Hesh Kestin's book was given to all Computer Associates employees when it was published. It is a look at a company that has a fairly strange internal culture. There is a breathless, tabloid quality to much of the writing, and you will not find much analysis here. On the other hand, it is a more measured source of information than the occasional article and postings on various chat and/or message boards.

Rarely have people outside the computer industry heard of Computer Associates, "CA", even in the tech-hyped investment community. Even in the software industry, many are unaware that it has been in the top 5 software companies by sales for many years.

This book, written in the early 90's provides a snapshot of how CA's management has created a specific corporate culture, very different than the typcial fast-moving software company.

Some points that were of interest to me:

1- The company growth is largely through acquisitions.

2- The company is an East Coast software company, not a California or Austin based company.

3- The company has been in business since the 70's.

4- The founders are still the managers and they still use the same basic business philosophy that they started with.

The book is brief and somewhat dated, but I think it provides an insight into a unique part of the technology industry. If you have read books on more prominent companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Intel, this is a good book for expanding your view of successful technology companies.

This is the first book to cover Holocene geology and geomorphology of the entire 8,500 kilometers of the Brazilian coast. It is aimed at third and fourth year undergraduates, post-graduate students, scientists and managers. It characterizes the coast in terms of holoecne geology, geomorphology, oceanographic conditions and the location of the barrier types. Separate chapters outline the types of barrier in each state, beginning in the south and proceeding to the north. Special emphasis is placed on the strecthes of coast where the detailed morphology and stratigraphy of barriers has been previously determined.

To date the Brazilian coastal barriers have been largely ignored by the intenational community, especially by north American authors and scientists who generally concentrate on barrier islands. However, the Brazilian coastal barriers display a much wider range of types than is generally assumed. The biggest and most spectacular dunefield barriers in the world exist in Brazil although hitherto completely unknown.

This volumes provides a wealth of information on barrier types, evolution and dynamics . It furnishes managers, biologists and botanists with much needed geological and dynamic background of the evolution, functioning and ecosystems of holocene barriers along the entire Brazilian coast.

Absurd and funny but locking focus.......2007-09-27

It's easy to imagine Homer Simpson cast as Schwartzwelder's bumbling hero Frank Burly. But what the author is trying to accomplish here is more than just a novel-length Simpsons episode. The result is often funny but lacking a solid focus. Burly changes his mind and purpose whenever it suits the joke, and he's an impossibly bad detective. "Sometimes my clients have to explain their problems to me more than once. I don't charge them for that. It's part of the service, I figure. If the case is really complicated, I might ask a smarter detective, or the guy who runs the elevator, to sit in and simplify the whole thing for me."

The story does have a point, however, and somewhere along the way you'll recognize loose ends being tied up, but it's all so silly and absurd that it seems to be trying too hard.

You will laugh, or at least find this book amusing, if you don't laugh out loud normally, just remember it's not the simpsons, just a guy who wrote for them. and with good reason, It's short. but with your "Busy" lifestyle and the many volumes of harry potter you've yet to finish you could fit it in.

Either way it's a nice read. if you can find it check it out.

John Swartzwelder's book is so funny I think I passed out at one point. Frank Burly is a total klutz and the story is insane, a tramp who was a millionaire, wakes up one morning in a box hires Burly the worst detective in town to found a statue and he pays him with blank cheques and wrappers, then Burly finds out about Groggins' time machine and he gets stuck in 1941 oh no I've said too much.

If you like "The Simpsons" you'll loves this amazing book and it's sequals.

This book has some truly inspired humour, and a crazy plot line that doesn't really need to make sense. I think that sometimes it can be a bit clunky and the humour doesn't translate as well as if someone were actually saying or doing these things. I think "How I conquered your planet" does a much better job of both storytelling and joke telling, as it flows more naturally as a book. Still, I would recommend this book, if only to introduce you to Frank Burly and his protective layer of fat.

Offers several points of view.......2001-01-12

This is not a book of one historian's view on past events, it is a collection of mostly firsthand accounts written by people who were experiencing the event at the time. The editors write a brief introduction to each chapter to fit it into the "big picture" and then allows the writer to tell his/her story. This approach was a much better way to hold my interest than it would have been to read one person droning on and on in the same writing style from front cover to back cover. The material stays fresh and interesting, and the firsthand accounts of events as they happened really hit home.

Summer Fun!.......2005-11-30

We got one of these books as a gift and then it was so battered that I am buying another for this summer. We have a pool in our back yard and when the kids get tired of swimming, we open the book and experiment. We have even taken it to my mom's lakeside cottage and used it there. My kids love it and I love it because theya re having fun LEARNING!

POOR SCIENCE ?????.......2005-09-16

I really hate to say it since I have a couple of this series of books, but I have to wonder from where the scientific information was derived for Science in Seconds at the Beach. I was looking through the book searching for an activity to do at our next beach outing and came upon the "Young Rays" activity (p.25). It asserts that rays lay leathery egg cases that you may be lucky enough to view in spring attached to seaweed. It also says to see the drawing...but the drawing just shows a stingray swimming over seaweed with no egg case to be found. So...being curious, I thought I'd look up what it would like on the internet. I was disappointed to know that from what I can tell the book is just wrong. I found several references to sharks and other types of skate fish laying these "mermaid purses" but stingrays actually give birth to the baby rays. The reproduction cycle is very interesting and unusual...worth looking into actually, but the book is, to put it mildly...inaccurate. So...if you are lucky enough to see a mermaid's purse, it's not from a stingray!

This makes me very leery of the rest of the information in this and other books by Jean Potter. I still gave it two stars, because many of the other activities, while none are profound, would still be enjoyable for a child. But I guess I won't be purchasing any more of this series, and will now feel compelled to do my own research before presenting most of it to my children (which will also transfer to some of my other science books, particularly those without references/sources listed). You can still give your child a learning experience by having him or her research whether Mrs. Potter's info is accurate!

Fairly disappointing.

FUN AT THE BEACH.......2002-06-07

We bought this book at the beach and could not believe how much more fun the beach was. We learned things that were new and VERY interesting about the ocean and the life that surrounds it. We take this book to the pool and also do experiments. This book is great to teach children easy science theories with water and in places where children play in water. We use it at home and on vacation. Love it!

A MUST FOR THE BEACH.......2001-03-29

When we pack for the beach, this book is the first thing we put in the suitcases. Our children have used this book for two summers and they never tire of it. In fact, my husband and I LOVE the b ook as well. We have learned so much about the beach. It is a great book for at home experiments with water as well, but we save it for the beach!
