many actors. Faculties, administrations, boards, state political leaders, and national associations all played a part in shaping the course of events, sometimes in unexpected and unintended ways. Gordon B. Arnold places these events in context, providing a 35-year overview of faculty unionism, and locating faculty unionization within the broader realm of organized labor and the rise of public sector collective bargaining.
Book Description
Being saddled with a terrible supervisor can turn even the best job into a nightmare. Unfortunately, not every boss is the great symbol of managerial perfection one would hope for. In fact, more people than not consider themselves stuck with a "bad boss." But short of remaining miserable or quitting a job, what can be done about it? "A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses" provides readers with savvy, practical advice for coping with managers and supervisors who are mean, incompetent, unethical, and worse. The book includes powerful strategies for not only working with -- but thriving under -- such bad boss types as: * The Great Betrayers -- how to defend yourself against a corporate backstabber * The Know-Nothing Bosses -- what to do when a boss is clueless * The Bad Communicators -- how to respond when a boss is consistently unclear Whether a boss is high-strung, incompetent, or a power-mad tyrant, this book has the solution.
Customer Reviews:
A Survival Guide for Working With Bad Bosses: Dealing With Bullies, Idiots, Back-stabbers, And Other Managers from Hell.......2007-07-15
If you've ever had a job, you've likely come across a bad boss. Bad bosses come in all types from the no-boss and the party planner through the scatterboss and the promises, promises boss to the overloader and the control freak. A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses describes mangers from hell complete with stories of real life versions of these monsters. Each section also includes a What Should the Employee Do section which outlines a number of possible solutions to the problem. A summary called Today's Take-Aways end each section.
A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses is an excellent resource for employees stuck in a difficult situation. Not only does the book remind the reader that he or she is not the only one to have such circumstances but also gives them options which are often difficult to think of when stuck in the middle of a problem. Bosses may also want to read this book as often bad bosses don't even realize their problematic behaviour.
Survival at the office.......2007-04-02
It is a great feeling to know that you are not alone in the jungles of the workplace. Especially when the advice comes from an expert...You learn not to kill the "bad bosses" and how to deal with the problem zone with kindness without burning your fingers. Yet, I still hope someday any kind of pills will be discovered to terminate such "bad bosses" and we will live happily ever after.
Don't buy bad workplace advice!.......2007-02-05
I used the advice in this book to deal with a bad boss and the toxic work environment that was created. In compliance with Amazon's review policy I won't reveal it here. In my case the end result is hostility, harassment, and retaliation. What Scott apparently forgets is that these "bad bosses" will regard ANY challenge (even those advocated in her book) as a personal threat and will use the assets at his disposal (i.e., company assets, discipline process) for retribution AGAINST the assertive employee. And since he IS the boss, he has the full backing of the company, regardless of legality, ethics, or motives. These tactics may work with rational, well adjusted supervisors in employee-focused companies, but in my experience pathological bosses are the rule and not the exception.
Do yourself a favor. If you have a bad boss, find a better job and DON'T buy this book or use the advice contained therein.
Unhelpful.......2006-09-17
I thought this book was filled with cliches and did not find it helpful.
Keep looking this one falls short.......2006-03-26
I was rather disapointed in this book. It appears that Ms. Graham Scott's prefered method of dealing with bad bosses is just to put up with them and keep things as status quo hoping it will all work out in the end. Pretty lame advise in my opinion. I am looking for a book that actually helps me solve problems not just put up with them.
Book Description
Collectively, both authors compared work experiences and found that there are many similarities in behavior in different work places. Many articles have been written about stress at work. These stresses impact the behavior of people and their productivity. Both authors saw the need to write this book to enable individuals to relate to situations they may encounter on a daily basis. Some guidelines and lessons learned are offered to cope with (and laugh at) some of the situations they may experience. Research was done by the authors, and it was found that almost all of the individuals questioned were able to relate to the topics. The book is written for the average person with short sections to enable the reader to put the book down at the end of short chapters. The material for this kind of book is everywhere and begs to be told.
Customer Reviews:
Great for every working person.......2005-08-26
The Survival Guide to Working with idiots is a humerous self help book. It makes light of many situations at the work place and helps you to cope with them. Chapters are short and the book is easy to read, put down, and continue. Everyone will be able to relate.

Book Description
In these collected essays, Timothy Leary explains his belief that humans are morphing into space beings. He describes eight circuits of human metamorphosis, analyzing in depth the consciousness — and its purpose — manifested by each change. Fifteen chapters cover a range of topics from “Spinning Up the Genetic Highway” to “Neurogeography of Terrestrial Politics” to “Twelve Stages of Post-Cultural Evolution.” In each of these insightful pieces the author describes the complicated psychological metamorphosis that precedes the launch of humans into space beings. This collection of Leary’s early work at his imaginative and provocative best had an enormous impact on psychology and the humanist movement.

The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) rating is difficult to earn and rare in the marketplace, which means you're a valuable commodity if you've proven your skills by passing the exam. The CISSP Prep Guide, one of only a handful of books on its subject, does a good job of giving readers a feel for the scope of the test and the style of its questions. It's ideal for use either as a preliminary survey of the CISSP subject areas (the test's publisher and the authors of this book call them "domains") for relative newcomers to computer security, or as a pure study guide to help more experienced professionals zero in on the weak spots in their knowledge. Don't expect to do well on the CISSP exam having only read this book. You'll want to have some practical experience and some specialized reading under your belt.
Ronald Krutz and Russell Vines are good writers and fine teachers; they explain the wide-ranging CISSP domains (which have to do with everything from cryptographic algorithms to fire-suppression techniques to legal principles). They take care to explain potentially unfamiliar terms--there's a good glossary in the back of this book--and employ conceptual diagrams well. However, the answer keys for the sample questions that conclude each chapter aren't annotated and some readers will wish for more references to specialized sources. --David Wall
Topics covered: The subjects covered by the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam published by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, including cryptography, access control, security policy, legal matters, and the physical safety of information, equipment, and people.
Book Description
- This updated bestseller features new, more focused review material for the leading computer security certification-the Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or CISSP
- The first book on the market to offer comprehensive review material for the Information Systems Security Engineering Professional (ISSEP) subject concentration, a new CISSP credential that's now required for employees and contractors of the National Security Agency (NSA) and will likely be adopted soon by the FBI, CIA, Department of Defense, and Homeland Security Department
- The number of CISSPs is expected to grow by fifty percent in 2004
- The CD-ROM includes the Boson-powered interactive test engine practice sets for CISSP and ISSEP
Customer Reviews:
This is the book that will get you pass the CISSP exam!.......2007-07-11
I used the CISSP for Dummies as a first book to get me in the mode and hit this book hard over and over again. It helped me to pass the test on my first try. It has enough details and excellent test questions. I'm not sure about the ISSEP parts as I did not go through it. At $6.99 when I bought it compared to the $26.99 I paid for the Dummies book, this is the best bang for the buck in studying for the exam, no question about that.
Gooddish study guide for this certification.......2007-01-30
Good points:
+Surveys of all areas of the CISSP exam.
+Each area covered in detail with many examples.
+Well written in the usual sober style of Wiley guides.
+Good layout, easy on the eyes and with lots of margin space for notes. Easier to read than the official (ISC)2 guide.
+CD gives over 300 practice questions.
Bad points:
-Typos, one every ten pages or so.
-Some mistakes, or at least areas where I disagreed. (See below for an example.)
-Out of date. (That's not really the author's fault but that's Reality, accept it, what with revolutions happening every six months...)
One example of a disagreement came in a question where we were asked to choose which of four methods was NOT a good way of wiping data from a diskette. I chose "writing data to the diskette several times" but the book gave the correct answer as "formatting the diskette seven times". I disagree. At my office before disgarding a PC, IT wipes the hard drive. They reformat the drive once then they overwrite the entire hard disk several times with random sequences of bytes. Such software is easy to find on the internet and the method is pretty standard.
While there are many challenging concepts and more than a few insights especially in areas where I don't have much experience, I find much to be just plain wrong or at best naive. One big problem is (ISC)2 itself: what you need to know to get their accreditation is wrong. The above disagreement is one example, but there are more: (ISC)2 thinks software piracy is like stealing anything else, when in fact the status of intellectual property is not yet well defined.
Verdict: if you need to take the CISSP accreditation get this book along with the official (ISC)2 study guide, otherwise don't.
Vincent Poirier, Tokyo
Afterword: I underwent the exam last March and passed. I can't talk about the exam's content (as part of the agreement one signs upon taking the exam) but I will make one positive comment: the questions were more relevant and less naive than the study material had led me to expect.
VP, Dublin
Not bad, but the "Official" study guide is better IMO.......2006-11-23
This book is ok, but I think the book sold by ISC2 is much better. I only used this as a "supplement" to the official guide.
There are so many CISSP products on the market and I think most of them are BS (i.e. Shon Harris' $1000 review product). Maybe if you know nothing about security and have the choice of a $4,000 boot camp and the Shon Harris $1,000 package, otherwise, get the official guide (about $60) and spend some time reading it. It comes with practice tests in the back and a small test per chapter (most certification books are like this).
Passed my CISSP Test today!!.......2006-10-12
I received notice today that I passed the CISSP test, and this book was the main source I used for studying. It is thorough without giving you extraneous information you don't need for the test. The writing style is adequately pleasant to get through for a technical book. Having the book in PDF form as well was a really helpful plus.
Thanks, Ron Krutz! I will add that reading one or two other books at the same time will greatly increase your overall comprehension of the material. This test is not about technical details, but showing that you grasp the underlying big concepts in security. I would study a domain by reading three study guides' chapters on that one domain before moving on to another domain. This gave me a great perspective.
Strat
Another Great Guide.......2006-04-27
This is another great guide from Krutz and Vines. I have my CISSP and purchased this one for the ISSEP guide and as a reference.
The first 10 Chapters are for the CISSP with some ISSEP tidbits.
Chapters 11-14 are on the ISSEP. Granted some of it is from the IATF but the IATF is what the ISSEP uses as a reference.
These guys are always a step above and beyond Harris.

Analysis.......2000-09-30
Arna Bontemps delivers an overview that is often overlooked in American history books, the African American migration. Bontemps decribes the hardships and struggles of Africans searching for a better life. To really enjoy the drama and detail of this novel, you must realize the impact that African Americans had on the history of America. I believe that this book gives a great presentation of black americans depicting the theme of hope, with disappointment, and love of life, and the struggle to gain that, any place but here (in the South). Although it is not grand reading material, you will learn a lot.
