Harold Geneen has been a highly regarded observer of the global business scene ever since the 1960s, when he began building International Telephone & Telegraph from a "hodgepodge of little companies" into a multinational $28 billion industrial giant. Now 88, Geneen has teamed with Brent Bowers on The Synergy Myth to lay out his frank views on trendy "flavor-of-the-month" management philosophies, which are increasingly supplanting the old-fashioned values such as hard work and risk-taking that he favors.

6. Performance stands out like a ton of diamonds. Non performance can always be explained away.

13. Uncertainty Will Always Be Part Of The Taking Charge Process
Mr Geneen was about eighty six years old when he wrote "The Synergy Myth: And Other Ailments of Business Today". Mr Geneen stressed the importance of having fun build a business and taking smart risks. He says, "There is no secret, no magic formula. Just the old-fashioned virtues of hard work, honesty and risk-taking". Living off of bread and taff during the great depression, Mr Geneen learned to put himself in the spotlight and risk take, a lesson he said lasted for life. Mr Geneen took ITT moving the company from 700 million dollar to 28 billion dollars. Mr. Geneen talks about how to select a CEO, the optimum role and size of the board of directors, getting out in the spot light, and fighting against failure. Mr Geneen talks about making sure "Democratic Principles" are supported within the company. Decision may not be accept, but the individual should always have a say. So of the fads, Mr Geneen attacks are Reengineering, Synergy, and long term planning. He talks critical and pragmatically about the insufficiencies of each of the topics. His arguments are more his personal biases than concrete arguments. Its more like board room talk about new technology. Under Mr Geneen, ITT made 250 acquisitions. The goal was to achieve 10 percent growth in profitability per quarter. All that matter was the profits, companies like: well-known businesses such as the Sheraton hotel chain, Wonder bread maker Continental Baking, the insurer Hartford and Avis Rent-a-Car. Mr Geneen was very proud of the brake part expansion and profits. The ABC buyout fustrated Mr Geneen as the Justice Department rejection on concerns of monopoly, at the same time the FCC giving their ok to move forward. Mr Geneen would request Nixon to clean up the mess. Fustrated the deal never materialized. He regretted the denial and remorse more heavily as years latter Disney completed the acquistion of ABC. Mr. Geneen's public image also suffered after political scandals involving ITT's subsidization of the 1972 Republican convention in San Diego and the company's influence in elections in Chile. Mr Geneen was afraid that Chile would nationalize his company. ITT was nationalized.
Read between the lines, this is sa subtle business mind.......1998-04-30
Global business, never mind American business has been damaged by the idiocies of "big for bigness sake", dumbsizing, business process engineering and the like. By turning his elderly, but still gimlet eye on the fads, fallacies and foul-ups instigated by the business bodice rippers aimed only at making a fortune for their authors and at the sheeplike behavior of boards of directors who aimlessly follow the trend hyped by people who have rarely had a real job, Geneen does us all a favor.
Certainly he is egotistical, but he has a track record to back it. You don't have to read this book, but if if lead a major business and feel a sudden urge to follow the herd it is a good investment. (and if you don't go for this iconoclast, try Michael Moore wqho says the same things from the opposite side of the tracks.
Tom Lambert - Author High Income Consulting etc......
One of the weakest books I have ever read - What as waste........1997-10-24
The entire value of the book comes in the first few pages when Mr. Greene pokes fun at some common business myths (and that part is reprinted in INC magazine) The remaining 243 pages should be recycled to save the environment. He spends inordinate amounts of books praising himself. This book is a testament to a mediocre CEO more obsessed with building a big company than generating shareholder value. (If you want evidence, check out some WSJ articles)
Disappointing and self obsessed.......1997-10-16
I picked up the book hoping to find a cogent critique of current management fads. Unfortunately I found a personal history or a man who built a conglomerate that is presently in the process of "de-glomerating". This book really has little value in terms of insight into business or management theory.
Should have taken a closer look before I purchased it!.......1997-08-21
Essentially the same material as his first book. The New York Times review of that book pretty much covers this one.
I can't say I'm any more enlightened after reading mostly comments about what the author did, which was great, 20 years ago. However, I was looking for more insight into the reasons business men, intelligent business men for the most part, insist on going for 'buzz' concepts of management that repeatedly are shown to be without merit. Didn't find it in this book. I was left wondering if Mr. Geneen's 'buzz' isn't just another variation that, somehow, I feel I've read before.

The World Without Us
ASIN: 0380975378
Release Date: 1999-11-09 |
Amazon.com
Physicist and science fiction author Gregory Benford says there are two main impulses behind human efforts to communicate with future societies. The first, "High Church," shouts beauty, ego, and awe across the millennia: See how amazing our pyramid-building skills were? The Seven Wonders of the World would fall into this category--if they had lasted. Monuments, cathedrals, tombs, anything that says, "This great object meant something to us." On a much more mundane (and human) level is the "Kilroy" impulse: I lived! You needn't look hard to find evidence of this temporal communication: graffiti is as old as humanity, and latter-day taggers are following in the footsteps of Greek mercenaries (who left their names all over Egyptian monuments, Lord Byron (who carved his name into the Temple of Poseidon), and legions of anonymous ancient scribblers.
So, humans want and are able to communicate (wordlessly and otherwise) over thousands of years. But, asks Benford, can we accurately convey information over millions of years, or longer? We may need to do just that in order to responsibly protect future beings from our current, long-reaching messages--nuclear waste, climate change, extinction of species. Benford was part of a team of artists and scientists trying to come up with ways of saying "WARNING" to humans (or other beings) in the distant future. Deep Time is a fascinating look at the nature of communication and the future implications of things we do today. It's a terrifically intelligent, detailed, and comprehensive long view, with a message sorely needed by short-lived, but brainy, humans. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
Human civilization has evolved to the point at which we have begun consciously sending messages into the far future. How should we communicate who we are, what we know, to asyet-unmet intelligent beings elsewhere in both time and space? Will they be able to decipher what we say? And what information will we leave to Earth's occupants a million years hence? How can we address an unknown destiny in which human culture itself may no longer exist?
Combining the logical rigor of a scientist with the lyrical beauty of a novelist, Gregory Benford explores these and other fascinating questions in a provocative analysis of humanity's attempts to make its culture immortal, to cross the immense gulf that such deep-time messages must span in order to be understood. In clear, crisp language, he confronts our growing influence on events hundreds of thousands of years into the future, and explores the possible "messages" we may transmit to our distant descendants in the language of the planet itself -- from nuclear waste to global warming to the extinction of species.
We are already sending messages into nearby space; in the coming ages we will be able to launch probes accurately to other stars. Our indelible legacy to future generations, or to the next occupants of this planet, is already being constructed. As we begin our incredible journey down the path of eternity, Gregory Benford masterfully calls forth some of the intriguing, astounding, undreamed -- of futures which may await us in deep time.Human civilization has evolved to the point at which we have begun consciously sending messages into the far future. Customer Reviews:
A thought-provoking idea, not completely carried through.......2003-07-21
This book, by a physicist and science fiction writer, starts off well with a philosophical perspective on Humankind's collective attention span. The desire to convey some essence of ourselves, Benford writes, is the great impulse behind deep time messages. But there also is a desire to shape the future, and to use the idea of the future to shape the present. He describes his personal experience as a member of a group advising the Department of Energy on what kind of markers should be used to warn future humans of an underground radioactive waste depository. He then turns to the design of plaques to be attached to spacecraft that will leave the solar system, unfortunately getting bogged down in bureaucratic and interpersonal battles involving NASA officials. Other subjects addressed are preserving a record of biodiversity in a "Library of Life" and addressing human-caused climate change, leading toward "planetary management." These are all good themes, but Benford's conclusion does not propose an overall approach or a more systematic way of addressing our long-term future.
Deep Time/Deep Self-Revelation.......2003-06-11
I very much enjoyed reflecting on the ideas presented in Benford's discussion. The content and organization of the book are not specifically addressed in previous reviews on this site, so for the reader wondering what the book is about, a road map might be useful.
Deep Time has four sections:
(1) Ten Thousand Years of Solitude describes a project in which the author was involved, which addressed how (or if) society can design safe repositories for nuclear waste with effective means of communicating across millenia to people who will not share our culture, technology, or language, "don't go near this place." Past epic attempts to communicate over the millenia and present attempts to preserve computer data for even a few years do not build confidence that this critical message will speak properly to its unimaginably distant audience.
(2) Vaults in Vacuum is a rather darkly amusing discussion of the etched plates NASA sent out on some space missions intended to communicate with whoever finds them about Earth, Sol, and humans. The unintended humor of the political process surrounding their design communicates more to us about human nature than the disks themselves could ever communicate to aliens! The fate of the diamond disk that was supposed to ride with Cassini-Huygens to Saturn is nothing short of hysterical.
(3) The Library of Life is a depressing description of the potentially Chicxulub-scale loss of biodiversity caused by humans in the last few centuries. It argues almost poignantly, perhaps quixotically, for building cryogenically-preserved DNA libraries to store the basic information on biodiversity, so our far descendants, if we manage to leave any, might be able to resuscitate what we are destroying -- "Jurassic Park" on ice.
(4) Stewards of the Earth: The World as Message is a vaguely postmodern discussion of the earth we're leaving behind us for our descendants as a text and what that text reveals about us. The message is not flattering or hopeful. Should human society with its next-quarter or, at most, decades time frame begin to design and effect centuries-long agendas to assist the planet to support us at a high level of technological civilization, our primate cleverness may yet evolve into wisdom and conscious design of what the earth says about us to our long-distant descendants.
I found it boring.......2002-08-18
The concept of public servants trying to communicate messages to a distant future it quite interesting. I found it interesting that even we have lost even the locations of some time capsules even 50 years ago. It certainly had some good ideas.
The main problem I felt was that the writer was trying to write like a science fiction and a philosophical work. It just could not keep my interest up.
However it would make a good project book for someone in a class trying to keep students interested.
2 years..........2002-07-27
It's been around two years since I first read this book, and i must say i reference it to people all the time. the reason: it is so darn fascinating. i really liked how the author put things in context and made me think about media forms and how we transfer data. if i gave you an 8-track tape right now, would you know what to do with it to get the info contained on it? younger folks might not know what it is. they would recognize tape (maybe), but 100 years from now, how many players would be around? the book talks about a project the author was on. a nuclear waste site in new mexico needed to have a way to communicate to humans (or others) in the future that the site is radioactive. since the radiation could last 10,000 years, the message would have to be able to be understood centuries from now. what would the message be like? if you read the book you'll find out! lots of different ideas are kicked around and i just couldn't put the book down. buy it, have fun!
Interesting Topic, but Benford Skims the Surface.......2001-02-12
The first third of the book is interesting and enlightening. Benford discusses his work as a consulting scientist on the U.S. government's plans to secure a nuclear waste despository for ten thousand years into the future. There is a lot of unintended humor because it turns out that perhaps the best approach may be to simply leave the site unmarked! But we all know that will never happen because ther's government money to be spent...
The next section describes work he did for a solid diamond marker medallion that was to fly with NASA's Cassini mission to explore Saturn and put a probe on the largest moon, Titan. This section is somewhat silly, and includes a lot of gossip and innuendo about other scientists and the NASA bureacracy. The whole plan falls apart at the last minute, and naturally, the author of _this_ account is not the bad guy. Common sense tells us that casting a 28 mm diameter diamond disk into the methane sea of Titan probably is not the best use of taxpayer dollars.
The last third of the book is largely envrio-paranoia babble from a scientist who should know better. Benford claims we should try to cryogenically preserve thousands or even millions of species so they can be studied in the future. His rationale is they might become extinct before scientists can catalog them. So how do you preserve something that you don't even know about yet? Simple - you go out to the edge of the rain forest (or wherever) and scoop up buckets of junk and - you guessed it - freeze it! Yes, that is the proposal: buckets of mud, sticks, and poop in liquid nitrogen dewars. Never mind the fact that earlier in the book, he comments how our present state of technology and stable civil institutions might be temporary, and we can expect major disruptions in the near future. What happens if some day all of these freezers are "unplugged"?
He redeems himself in the final chapter by admitting that the Human species is at a point where we will soon be able to take charge of our evolution, and that it may be possible to alter global climate through the application of technology and fix problems like excess CO2 production. The afterword is so beautifully written, it makes you pause and wonder, what happened with the rest of the book?
All told, this book presents some valuable ideas and insight into a subject that few people have considered.

Light and funny, with a bitter aftertaste, the action of Sellevision takes place behind the scenes (and on the set) of a successful television shopping network, where a feminine role model, Peggy Jean Smythe, the married, Christian mother of three, begins receiving suspicious e-mail from a viewer who insists that Peggy's hairy earlobe is obscuring her presentation of jewelry during the broadcast. When Peggy fails to respond to the e-mail, but silently waxes her lobe, the cruel notes escalate, until Peggy believes herself to be suffering from a hormonal crisis that has given her a mustache, a gruff voice, and the manner of a lumberjack. Meanwhile, one of her cohosts, Max Andrews, has been fired for accidentally exposing himself during a children's special, and learns just how undesirable a commodity a penis-baring ex-Sellevision host can be on the job market. The book is an unusually smooth read for a first novel, with six or seven truly inspired lines. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Darkly funny and gleefully mean-spirited, Sellevision explores greed, obsession and third tier celebrity, in the world of a fictional home shopping network. Welcome to the troubled world of Sellevision, America's premier retail broadcasting network. When Max Andrews, the much-loved and handsome (lonely and gay) host of 'Slumber Sunday Sundown' accidentally exposes himself in front of sixty million kids and their parents during a 'Toys for Tots' segment, Sellevision faces its first big scandal. As Max fails to find a job in television, another host, the popular and perky Peggy Jean Smythe is receiving sinister emails about her appearance from a stalker. Popping pills and drinking heavily, she fails to notice that her husband is spending a lot of time with the very young babysitter who lives next door. Then there's Leigh, whose affair with Sellevision boss Howard Toast is going nowhere, until she exposes him on air; and Bebe, Sellevision's star host, who finds Mr. Right through the Internet- if she can just stop her shopping addiction from taking over.

pass on this.......2007-10-08
I love this author however, this fiction novel didn't live up to his previous work. The characters just didn't hold my attention and it lacked Burroughs usual wit and humor.
Highly entertaining.......2007-09-08
With so many reviews on Burroughs' Sellevision, a tale about a gay TV presenter who inadvertently exposes himself on TV, what can one add? Only that I thought from the description it might be a little smutty; but far from it, in fact I found it to be highly entertaining - an hilarious and thoroughly rewarding story. Rewarding as a read, and rewarding in its just outcome. Highly recommended.
Funny and ironic view into the world of TV home shopping.......2007-09-07
In this witty look inside the world of TV home shopping, Augusted Burroughs is both clever and mysterious. Not only do you get a look inside this bizarre world, but also deeply into the colorful characters who live in it.
As the novel that then launched the 3-part memoir series by Augusten Burroughs, I recommend reading them all. You will laugh your head off in some schenes, yet be wide open in horror and amazement in others. I recommend them highly: Running with Scissors: A Memoir, Dry: A Memoir, Magical Thinking: True Stories. Take them all to the beach!
A Great Book!.......2007-09-03
I loved Sellevision! I saw the author speak in Boston last year, prior to reading any of his books. This was the first one I chose to read, and I certainly don't regret it at all! The book will really make you check twice next time you find yourself channel surfing and pass QVC or the Home Shopping network... It's amazing how the world of the main character falls apart so fast, and from such a high altitude. Enjoy this book, and read it a few times.
HILARIOUS!.......2007-09-01
I seriously had never watched more than 5 minutes of QVC or HSN in my life; this book compelled me to do so after I read it.
What a hilarious and accurate portrait of materialism and celebrity in today's culture! Even better, the characters were fairly multi-dimensional. Considering it's a humor book, the characterizations were much better than I would have anticipated. The author did a great job explaining many of the characters' thought processes. This is as good as the laugh out loud writing and political commentary of Carl Hiassen books. I look forward to reading more fiction from Mr. Burroughs.
Just plain fun.

The Maharshi and His Message

Customer Reviews:
Sage Paul Brunton.......2002-02-12
Paul Brunton is one of the greatest sages recently produced by the West. I pair him with Plotinus. His books should be studied, more than read. "The Quest of the Overself", however a great book, is just a a starter to his later developed concept of mentalism (akin to Bishop Berkeley's philosophy but more in the line of the Upanishads and other Christian esoteric teachings). The reader is advised to continue to "The Hidden Teaching Beyong Yoga", and then "The Wisdom of the Overself". After that Brunton wrote "The Spiritual Crisis of Modern Man", and literally went into seclusion in Switzerland until his death at the age of 81. He left thousands of written pages to his disciple Anthony Damiani (deceased), who had sent Paul Cash (alive and running the Paul Brunton Philosophical Foundation and Larson Publications), to help Brunton in his last days. All his later writings are in "paras" (terse paragraphs, similar to Sutras).
What else to say? Paul Brunton traveled and experienced the spiritual path. His message is universal, however he had tried to bring together East and West, it is above and beyond geographical locality. I respectfully and gratefully bow to Him!
Further Insight into Self.......2001-06-05
It would be appropriate to point out that one needs to read and apply the teachings of Paul Brunton's earlier book `The Secret Path' before one can fully appreciate this book. Paul Brunton attempts to bring the eastern methods of attaining oneness with God to the western world using techniques that are appropriate in this day and age. The eastern methods of renouncing materialism and other worldly temptations are no longer practical in this day and age.
The author expands on the teachings provided in the book 'The Secret Path', which I feel would be greatly helpful to the beginner. He devotes individual chapters that give greater detail to the analysis of physical self, emotional self and intellectual self. He also provides additional techniques to help the meditative process that were missing (for a reason) in his earlier book. Though I have read various books, the bible, books by Rudolph Steiner, books about Edgar Cayce's readings, and come across the term `I AM', this was the first book that actually gave me an explanation that made sense to me.The chapter `The Overself in Action' is a chapter that I hold especially dear to my heart. It describes the gradual changes that one will experience, some of which I can attest to. It brings new meaning to many of Jesus's words in the bible.
For me this book was a great escape..........2000-05-11
Following this guy around on his spiritual journey was both riveting and calming at the same time. I think he exaggerated some experiences at times but that did not detract from the more personal & compelling passages. The author is very sincere in his quest and his writing style brings life to the amazing people he meets and writes about. The detailed references made to that particular time in the world make the book even more interesting. His exchanges with his final master the maharshi are partcularly fascinating and impart timeless wisdom. I really enjoyed this book - it was charming to read and a great antidote to my usual cynicism.

Telemetry Systems Engineering (Artech House Telecommunications Library)
ASIN: 0849310946 |
Book Description
Telemetering systems and applications have moved far beyond the space flight telemetry most people have heard of to cutting-edge uses across a broad range of disciplines, including industry, medicine, and meteorology. To fully understand and participate in the acquisition of data this technology makes possible, scientists in these fields along with engineers new to telemetering require some background in the concepts, hardware, and software that makes the technology so valuable. Introduction to PCM Telemetering Systems, Second Edition summarizes the techniques and terminology used in sending data and control information between users and the instruments that collect and process the data. It gives an overall systems introduction to the relevant topics in three primary areas: system interfaces; data transport, timing, and synchronization; and data transmission techniques. The topics addressed include sensor characteristics, user interface design, data filtering, data framing, statistical analysis, telemetry standards, time code standards, modulation techniques, and radio propagation. To reinforce understanding, each chapter includes exercises. Rather than focusing on design specifics, which can change so rapidly with evolving technologies, the author centers his discussions on concepts and standards. This edition incorporates the latest standards, LabVIEW-based examples of telemetry and command processing, and simulations using multiSim and Commsim.

Customer Reviews:
I wonder?.......2004-12-07
There is a reference to my GT-INDEX in 2nd edition, at chap. 13/Accuracy assessment. However, my GT-Index is not a so-called chance corrected accuracy index. It is the first and only index for measuring the identifying power of classifier. GT-Index is an estimate of the CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY of CORRECT CLASSIFICATION for a given Ground Truth category by RS classifier.
I critized the use of so-called "chance corrected accuracy indices" such as Kappa, Tau etc. by 2 letters to editors in 2002 (PE&RS, Feb. 2002 and RSE, Sep. 2002).
I did not have a chance to see it the 3rd yet. I wonder how this
issues and my GT-INDEX are handled in this edition.
If these issues are not considered I will give only 3 stars, but a correct discussion of them will surely make 5 stars. So, my staring is tentative.

A complete giude to Remote Sensing Practices and Techniques.......1999-08-23
"Introduction to Remote Sensing" by James Campbell covers Remote Sensing, past and present, from one end of the spectrum to the other. Head of the Geography Department at Virginia Tech, his book shows all of the new technology and image processing required for todays sensors. It has excellent illustrations and charts to get the point across easily for a very difficult subject. Complete and up to date, Campbell discusses the new wave of remote sensing, image classification, plant sciences, earth sciences, gps, hyperspectral data, the history of satellites, radiation and cartography. And most of all, how to apply it accurately.
