5 out of 5 stars Ride the back step of RESCUE 1 of ever busy Baltimore City.......1998-07-11

Pull your helmut strap tight and hold on for your life as RESCUE 1 tears through the streets of Baltimore in a mad dash to save lives. This account of actual responces of RESCUE 1, will give you a feel for what the fireman of Baltimore City face on each tour of duty. Bill Hall spins a yarn in this exciting and very realistic narrative. It has many fireground and rescue scene stories that are written in a way to peak the interest of all-- from the fire buff to the veteren smoke eater. However, this is not your typical fire department book telling one fire story after another until they all run together in the readers mind. Writing such as this robs these accounts of their excitment and adrenaline. And that just aint Bill Halls style. "Turnout" instead chooses to highlight the "unusual" runs that fireman face everyday. Some are funny, some are downright sad, but thay are all extremely interesting and all are true.

    Book Description

"Just when you think you've read all about managing diversity and you've concluded that there is nothing new to say, Patricia Arredondo's book offers a fresh, insightful, and helpful blueprint for beginning and moving forward with a diversity initiative. Successful Diversity Management Initiatives not only outlines specific steps for a managing diversity process but also discusses the rationale for procedures, identifies potential roadblocks, and explores how barriers could be managed. Patricia Arredondo gives specific examples based on her research and her experiences within organizations so that the reader obtains an integrative and systematic perspective about the issues involved. Reading this book is essential for all management educators, organizational change teams, and consultants in the field interested in getting up-to-speed about the issues. Also, managers and executives who are engaged in gaining competitive advantage through the talents and abilities of the changing workforce and knowing about the needs of their diverse customers, will gain insight into the very real factors affecting their organizations." --Anna Duran, Ph.D, Principal, Anna Duran & Associates & Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Business, Columbia University "In this book Dr. Patricia Arredondo really captures the kind of experiences we have had as to what works and what doesn't in shaping a diversity initiative. Her concrete suggestions provide a very useful road map leading to a successful diversity initiative." --William Watkins Jr., Executive Vice President, and Director of Economic Development, Narragansett Electric Thousands of organizations are beginning to address the issue of workforce diversity management. This important new book helps answer questions typically raised by these organizations as they face diversity-related change. Why should we do this? How will we know we are being successful? What kind of change can we expect? Successful Diversity Management Initiatives presents specific phases and steps to help plan, direct, and manage strategic organizational development. Serving as a developmental model for change, this model emphasizes on-going evaluation and clarification during each phase and proposes a prototype for measuring both qualitative and quantitative results. Vignettes based on organizational experiences are used to demonstrate how particular steps in the model occur and how they hold generic value. Intended for practical application, the book is supported by case examples, summaries at the end of each chapter that include a checklist for organizational self-assessment, models, and a glossary. Successful Diversity Management Initiatives is appropriate for professionals who have responsibility for designing and implementing programs as well as graduate students in organizational development, industrial psychology, and human resources.

        Book Description

Few chemical compounds created by man have caused greater controversy than organophosphates. Conceived as insecticides, they have also been developed to become the most feared of chemical weapons. The control of vectors of diseases from which millions die or are disabled is heavily dependent on organophosphates, as are efforts to maintain food production in the face of uncontrolled population growth, diminishing arable land and the possibility of global warming. As the toxicity of organophosphates is non-specific, it has caused ill health and death in man, and has contributed to adverse ecological effects.

                      Description:
Organophosphorus pesticides and pyrethroids are widely used in German agriculture and residential settings. Their occurrence in human biological samples can be used as an indicator for the exposure of children to these compounds. Using multivariate evaluation the routes of exposure can be identified. In the pilot study of GerES IV, metabolites of pyrethroids and organophosporus pesticides were analysed in urine of children aged 2-17 years (n=396 and 363). The 95th percentiles for the metabolites of the pyrethroids in urine were: cis-DCCA 0.74@mg/l, trans-DCCA 1.7@mg/l, DBCA 0.52@mg/l, F-PBA <0.1@mg/l, and 3-PBA 2.4@mg/l. 3-PBA was detected in 90% of the samples. The 95th percentiles for the organophosphorus metabolites in urine were: DMP 118@mg/l, DEP 20@mg/l, DMTP 124@mg/l, DETP 11@mg/l, DMDTP 11@mg/l, DEDTP <1.0@mg/l. DMTP was the metabolite most frequently detected in the samples (90%). Based on the metabolites analysed in urine the exposure to organophosphorus pesticides is mainly influenced by age, consumption of fresh fruits and fruit juice, living in an urban area, and season. A rough estimation revealed that the ADI values for organophosphorus pesticides might be exceeded. However, these results require further exploration. The exposure to pyrethroids is influenced by age, sampling location, consumption of boiled vegetables, and the use of biocides indoors at home. In addition, a significant correlation between permethrin in house dust and the metabolite concentrations in urine could be observed. Thus it seems likely that ingestion of house dust contributes to children's exposure.

                                      Book Description

This book presents a self-contained account of the exact solution of the Hubbard model in one dimension. The description of solids at a microscopic level is complex, involving the interaction of a huge number of its constituents. It is impossible to solve the corresponding many-body problems, although insight can be gained from analysis of simplified models. An important example is the Hubbard model, which describes interacting electrons in narrow energy bands and which has been applied to a diverse range of problems.

The description of solids at a microscopic level is complex, involving the interaction of a huge number of its constituents, such as ions or electrons. It is impossible to solve the corresponding many-body problems analytically or numerically, although much insight can be gained from the analysis of simplified models. An important example is the Hubbard model, which describes interacting electrons in narrow energy bands, and which has been applied to problems as diverse as high-Tc superconductivity, band magnetism, and the metal-insulator transition. This book presents a coherent, self-contained account of the exact solution of the Hubbard model in one dimension. The early chapters will be accessible to beginning graduate students with a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. The later chapters address more advanced topics, and are intended as a guide for researchers to some of the more recent scientific results in the field of integrable models.

                                        Book Description

Hello. My name is Robert, and I haven’t been dead for sixty-three days now.

If he hadn’t bought those crummy towels, Rob would be six feet under. But his poor shopping sense accidentally set off a convoluted chain of events that meant he lived when all those others died in the pub explosion. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the ugly towels that saved his life. Perhaps it was some other random action, some other small movement that was the utterly trivial yet vitally important factor. And that’s the real problem.
Now, with his wedding fast approaching, Rob suddenly finds himself paralyzed with indecision–about Every. Little. Thing. He just can't be sure which seemingly innocuous choice will mean the difference between life and death: Should he wash the fork or the knife first? Should he step out of the shower with his left leg or his right leg? Red sweater or blue? One thing is certain: His fiancée, Jo, is at her wits’ end.
To save his relationship and his sanity, Rob embarks on a quest to find out why he’s still breathing. When he meets up with others who have had similar lifesaving near misses, he figures the answer must be close. But fate may just catch them yet, for Rob’s search to understand why he’s still alive might well turn out to be the very thing that kills them all.

Filled with the barbed and sparkling dialogue that made Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About a cult hit, Mil Millington’s Love and Other Near-Death Experiences is a hilarious existential romantic comedy about second guesses and second chances.

                                        2 out of 5 stars I wasn't expecting much, and I was still disappointed........2007-05-15

I bought this book on a whim after laughing my way through parts of Mil Millington's website, www.thingsmygirlfriendandihavearguedabout.com. When it arrived at my home two weeks later, I grimaced at the hasty purchase, put it on my shelf, and left it there for about a year.

A couple days ago, I picked it back up. How lovely, to now have wasted both my money and my time.

Millington's knack for spurts of hilarity is demonstrated by the anecdotes on his website. Unfortunately, his attempt to maintain this humor throughout a novel is strained, tense, unsuccessful. He delivers cheap one-liners that are generally followed by a hollow Ba Dum Cha! and little laughter, and his 'funny scenes' often evoke naught but the unpleasant aftertaste of dissatisfaction. Furthermore, although I can appreciate absurdity in plot (Shakespeare sure pulls it off), there is little to appreciate in Millington's random and apparently haphazard plot developments. At times he appears stymied by his own characters. 'What to do with them now? Aha, let's have Rob kiss Elizabeth! They'll have amazing sex! What a splendid turn in events! I bet my readers will never see it coming! Perhaps because I never saw it, either! Yes, it's all clear now. Rob fell in love with Elizabeth at some indeterminable point. Rob isn't sure when. I'm not sure when. My readers likely won't be sure when, either. That means they'll never expect this. Wonderful!' (This wouldn't be so frustrating if Elizabeth weren't such a brilliantly created and delivered character up to this point. Millington gets it so right, and then goes so, so, so wrong.)

Millington's plot developments often don't make sense. Rob suddenly loves Elizabeth. Elizabeth suddenly loves Rob. The characters are pursued and attacked by fundamentalists. No, a girl crazy with grief. No, she just hates the English.

Millington doesn't create one cohesive puzzle, where the pieces fit into a cohesive picture. Instead, he forces pieces to fit where they don't belong, and, what's more, he adds in pieces from entirely different puzzles at leisure.

The result is a below average book, successfully funny at times, unsuccessfully at others, with a plot that initially suggests potential, but ultimately flounders under the clumsy care of the author.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-01-10

If you like a razor sharp British wit, then this is the book for you. I can't recommend it highly enough.

                                        5 out of 5 stars hilarious!.......2007-01-02

Very smart and funny. This book made me laugh out loud, many times. The plot is very original, also, but what really sets this author apart is his wittiness. Thoroughly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars wow- this title fits the name.......2006-07-10

I enjoyed Mil's website and one of the first books "Things..." so I was really interested in this one. It is a much different read than the previous book since the main character actually has a purpose this time around. While there's definately the same burst out laughing humor, it's a different kind of book entirely. Mil definately experiments with a lot of different kinds of characters in this book and uses their differences and similarities to carry along the quest. All in all, it was a quick read; I was entertained. Worst part was that I was mildly annoyed at the vulgarity of the one character Elizabeth - it was amusingly balanced by her voluminous lexicon! But hey, that's the British - err... English. : )

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious, but Slightly Slight.......2006-06-30

I absolutely loved Millington's first two novels, and I have to say this is a bit of a step down in quality. The razzle-dazzle writing, featuring snappy one-liners and hilarious repartee is all there, however, the framework just isn't quite as good and is unfortunately coincidentally similar to Nick Hornby's last book, A Long Way Down. The protagonist is Rob Garland (a name also a little too close to High Fidelity's Rob Fleming), a 30ish late night jazz DJ who's having problems getting psyched up about his impending wedding (elements which also bring to mind High Fidelity's Rob). It seems that two months ago, he cheated death by being late to an appointment in a building where an accident killed all inside. Since then he falls into paralyzing bouts of indecision, based on the premise that one's life can turn on the most inconsequential of acts.

When his fiancee sits him down and tells him he must cure himself before they get married, he takes the plunge and goes on an quest to sort himself out (again, rather like High Fidelity's Rob). This rather aimless quest involves him teaming up with others who have cheated death. First he meets a young American soldier who wasn't blown up with some buddies in Bosnia, and now appoints himself Rob's facilitator. Next is an the world's most acerbic woman, a suicidaly depressed English teacher in her late 40s who stepped out to get smokes while her Bulgarian hotel burned down in the middle of the night. Finally, there is a beautiful Welsh Wiccan woman who warns Rob about an evangelical Christian sect who is targeting those who've undone God's will by cheating death. The dynamics of this quartet of exceedingly different people is unfortunately similar to A Long Way Down, although Millington writes in a much more laugh-out-loud-funny style.

The story rattles along at an increasingly frantic pace, which helps to disguise the relative thinness of it, and gags and humor are about all that holds it together. Millington does snappy dialogue and nasty humor better than just about anyone, and it's here in spades. Every character (aside from the American of course) oozes killer comebacks and hilarious one-liners. There are also some of the funniest -- though not explicit -- sex scenes I've read. As in Millington's previous two books, there's a kind of melancholy romantic spirit underlying the entire enterprise which makes it somewhat sweet and hard not to like.
