Book Description
This book explores the growing tension between the requirements of employers for a flexible work force and the ability of parents and communities to nurture their children and provide for their health, welfare, and education. Global competition and the spread of information technology are forcing businesses to engage in rapid, worldwide production changes, customized marketing, and just-in-time delivery. They are reorganizing work around decentralized management, work differentiation, and short-term and part-time employment. Increasingly, workers must be able to move across firms and even across types of work, as jobs get redefined. But there is a stiff price being paid for this labor market flexibility. It separates workers from the social institutions--family, long-term jobs, and stable communities--that sustained economic expansions in the past and supported the growth and development of the next generation. This is exacerbated by the continuing movement of women into paid work, which puts a greater strain on the family's ability to care for and rear children. Unless government fosters the development of new, integrative institutions to support the new world of work, the author argues, the conditions required for long-term economic growth and social stability will be threatened. He concludes by laying out a framework for creating such institutions.

How to reproduce human and social capital in the new economy.......2002-05-30
Martin Carnoy did a great job to organize his own field works and general trends into a seamless fabric. The broad features of new economy is captured by a deft hand with timely insertion of lively facts. Whenever I meet materials on this kind of subject, I cannot but be assured that social sciences are not science but a derivative of literature. They tend to be super-optimistic or ultra-pessimistic. But equipped with well founded conception, Carnoy takes a realistic stance. He shows what should be called social sciences
The author raises the question: How to sustain current economic expansion? On the face of cut-throat global competition, the workplace could not but be transformed to attain flexibility. With it, firms compete in the new environment. But flexibility indicates disaggregating workers from the social institutions that reproduce human capital and social capital. The author calls for public intervention to establish reintegrating institutions for two reasons:
1. Traditional nuclear family and local community have been stressed with mounting pressures from labor market. Those institutions have been the very place where human capital and social capital are reproduced. Human capital and social capital are indispensable to sustain the economic growth. New economy is more vulnerable to such undermining the very infra, society, where the economy is embedded.
2. What is the most distinct in the new economy is knowledge. Knowledge, or human capital, should be reproduced. Now it¡¯s relegated to the individual¡¯s hand. This has devastating effects on social integration. Without some measures, the access to knowledge, skills, and information divide workforce into the dual labor market where winner and loser reproduce themselves for good.
Knowledge communities: means and ends for society's future.......2001-02-20
Carnoy's analysis of labor data, along with astute personal insights, are his tools for describing a changing world of work, family, and community. He examines tchnology-based workplace changes, as well as trends concerning globalization and the impact of women's role in the labor force and changing family structures. The "cloth" of Carnoy's vision is woven from many emerging trends which affect the way we define community. He concludes that societies might benefit from a shift in power from mega-nationals to innovative local governments, requiring active commitment on the part of citizens, a a redirection from job-centeredness to knowledge-centeredness.
Finally an academic book that makes sense for your life.......2000-11-05
This book explains the current transformation of employment and work, and the consequences for families and communities. It shows, with an impressive documentation, that flexibility is the norm. The new economy is productive because workers move around and change jobs and activities. But this flexibility may be socially unsustainable, unless we strengthen the family, the community, and the schools. What I really like about this book is that it is a great piece of academic research, yet it is a down to earth, policy oriented book that could help us and our politicians to make the new economy socially sustainable. Required reading for economic and social sciences in colleges. And easy, interesting reading for everybody wanting to understand our new world. Manuel Castells, Berkeley, California.

Great!.......2000-05-19
Colorful photos, sheetmusic covers, it really gives you the feel of Gershwin in his time. If you are interested in what Gershwin and his contemoraries had to say (and what they looked like) this a great book. Obviously, its not a biography.
Gershwin in His Time.......2000-05-14
This book is composed of articles written by Gershwin and others commenting on his work. "Gershwin in His Time" covers the period from 1919 till his death in 1937. Therein lies the strength and weakness of this book. "Gershwin in His Time" is not comprehensive enough to be the only book you read on this American genius, but it makes a fine addition for those who want to capture a sense of the time and read what Gershwin wrote on jazz and music.

Customer Reviews:
Great Info, Bad format.......2006-07-27
I'd give this five stars but the format was very hard to follow. I want to pat Bastford on the head and kick them in the butt at the same time. A pat on the head for the Psakhis books and a kick in the butt for the format of info. Take a hint and just copy Gambit's format. The info itself is coming from one of the most knowledgeable french aficionados outside of Korchnoi and Bareev in my book. His evaluations are spot on, it's a must buy, just be prepared to jump around a bit.
Excellent book.......2006-04-22
This book is an excellent review about the most positional lines in this lovely defence. Psakhis made a good complement for other great book like French Defence by Watson, but with an approach more dry and positional.
Probably the best Psakhis french book in 4 tome series.......2005-10-29
I have all four of Psakhis new series about french opening, and generally, I am not satisfied about few things here. For example, general concept about annotating one particular game, covering huge subvariations in-between the moves is not too apeeling for everybody outhere. But this book, as the last in the series, has somewhat more textual explanations than usual, and very logically set amount of covering the various variations. But nevertheless, one can not ignore the sheer quality of Psakhis lines, and their evaluations-he is apsolute master in this. If I must choose one author to trust about judgement of some line, that would most definetly be Psakhis.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe 24 Days.......2005-11-21
Another book where the author is tech savy and assumes the beginner already knows something about photoshop. Many basic steps are left out or assumed and this makes learning and moving on to following chapters almost impossible. Not for teaching yourself if you are new to adobe photoshop.
Glaring Omission.......2005-07-27
As I have been wading through this book for the past week, I have found it more and more difficult to understand. This book's glaring omission in my opinion is its lack of physical graphic images that I can manipulate. We need to see before-and-after examples done with our own hands that explain what she is talking about. The first image that you can download on line is well into chapter 3. I got the most frustrated with the "Cut and Paste" section in chapter 3 which had no photos on line for me to recreate with her, and her explanation of how to Paste was non-existent. It was at this point that I decided to move on to another book.
Mistake ..........2004-01-17
... even after reading the above reviews I decided to give this book a shot. Bad idea. There are a few typos in the book that are annoying, but not really enough to lead you completely astray. Unfortunately that is about as good as the book gets. There is a complete lack of really good visual aids, diagrams, pics, and step by step "how-to's". Carla Rose also will use terminology that isn't explained until later on, making things more confusing. Additionally all the screen shots are in Mac, not Windows, which may or may not effect the examples. This book is not for the beginner. I would look else where.
good for beginners.......2003-12-27
This book, like many of the SAMS 24 hour series, is a good and fast introduction to the program. If you don't have the time to wade through a thousand page tome on Photoshop this book will quickly get you up and running.
My only complaint is: the download for the images used in the book only contains one picture per chapter. Not every illustration as mentioned earlier.
This book is terrible.......2003-11-20
Maybe the so called expert thinks this book is a 5 Star but take it from a novice, this book is absolutely terrible. Think twice before you buy.

Book Description
At the tactical level of war the Germans are widely regarded as having had the most innovative and proficient army of World War I. Likewise, many historians would agree that the Germans suffered from serious, if not fatal, shortcomings at the strategic level of war. It is at the middle level of warfare, the operational level, that the Germans seem to be the most difficult to evaluate.
Although the operational was only fully accepted in the 1980s by many Western militaries as a distinct level of warfare, German military thinking well before the start of World War I clearly recognized the Operativ as a realm of warfighting activity between the tactical and the strategic. But the German concept of the operational art was flawed at best, and actually came closer to tactics on a grand scale. The flaws in their approach to operations cost the Germans dearly in both world wars.
Through a thorough review of the surviving original operational plans and orders, this book evaluates the German approach to the operational art by analyzing the Ludendorff Offensives of 1918. Taken as a whole, the five actually executed and two planned but never executed major attacks produced stunning tactical results, but ultimately left Germany in a far worse strategic position by August 1918. Among the most serious operational errors made by the German planners were their blindness to the power of sequential operations and cumulative effects, and their insistence in mounting force-on-force attacks, instead of attacking key Allied vulnerabilities.
The Allies, and especially the British, were exceptionally vulnerable in certain elements of their warfighting system. By attacking those vulnerabilities the Germans might well have achieved far better results than by attacking directly into the Allied strength. Specifically, the British logistics system was extremely fragile, and their rail system had two key choke points, Amiens and Hazebrouck. During Operations MICHAEL and GEORGETTE, the Germans came close to capturing both essential rail centers, but never seemed to grasp fully their operational significance. The British and French certainly did. After the Germans attacked south to the Marne during Operation BLUCHER, they fell victims themselves to an inadequate rail network behind their newly acquired lines. At the operational level, then, the respective enemy and friendly rail networks had a decisive influence on the campaign of March-August 1918.

Book Description
Need a blue-ribbon science project? Here’s a treasure trove of super experiments to carry out: construct a simple circuit; exercise a little “Sun Power” with a solar cell; produce carbon dioxide with vinegar and baking soda; hatch some brine shrimp; stop food from spoiling; and lots more. Each project is carefully broken down to show what’s going on at every stage, and includes hints for impressing adults, inquiry ideas, and key terms. What makes this guide extra special, though, is that it also explains how to think like a scientist when choosing an experiment, gathering research, and assembling it all. Plus: advice on displaying the final results in awesome style, and
on animal rights and wrongs, too. Try these and you’ll win.
Customer Reviews:
A good place to start!.......2007-03-05
I have 2 children in 5th and 6th grade who were required to do science fair projects. We started with this book. This book tells you how to do a project and gives you the results and what caused the results. The best part is that after you do the initial experiment (to see if it actually works!!) then it gives "Ideas for Experiments" and lists a number of questions for each project that your child can test for the science fair.
Some of the projects require specialized parts like solar cells, and magnet wire, etc.. which can be hard to find, however if you plan ahead you can order pretty much everything you need on the internet or find it in a specialty/hobby shop. So, before submitting your idea to the teacher be sure you can find all the supplies and TEST the experiment to see if you can get it to work, then pick one of the questions to test and research the answer.
PS Both of my kids won the fair in their age group and recieved an A from projects in this book however, they also put in a lot of work researching their questions and a figuring out why they worked.
