            Product Description

An electrifying new biography about the four Essex lads who became award-winning stadium superstars and champions of synth pop! Jonathan Miller's groundbreaking book features in-depth interviews with founder member Vince Clarke and producers Gareth Jones and Mark Bell, and contains never-before seen interviews with the band members themselves. With additional input from Gary Human, Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby this is a unique portrait of a band that almost lost control when their lives went off the rails and lead singer Dave Gahan's heroin addiction nearly killed him. In the end Depeche Mode not only survived, they triumphed, racking up a staggering 40 million-plus album sales on the way. This is their amazing story, told in full for the first time. Born out of the post-punk backlash in the early 80's, Depeche Mode took their name from a phrase in a French style magazine and became the definitive international synth-pop group. Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore had started out as an Essex guitar band but it was their bright and upbeat synthesizer-driven brand of pop fronted by Dave Gahan that was to find global acceptance and enjoy unlikely success in the US. Despite a handful of early plaudits in the music press, the group won only intermittent critical acceptance over the years, its often light musical approach contrasting with lyrics that sometimes plunge into darker topics like S&M, religious fetishism and the scourge of capitalism. But whatever the music press said, the fans finally bought into Depeche Mode in a big way. Their Violator tour at the start of the 90s sold millions of records and turned them into major US concert stars. In true rock style, Depeche Mode's members have suffered their share of internal strife over a long career. Dave Gahan reinvented himself as a lead singer with both a harder musical edge and a near-fatal drug habit, while internal acrimony often marred the later stages of their career. Jonathan Miller has made an e

            5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2006-08-17

I found this to be a very difficult book to put down. It is packed with tons of info and insights into the personalities within the band. If you are a Depeche Mode fan, this is a must, you won't be dissapointed.

On the other side of the coin, however, there are lots of quotes taken from EPKs and the short film from the 86>98 DVD, which, of course, most fans have already seen.

Also, there was some info about Martin Gore being half black, which lacks credibility. The source who revealed the information was just called a "child hood friend". Then there's also that annoying fact that Martin bares absolutely no African features (nor do his children).

The writing style does get a bit drab from time to time. All and all, however, I give it 5 stars for simply being a fairly accurate chronology of my favorite band.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of interesting facts even for the big Fan........2006-03-23

Been avidly following Depeche Mode since 1985, so when i knew this book did not contain direct interviews with band members themselves, i suspected there would be little information i hadnt already come across from reading many articles on DM in the past 20 years. But i was wrong. Even the avid fan who has followed them closely will find a lot of new and interesting details especially about the early years. Whilst there really is nothing that exciting in the early days it really is quite nostalgic to go back to those years and read up on vince, dave, mart and fletch when they were just young teens trying out their new synths. Lots of fun to read in the end, and quite thorough too. Very up to date as well. Ends around the time Dave and Mart are promoting their solo efforts. So quite contemporary.

4 out of 5 stars Stripped: The True Story of Depeche Mode.......2005-03-17

Stripped: The True Story of Depeche Mode by Johnathan Miller is a very interesting book that for the first time tells the whole story about this groundbreaking rockgroup. The formative years are described much more in detail then the latter part and that is why I am inclined not to give 5 stars. It seems as they become more and more famous, the chapters also become shorter. I was quite interested to read about the different equipment that they had used over the years and I was quite disapointed that the author had not made a comprehensive list of all keyboards used for each recording as this is quite intesting. I also found that it strange that their was so much material on Vince Clarke as he was only with them for one album. Alan Wilder must be a bit disapointed with the book as he is shown to be arrogant, filled with self importance. I find the writing to be clear and concise and this is a very good (not perfect) biography on one very peculiar and intresting synth trio.

4 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK ON THE BAND SO FAR.......2004-09-10

'Stripped' is the most comprehensive book on Depeche Mode to date - covering all eras of the group's innovative career.
A lot of emphasis is placed on the band's formative years, with contributions given by those who knew the members before they became international stars.
There is however, like most other books written about the band, a lot of second-hand information from previous interviews - and many of these interviews are well known to those who have a keen interest in the group.
There's plenty to read though - and some rare pictures too which avid fans are bound to like.
All in all, it's definitely worth having if your a fan of "the best electronic group in the world".

5 out of 5 stars Finally Depeche Mode makes sense to me now.......2004-07-31

Finally a book that really gets into the music and personality of depeche mode and lets you understand them. The previous two books were not good and after reading them twice I was still left totally in the dark about the band.

This book discusses what the others didn't, the music!! It really tells the Depeche Mode story album by album and single by single. He tells about how the albums are made and discusses the working relationships between the group members during those albums. From that perspective he goes into personal bits on the band that really show their personalities. This book doesn't just start talking about their personalities and sorta throw in the albums as time markers. It really shows you how their music develops.

He also really brings up alot of new interviews and facts, which I didn't think existed. After reading the other books, which overlapped alot, this book had refreshing new interviews that shed incredible perspective on the group. Alan's story is finally told as well in great detail...giving some of the most candid insights into the group. Daniel Miller, Gareth Jones, and Vince Clark are covered as well.

I have been a HUGE fan for over 17 years now and until I read this book I always thought that they came from outerspace. Its funny but I will kinda miss that naivete. I had my own ideas of them that weren't true that I will miss. But now that I know the whole story, it inspires me.

As far as the writing goes, I am not in the position to judge, as is (mrs?) Maya Blend Champion. I was responding to the persona of poor Peurto Rican Jew, and the pain that a parent must feel to find tha he/she has been written out of the family history in favor of an adopted identity. It made me think of Mary Austin, the subject of my own published writing, and how she reconciled with her mother only shortly before her death, then went on to spend the rest of her life as a self-styled desert woman who continued to try to work out her issues with her mother in her writing.

Dave Blend is a master writer. Funny, side-splitting and a hell of a guy, Dave makes me want to pack it up and move back home to Texas with his savory words about yummy BBQ! I can tell you that his book has also pleased many Alabamians. They take their tailgating mighty seriously down there, and his book has entertained my family and their friends. He has successfully pulled together the South and the Lone Star State into BBQ solidarity. We need to all go in on an RV, grab a little Salt Lick sauce, and watch some football. Thanks for this tome to BBQ and inspiring me to watch more Crimson Tide (and of course my Longhorns). If one can get me to watch football and like it... then that ONE is a great writer who should be showered with publishers, wanting all his novels.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2006-01-28

This book is a complete waste of money. It contains no information that a reasonably intelligent man (or woman) couldn't easily figure out on his or her own, or discover on internet dating sites for free. The authors are believers in astrology, and devote a substantial chunk of the book to providing astrological information. As you can probably tell, I do not believe in astrology, but despite that, the astrological information in the book would also be very quickly available at no cost to any minimally proficient Google user.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for guys only!.......2005-05-04

It was amusing to read all the reviews on this book and see the wide diversity of opinions. I know one of the authors (yes, they are real guys who happen to have the same name). He received over 350 unsolicited emails from women in about four months and had dates every other night. I saw the emails, and the pictures of the women who sent them. Some were average, but many were very attractive; a few were supermodel types. He's a real man's man who actually met and married the perfect woman for him after he wrote this book. He didn't intend the book for women (they've got plenty of their own), and he didn't intend it to help guys find some woman's notion of romance. He intended it to help guys find whatever they want from online dating. So what's the problem?

5 out of 5 stars This is Simply an Excellent Guide.......2005-05-03

It's amazing, you write a supportive book for your own (male) species and suddenly you're a pariah? I read this book and I read all the reviews of it, both good and bad and I'm confounded as to how any male could have a problem with this well-written, content rich work. The only crime the writer commits (heaven forbid), is that there is a general tone of protection for the reader and why the heck not!! Just as with any woman, if a man gets taken in by the wrong relationship, it can wreck his life. If you read between the lines and swallow your errrr politics, you'll see through the veneer of the authors' words, and through the veneer of their detractors, that the Edgars are compassionate men who are trying to help other men make wiser relationship choices, and that is a problem because? Huh, I don't get it. If you really read this book, you'll gain something from it. It might even help you to make a wiser choice than for example, the choice not not NOT to date its naysayers. Thank you Edgars for having the courage to protect our side. Hard as it is to swallow for some, men are people too and have the same rights to be happy as women.

1 out of 5 stars Not much of value..........2005-01-25

The closest to valuable information this book has is: The % of emails you received compared to the number of times your profile is viewed. There is nothing else here that isn't already listed on most dating web sites themselves. Don't waste your money, just read the information provided by the site(s) that you are a member of.

It also appears that this book was sponsored by two specific companies (3 sites) as their name appears all over this book, and the 100's of other sites are ignored.

I was surprised to see that this book was only written by two people. It has the disjointed feel of being written by a large group of people. It jumps from talking down to people only looking for sex, to praising how easily you can get sex, to talking down to people whom consider religious compatibility important. And that's just one example. I truly thought that it was written by at least five different authors, and edited by people who didn't speak to each other.

1 out of 5 stars Not reader worthy.......2004-12-01

I bought this to review it for content and usability, I can't believer what I read. This book has nothing useful in it! It don't tell you anything about what to say or even how to figure out what type of woman you want let alone how to get her to respond to you. It's just full of useless information like horoscopes I culdn't believe it, it even had the chinese horoscope taken off of some menu in a restaurant! This book doesn't do anything buy take your money and waste a tree.

Do you want to live to be 200? How about 500? Maybe forever? Ben Bova, famed science fiction author and futurist, predicts that within the lifetimes of many people alive in 1998, molecular biology and genetics will reveal the secrets of cellular immortality, freeing people of the "threescore years and ten" most of us are allotted. Further, Bova asserts in Immortality, we will be living those long lives in healthy, youngish bodies, subject only to death by accident. To back up this claim, Bova offers a nice, clear overview of how genetics has come to the brink of science fiction, made accessible to readers unfamiliar with the terminology through the use of explanatory sidebars and basic definitions. If you find yourself doubting this prediction, two things might make you reassess your opinion: (1) Ben Bova was right when he foretold the advent of the Internet, solar-powered satellites, electronic books, and many other wonders of the 20th century, and (2) in an extraordinary 50-year time line, he shows how fast and furious technological developments have come--including things that would have been deemed impossible mere months before they happened. After showing how science is laying the groundwork for achieving incredible human longevity, Immortality examines the ways society, government, the environment, and personal responsibility might change in the face of it. No pessimist or technophobe, Bova assures us that immortal people will (by necessity) become more farsighted and thoughtful about their lives and the lives of others. The search for earthly immortality has occupied humans throughout history ... how long do you want to live? --Therese Littleton

                    Book Description

The first immortals are already living among us. You might be one of them.

At first glance, that arresting statement sounds as if it might come from a science fiction story. But it is an astonishing, exciting fact--as explained clearly and cogently by Dr. Ben Bova. In his distinguished career, Dr. Bova has predicted the discovery of life on Mars, the space race of the 1960s, solar-powered satellites, the discovery of organic chemicals in interstellar space, virtual reality, the Strategic Defense Initiative, the advent of international peacekeeping forces, the discovery of ice on the Moon, and electronic book publishing Now he explores the future effects of science and technology on the human life span--and discovers that one day, death will no longer be the inevitable end of life.

Dr. Bova guides readers through worldwide research into the biochemical processes that cause aging and death, and shows what scientists are discovering about stopping, perhaps even reversing these processes According to Dr. Bova, if you have a normal life expectancy today, the medical and biological advances that will be achieved over the next ten to twenty years will probably allow you to live long past one hundred The longer you live, the more knowledge scientists will glean, and the further they will be able to extend your life span.

With crystal-clear, utterly accessible prose Dr. Bova explains how science could maintain the youth and vigor of a fifty-year-old indefinitely, perhaps even reversing the effects of aging He also offers provocative thoughts on the tumultuous societal consequences of such biomedical breakthroughs, as greatly extended life spans and virtual immortality transform institutions like Medicare, Social Security, pension plans, life insurance, even the very foundations of work and retirement Here is a compelling, startling, understandable, and vitally important study of the greatest challenge--and the most tantalizing opportunity--ever faced by humankind.

I found this book to be an enjoyable and easy read for a layman. Just enough information to "get it" without all the technical details/terminology that only serves to confuse the reader.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the state of modern medicine in exploring pathways for achieving greatly extended lifespans. A glimpse at what's coming down the pike that might ENORMOUSLY impact society.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN--THE QUESTION IS WHEN!.......1999-07-22

Dr. Ben Bova did a marvelous job writing this book, in an entertaining & logical manner, he explains that not only the how and details of this inevitable event of human existence, he also, explains to the reader the opposition such discoveries will run into, truly fascinating, and for those of you who still find it hard to believe after you have read it (which you won't, but if you do), check out the following company: GERON!--they are gonna be the Microsoft of Human Genetic enhancing drugs........"May you live in interesting times"--Chinese proverb--that is an understatement...............

2 out of 5 stars A good overview with a poor treatment of the details.......1999-04-14

This book offers a simple discussion for some of the causes of aging and the medical treatments which may be used to intervene in them. Bova does a very good job looking at how society will have to deal with the trends in medicine.

If you are do not have a science background, Part I (Chapters 1-15): "The Scientific Evidence" provides a good background for the biology & medicine. If you have a good background in these areas, you may want to skip to Part II: (Chapters 16-21) "The Impact of Immortality", which is much more interesting.

My background includes microbiology, biochemistry, several years of research into the causes of aging and 2 years as the president of Aeiveos Sciences Group where we studied the molecular biology of aging. I found misinterpretations or errors every few pages in the biology discussions. This is probably more the fault of the publisher who should have had the book reviewed by an expert in the field before publication. The treatment of nanotechnology (Chapter 15) is very simplistic.

Forthcoming books such as Nanomedicine by Robert Freitas will be much better in discussing the nuts & bolts of how you solve the problems of aging. Books such as Caleb Finch's "Longevity, Senescense and the Genome" and Steve Austad's "Why We Age" provide a much better background on the biology of aging.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read. I finished knowing that I will live forever.......1998-11-24

Ben Bova has, in his book Immortality, accomplished wonderful things. He has managed to make science fun. That is a great accomplishment in and of itself and I recommend the book for this reason. More importantly, though, he has managed to outline the case for immortality. I read this with a critical eye. I am a scientist (a neurophysiologist). But I am now convinced that he is right: Death will someday disappear. As a scientist, it is my vocation to read scientific articles. I read scientific books, as well. They cover the science, all right, but rarely do they provide the big picture about a subject, rarely do they entertain and enthrall. I want the author to explore the possibilities of our existence. I want to be entertained. Few authors accomplish this. But Bova's Immortality fits the bill. I was enthralled. I was informed. My eyes did open upon the future. And what I saw excites me!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing effort from a prolific author........1998-10-23

I had eagerly awaited the opportunity to read Ben Bova's new book entitled "Immortality:How Science is extending your Life Span and Changing the World". I foresaw that this book, with Bova's name recognition, could potentially extend the audience for the topic of anti-aging research. However I have been disappointed in several respects even though this is a book which covers many of the basic themes underlying current anti-aging research. The book seems to lack focus in that Dr. Bova covers topics that are peripherally related to aging and covers them at a very basic level suitable for a high school student. Sometimes the explanations that Bova supplies are simplified to the point of being misleading if not in outright factual error. I would expect a better standard of accuracy from such a widely published author. The fact that "Dr." adorns this cover prominently when it does not appear on many of Bova's other publications strikes me as a cheap marketing ploy. It is later made clear in the preface that Dr. Bova is "not a scientist by training" nor is he a medical doctor as the unsuspecting might believe due to the byline. This is also made apparent by his limited grasp of the concepts that he attempts to explain. The hyperbole adorning the dust cover is of comparable in excess to that of Michael Fossel's book "Reversing Human Aging". He seems taken with the research into human Growth Hormone (hGH) but fails to provide any supporting references. To be fair, however, Bova does touch on the broad issues and points of aging research but I still would have to recommend Steven Austad's book "Why We Age" or James Goczewski's "Aging" or even Fossel's book over this one.
