    Book Description

In this book Philip Streatfield reflects on his own experience as a manager to explore the question - who, or what is 'in control' in an organization. Adopting the perspective of complex responsive processes developed in the first two volumes of this series, the author takes self-organization and emergence as central themes in thinking about life in organizations. He focuses on the tension between spontaneously forming patterns of conversation, and intentional actions, arguing that the order of organizations emerges through a combination of collective interaction and individual intentions.

      Book Description

In an age where fluidity and complexity have finally been recognized as an inherent part of human design, it is time we develop moral codes and mythologies, paradoxical (both/and) in nature, that replace the ill-suited, traditional binary (either/or) codes we've always cherished. Copernicus again's Galap – guidelines for authentik lives in agez of paradox – provides such appropriate new beliefs; congruent with our immense and variable potential. Galap will surely startle some into disbelief. But for those ready to awaken to a fuller and more meaningful humanity, Galap will begin to provide the legitimization individuals and cultures need to explore, experience, and engage a most robust experience of the human condition. Copernicus again sets a new standard – a presently, unbelievably high standard – and holy books will never be the same.

Knowing that the Ten Commandments -- a binaric (yes/no) set -- does not fit the fluid and complex world, Copernicus again has created some Electives that do fit our malleable and expandable form. If we used Copernicus again's books for our spirituality, there would be less misery and less killing.

      Book Description

Tumultuous changes affecting corporations have left managers and employees reeling from the shocks and searching for the holy grail of management solutions to set their companies straight. But the techniques-du-jour or programs-of-the-month have done nothing but confuse employees, create chaos in the organization, and cause everyone to lose focus of the true strategic objectives. The key to success is not just some new technique or management trend. It's just not that simple. The high-performance organizations of tomorrow must learn how to deftly balance the tensions and conflicts that challenge the progress and effectiveness of any large enterprise. The Paradox Principles shows managers how to face those conflicts and use paradox as a dynamic tool to create balance and focus within an organization. Lessons learned from executives at over 200 high-performance companies and the collective experience of the Price Waterhouse Change Integration Team show managers how to achieve unparalleled success by better managing the paradoxes inherent in their industry, organization, and strategy. The authors also show managers facing unchartered waters how to: create a high performance organization that is focused and strategically balanced; develop management styles with the best blend of operational efficiency and strategic effectiveness; align the actions of everyone through the use of fewer, more effective, performance measures; manage the complexity and chaos caused by the level of change buffeting all organizations today; move beyond all the hand-wringing about behaviors and beliefs to create a new and positive culture in the organization.

      3 out of 5 stars Simple Lessons.......1999-05-28

This book is a fairly easy read and doesn't have too much of that doctorate, I'm trying to impress you, language. I think this use of the word paradox is becoming a bit too common these days and these authors also seem to force the concepts to make paradoxes out of them. They also throw a person's reading rhythm "out of whack" by throwing in the chapter on Information Technology which clearly doesn't belong in this book. With that said, I will say that there are some good bits of advice and methods which can be used within a business to help change things around. Overall, I think it is worth a look, but you might want to wait for the paperback version.

        Description:
The dynamics and stability of interacting populations in connection to spatial phenomena such as pattern formation and spatiotemporal chaos have recently become a focus of intensive research in theoretical ecology. In this paper, we demonstrate a surprising relation between the long-standing enigma known as Rosenzweig's paradox of enrichment and the formation of chaotic spatiotemporal patterns in an ecological community. Using two different spatially explicit models (a standard diffusion-reaction system and a diffusion-reaction system with cutoff at low population densities), we show by means of computer simulations that transition to spatiotemporal chaos can prevent species extinction in a situation when it would be expected in the case of regular dynamics. The patterns arising in our models are self-organized, and not induced directly by pre-existing spatial heterogeneity of the environment. We also show that the type of the system's response to enrichment essentially depends on the system size and on the rates of eutrophication.

                          Book Description

"A scene so wildly and awfully desolate . . . it cannot fail to impress me with gloomy thoughts" so Robert F. Scott perceived the stark Antarctic in 1905. Yet the environment is more than its physical appearance expectation and subjective response, as much as direct stimuli, play a part in perceptions.

Antarctica traces images of the continent from early invented maps up to Roald Amundsen's arrival. Paul Simpson-Housley approaches Antarctica from the perspective of both sea and land explorers, describing their differing perceptions as created by error and desire. Explorers returned with images of both beauty and terror. Simpson-Housley analyzes their writings in diaries, books and poetry. Developing this theme, and focusing on the realist paintings of Edward Wilson and the symbolic poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, he discusses how artistic images were created from first-hand experience of the landscape, as well as contemporary reports and literature.

The book is basically at the level of an upper level undergraduate engineering or science student. New sections have been added on the use of DNA as an organizing stratagem in self-assembly, silicon nanowires, comments on the new success toward human cloning, the achievement of self-replication in a primitive set of electromechanical robots, recognition in the extra chapters of the acceleration toward alternative forms of nanoelectronics. Additional problems have also been provided.

Wolf explains from the vantage of a physicist what exactly is nanophysics, and what the engineering implications might be. He describes how the size of atoms, at 0.1 nanometers or so, sets a natural lower limit, and how the scale of nanometers lets us see and use quantum phenomena for designing new materials.

A solid background in quantum mechanics would not be remiss, before trying this book. Wolf offers a bottoms-up approach to understanding the various branches of nanotech research, which is currently burgeoning.

John Grisham turns a satirical eye on the overblown ritual of the festive holiday season, and the result is Skipping Christmas, a modest but funny novel about the tyranny of December 25. Grisham's story revolves around a typical middle-aged American couple, Luther and Nora Krank. On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that "for the first time in her young and sheltered life Blair would spend Christmas away from home."

Luther Krank sees his daughter's Christmas absence as an opportunity. He estimates that "a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas," and have "precious little to show for it." So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that "we won't do Christmas." Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank's subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision.

Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how this tight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. Skipping Christmas is Grisham-lite, with none of the serious action or drama of his legal thrillers, but a funny poke at the craziness of Christmas. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

                                Book Description

Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty; they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one, because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences–and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined.

A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.

To all of you scholars out there, or to even just the curious, read 1984 by George Orwell before you read this book (and just for kicks, read some of Plato's Republic, too) and get an eye-opener about where our society just might be heading.

I had never read Grisham. I don't like most of the books in the genre he usually frequents. I picked this up in the library because it seemed so fiendishly clever. I was right. Excellent writer, marvelous plot and a lesson to be learned. You cannot escape your surroundings even though you may dream! HAHAHA.

The movie was a poor version of the book. Alan Alda would have made a much better main character. It was more Alda-ish by far, and more of a Woody Allen scene than a Tim Allen romp. Don't judge the book by its movie.

                                1 out of 5 stars A painfully predictable screenplay.......2007-02-26

As if we needed any further proof that Grisham's a hack, he took a break from writing formulaic legal thrillers to grind out this thinly-veiled screenplay in which a caricatured pair of middled-aged empty-nesters decide to beg out of Christmas. Hilarity ensues with painful predictability.

I really enjoyed this book. A very quick, silly read. Very funny and perfect to read during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

1 out of 5 stars BIG WASTE OF TIME.......2007-01-25

I couldn't get into this book. I liked Bleachers, A Painted House, Runaway Jury, King of Torts, and the Pelican Brief by Grisham but I just didn't care for this one. It's not like his other books at all. It tells of a story of a family who wants to skip Christmas but why? CHRISTMAS is the time to spend with family not poke fun or make light of it. This book wasn't what it was cracked up to be and the story was dumb. Didn't care for it at all.

If you've ever heard the phrase "skipping Christmas," you probably think that whoever said it was crazy. That is exactly how people reacted when the Kranks decided to simply skip Christmas. How can you skip Christmas you ask? The Kranks just didn't buy all the gifts, food, or put Frosty on the roof. Instead they decided to go on a diet and a get a tan. Until they received a phone call from a very unexpected guest, then things really started to heat up. John Grisham was pure genius to write such an absurd idea as he did in Skipping Christmas.
I personally thought the story was a little dull and crazy, but funny toward the end. I'd give it four stars, because getting into it was a little hard and not written for my age group. All adults should read it. It gives you a different perspective on why we celebrate the holidays and put others first. I would say it shows one thing not to do during the holiday season, because it causes too much confusion on everyone's part. Try it and see if you like it, and if you don't you can tell others why it's trouble to simply skip Christmas.

ever written before. This book is similar to "Lampoon's Christmas" with a different twist. A couple bids their only daughter goodbye for a one year stint in the Peace Corps. They decide to avoid all the hastles of celebrating Christmas this year by taking a cruise. If I told you anymore, I'd give it away!! The book is fast paced, funny, ends with a tear, and would be a great gift for anyone, especially those suffering from "empty nest syndrome" for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars CHRISTMAS IS EVEN MORE SPECIAL .......2004-08-07

ALL THE NUIANCES OF THE HOLIDAYS BLARE OUT FROM THIS NOVEL AND MIX WITH REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED READING THIS YOU CRAVE ANOTHER HOLIDAY NOVEL BY GRISHAM.
