Book Description
Over the past few years software radio has transitioned from an esoteric academic idea to a rapidly commercialising technology that in the coming decade will revolutionise the mobile telecommunications marketplace. Written for industry professionals in engineering and commercial roles, as well as those in academia and research, this book will provide a comprehensive context for all those already active in or entering the field.
Walter Tuttlebee, himself a pioneer of software radio in Europe, has gathered contributions from many of the acknowledged world experts in software radio -leaders operating at the heart of the software radio world today - who share their experience and insight into the background, the present and the future evolution of the technology and the industry. Contributions from North America, Europe and Asia ensure a comprehensive overview of the global SDR scene. The structured approach ensures that the book comprehensively addresses the key issues in the title - the origins of software radio, what has been (and is) driving its commercialisation and what is happening on the international scene
The book includes:
- a comprehensive review of the origins of software radio in the defence industry
- an insider's view of the origins, evolution, role and activities of the SDR Forum
- a summary of the MIT Sloan study into the drivers of global success in the mobile wireless marketplace
- a review of end user and mobile network operator perspectives of software radio and what the value it can offer
- insiders' summaries of recent SDR research activities in Europe and Japan
- coverage of the regulatory issues associated with SDR and the current approaches being taken in North America and Europe, with contributions from the regulators themselves
- a description of the first steps to SDR standards - the ETSI MExE standard
- descriptions of some of the first commercial software defined radio products, for both defence and commercial applications

Book Description
The authors use regulation to explain the antecedents to current welfare developments in Britain. They show how first a Conservative and more recently "New Labour" governments have used in-work benefits so that today they have become the preferred instrument of intervention in the labor market for setting wages. The authors discuss the ways in which these measures address issues of child poverty and the adequacy of incomes, and how far they are disciplining devices to encourage a new moral order.

Nice tribute to Olivia despite some mistakes in film descriptions..........2007-05-16
Any fan of OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND would be glad to get his hands on this handsome book featuring a vast collection of stills from all of her films and some interesting comments on her personal life and the films themselves.
Studded with gorgeous photos, it's a keeper.
As often happens in film books, the author's description for some of the films is not entirely accurate but this is a minor flaw in an otherwise well-written and informative piece of work.
Definitely worth buying if you're a fan of this two-time Academy Award winner who was honored last year by the Academy two weeks before her 90th birthday which was a tremendously successful sold-out event.
Olivia is one of those rare actresses who had a career handed to her on a silver plate, beginning with Shakespeare, just shortly after graduating from high school. Little could she have known that in the course of a year she would be starring in the famous film version, a few years later would go on to play Melanie in GWTW (at 22), would win two Oscars (1946 and 1949), would win a landmark law suit against Warner Bros. when they tried to enforce her contract indefinitely--of which Bette Davis said--"every actor in Hollywood owes her a debt of gratitude"--and would hold onto her reputation as a prestigious actress for fifty years in films.
Fine tribute to a legendary star of the Golden Age.
Great Book.......2007-03-23
Although this book had quite a few errors in the movie descriptions and wasn't 100% accurate, It is still worth owning if you are an Olivia de Havilland fan. The pictures, all black and white, are really great and a lot of them I haven't seen before. I also liked the foreword by Bette Davis, short and sweet.
Fairly accurate Bio. of Miss deHavillands life and work.......1998-10-16
Tony Thomas died in July 1997,just a few days after Olivia deHavilland's 81st.birthday. His work here is,for the most part, the most accurate, and least opinionated,of all the deHavilland Film/Bio-Graphies to date, and his writing on this subject is quoted liberally (Mistakes and all!),in at least one multi-volumed film guide. The introduction by the late Bette Davis is a sincerely kind, and profoundly positive tribute, that can be considered more insightful about Miss deHavilland's personal character, than much else that's written in the book. This book served for me as a starting point for my own research into Olivia deHavilland's work, and on more than one occasion I have found myself being confused, and amused,by viewing one of her films for the first time, and discovering that it didn't quite go the way I had read about it! I discovered (Also from my own research),that he was sometimes short on facts, and slighly over romantic on some points of the deHavilland family history, especially the family of Sir Geoffrey deHavilland (Find out more on him in his autobiography "Sky Fever",and hopefully in Olivia's new autobiography to be released... someday),who was Olivia's uncle ,and who was famous for founding his own British aircraft company. Overall,a good book for it's time, but hopefully, better is yet to come!

Book Description
Think Word Freak with international flair. A nonfiction Ella Minnow Pea with a built-in book-length puzzle. Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose (8) will enthrall (or obsess!) anyone interested in words.
Born and raised in South Africa, at age twenty-one journalist Sandy Balfour went into exile and began traveling the world. While hitchhiking through Nairobi, Cairo, and Moscow, before settling in England, he was introduced to a hobby that has ensnared millions of cognoscenti: the cryptic crossword.
Cryptics offer the ultimate linguistic challenge-leagues beyond Scrabble, more eloquent than The New York Times puzzle. For Balfour, they became both a personal obsession and a way to understand something of himself and his new adopted homeland. Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose (8) weaves the story of Balfour's travels with an insider's account of the pastime called "the world's most remarkable crossword." We meet legendary setters like Araucaria and Bunthorne, learn of great clues such as "Amundsen's forwarding address (4)," and travel the course of Balfour's life from the Ubangi River in the Congo to the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Stamford, Connecticut.
Peppered with anecdotes that explain the workings of cryptic puzzles while also offering a devilish hidden riddle, this book is a crossword lover's must-have and a deliciously engaging account of an outsider who falls in love with a new place.
Customer Reviews:
Strange almost distant autobiography, like the crosswords he loves.......2006-05-05
Sandy Balfour, South African by birth, but foreign in other countries since his 21st birthday, writes his memoir which he links inextricably with crosswords. It has a strange disembodied quality to it. It is almost as though Balfour is narrating someone elses life. It is reflective of the crosswords he adores, that sometimes the clues have layers to them, just like his life seems to be. Nothing, like a cryptic crossword, is straightfoward.
It is a slow and layered biography which seems to be at times oa series of interlinked anecdotes about what happened in his life and how it fits in with the crossword clues of that time. Even the title of the book is a crossword clue and reflects his life.
For those clues he doesn't solve, or even the ones where the answer is in the text there is a page in the back which talks about how to solve the particular clue, in case you didn't understand how the answer of reached. So you get the double benefit of learning to solve cryptic crosswords, if you didn't already know.
I quite liked this book. It was quite a different type of read but enjoyable and I found it oddly compelling. It wasn't that Balfour was a sympathetic character, or even Oprah-like in his confessions. It was such an unusual book and well written which made it so interesting. My only distraction was the at times jerky connection of events which, in the context of a crossword are fine, but didn't work as well for the connection of a series of life events.
Cryptic and Clever.......2005-10-20
This is a clever, quirky little book. The cover says it is a memoir of love, exile and crosswords, but it actually defies categorisation. It isn't really a memoir - the writer is quite selective about which doors of his life are opened to the reader. We know he becomes a crossword afficianado and has a deep fondness for his adopted country (England, he is an ex pat South African) and for his "girlfriend", a title that becomes somewhat grating as the book progresses and she becomes central to his life and the mother of his chidren. But along with a few snippets about his professional life, that's about all he gives away about himself. The story is more a series of recollections of moments in time which he describes for their life importance and for their association with where he was at the same time, in his development as a crypiic crossword afficianado. The originality and cleverness of the book is in the way it is a history of the development of cryptic crosswords and and their setters, and a "how to do them" guide, (arguably a fairly dry subject) which is flavoured up with human interest by being embedded in some important events in the writer's life. Definitely recommended for those who love doing cryptic crosswords and those who aspire to do them. Probably of less interest to those who consider crosswords to be only for nerdy types who need to get a real life. (Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose - answer, rebelled - if you can't work it out and are itching to know why, buy the book!!)
Beautifully written story of love and obsession.......2005-08-24
At first impression this seems to be a wandering memoir focussed on the author's love of crosswords with a few personal details thrown in. But as you read on, it becomes clear Balfour is writing a long love letter to his girlfriend, who introduced him to crossword puzzles. As he explains lucidly how he slowly began to understand the way the puzzles were put together, he slips in more and more details about his girlfriend. As you wonder whether they stayed together, you learn that she is pregnant with their first child. Time passes on, he gets better and better jobs, and suddenly she is giving birth to their third child. This is a wonderful piece of writing and one I cannot recommend highly enough.
Wonderful.......2004-11-12
I wish Balfour had concentrated more on his love of crosswords and less on the memoir. The crossword discussion and examples were fascinating and educational. I've learned a great deal on the art of solving the cryptic variety of crosswords. By the end of the book my chances of solving these clues had gone from none to slim. The deciding factor now is a matter of culture. So many of the clues in the British puzzles relate to British culture and/or slang as well they should. I'm fairing better with the clues in the Games Magazine cryptic crosswords which is a huge step forward for me.
An Faithfully Enjoyable Oboe to the Ear*.......2003-03-15
What can one say that will accurately describe this book?
That it's a marvelous memoir that reads like a novel? Yes!
That it's a special treat for cruciverbalists of the cryptic kind? Most definitely!
That it's quite unlike anything you've ever read? Probably
That Sandy Balfour should just keep writing more and more? Most assuredly!
But, to sum it up in a phrase...?
O.K. *A truly fun read (reed)!!![.]

MS Money 2005 Deluxe: The Missing Manual.......2005-06-05
Either you can bumble around trying to locate MS Money 2005 Deluxe features via complex pulldown menus or online help, or you can buy this book and learn quickly and easily how to navigate and understand the entire program.
The book substitutes for the Help file that should have been installed with the software. It also includes information that doesn't seem to be available from online help. Without the book, for example, I'd never have found the screen for adjusting Tax Estimator tax rates for future years, and I'd never have ventured to prune the automatic payee list for fear of deleting related transactions.
NOT for Business Money 2005.......2004-11-13
I bought this book to go with the Business version of Money 2005. When I opened up the package from Amazon, I was disappointed to find that this book does not cover Business Money. Now, I've got to go through the hassle of packaging it back up for a refund. Thought I'd spare you the same experience.
I already have the 2003 version of this book, and found that one to be a great help in getting familiar with the old program. It's written for beginning users and some of the tips are real time-savers. However, the chapters about basic record-keeping information for small business owners are unnecessary filler. The 2005 version looks to be pretty much the same as the one I have. So if you're just doing personal finance tracking with Money, it's handy to have.
Now, if someone would please write an easy book for businesses that use Money!

Book Description
In Divided Houses, Caroline Ford examines how the so-called feminization of religion in France from the French Revolution to the First World War contributed to the formation of a distinctive secular (laïc) republican political culture in France. She also reveals the effect of women's close association with religion on their civil and social status, which gave rise in France to heated debates about the limits of female agency, women's property rights, and women's role in the family and in society. She argues that religious women were often far more than the passive instruments of a male ecclesiastical hierarchy. In showing that these women could dispose of their bodies, souls, and properties in ways that were unimaginable to their secular counterparts, Ford's book obliges one to rethink the categories of tradition and modernity that have structured most thinking about this subject.
Ford's book is centered on a set of micro-histories and causes célèbres whose narratives are fascinating in and of themselves. They include conflicts within religious orders, the cults of some latter-day female saints, and riveting legal disputes involving women who converted to Catholicism. Perhaps most intriguingly, Ford brings current debates concerning pluralism and cultural difference in France into sharp historical focus. The fact that women have been portrayed as the quintessential carriers of religion ever since France embraced laïcite sheds light on problems faced by the secular French state today as it attempts to regulate religious expressionincluding emblems of Islamin the public sphere.

Book Description
Who seeing the stunning order in networks linking tens upon tens of thousands of variables can fail to entertain a central thought: if ever we are to attain a final theory in biology, we will surely have to see that we are the natural expressions of a deeper order. Ultimately, we will discover in our creation myth that we were expected after all. Stuart Kauffman
Exhilarating photographs and inspiring words take us on a microscopic tour of a miraculous phenomenonthe human bodyleading to a sense that our existence is no accident. This photographic journey into inner space utilizes microscopic imagery to document the beautiful and mysterious realm of the tiniest components of human lifebrain waves, nerve endings, cell structures, acid crystalsrevealing a symmetry, a perfection, and, ultimately, a revelation.
Illuminating quotes from the finest literary and scientific mindsPasteur, Tolstoy, Einstein, St. Augustine, Thoreau, Darwin, just to name a fewsupport the idea that science may prove to be a path to God and that the human brain itself, through what researchers are now calling its "spirituality circuit," is wired to lead us to that path.
With an introduction by Wall Street Journal science editor Sharon Begley, Inside the Mind of God promises to provide further insight into the abiding question: why is there something, rather than nothing?
Three years ago Michael Reagan's best-selling book The Hand of God juxtaposed photographs of spiraling galaxies, shimmering nebulae, and luminous stars with the words of great scientists and philosophers to suggest the profound link between the scientific and the spiritual. Inside the Mind of God, continues this journey, now into inner space. The stunning photographs and inspiring quotes create a sense of wonder and awe in the miraculous evidence of God's hand in the smallest details of our existence.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-06-27
This book has beautiful pictures of various kinds of cells. I only wish that I had known that some of the pictures are of life threatening diseases.
Outstanding Visuals and Inspiring Quotes.......2005-02-24
Upon seeing the title and cover of this book, I picked it up from the bookstore. It is lovely eye-candy! It has a colorful picture of a human brain on the front cover. Always curious as to what is in the mind of God, it was a have-to-have it book.
It combines for the most part beautiful images (and some stunningly beautiful) of the inner body processes blown up to mega-size and, in some cases, resembling a kind of impressionistic art. Even cancer cells have a certain beauty blown up many times their actual size.
Among the many images, with carefully chosen quotations that match each picture so well, are adrenaline crystals; synaptic connections between neurons (brain cells), the flu virus, normal white blood cells, and so much more!
What this kind of compilation does is to bring home the resounding truth that we are a living universe---each of us. We are not so different than the grand Hubble shots of deep space that have become so sought after. While we metaphysicians "knew" this truth intuitively, it is now verifiable by photography. It is a bit like when aura photography came into vogue and made the electromagnetic field accessible visually to the masses.
This is a book of inspiration, and it succeeds grandly in its intent. I highly recommend it to those of you who can be fascinated by your inner workings and inspired by the wonderful quotes which accompany each picture.
Beautiful photos, great quotes.......2004-11-01
Beautiful photographs of brain cells, brain imaging, molecules of neurotransmitters and much more, with exquisitely chosen quotes of scientists who sit on both sides of the divided opinions about whether the brain is the source of mind, or whether spirit embodies itself in the brain (mostly emphasizing the latter).
Here are a few:
There are a limitless number of different sciences, but without one basic science, that is, what is the meaning of life and what is good for the people, all other forms of knowledge and art become idle and harmful entertainment." --Leo Tolstoy (p. 33)
Science can purify religion from error and superstition. Religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.
--Pope John Paul II (p. 84)
I know God won't give me anything I can't handle. I just wish He didn't trust me so much. --Mother Teresa (p. 95)
In the final analysis, the question of why bad things happen to good people transmutes itself into some very different questions, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it happened.
--Rabbi Harold S. Kushner (p. 124)
An excellent holiday gift.
Beautiful and poetic ... and that's just the pictures.......2003-01-09
Pairing startlingly beautiful photographs of the most minute aspects of life -- neurons, cancer cells, adrenaline, anthrax bacillus, embryonic stem cells, sperm and egg, DNA and more -- with great thoughts of scientists, clergy, philosophers, writers, political leaders and artists is utterly ingenious in this book.
For example, a gentle blue photograph of a breast cancer cell appears beside a quote from Mother Teresa: "I know God won't give me anything I can't handle. I just wish He didn't trust me so much."
This book not only offers a glimpse inside the human body and related "landscapes," but also a glimpse of great thinking. I found myself marveling at the photographs and mulling the ideas that appear with them.
Beautiful pictures, lovely words, but . . ........2002-12-14
The idea of this book, if I understand it, is "to suggest the profound link between the scientific and the spiritual" through the juxtaposition of beautiful pictures of "inner space"--in this case of cells, organs, and crystals--with quotes about faith, mystery and belief.
The book starts with a fine essay by Sharon Begley, science editor of the Wall Street Journal. She discusses the thesis that God must exist because of the perfection of the workings of nature--the famous argument from design. She presents some of the arguments for and against it with considerable balance. She also writes about the concept of "biological evil"--the implications of the existence of "evil" things such as disease-causing organisms and cancer cells. She goes on to describe brain-scanning experiments that may help explain how the brain of a meditator or Sufi dancer might create a sense of loss of self and unity with the universe. She concludes by inviting the reader to "see the sacred in the science of life," hoping that the book's microphotographs will bring life's "sacred depths ... to the surface for everyone to appreciate."
The photographs, of neurons and sperm cells, DNA molecules and chromosmes, stem cells and embryos, are remarkable and beautiful. To me they made many of the scientific findings I read about far more real. And the quotes, from spiritually minded scientists like Einstein, poets, philosophers, writers and mystics, were also beautiful. I particularly liked one from Annie Dillard. "The extravagent gesture is the very stuff of creation... The whole show has been on fire since the word go!"
I consider myself to be fascinated with science, and more than casually interested in the great questions that religion addresses as well. I'm as prone to feeling awe at the night sky, the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada or the inner workings of a cell as the next person. Still, for reasons I can't quite figure out, this book didn't bring those two areas any closer for me. I almost feel apologetic, as if I should have felt the awe and mystery that Begley and editor Michael Reagan set out to evoke. In the end, I found the book more puzzling than enlightening, more frustrating than inspiring.
It seems like such a good idea, however, that I hope it will work better for other readers than it did for me.

Book Description
Use of and trade in wildlife is a fact of life for human society around the globe. Article IV of the CITES Convention requires that exporting countries restrict trade in Appendix II species to levels that are not detrimental either to speciesf survival, or to their role within the ecosystems in which they occur (known as the 8non-detriment findinge). Based on two workshops convened by IUCN to develop some pragmatic assistance for Scientific Authorities, this publication presents the background to the development of the non-detriment finding checklist and explains how the checklist itself is designed to work, in the hope that Scientific Authority staff will take and develop the parts of the approach that they find useful.
