Lots of information/poor index.......2003-03-31
Positives:
Contains a huge amount of information - cites many, many studies.
Negatives:
Difficult to find the information because the subject index is so short and undetailed.
Also, I often had to reread whole paragraphs to get their meaning. This is partly due to the author's preference for complex sentence structure; partly due to the APA citation style which forces authors to cram huge citations into the middle of sentences.
Attention Professors thinking about assigning this text!.......2003-02-01
This book is very expensive! I had to buy this book for a course and I hated it. Some of the sentences are 75 words long. I'm totally serious about that. The author speaks an intellectual language that is hard to understand. I hated reading it. The author could have said what he needed to say in about a quarter of the space. Please don't subject your students to this book. There has got to be better (and cheaper) textbooks about career counseling out there.

definitive history of the blues.......2007-08-21
this is a serious history of the blues treating the blues with the same respect & seriousness given jazz, classical and other forms. it is a wonderful book combining interviews with blues legends like muddy waters and howling wolf with in-depth musical and cultural analysis.
for serious blues lovers or the novice looking for a deeper understanding of the music's roots, the culture that spawned and the incredible musicians who created it.

Great blues DVD.......2007-02-21
For someone wanting to get a feel for some relatively modern Delta blues this is a great documentary. Lots of gritty feel to the setting and characters here. The tracks were recorded with great attention to quality. Of especial interest is the portion about RL Burnside as this was his re-discovery! His music career really took off from here! Also, Jesse Mae Hemphill's solo performance is absolute magic, very powerful.
If you like the blues you can't go wrong with this DVD.
Historical Value to Blues genre.......2007-01-04
Deep Blues was refered to me by an artist who amazed me with his talent one night at the Aligator Soul in Everett WA. Ryan played delta blues very well, I saw several folks in the crowd stop eating their meal to listen to this man in his 30's belting out the blues on his dobro. After his show I talked with him asking him how he came to know delta blues so well. He said he had watched "you see me laughing" and many video's on blues but desired to see "Deep Blues". As a blues artist and fan I had to have this video so I bought it, I have watched it several times over and will continue to draw from the rich history of where it started, learning from many of the artists the main stream has not heard of, simply put Deep Blues is a must for blues fans and aspiring artists alike it will help you keep the blues alive.
If you love the blues, you'll love this.......2006-11-03
This is a great documentary of true Mississippi Delta Blues. I've been searching for this since it was first released in 1992 and finally found it on Amazon. I've had the soundtrack since 1992 and still consider it one of my all-time best blues recordings. If you love the blues, you'll love this and I promise you won't be disappointed.
Book Description
Brottman offers up a study of movies so offensive, some are practically unwatchable. From the ever-popular Faces of Death movies to purported snuff films, from classic B-movies such as The Tingler, to more popular but no less controversial films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Brottman takes a wide-eyed look at movies most folks watch only through parted fingers.
While most critics have been quick to dismiss such films as mere shock-fests (if they even bother to talk about them at all), Brottman argues that these movies tell us quite a bit about who we are as a society, what makes us anxious, and what taboos we truly believe cannot be crossed. Part anthropology, part psychoanalysis, Offensive Films vivisects these movies in order to figure out just what about them is so offensive, obscene, or bizarre. In the end, Brottman proves that these films, shunned from the cinematic canon, work on us in sophisticated ways we often choose to remain unaware of.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting subject chocked full of erroneous information.......2007-06-24
The topic of taboo and "offensive films" is truly a fascinating subject. It help even more if you're a die hard fan of these films. Naturally, if one likes viewing these films, reading research on the films should be fun and interesting as you explore further and further into the dark realms of the bizarre and obscurity. This read, however, is nothing but frustrating for any person with exploitation background, as it's convoluted with incorrect information and bad research.
As I mentioned, the biggest problem with this book is just wrong information across the board. Not only does Miss Brottman get film dates wrong, she gets chronological order wrong, character names wrong, actors' roles wrong, hell, she even mixes up films (for instance, Deep River Savages by Umberto Lenzi was NOT released in 1981; it was released in 1972. IT started the "cannibal genre", NOT Deodato's Last Cannibal World, which was released in 1977, NOT 1975).
Another short coming that I was frustrated with is the miniscule depth Brottman takes on the subject of Mondo films. She briefly (and when I say briefly, I mean BRIEFLY) touches on the works of Jacopetti, Prosperi, Climati, Morra, and the Castiglionis, the true godfathers of the genre, and then spends the rest of the chapter focusing on direct-to-video compilation death films, such as Faces of Death, Traces of Death, and Death Scenes. These films are a disgrace to the Mondo name and is lame exploitation that makes fun of victims and are meant for sickos' to get their rocks off on. Nothing on the Mondo Cane series, the Savage Trilogy, or the Africa series by the Castiglionis is discussed in ANY detail. More, she mentions the names as part of the genre's history and dives face first into bad topics (also chocked full of erroneous information).
The topics on the more mainstream films (such as Freaks and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) are more correct and professional (though years are often incorrect), but information on these films is much more readily accessible, which would probably be why their sections are more accurate. Also, books dedicated entirely to that one film are available, with more substance, history, and information all together. Those looking for good research on obscure films then should beware.
Overall, it's a mess. A simple check into all of these films' backgrounds will be able to point to the errors of Miss Brottman's information. Plus, most of the information really is nothing new. I was disappointed in the fact that I ordered this book for research, but was unable to cite anything that I didn't already know (or, again, covered by different books in much more depth). An interesting read for Miss Brottman's opinions, but a very unwise choice for good, solid factual information.
Great Topic, Good Execution.......2006-11-18
This book is a welcome addition to a genre with far too few titles available. The serious critical analysis of "other" cinema is almost entirely unavailable in book form. That said the main shortcomings of this book are the first two essays. The otherwise excellent essay on Tod Browning's "Freaks" is over long and a bit repetitive. And the essay on Castle's "The Tingler" over reaches on a few scatological connections/conclusions. These are minor problems with an otherwise informative and scholarly text on a subject most would not consider worthy of such attention. As a fan of non-mainstream cinema, I wish there were more books like this and I hope the author continues delving deeply into similar subject matter.
A list of the nearly unwatchable film.......2006-03-18
Here's a unique approach: a survey of movies so offensive, some are nearly unwatchable. Here are your classic B films, your films which sparked controversies, and your productions featuring freaks, shocks, and more. But OFFENSIVE FILMS isn't just a listing of plots: it provides social commentary, film criticism, and psychoanalysis alike to discern what makes the production offensive, obscene or strange. An excellent survey into the offensive world of cinematic productions which forces readers to reflect on shock values and their methods and intentions.
No jargon, smooth read........2005-12-03
This book was helpful to me in a grad course I took on horror films. Although its an academic book, its not too hard to read, not too much theory or jargon, like similar books. Also the author treats these movies tongue-in-cheek. He's not claiming they're great films, just that they effect you in a certain way. Better than most academic books about horror films. Could use more pictures.

Book Description
The films discussed in this book have been labeled cinema vomitif because they induce a visceral response in their audience. They are an underground hybrid of slasher movies, exploitation films, and shock-u-mentaries. Taking a serious look at a taboo subject, Brottman argues that these scandalous films are of far more substance than has been previously assumed. Their consistent appeal to our repressed appetites, libidinal instincts, and fascination with flesh and death has much to tell us about the human condition. Films analyzed include the voyeuristic Freaks (1932), the traumatic psychodrama The Tingler (1959), the succes de scandale The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1976), the Italian shocker Cannibal Holocaust (1983), and two recent series of "live death" shock-u-mentaries, Death Scenes and Faces of Death (1989-1994). These movies, shunned from mainstream cinema because they are too offensive, obscene, marginal or bizarre, are considered here for the first time as an important part of the cinematic canon.

Even those that aren't fans of the genre will love this book.......2000-10-23
Offensive films is the definative scourse for info on the movies of Binema Vomitif. The only book of its kind on these kinds of flicks, it is original in the fact that it doesn't just give a run down of the films, but a complete history of its making, the makers, and its impact on the genere in general. For those who love these types of films for any reason. GREAT.

Good.......1999-04-24
The book content is extreamly good, however the way the book is bound makes it break very easily. If you are patient and good with library tape you will enjoy this book. Based on content alone 5 stars--but with it falling apart on you it's not that great.

Johned.......2006-11-06
Ordered this new edition because of my experience with earlier ones.
This edition lacks the CD which the other edition contained.
The format of this edition is not done as well as the previous one.
I am dissapointed in it's new format and lack of CD.
Not what I expected.......2006-11-05
I am not a very technically savvy guy with a computer. I was looking for a book to explain to me how I can upgrade my computer and keep it in fairly good maintenance. I saw this one and it seemed to have a good description. It turns out this book is massive, but most of it is devoted to computer peripherals. I was not impressed because it is not a very user friendly book and didn't have more of what it was titled to be. It would be an excellent book for someone that has a lot of time and already should know most of this stuff and what's to change their peripherals mostly.
Many errors - disappointing.......2006-08-28
Minasi's earlier editions were good (and hardcover - what happened to that?). This one was apparently rushed out without any proofreading just to keep up with the Joneses (Mueller). There are so many errors in the first two chapters, it's unbelievable... Maybe the rest of the book actually got re-written and proofed, but the first part is very disappointing and makes me unlikely to grab this volume when I need an accurate answer.
E.G.
p.17 figure 1.5 shows connectors on back of PC, points to a Centronics 36 connector, labeling it a 25-pin parallel port. Same figure labels a DB-25 port (male? female?) as "External SCSI". (Could be, if a VERY old scsi card is in there... )
p.17 "... be the expert on how many millions of polygons a particular sound card can render per second." Huh?? Since when did sound cards start rendering geometric shapes?
p.22 "Quick Steps: Installing a CPU" gives 6 steps. No mention of heatsinks/fans. Just pop it in, button up the case, and get the marshmallows ready!
The Complete PC Upgrade and maitenance Guide.......2005-09-26
Who want to work in computer repair then need this book.
clear instructions .......2005-09-11
Sybex and the authors have updated this long running and successful text with the 16th edition. The rapid changes in personal computer hardware mean that you might want to consider getting this book for its comprehensive advice of a wide range of hardware items.
I should say that even with the changes in this industry, if you have the 14th or 15th editions, you may well want to stick with those. Not everything changes between consecutive editions, and those still hold considerable relevance.
The book's remit extends across a broad range of hardware. Not just items that might be directly plugged into your computer. For example, there is discussion about routers for your local network. Where these might be wired or wireless devices.
Typically, across all the hardware they describe, there is enough information to be able to install that hardware, even without the manufacturers' instructions. Sometimes, the book's instructions may even be clearer!

Book Description
This monograph gives a tutorial treatment of new approaches to self-organization, adaptation, learning and memory. It is based on recent research results, both mathematical and computer simulations, and lends itself to graduate and postgraduate courses in the natural sciences. The book presents new formalisms of pattern processing: orthogonal projectors, optimal associative mappings, novelty filters, subspace methods, feature-sensitive units, and self-organization of topological maps, with all their computable algorithms. The main objective is to provide an understanding of the properties of information representations from a general point of view and of their use in pattern information processing, as well as an understanding of many functions of the brain. In the third edition two new discussions have been added and a proof has been revised. The author has developed this book from Associative Memory - A System-Theoretical Approach (Volume 17 of Springer Series in Communication and Cybernetics, 1977), the first ever monograph on distributed associative memories.
