4 out of 5 stars Interesting & true.......2004-06-22

An interesting approach to a harrowing problem. It sucks to work in the hostage held kind of workplace because there seems to be no way out. This book is an inspiration for people to take a realistic look at their potential and to believe in themselves. The simple style takes a situation that seems so complex and simiplifies it in a way that kindergardeners can understand. The problem really isn't so unsolvable after all is it?

5 out of 5 stars Reality TV.......2004-04-13

This book is like reality TV. No facades. Just the grim truth of working frontline and middle management. Much success to the author and her future projects.

4 out of 5 stars definitely hits the spot.......2004-02-29

This book was an inspiration to me because the author immediately connects with her readers. She shares her own experiences but is able to keep an unbiased perspective by not putting all the blame on the five-s. In spite of her education and background, she makes the reading painless to those who are not necessarily readers. The book is humorous and sheds light on some very real problems. It goes where many dare not to go, that is into the heads of the frontline and middle management. I hope her other books come out soon.

4 out of 5 stars Way to go!.......2004-02-11

I think this book is one of the best I've read in a long time because it brings out the thoughts and feelings of those on the frontlines. Most books tell how to be a good employee or how to grow but the real tools of recognizing that some leaders don't and won't let you grow, but you can do something about it anyway are never given. This book tells you what the issues are and gives you the tools and motivation to make changes for yourself. After all the motivational books I have read, this one has been the most inspriring to me. This is probably because the author shares her own dilemma and lives to tell about it. In other books, professional advice is given from people who appear to have never really experienced the dynamics that this book talks about. That is leaders who deliberately hold people back and do their best to make them look bad or just plain not good enough. THe humor that this book offers lightens the mood. I really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars GOT WAITIN' FOR SOME CHICKEN?? What great insight!.......2004-01-11

Deaton-Harris has put status quo management down for the count. Anyone who reads this can see those people in their own company. It's like watching a movie and saying "oh, they remind me of so and so." Only this book is better, it gives us that management edge - "insider trading" if you will. This is mandatory reading now for all my new hires. Best money I ever spent. This is my "second Bible" and I carry a copy with me at all times. The humor and insight are great, unfortunately, some of it exposed my own shortcomings. Corporate management is clogged with people who never have to worry about being a "has been" - because they are wasting all their time and energy on being a "never will be". Looking for your next book.

Book Description

Bond markets differ in one fundamental aspect from standard stock markets. While the latter are built up to a finite number of trade assets, the underlying basis of a bond market is the entire term structure of interest rates: an infinite-dimensional variable which is not directly observable. On the empirical side, this necessitates curve-fitting methods for the daily estimation of the term structure. Pricing models, on the other hand, are usually built upon stochastic factors representing the term structure in a finite-dimensional state space. Written for readers with knowledge in mathematical finance (in particular interest rate theory) and elementary stochastic analysis, this research monograph has threefold aims: to bring together estimation methods and factor models for interest rates, to provide appropriate consistency conditions and to explore some important examples.

4 out of 5 stars A timely monograph on mathematical aspects of HJM models.......2002-08-02

The class of arbitrage free interest-rate models introduced by Heath, Jarrow and Morton in the 1980s has become the standard mathematical framework for interest rate theory since. In the recent years many researchers have approached HJM models from the viewpoint of infinite dimensional stochastic analysis, viewing them as evolution equations in the space of forward rate curves.
This monograph, which is based on the PhD thesis of its author at ETH Zurich, contains a rigorous mathematical presentation
of this point of view on HJM models plus a detailed discussion of the so-called "consistency problem": when is a given parametric family of forward rate curves invariant under an evolution specified by an HJM model?

Chapter 2 "Stochastic equations in infinite dimensions" is interesting in itself as a minimal and economical introduction to this topic without needlessly complicated formalism.
For example the infinite dimensional Wiener process is introduced as a sequence of independent scalar Wiener processes
and everything is understandable for a student who knows one dimensional Brownian motion.
Chapters 4 and 5 define a possible mathematical framework for viewing HJM models as evolution equations. This discussion, some of which is original work of the author, is what is missing (or even wrong) in many other works on this topic. I found this chapter clear and helpful; it is the best part of the book.

Chapters 6 and 7 discuss recent researh by Bjork, Christensen, Zabczyk and the author on invariant finite dimensional manifolds for HJM models. Although this is the main focus of the thesis it seems less interesting to me since I never saw any real
motivation of this problem from financial applications.

Some weak points of the book are: total absence of any empirical data, no figures (there is not even a single figure of what a forward curve looks like), no numerical examples showing how "bad" inconsistency can be, ...Also no application is given...But then these are problem typical of the whole corpus of (continental) European literature on mathematical finance.
Another point is the relation between the "infinite dimensional" viewpoint and the "random field" interest rate models. This is discussed in some parts of the text (see Chap 5) but only briefly.

                  Book Description

This book is the result of the first comprehensive study of world wide climate fluctuations that is not primarily based on pre-existing literature reviews. The authors, employing original analysis, model runs, and data sets, use common climate change scenarios to examine the impacts on agriculture, water resources, coastal resources, forests and human health. The studies focus on the impacts of climate change in the developing countries around the world. In addition, the editors use Egypt as a case study, providing the first integrated analysis of a single country. This book will enable well-informed and up-to-date decisions by climate change researchers and policy makers.

"Bones have an uncanny knack of holding important clues as to the fate of the individuals to whom they belonged."

As portrayed in mystery novels and more than nine television shows including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, American Justice and City Confidential, forensic anthropologists work in an environment where the stakes are high, the pressure is intense, and their findings are vital in criminal investigations. It's a fascinating and often dramatic world.

Go behind the scenes with forensic anthropologists and learn about their techniques, how they locate a body, how they carefully uncover evidence, and how the unique characteristics of each body bears silent witness to age, sex, cause of death and clues as to who or what was responsible.

With 29 real-life case studies and more than 350 color photographs and illustrations, Silent Witness is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the world of forensics.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      2 out of 5 stars "SW:..." -- is a Grave Disappointment...!!! .......2005-02-24

"Silent Witness:..." by Roxanna Ferllini (Timms), NY, Firefly Books, 2002 - ISBN 1-55297-625-6 (pbk.), 7x10 in., 192 pg., has many photos; glossary, index & bibliography are short.

"SW:..." invitingly promises more than it gives: It has an bold enticing cover, c. 300 ample-sized full-color photos of crime scenes, criminals, forensic trace evidences & diverse illustrations, etc., on premium stock semi-gloss paper -- obviously a very expensive printing, especially for paperback.

Table of contents lists 8 chapters: History of Forensic Anthropology, Bone Talk, Exhumations, Surface Bodies, Altered Remains, Air Disasters, Fires/Explosives & Human Rights.

The talky text has many deficiencies: Throughout, it is overly rambling & verbose, i.e., (pg. 157) "Fingerprinting was one of the various processes utilized, and identifications were also made by molecular biologists who applied DNA analysis." Why not say "DNA & fingerprints were used for identification" and use 7 instead of 20 words? Author uses abject word choices, solecism or inaccuracies in medical/forensic phrasing as, i.e., (pg. 27) "since female humans are predisposed to pregnancy and childbirth" is non-comedic, corny. Why not say "childbearing women" and use 2 not 9 words. And, (p. 31), "cygomatics" referencing cheekbones should be "zygomatics", but problematical is wandering & wayword use of medical/forensic jargon as might a lay person.

The author's credentials (MA in Biol. Anthro.) are restricted to a 2" small space on the inside back cover & indicates she worked with UK Foreign Office as Forensic Anthropologist in Kosovo and for UN in Rwanda, and her interest in facial reproduction, political conflicts, genocide, & human rights is notable & praiseworthy. Thusly, her final Chapter 8 on Human Rights is the single textual useful strong point of "SW:..."

In summary, the book is geared to HS grade level of introductory forensics -- it has many excellent & remarkably good photographs & few hints of favorable text. What this book needs is an insightful editor who could salvage the text of "SW:..." to gain more serious readership, but Chapter 8 is okay.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written, not at all informative.......2005-02-12

This book is like reading a trashy tabloid - lots of flashy big colour photos, low on substance. Obviously trying to cash in on current interest in forensics, each chapter is poorly written and is accompanied with 3 or 4 case studies.

The material in each chapter seems to be just common sense any adult could write about after doing minimal research and the case studies are too short, repetitive and sometimes don't even make sense.

Very disappointing. I suspect this book is intended for age group around 8-15 although it never says this anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars an excellent book.......2003-01-09

i picked this book up at the library because i am fascinated by forensics. this book is an excellent source for someone interested in the subject, it is divided into subject chapters with details and photos of real cases. it explains terms very well, i feel anyone interested in forensics would enjoy this book.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2002-09-08

Every so often you come across a book that is just beautiful. You can tell that hours and hours have been put into the design, the layout and the collection of photographs and other graphics to make this book truly stand out from the crowd. This is one of those books.

The writing is of a very high standard, with some interesting forensic information that I haven't seen before in other books of this type. In my opinion the author strikes just the right balance of detail; not too light but also not to deep and heavy (after all, this isn't a text book for forensic scientists!)

The photographs and case histories have obviously been carefully selected; it would have been all too easy to choose extremely violent and graphic artwork full of blood and gore (criminal forensics is a violent business, after all), but the author has not done this, instead picking out artwork that clearly illustrate her text.

This book is a fascinating look into the world of forensic anthropology and is highly recommended.

Carl Hiaasen's characters ride and flail on little verbal hurricanes, and his literary storm shows no signs of dying down. Sick Puppy shares Dave Barry's giddy gift for finding humor in South Florida horrors, and a bit of Elmore Leonard's genius for pitch-perfect dialogue spouted smartly by criminals who are dumb as stumps. The title of Hiaasen's eighth novel could apply to most of its characters, but it chiefly refers to an ebullient Labrador retriever named Boodle and the millionaire eco-terrorist Twilly Spree. Let's just say that Twilly has a singular affliction: poor anger management in the face of environmental irresponsibility. When he spots Boodle's owner, Palmer Stoat, tossing litter from a car, Twilly goes to Stoat's home and removes the glass eyeballs from the animals that the bloated lobbyist had shot and mounted on his walls. Boodle gulps down the eyeballs, sustaining no small amount of digestive difficulties.

Soon Boodle and Stoat's wife, Desie, are fugitives from Florida's nature despoilers (who include the Governor, a "gladhanding maggot," the amusingly slimy Stoat, the human bulldozer Krimmler, the cocaine-importer-turned-developer Clapley, and the hit man Mr. Gash, who's fond of sex with multiple beach bimbos in iguana-skin sex harnesses to the tunes of The World's Most Blood Curdling Emergency Calls). Desie, who has a knack for calamitous romance, is smitten with Twilly, but urges him not to kill any litterbugs or pelican molesters: "Jail would not be good for this relationship." What keeps pure farce at bay in a novel that romps with the abandon of a scent-crazed Labrador is the otherwise charming Twilly's creepy edge of implacable fanaticism. And what redeems the funny/ugly violence from cliché is its colorful bad guys (they're as iridescent as oil slicks), Hiaasen's excellent wit, and the music of his prose. To evoke a drunk asleep on the beach, he adds a pungent detail: "a gleaming stellate dollop of seagull shit decorated his forehead."

Hiaasen is not unflawed. His original eco-terrorist character, ex-Florida governor Clinton "Skink" Tyree, seems like an interloper from the earlier books. But Hiaasen's the master of madcap ensembles (which is partly why the star-vehicle film of his fine book Strip Tease flopped). And even when you can see a chase scene's denouement coming for a beachfront mile, each paragraph packs descriptive delights to keep you going at breakneck pace. --Tim Appelo

Litterbugs, eco-terrorists, easy politicians, greedy folk, righteous folk, a kidnapped (but cheerfully oblivious) Labrador retriever, and thousands of squashed toads. That's only a partial accounting of the characters who inhabit this unbridled and outrageously funny novel that is Hiaasen at his riotous and muckraking best!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful tale of comic mayhem.......2007-09-12

This is one of those books that you just love to read over and over again to marvel at the prose. Hiaasen's comic inventiveness and characters are priceless. It's not light fare, being that a few die some rather gruesome deaths, but even that is entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Want to chuckle? Have a lobbyist for a friend?.......2007-07-20

My first Carl Hiaasen novel, picked up as a fluke. Couldn't put it down. Throughly entertaining AND thought provoking.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2007-06-23

I have read all of Carl Hiaasen's previous books and really loved them. Could not find anything negative to say about his writing but Sick Puppy is another matter.

It just seems more of the same repeated again and again. It does have its amusing moments but they are between countless pages of repetition. If you have read his earlier books, you would know exactly what this book is about and that is normally a good thing, but this time, the characters were a bit dull and the action too drawn out for my tastes.

Most disappointing. I will put the book back on my bookshelf and hope that Hiaasen's future books are better.

5 out of 5 stars Completely implausible, yet believable........2007-06-01

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I recently read Nature Girl, and although I liked those characters, that story didn't work as well for me, somehow. If I stop to think about the characters and plot of Sick Puppy, it is all completely ridiculous and unbelievable. If I were to explain it to someone else, they would just look at me like I was an idiot. Yet, while reading it, it all makes perfect sense. Twilly Spree's craziness is the only logical response to the illogic of everyday life. Even the highly-improbable climactic scene, involving a charging rhino, rings perfectly true while you are entranced by the story.

I hope Twilly goes off his meds again and ends up in another Hiaasen story.

5 out of 5 stars Great florida read.......2007-02-20

This was the first Hiaasen book that I read and I was immiadetely hooked on. It is light and funny and describes Florida in way that only Hiaasen can- blunt but with many true facts. It is a book that you can read on the beach and really relax and laugh aloud. Full of interesting caracters that make the plot and not vice versa. Enjoy it.

Grimmy is the wisecracking, opinionated, cat-terrorizing, postman-chasing, freeloading bon vivant who brings delighted smiles to the faces of his millions of adoring fans in the enormously popular cartoon strip Mother Goose and Grimm.
