      Book Description

This invaluable book studies synchronization of coupled chaotic circuits and systems, as well as its applications. It shows how one can use stability results in nonlinear control to derive synchronization criteria for coupled chaotic circuits and systems. It also discusses the use of Lyapunov exponents in deriving synchronization criteria. Both the case of two coupled systems and the case of arbitrarily coupled arrays of systems are considered. The book examines how synchronization properties in arrays of coupled systems are dependent on graph-theoretical properties of the underlying coupling topology. Finally, it studies some applications of synchronized chaotic circuits and systems, including spread spectrum and secure communications, coupled map lattices and graph coloring.

        Book Description

This book focuses on community-level race relations during the 1919 Steel Strike, when intense job competition contributed to racial conflict among the nation's steel workers. As the Great Migration brought thousands of black workers to northern cities, their lower labor costs generated racially split labor markets in the industrial sector. Further, the discriminatory policies of labor unions forced many blacks to serve as strike breakers during periods of class conflict. As a result, the migration heightened racial conflict and undercut important union organizing initiatives. The 1919 Steel Strike illustrates how racial divisions crippled many American unions, a pattern that helps to explain the demise of organized labor during the 1920's.
No previous studies of the 1919 Steel Strike have systematically compared community processes to determine how local events shaped the strike's outcome. Despite the failure of the 1919 Steel Strike, the varied experiences of workers in different communities reveal much about the causes of racial conflict and the possibilities of interracial solidarity. This study finds that patterns of black migration, local government repression of labor, the organizational strength of local unions, and employers' efforts to inflame racial tension all help to explain community-level variation in interracial solidarity and conflict.

5 out of 5 stars I had to buy it!.......2007-09-22

I thumbed through this at a coffee bar in a bookstore, and I just had to buy it. "Infotainment" is my favorite kind of read!

If you're not the kind of reader who can happily while away an hour or two reading the dictionary, feel free to deduct as many stars as you wish! I, myself, just loved it.

2 out of 5 stars Riddled with Errors.......2003-09-29

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I really DID read this book cover to cover. It took about 45 minutes, so that should be your first clue that this isn't a deep book.

That, by itself, isn't objectionable. After all, this is really intended to be a "bathroom" or coffee table book. However, having read the whole book in one sitting, I was amazed by the number of errors. I was finding mistakes every few minutes.

You would think that the authors of a book entitled, "How to Sound Smart" would be smart enough themselves to proof-read the text throughly. The names of people like Jim Bakker and John Wayne Gacy are misspelled, and the definitions for phrases such as "Hobson's Choice", "beyond the pale", and "Occam's Razor" are incomplete, or just flat-out wrong.

Yes, there are a lot of interesting tidbits, but there's a serious problem. If I was able to catch many errors based on what I know, how many more errors are present that I wasn't able to catch? That is, if I know some of the material to be incorrect, I can't be confidently sure that ANY of it is right. This is the kiss of death for any reference work, serious or not.

The crudely-drawn, pointless illustrations add little to the book. I rarely write negative reviews, but this book deserves one.

        Not recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious, just like Norah Vincent's other writing.......2002-08-22

She deploys many of the tactics written about in her poorly-written articles. In short, the book is neither witty nor particularly well-written. It might impress the pseudo-educated, but anyone with a half-decent BS-ometer will eventually embarrass the person deploying its "tricks."

5 out of 5 stars Commonly used foreign phrases and Western cultural reference.......2002-05-16

hubris, quid pro quo, id est, red diaper baby . . . .

All very common phrases in the English language, but many people do not know exactly what they mean. This book will correct those deficiencies. If you graduated from a non-Kansas High School, you will have heard most of the words and references in this book, although you may not know what they mean. There's enough here that even the most educated individual is sure to learn a few things.

        4 out of 5 stars A cute coffeetable book.......2000-07-28

This book defines about about 250 phrases, many Latin, along with correct pronounciation and examples. I can't imagine anyone actually reading this book cover-to-cover and learning many of the phrases, but you might learn more if you do a page-a-day type thing. For the most part, anyone who uses more than a few of the phrases in this book in daily conversation would look like a pompous jerk, but it's still good to know the definition of the phrases.

All I can say is that if you're serious about film, you're serious about Eisenstein, and in that case, you you should have access to this volume of his theories. Here we get many more diverse sources to Eisenstein's thoughts, as Martin Lefebvre wrote in his extended study for Screen 41.4, one of which is classical rhetoric and ideas of religious ecstasy. Revisiting Eisenstein may now be more important than ever w/ the various newcomers to "filmmaking" in the non-stop emergence of new forms and formats for motion pictures and with them new possibilities to explore and experiment with narration.

you want to spice up your campaign with some frightening acventures? you need new enemies or allies for your players? you just want to play something which adds a little gothic touch to the game? you're interested in werebeasts? want to play a little.... complicated character? then buy this.

the adventures connected with the werebeasts are quite good, especially the case of hilde borganov and her village of wererays, but i find the characters portrayed in this book even more fascinating. they are the cremé de la créme of most of the werebeasts you have ever imagined - there are brutal and bestial ones, there are melancholic ones, sad about what they've become... they are personalities. frightening personalities of course, but i like them.

the book gives the DM quite all the information he/she needs to run a campaign in the domains of dread or any other d&d world (i used one of the characters in a planescape campaign and it fit in pretty good) with some werebeasts. if the players don't think of a party of werewolves as something extremely frightening any more, then you should give them the opportunity to experience the good feeling of facing something extremely dreadful - this book gives you the possibility.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection Of Bloodthirsty Beast-Folk.......2000-11-01

"Children of the Night: Werebeasts" is the third in the "Children of the Night" series, which also includes "Children of the Night: The Created," "Children of the Night: Vampires," and the out-of-print "Children of the Night: Ghosts." "Werebeasts" revolves around people becoming beasts and in one case, a beast becoming a person. It is suitable for use in Ravenloft and in other campaigns, and is intended as a complementary volume to the various "Van Richten's" books. As with others in this series, WereBeasts presents 13 small, expandable adventures, each a story centered around an interesting individual or type of lycanthrope, some being quite unusual.

"Children of the Night" series accessories are a great value, each offering 13 detailed, expandable adventures in a single book. Additional rules are included from the "Van Richten's" volumes: types of lycanthrope (true/born, maledictive/cursed, pathologic/infected), shapechange triggers (symbolic, physical, and other), consequences of change (healing, damage to armor, and more), bloodlust frenzies, and cures.

This volume includes: an assassin who is the evil spawn of a human woman and an elder serpent; a wizard whose "primal serum" creates lycanthropy of any animal species on demand; a dashing nobleman whose "other life" involves drinking blood as a horrific bat creature; a half-elven maiden whose singing career masks a fox's face; an entire ship's crew infected with lycanthropy by their captain, a man under a curse; a hunter with tigerish tastes in human prey; the master of a travelling roadshow who has been cursed by the Vistani of Ravenloft; an outcast werejackal priest; a woman with a scarred throat who is gradually turning an entire village into were-stingrays; a black cat who became a catwere from werepanther wounds; a huge man upon whom religion has bestowed the alternate form of a crocodile; a mad artist whose lycanthropy aids him in his use of a magical relic; and a wild woman, head of an extreme monastic order, who shapechanges into a dire wolf. Excellent and dramatic cover art combines with interior black and white portraits of the usual Ravenloft high quality to add to the general creepiness.

A wonderful collection of bloodthirsty beast-folk, excellent for making your players jumpy and suspicious of anyone they meet. Highly recommended for any AD&D 2nd Edition campaign.

A ton of info, but the writing is hard to read.. They use six paragraphs to describe things that can be explained in two.. It's as if the author is trying to impress the reader with what they know rather than just discussing the material that needs to be learned..

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time on this book.......2005-10-01

I have not written the exam yet. Before deciding on which books to use, I read the reviews, and then checked them for validity.

            I have:-
            -Sybex 70-291 (was given it)
            -MS Press 70-291
-Sybex Mastering Windows Server 2003 (Mark Minasi)
-Exam Cram 2 (so as not to get caught out by silly MS tricks!)

This Sybex 70-291 is horribly lacking. 40 pages on RRAS and 40 pages on DNS.
            Are they for real????

You need to spend a load of time on studies for this exam... working your way through every aspect and click of this server before thinking of paying your exam fee cash. Understanding what you're doing is key to not looking like a plumb when the boss says, "Hey, set us up a secure VPN quick, Jack!"

There's no reason to fail it at all, so don't buy crap books like this one to assist in the failure stats. You have made it this far, so you have the ability to get this down, don't punish yourself by wasting time on something that is filled with verbose gibberish and repetition to fill up white space just so James Chellis and his merry bandits can sell a book. Cover to cover, it's 500 pages of waffle, but regurgitated and put through the machine backwards.

...whilst Mark Minasi's book is 1750 odd pages of "Forget what you've been told by Granny Sybex's late great grandpa, This is how it really works!"

            Your choice though...

2 out of 5 stars Inadequate at best.......2004-10-17

I have about two years of hands-on experience managing a Windows Server 2003 domain in a small-business environment. Recently I decided to pursue MCSA Win2k3 certification in order to learn more about the technology and better fulfill my job responsibilities. I bought a 3-pack of Sybex books for exams 70-270, 70-290, and 70-291 (this one).

The book for 70-270 was awesome; I read it cover to cover in 6 days and took the exam on the 7th. I passed with flying colors (score 860 with only 700 needed to pass). The only objections I had with the book were its many terribly-worded sample test questions (both book and CD) that were too vague to answer. However, the content matched the actual exam very well and I had no complaints after passing.

The sample test questions for 70-290 didn't get any better, but this book was also well-written and matched the exam's content --- for the most part. While taking the exam, I noticed a few questions that I *knew* weren't covered in the book. However, I still passed the test with a score of 811 and I didn't make a big deal about the missing content.

Then came exam 70-291. I devoted a total of 16 days to studying this book because it was more technical than the last two (not more difficult, but more detailed). I earned roughly the same scores on the book's practice tests that I had on earlier books (about 87% - 91%), so I sat down at the testing center rather confident that I would pass without any difficulty. WAM. 20 questions out of my 55 were on subjects that were NEVER MENTIONED in this book (these include DNS Forwarding, Aging and Scavenging, ISA Server, and others). I failed this test with a score of about 640. Because the last two books were so great, I was absolutely shocked by this one's shortcomings and I resolved to reread the chapters on DNS and DCHP just to make sure that I hadn't forgotten about some of the details. Sure enough, the information just wasn't there. I purchased sample tests from Self Test Software and retook the exam to earn a score of 760 (not that great, but more than enough to pass).

I am willing to give Sybex the benefit of the doubt by conceding that it is possible -- or even likely -- that Microsoft changed their exam content after this book was published, or that my test questions were not necessarily representative of an average test. However, I still wouldn't recommend this book to anyone studying for exam 70-291, and I decided to purchase a Microsoft Press study guide for my last (elective) exam on Exchange Server 2003.

            5 out of 5 stars Good coverage........2004-01-12

I used this book in preparation for the upgrade exam (since I already have my Win2K cert.) I've used a lot of Sybex books, and now rely on them pretty-much for all of my studying. This one provided solid coverage in direct, straightforward style. I don't like books that beat around the bush, and so this one met my needs well in terms of updating my knowledge of Windows 2000 Server to Server 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Great study guide for the exam.......2003-12-13

I used this book in conjunction with some practice exams that I bought separately and passed the exam on my first try without any problems. This book is great for learning about a lot of the theory and hands-on type of stuff you need to know for the exam, but it is not an exam simulator. That's what practice tests are for. The previous reviewer must not have understood this. I thought this book did a great job of addressing the exam objectives. Like with the other Sybex books, it follows a standard formula with lots of explanations, screenshots, and exercises that are mapped to the exam objectives on the Microsoft web site. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to pass this exam.

              Book Description

The fascinating tale of one of the most remarkable inventions in human history and its effects on science, myth, religion, manners, and the arts.

Of all human inventions, the mirror is perhaps the one most closely connected to our own consciousness. As our first technology for contemplation of the self, the mirror is arguably as important an invention as the wheel. Mirror Mirror is the fascinating story of the mirror's invention, refinement, and use in an astonishing range of human activities--from the fantastic mirrored rooms that wealthy Romans created for their orgies to the mirror's key role in the use and understanding of light.

Pendergrast spins tales of the 2,500-year mystery of whether Archimedes and his "burning mirror" really set faraway Roman ships on fire; the medieval Venetian glassmakers, who perfected the technique of making large, flat mirrors from clear glass and for whom any attempt to leave their cloistered island was punishable by death; Isaac Newton, whose experiments with sunlight on mirrors once left him blinded for three days; the artist David Hockney, who holds controversial ideas about Renaissance artists and their use of optical devices; and George Ellery Hale, the manic-depressive astronomer and telescope enthusiast who inspired (and gave his name to) the twentieth century's largest ground-based telescope. Like mirrors themselves, Mirror Mirror is a book of endless wonder and fascination.

              5 out of 5 stars Just Pendergrast.......2004-07-28

As he did with his history of coffee, Pendergrast once again grasps the influence of one item in human history and, thus, modern society. His grasp of the scientific phenomennon involvig mirrors, and the importance of the study of light in modern science, the relativisti theory, etc. makes this book a more than complete insight into human history, "Through the Looking Glass".

I value Pendergrast's books for the perspective they provide to history, and the way he manages to make the whole subject entertaining. This book is not only educative in history and science, but also an easy read.

              5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book.......2003-11-20

Mark Pendergrast has a talent for writing about a complex subject and making it both understandable and entertaining. Having read his most recent book, Mirror Mirror, I am impressed with the author's versatility and research capability. In writing about the mirror, Pendergrast has explored its history and use in religion, magic, science, art, space exploration, as well as an item of vanity and self indulgence. He has presented his findings in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. The people written about range from early scientists such as Archimedes and Galileo to the modern researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

The New York Times Book Review, which led me to purchase Mirror Mirror, states that it is the equivalent of a liberal arts education. I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. Give Mirror Mirror a 5-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on Mirror Mirror.......2003-11-18

Mirror, Mirror is a fascinating read not only for those lovers of the technical but also for those more interested in human history--as I am. Pendergrast explains scientific and technical concepts clearly. What I particularly loved about the book--besides learning a great deal about the history of science--was the way he wove in the human story. Pendergrast makes names like Herschel and Newton come alive as real people with distinct personalities. Reading a book of such quality and scope is my favorite way of learning about history and science.

              5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reflection on a Fascinating Subject.......2003-11-18

As an artist and a psychotherapist-in-training, this book appealed to me on many levels. It's a well-researched investigation of the history of mirroring and mirror-making, the mystical and the everyday practical use of mirrors, the psychological dimensions, etc. The story of the importance of mirrors in the history of the telescope, and mankind's resultant ability to investigate the cosmos is comprehensively presented. Dense and technical in places, but fun and insightful in others. Worth the read just to get to the last chapter titled, "Final Reflections: Illusions and Realities".

              5 out of 5 stars A nice addition to a sparse literature!!!.......2003-11-17

As a person somewhat 'expert' in mirror research (see Keenan et al., The Face in the Mirror: The Search for the Origins of Consciousness), I am always on the lookout for solid research on the topic of mirrors. Mark Pendergrast has put together a great book on the topic. This is the most comprehensive title that one can buy if interested in the history of mirrors.

His reserach is pretty amazing. Even though I have researched the topic for years, I still learned a tremendous amount reading this book. It is noted that Mark Pendergrast makes the reading entertaining. A nice surprise.

              Thumbs up all the way...

                  Book Description

Grasslands have figured prominently in our North American heritage. Prairies first provided significant barriers to westward expansion, then offered both economic and sociological opportunity, as well as heartache, for settlers. Many artists have gained significant inspiration from the beauty as well as the harshness of these regions and its biota. And, because of ideal climate and soil conditions, these grasslands have provided the agricultural foundation upon which much of the growth and stability of the United States economy rests. Yet, many see North America prairies as beautiful only when manipulated or exploited--green croplands or manicured park lawns are attractive, whereas native grasslands are "those ugly weeds." In the past, plowing virgin prairie could be easily defended on both economic and sociological grounds. And historically, North American prairies must have seemed threatening in both their wildness and vastness. But preservation of these prairies is now an urgent need. This book describes the ecology of the North American prairie and urges conservation measures to protect the remaining North American grasslands. It provides non-economic arguments for the value of prairies, presents a current synthesis of prairie ecology to facilitate the best possible management, and deftly summarizes conservation and management issues, pointing out the costs and benefits of alternative actions. By approaching its subject from a variety of perspectives, including ethical and aesthetic considerations, the book will appeal to environmentalists and conservationists as well as to ecologists, botanists, and conservation biologists.
