Not many of us have the benefit of sitting down and picking the brains of top CEOs, the kind of guys who get their pictures on the covers of Forbes and Fortune and whose companies' quarterly earnings are reported on the evening news. Wisdom of the CEO doesn't exactly give you face time, but it does feature 29 corporate leaders talking about the issues that drive modern business--growth, innovation, shareholder value, and globalization among them.
Some of the names are those you'd expect--Michael Dell talking about growth, Sony's Nobuyuki Idea on innovation--but others are a surprise. For example, the postmaster general of the United States has written a chapter called "Firing Up the Evangelical Organization," in which he talks about the inherent contradictions of a company that is a monopoly but still has to compete for market share with publicly traded companies. The chapter on knowledge management comes last in the book, but contains the most interesting metaphor: Yahoo! chairman and CEO Timothy Koogle compares the proliferation of new information to bug spray, which works by forcing bugs to keep twitching until they run out of food or oxygen and thus die. Knowledge workers and organizations are like that, he says: If they can't find the information they need quickly, in language that's meaningful to them, they'll just keep searching until they run themselves into the ground. Not that this is a book built on clever metaphors. Two of the authors are partners with PricewaterhouseCoopers, the giant accountancy firm, and the third is a former partner. A reader doesn't expect zinging prose from this trio, and shouldn't be disappointed when it's not found. Instead, the book offers straightforward analysis of how business has changed in the past two decades and how it figures to continue changing. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:
USELESS.......2000-11-07
I was given this book to read as part of my studies. It is useless information that you could get from your drunk grandmother on any given Sunday! It is nothing more than a retort of common sense, and a CEO's bragging about individual company's accomplishment out of context, with no real information or solutions offered.
I was particularly dismayed at Middle-school level comments such as "Our work with clients and with the analysis of markets suggests that growth energizes those firms and management groups that creates outstanding shareholder value." It's classic rhetoric that makes Dilbert's life a living hell, and shows just how headless large corporations really are.
CEO WISDOM.......2000-04-17
An intellectual epic of the management movement in the global marketplace. A must read book for any business leaders who wants to gain market share, acheive product differentiation, increase shareholder value, manage KM or ride the wave of ecommerce. An insightful bilbilography backed by 29 prominent top executives in the international arena. The collection of articles provide a useful resource for MBA students and a valuable information tool for case studies.
Home Run.......2000-03-05
The authors clearly have presented us top wisdom from these business leaders. The stories are fascinating and the ideas I got from the business leaders was numerous. Well done.
I also recommend a book my company uses successfully for its leadership development program - it has worked well with new and existing managers: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."
Unique Access to 29 CEOs.......2000-02-04
The authors have anthologized commentaries by 29 CEOs who "tackle today's most pressing business challenges." In their Introduction, they note that "Global eras of fundamental change -- geopolitical, technological, economic -- that might once have taken centuries are now completed in a few years. Corporations that mapped out five-year strategic plans now review their strategies monthly." Quite true. They then identify and briefly discuss four: The Era of Internationalization (1984-1990), The Era of Global Convergence (1990-1994), The Era of Global Consolidation (1994-1996), and The Era of Acceleration (1998-2020?). The 29 commentaries are then distributed within eight chapters...for each of which the authors provide a brief introduction.
The naming and dating of these eras is much less important than the authors' comments which are coordinated with what the various CEOs have to say. Each CEO has selected a specific subject to discuss. Together, the 29 CEOs represent a wide range of global corporations which, in turn, represent an equally wide range of industries. It remains for each reader to determine which subjects are of greatest interest; also, to determine which CEOs' comments have the greatest value. Obviously, space does not permit a complete list of the commentaries and their authors. It would be rude to provide a partial list which excludes any of them.
For whom was this book written? My guess (just a guess) is that at some point, Dauphinais, Means & Price agreed that the general subject of "pressing business challenges" on a global basis would be an interesting subject for a book published in 2000. Perhaps they then considered co-authoring one. What we now have is a conceptual framework which they devised within which are clustered the observations of CEOs who (with their associates) face various "pressing business challenges" each and every waking moment. The book therefore, in my opinion, was written for whose who appreciate having such a framework, and, who are eager to know what these various CEOs have to say.
Because of the Internet and especially the WWW, by 2002 or 2003 at the latest, I am convinced that almost all companies (at least in North America) will either compete on a global basis or be strategically involved somehow with those which do. I conclude, therefore, that the collective "wisdom" provided by those who head 29 of the world's largest corporations has significant implications now for many other companies...also, that those implications will have even greater significance for most (if not all) other companies within the next 12-24 months.
If this brief commentary has stimulated your interest, I suggest that you obtain a copy of Wisdom of the CEO and check out the Table of Contents. Determine for yourself this book appeals to you as much as it did to me. Most of us have few opportunities to share the thoughts of even one CEO of a major global corporation. Thanks to Dauphinais, Means & Price, we can now do so with 29.

Good History Book Of Texas!.......2005-11-09
This book did a very good job of giving you the story of some of the richest Texans in history.Sheehy gives you a detailed description of John Connally. He served three terms as the Governor of Texas. He then served in the President Richard Nixon
administration in cabinet level positions. After returning to Texas he and his protege Ben Barnes made and lost a fortune. You
could not tell a story of Texas wealth without mentioning the Hunts.H.L. Hunt had made a fortune in the oil business. His son
Lamar helped found the A.F.L. His other son Nelson Bunker tried
to corner the silver market eventually causing the market to crash. You also have a section devoted to H.Ross Perot who reached billionaire status by becoming a cmmputor tycoon. He would go on to run for President twice.Another colorful Texas character mentioned in this book is Clayton Williams. He is a
native of Midland who made a fortune in the oil business. He was
the Republican nominee for Governor who eventually lost to Ann Richards. The sucess of the Bass Brothers is also featured in this book.Their investment advisor Richard Rainwater turned
their inheritance into a massive fortune. If you want a look at the Texas rich this is the book for you.

Book Description
This unique work provides a detailed critique of the current criminal law system as it applies to corporate wrongdoing. It assesses the potential for the legal control of corporate criminality as informed by insights gleaned from an understanding of why such crimes occur. The authors also advance the theory that such crimes should be viewed as a failure by the company to manage its business operations and a failure to have an effective risk management system in place. Corporate crime features on various undergraduate and postgraduate criminology and criminal justice courses across the country, which makes this specialist text highly appropriate for law and criminology students. It is also an insightful text appropriate for a wider academic audience and discusses the legal, sociological and criminological dimensions of corporate crime in detail. Corporate criminal responsibility is a very contemporary topic, covered in fine detail within this work.

Book Description
A groundbreaking look at the nature of quantum mechanics
With new technologies permitting the observation and manipulation of single quantum systems, the quantum theory of measurement is fast becoming a subject of experimental investigation in laboratories worldwide. This original new work addresses open fundamental questions in quantum mechanics in light of these experimental developments.
Using a novel analytical approach developed by the authors, Quantum Measurement of a Single System provides answers to three long-standing questions that have been debated by such thinkers as Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg, and Schrodinger. It establishes the quantum theoretical limits to information obtained in the measurement of a single system on the quantum wavefunction of the system, the time evolution of the quantum observables associated with the system, and the classical potentials or forces which shape this time evolution. The technological relevance of the theory is also demonstrated through examples from atomic physics, quantum optics, and mesoscopic physics.
Suitable for professionals, students, or readers with a general interest in quantum mechanics, the book features recent formulations as well as humorous illustrations of the basic concepts of quantum measurement. Researchers in physics and engineering will find Quantum Measurement of a Single System a timely guide to one of the most stimulating fields of science today.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and Entertaining.......2007-06-28
My first warning is that I think this was pretty slow to start. I found Melissa fairly whiny to start and first quarter of the book fairly draggy. But once Melissa got her Little Lady Agency up and running, she gained a lot of energy and the book with her. I found the story line at times both hilarous (although I did want to punch out her father several times) and romantic. I can think of many men who could use a person to run their social life for them! Reminders of birthdays, help shopping, etc....it is a cute idea and works great for the character. I really can't wait to read the next installment!
She's a Lady.......2007-06-13
I am giving this four stars because it is enjoyable. I love the (slightly unbelievable) premise, even if the author's character and tone and slavish, de rigeur attention to fashion are cut straight out of the pages of every Sophie Kinsella book (no wonder she heartily endorses this book).
My complaints: where was the editor? I lost count of the number of adverbs (every paragraph) and the constant, repetitive mentions of Honey/Melissa's ditherings about Jonathan. I started skipping over those segments.
Frankly, the Brian episode was funnier and more convincing than ANYTHING that happened with Jonathan. I also got confused with two characters inexplicably being named Jeremy... this book's editor really was asleep at the wheel.
I'm giving this a four because in spite of herself, Browne has a wonderful way with words - when they don't end in 'ly' that is.
Not as funny or romantic as I had hoped.......2007-05-08
I was told this was a romantic comedy. There were about four times that I chuckled. There was one kissing scene. It was an interesting read, but I will probably not read other books by this author. Sexual content: none.
REFRESHING, WITTY, AND JUST PLAIN CUTE!.......2007-04-05
I bought this book on impulse at the airport due to its cute cover and the synopsis of the book and the book's author on the back of the book.
I know this statement is very puerile and vapid, but like the book's author, I collect red lipstick and etiquette books.
When I got back from my trip, I put it on my novel shelf since at the time, I was reading more "disturbing and deep" biographies and poetry that left me depressed.
Due to my reading too many depressing books (Sylvia Plath's books and poems are hardly high comedy), I decided to pick up this book in order to cheer myself up.
I found the book to be charming and I was also glad to find a contemporary book that was not full of graphic sex or violence.
I just love Melissa and her alter ego, Honey.
I was rooting for Jonathan and Melissa through the entire book.
And her father! What a jerk! I think his character is a great antagonist for poor Melissa!
I love the descriptions of Melissa's sisters. Allegra, the wilder sister and Emery, the vapid and shallow younger sister.
I do wish that Melissa's mother's character would be more developed, but I suppose that might stray from the author's intent.
I won't spoil the book's end, but it was cute and a paradox in all the right ways.
OK, this is not supposed to be "War and Peace" or even a Jacqueline Susann novel (Susann's novels are great, but always depress me).
The only "down side" I found at all is I do not like the title at all -- it gives the book a Old Lady flavor and it is far from that!
"The Little Lady Agency" it is just girly lit and fluffy as clouds on a beautiful summer day!
If you want a fun beach read or a feel good girly book, then I think you will love this.
Now I am off to order the sequel from Amazon: "Little Lady Big Apple"!
Oh yes, how about that Roger Trumpet's foul breath?
Too lady like.......2007-03-03
I really enjoyed the book. Great suspense....All up until the end. I felt the ending came at you too fast and far too unbelievable. With all of the characters at one time gaining the confidence to tell the father off... I always hate tidy little endings. And, this books ending was way too tidy for my liking. Additionally, I would have liked to see the love grow between our heroine and her main man...
Book Description
Hilarious and warmhearted, this "deliciously addictive" (Cosmopolitan) debut romantic comedy stars a woman who goes from doormat to diva when she sets up shop as the ultimate freelance girlfriend.
Melissa Romney-Jones can bake a perfect sponge cake, type her little heart out, and plan a party blindfolded. But none of that has helped her get far in life or in love. When she gets fired -- again -- she decides to market her impeccable social skills to single men. To avoid embarrassing her father, a Member of Parliament, Melissa dons a blond wig and becomes Honey, a no-nonsense bombshell who helps clueless bachelors shop, entertain, and navigate social minefields. She even attends parties if a client needs a "date." But when a dashing American starts to request Honey's services on a regular basis, it's only a matter of time before Honey's and Melissa's worlds collide....
Customer Reviews:
Read it - You'll love it!.......2007-09-12
I don't usually read brit chic lit, but I was in a bookstore and picked up the book and started reading and couldn't put it down. I was traveling from Seattle to Miami and was delighted to share the flights with Melissa Romney-Jones. She's a character that you can easily relate to. She's funny and does things I would do. Enjoy!
Well... It was OK.......2007-08-17
Not the best, not the worst. I was actually a little disappointed. I had expected the book to be a little better than it was. The story was good - amusing at times. I liked the concept. I liked the chemistry between Melissa/Honey and Johnathan. (And Nelson should have come out of the closet.) But the ending could have been a lot better. I stayed up late just to finish the book hoping for a GREAT ending & I was disappointed. From the book's description and first few pages, I was expecting a hilarious, back-&-forth story of Melissa trying to portray both herself and Honey at the wedding without being caught (kinda like a Ms. Doubtfire deal), but it wasn't like that. I thought the whole drama scene with her father at the end was rather trite - he didn't receive the disgracing public scandal I thought he should've received, nor was there any remorse for how he'd treated and doubted Melissa - blah, blah, blah is what it was. I will be starting the next book "Little Lady, Big Apple" without the high expectation I had had for the first.....we'll see how that one goes.
S'okay.......2006-12-20
Not great...not terrible. Actually I found myself despising Melissa, the heroine. She is like the proverbial doormat--willing to let everyone walk right over her. When she finally found stiffened her spine and stood up for herself(and her hard-earned cash), I thought, "About time, right?" and then I cheered.
So it's an okay book. Some of "Honey"'s date scenes were funny...some were overly stereotypical. I applaud the ingenuity of a woman finding her niche on the career ladder, but if ever someone needed to book some time of the therapist couch, it would be Melissa.
Loved It.................. :0).......2006-11-02
I normally do not like to read first person books, however, the way this author wrote this book captures your attention right away. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and was not ready to put it down. The characters are very realistic, I could relate to the main character and found myself laughing at some of the thoughts and dilemmas she was having because they made me think of myself at times. :0) I highly recommend you read this book, I do not think you will be disappointed in the least!!! I look forward to her next book Little Lady, Big Apple.

Customer Reviews:
A fun read.......2006-01-10
I loved this book! It reminded me a little of Bridget Jones (self concious, slightly overweight shy Brittish girl) and it was a very easy and fun read.
An excellent first book by Hester Browne.......2005-08-10
Given that this was Ms Browne's first novel I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of it. The plotline was interesting - a woman that can't find her place in life changes it completely with the help of a wig and a new attitude. Thus begins the story of The Little Lady Agency where she helps men - all types of men with all sorts of social problems. As expected one of the men that she takes on she begins to fall in love with. The story is strong and interesting and this book was definitely a page turner. If you take the time to read it you will enjoy the story, I will be looking forward to the author's next book.
