3 out of 5 stars Has some really useful interviewing tips .......2007-10-04

This book helps you to come up with good interview questions to identify outstanding people. I've never thought about asking some of those questions in interviews. I normally focus more on the technical aspects than the soft skills/behavior aspects. This book is a good eye opener. I was able to correlate the behavior of the outstanding people described in this book with the ones in my organization. Most of the behavioral aspects match.

There is nothing unique about the rewarding techniques proposed in this book. Most of them are well known and widely adopted.

        Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive economic assessment of the rapidly growing Hispanic American work force. In a wide-ranging analysis of a variety of large computerized data banks, the author presents a host of original findings on postwar trends in Hispanic wages, poverty unemployment rates, and educational attainment. The implications of these findings for current debates on income inequality, discrimination, school dropouts, and the domestic effects of immigration are thoroughly evaluated. Many of the conclusions throw into question widely held views on these issues among the public, academics, and policymakers.

"With a sleuth's attention to detail, Streissguth explores the mysterious origins of an album every bit as mythic as Sgt Pepper or Pet Sounds." -Details

On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash (1932-2003) took the stage at Folsom Prison in Folsom, California. The concert and the live album, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, propelled him to worldwide superstardom. He reached new audiences, ignited tremendous growth in the country music industry, and connected with fans in a way no other artist has before or since.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison is a riveting account of that day, what led to it, and what came after. Scrupulously researched, rich with the author's unprecedented access to Folsom Prison's and Columbia Records' archives, illustrated with more than 100 photos, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison shows how Johnny Cash forever became a champion of the downtrodden, as well as one of the more enduring forces in American music.

Hello.......I'm Johnny Cash...the famous words that opened his acts on almost all of his shows. The making of Johnny Cash at Folsom prison is really great reading, I would really recommend this book to everybody, even if you are not a Cash fan

            4 out of 5 stars Prison drama . . ........2007-03-27

For Johnny Cash fans, this book tells the back-story for the making of his Folsom Prison album in 1968, complete with a large selection of photos taken during rehearsals and performance. Cash, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers made up the entire program that day (there were two performances), along with June Carter. An unusual recording for any time in the history of music, "Folsom Prison" came about almost entirely through the persistent efforts of Cash and his producer Bob Johnston, who fought Columbia Records every step of the way to make the project happen.

Author Streissguth's book is written in Rolling Stone style prose, with enthusiasm for the music and the performer and a degree of high drama. His argument is that the album not only helped Cash back onto the charts, after a long fallow period, but made of him a legend. The year being 1968 and the spirit of the times revolutionary, his drawing attention to the men in American prisons converged with the growth of social protest against any form of oppression and the recurrent American fascination with the outlaw.

Altogether, the book is long on personality and short on the music itself. We learn the history of Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," largely stolen from another songwriter, and "Greystone Chapel," written by a current Folsom inmate, and we are told of how the characteristic style of his back-up musicians evolved in the early years. But beyond this there is little exploration of the songs that make up the album and how they were performed, and very little is disclosed about the creative decisions that went into post-production, though it is revealed that the audience response to "I shot a man in Reno" was added after the fact. A fine companion piece for the film "Walk the Line," the book is definitely for fans, a time capsule for a moment of music history in the late 1960s.

Johnny Cash: at Folsom Prison the Making of a Masterpiece

            BY: Michael Stressguth
On January 13, 1968, Johnny R. Cash stepped on stage at Folsom Prison, California to do a concert that was going to be recorded by Columbia Records. The album Johnny Cash: At Folsom Prison not only became one of the best selling live albums ever, it would launch Cash into superstardom for life. The concert was great because it was meant just for prisoners and Cash sang songs that cheered the prisoners up and he had songs the prisoners could relate to like "Folsom Prison Blues", "Busted", "I Still Miss Someone", "25 Minutes to go", and "Cocaine Blues". Before Johnny Cash, no one ever did a performance at a maximum security prison.

Cash's struggle that led him to do this concert was a difficult struggle. Johnny Cash was a serious Drug addict who had to quit in order to continue his dream and get the woman he loved (June Carter). It reminds me of the struggle that Ms. Dubose faced in To Kill A Mockingbird. Ms Dubose was a former Morphine addict who also, struggled quitting and coming back off quitting. I liked this book because not only am I huge Johnny Cash fan, but it was just a good read. I didn't like the book because it took to long to get to Johnny Cash's performance. If you wanted to read the book just for Cash, You really don't care about Bob Dylan and other people (unless you are interested in it). But, Overall it was a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison:The Book.......2006-11-04

Overall a very good book on the legend plus June Carter, Carl Perkins and the rest of Johnnys' band making their famous concert recording at Folsom in 1968. Many, many great pictures that you probably won't find anywhere else!!

5 out of 5 stars Proves Cash was so Beloved.......2006-08-09

A new biography of an American legend based on interviews with Tennesseans and the archives of Cash's manager proves why this man is so beloved by so many

The second volume in the acclaimed series that brings to life the groups of avant-garde writers, artists, and patrons who were keystones of what has come to be called Modernism, this book sheds new light on the hard-living, maverick poets and novelists--William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and others--who coalesced into the Beats. Illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Great guidebook to the early Beats.......2005-12-21

There are few literary movements in American history that have been as influential as that of the Beat Generation. Together they expressed discontent with life in postwar America and decried the literary traditions of their age. Their subjects were their very own lives, particularly their relationships, their travels, and their experimentation and use of mind-altering chemicals, all of which was in defiance of the social norms of their times.

In this book, Steven Watson chronicles the formative years of the movement, from their initial encounters in 1940s New York to the publication of Burroughs's novel "Naked Lunch." In this, Watson follows an outline of the history of the Beats once articulated by Allen Ginsberg, starting with how they came together as a group and then moving on to describe the writing of their key works, their struggles against censorship, and their eventual success and notoriety. While his focus is primarily on the major figures - Ginsberg, Kerouac, Burroughs, Neal Cassady, and Herbert Huncke - and their influences on one another, his scope is wide-ranging, and includes examinations of the San Francisco Renaissance, the avant-garde Black Mountain College, and the subsequent commercialization of the Beats by the end of the 1950s.

Watson describes all of this in a brisk and informative narrative. Generously illustrated, the margins are peppered with quotes, definitions of Beat terminology, and lists of people, books, and traits that define the movement. Together it makes for an invaluable guidebook to the Beats; while no substitute for the writings themselves, it is an excellent resource for understanding the origins and development of the Beat movement.

5 out of 5 stars By Far the Best.......2002-07-04

This is by far the best book about the Beats that I have read to date. I really enjoyed the entire book. Its a quick read, has fun anecdotes, quotes and definitions printed in the margins of every page, and delivers a tremendous amount of information about the Beat Generation. I was impressed by the amount of history covered for the main Beat characters, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Carr, and Burroughs. I especially enjoyed the in depth looks at their first meetings with one another and the focus on what each one was reading during the early years. The aforementioned writers are definitely the focus of this book, but there is also a decent amount of time dedicated to minor characters involved in the generation.
You really can't go wrong with this book, rather this will be your first introduction to the Beats or your a veteran of Beat lore, you will definitely gain something from reading this text. This book also includes an awesome year to year run down of important events in the Beat movement shown in correlation with important social and political events of the time. If you enjoy this book you may want to check out 'Rolling Stone's Book of the Beats' also, another great addition to the Beat fan's bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for so many reasons...........2000-08-29

This is a great book for a numer of reasons. I'm going to list a number of them and then write a bit in conclusion.

              1. It deals with many of the 'Beats' rather than focusing, as is typical, on Kerouac and Ginsberg and forgetting the rest of them. It provides an illuminating portrait of Burroughs (who is definately a key figure), Neal Cassidy (who is also), and alot of the girls, etc. who were around them. 2. It provides reading lists, etc. of what they were reading. This is HUGE if you want to understand the bitterness/despair that is found in Burroughs and Ginsberg... as well as insight into how they interpretted their life and times (i.e. because they read these books, they in a dialogic sense would interpret things along such-and-such lines.... as a psychologist would interpret a 'vision of God' one way and a believer a second.... 3. Lots of minutia/trivia that is just fun.

It's a really good book and more stimulating than one would expect from a book that is in the shape of a square. It would not suffice as a literary biography of any of the authors contained in the 'movement' nor could it supplant any social history book. But, it suppliments them and is fun to read: sort of an academic version of 'Seventeen' at points. I really love this book. I'd definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to become first among their band of friends if all their friends want to do is read a little bit of 'On the Road' and 'Howl' (and then think they know about this time period....

3 out of 5 stars For the New Beat Reader.......2000-06-06

Steven Watson does an admirable job of bringing together the various strands of Beat history through an engaging, storyteller-like style. Though he doesn't cover much new ground, his treatment of the Beat Women, Black Mountain Poets and the San Francisco Renaissance will be particularly helpful for those who are just beginning to explore the ancillary figures of the Beat movement. However, anyone already familiar with the lives of Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Kerouac will find nothing revelatory here.

One point of concern is Watson's often overzealous descriptions of Beat sexuality. While sexual liberalism was certainly a significant tenet of Beat existence, it was not, in my estimation, the raison d'etre for Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kerouac, etc. It could be argued that Neil Cassady illuminated the sexual experience for core Beats, but his contribution as an iconic figure should not be devalued by presenting him as merely the sexual driving force of the Beats. Moreover, Watons implies that Ginsberg's homosexuality was the primary facet of his literary development. This is more than debatable. Certainly, Ginsberg's supernatural visions of Blake and his relationship with his mother served a much more profound purpose.

Though Watson should be commended for his thoroughness, the result at times is an overemphasis on the sexual side of the Beats. In Watson's book, this serves to lessen the importance of the Beats' dramatic contributions to literature and poetry.

5 out of 5 stars From Birth to Death the Beats..........1999-12-29

The most unbiased and honest writing on the beats I've read to date. Steven Watson stears clear of glorification and awe, and brings you inside the little worlds of these real life characters. Swings you around to the outside looking in observing these dark lost drug induced literary masters. I especially appreciate the in depth look at Joan Vollmer Burroughs, an often overlooked main character of the Beats.

Kithbook: Pooka is a wonderful guide to the shapechanging trickster of the Changeling World. However, it's out of print and the only copies I've seen are being offered for absolutely OBSCENE prices. It's fun, but unless you are a hardcore collector, it's NOT worth THAT much.

Lobby White Wolf: perhaps they will reissue it on electronic media, if not paper

I was desperately looking forward to this book... I am an avid pooka player.. but when I finally got my mits on it I nearly cried. This book just seemed like they took Werewolf and tried to put Changeling face on it... This is a grave let down and disappointment for someone who's waited years to see this book.

I find the book very usefull if you play a pooka. It gives special rules in ore depth and their own flaws and merits. I would highly reccoend getting it if you play or intend on playing a pooka.

The pooka kithbook is yet another great book published by white-wolf. Kudos to the great writers at WW. I have read the book cover to cover and I found it entertaining as well as informative. The artwork is amaizing. Granted it is the only kithbook in black in white , it's information on this kith make up for the lack of color. I reccomend this book to any Changeling player or any one who wants to know what a pooka is. Carol Grimsley

As an active Roleplayer, storyteller and Game Mistress, you can say i have read my fair share of compendiums and manuals. When i recently got involved in a Live Action Role Playing game near where i lived, and we played White Wolf's Changling; the Dreaming, our players all tried to line up their characters with what they would be as themselves in real life, to make things a bit easier.

Well, reading the Pooka Kithbook certainly helped me. Everyone in my group loves this book, and is jealous that i play such a kind of character. Pooka can fit into any realm of playability and this book not only outlines a valid history, but also adds a pooka-esque twist, which is always a plus.

The Pooka Kithbook has new merits, and flaws, treasures and roleplaying hints for these complicated characters. And just when you thought a pooka was a cute furry liar, it goes into the more dangerous and exotic Pooka, rare pooka and kith Natures and Demeanors, which i don't want to give away!

All in all, i give this book a massive two paws, two fins, two claws, two hooves... what ever you may have, way up! For any table top or live action player of White Wolf's games, this book is a must on top of a must!

                    Book Description

Working with longitudinal data introduces a unique set of challenges. Once you've mastered the art of performing calculations within a single observation of a data set, you're faced with the task of performing calculations or making comparisons between observations. It is simple to look backward in data sets, but how do you look forward and across observations? Ron Cody provides straightforward answers to these and other questions. This book details useful techniques for conducting operations between observations in a SAS data set. For quick reference, the book is conveniently organized to cover: tools--an introduction to powerful SAS programming techniques for longitudinal data; case studies--a variety of illuminating examples that use Ron's techniques; and macros--detailed descriptions of helpful longitudinal data macros. Beginning to intermediate SAS users will appreciate this book's informative, easy-to-comprehend style. And those users who frequently process longitudinal data will learn to make the most of their analyses by following Ron's methodologies.

                      Book Description

ARCHIVES: The making and registering of wills by ordinary people became widespread in East Anglia a century earlier than parts of midland and western England. It is of enormous value therefore to have one of the earliest surviving registers from an archdeaconry made available. (The volume) provides us with a window into rural society in mid-fifteenth-century East Anglia. It was a society bustling with small farmers, craftsmen involved in the cloth industry, and other artisans and traders. The wills record their concern for religion, the local community and the future welfare of wives, children, godchildren and even servants. There is a wealth of information here for the historian of religion, the family, material culture, agriculture and industry. This volume contains abstracts, in English, of nearly nine hundred wills made by residents of the western part of Suffolk in the mid-fifteenth century, together with a further five hundred 'probate sentences' - details of the granting of probate, without the associated wills. These are the earliest surviving wills of ordinary inhabitants of that part of Suffolk, excluding the titled, the wealthy and the clergy. They illustrate in considerable detail the social conditions of the time, including housing and household possessions, landholding and farming patterns, and provision for the poor. They are especially rich in references to the religious practices of the day. The introduction outlines the probate system of the area at that time and examines the form and content of a medieval will.

If art is our most reliable oracle, then the future looks cool, digital, and expensive. Stephen Wilson's massive Information Arts compiles notes on and samples of the work of over 200 artists, organized loosely by scientific discipline. Artists drawing inspiration from cell cultures, GPS, robots, surveillance databases, and other technological muses receive a page or two of commentary, often including their own statements and critical reviews.

The image selection is only adequate and often puzzling--why show a photograph of an installation meant to be experienced in total darkness, for example? Still, as a reference and resource guide, Information Arts is without parallel, especially for the largest section, covering computer-related or -aided artworks. Deep research, engaging prose, and copious listings of further information make it essential for exploring the avant. --Rob Lightner

                          Book Description

A new breed of contemporary artist engages science and technology--not just to adopt the vocabulary and gizmos, but to explore and comment on the content, agendas, and possibilities. Indeed, proposes Stephen Wilson, the role of the artist is not only to interpret and to spread scientific knowledge, but to be an active partner in determining the direction of research. Years ago, C. P. Snow wrote about the "two cultures" of science and the humanities; these developments may finally help to change the outlook of those who view science and technology as separate from the general culture.

In this rich compendium, Wilson offers the first comprehensive survey of international artists who incorporate concepts and research from mathematics, the physical sciences, biology, kinetics, telecommunications, and experimental digital systems such as artificial intelligence and ubiquitous computing. In addition to visual documentation and statements by the artists, Wilson examines relevant art-theoretical writings and explores emerging scientific and technological research likely to be culturally significant in the future. He also provides lists of resources including organizations, publications, conferences, museums, research centers, and Web sites.

This book is simply an extensive list of artist biographies with a brief summary of their work. It is a "Who's who" reference of artists working with science/technology based media. It does not have good examples (photos) or explorations of the art works.

3 out of 5 stars Breadth not Depth.......2007-05-14

This book covers an extremely wide range of artists, but with disappointingly little theoretical rigor or depth.

4 out of 5 stars lotsa cool stuff.......2002-02-10

I really liked this book. I'm interested in computer art but Information Arts shows that is just the top of the iceberg -- artists dancing in zero gravity, learning how to change the patterns on butterfly wings, reclaiming toxic waste dumps, planting chips in their body, making radioactive sculptures, breeding artificial life.... You really begin to get a glimpse of what kind of art is coming down the road.

I appreciated the systematic way the book dealt with all these topics. There are chapters on art exploring biology, particle physics, space art, mathematical art, artificial life, etc. The author seemed to work hard to find artists from all over the world coming at it from different points of view. Also each section also offers a review of relevant theory, and seemed very fair in its attempt to offer a full range of opinions.

There are two kinds of artist sections in the book - multipage sections with an image and samples of the artists' writing, and shorter sections of a few lines. I wish there were more details on the less described artists but then the book would have been bigger than its already huge 1000 pages. Also, I wish the images were color. The author provides web links for all the artists. It's a great starting point, although it could have used tighter editing (still it's great exercise equipment!).

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference - Fine line to Hubris...........2002-01-30

This book is organized in two parts: theory and name-throwing. The theory parts are at times interesting, at times obscure and redundant. They precede chapters full of names, (supposedly big names) in the "information arts". To be fair, Wilson collected a huge database of names to be included in this volume and it serves a purpose. It is a good starting point for someone to look up people and their work. Not enough descriptions of what people do unfortunately. At least the names are highlighted and indexed so you can quickly go through it and pick up names. It is a name book...and a good stroke to many people's egos, including Wilson's who doesn't omit himself and the "I...once upon a time" reference to himself and his greatness. Being that there is nothing else like it out there, it is a good addition to one's reference shelf. But don't rely on it to measure greatness and don't hold your breath for super-exciting theory you haven't read before. Quite an undertaking, and with omissions which at least Wilson admits to. Give it a try. The pictures are not that great. If anything, they take away from the "mystique" of the who-is-who rather than add to it.
