Tinsley has just been arrested for drunk driving...again. Just another moralizing right-winger who can't walk the walk. There are a lot of those around these days. His comic strip is just as pathetic.

I read this comic( and books) and it's not funny in any of the sense of politcal humor, It is not even drop dead funny or sneaks up on you like great comics like Ted Rail, Doonesbury, or The Boondocks.At least there is some humor in P.J. O'Rourke's writings or when he edited the "National Lampoon". but Mallard Fillmore is just an excuse to vent Tinsley's politcal predjuices against Black Americans and so-called other liberal groups he dislikes. Hey Tinsley, If you are going to do "racial hunor" with a duck at least be funny.

Strawman Argument Much?.......2006-05-22

I sincerely hope people don't take the Mallard Fillmore strips as an accurate representation of liberal views. I have occasionally agreed with some of the comics i.e. This Sunday's (May 21, 2006) about how so much time is spent focusing on the "racism" in opposing illegal immigration than those trying to get into the country legally are overlooked and ignored. But these occasional good points do not make up for the excessive use of the "strawman argument" where the opposition's argument is stripped of all logic and made to look like the inane ramblings of a political moron. Just so people can laugh at them and feel better about themselves.

Fair and balanced? No. Avoids cheapshots? Yeah right. I'll stick with political comics that actually present the oppositions real argument, as opposed to a dumbed-down version that only a fool would actually agree with.

Take a look at the negativity directed at my reviews of Boondocks (a current liberal fave) at the hypocrisy its creator calling Rush Limbaugh a racist for involving race in his material, yet Boondocks constantly deals with race

When Al Capp of Lil Abner fame became a conservative in the 60's, suddenly the former liberal darling had his strip drop from 900 to 400 newspapers.

Mallard's author has never condemned Doonsbury or Boondocks for their anti-conservative viewpoints, thus is not guilty of hypocrisy.

I read Mallard Fillmore for news the 90% liberal media will not print like racism and sexism from black leaders and feminists, intolerance from educational systems and unions, etc

Mallard Fillmore is like that All in the Family episode where they are playing a game and the Liberal Mike Stivic, who regulary pats himself on the back for being sensitive toward blacks (unlike the conservative Archie Bunker), can't take the black person Lionel claiming he is insensitive because Mike does it for selfish reasons.

It takes a lot of guts to say negative things about the "tolerant?", hypocrital left, given the intolerance they express when they don't like something, and do it in an entertaining and humorous manner

P.S. Why does amazon allow a no vote. It only creates a situation where people who can't take opinions who differ from themselves to enact petty revenge

It is a real shame that this book is out of print becuase it is one of the funniest books I have ever read in my entire life. It is laugh out loud, roll around the floor funny. It has moved into a tie with Calvin and Hobbes for the single funniest collection of comics I own.

Mallard Fillmore must be the single most unfunny comic strip in wide syndication today. But that should come as no surprise, seeing as it comes from a knee-jerk right-winger who was recently arrested for driving under the influence, which shows how little respect for the law and consideration for the safety and well-being of others he actually has.

The hateful, humor-free content does, however, expose the more vicious side of the conservative movement -- and thereby does it no credit. Conservatives do in fact have some good ideas, but they are not well-served by spite-filled "allies" like cartoonist Tinsley.

Maybe if he'd take a hiatus from the concept side of the cartoon and let Dennis Miller do the writing... naah, I doubt Tinsley's smart enough to consider the idea...

In a way, it's sad to say that Mallard Fillmore is just as on point today as ever. Liberalism still suffers from the same tried-but-false world views and tactics. No wonder this book receives such diverse reviews -- it lampons the fallacies and faux pas of liberalism very effectively. Best of all, there are no "cheap shots" -- just a very clear mirror on the subject, with enough light to expose the flaws and weakneses in leftist thinking. One of my most treasured books!

If you are tired of gagging on the poorly drawn, wildly inaccurate doonsebury, then sit back and enjoy a strip that is well-crafted and well-thought out. One has to wonder about some of the reviewers who panned this comic. Did they actually read it- or are they once again mindlessly spewing the party line? editing?.......2006-10-15

I'm reading this book right now, and I'm amazed it went to print with so many grammatical errors, particularly agreement problems. (For instance, the author repeatedly begins sentences with plural subjects and then uses singular verb forms.) There are also many typos. It's really unbelievable. There must be at least one error on every page. The book brings up some interesting ideas and criticisms of the growth of pop psychology and Western culture's reliance on therapy, but good lord, the errors are incredibly distracting! I just had to comment on it because I can't believe how bad the editing is.

Good subject, poor execution.......2005-12-02

I was excited when I found out about this book, because I agree with the author's overall thesis. I really wanted to like the book, but I came away sadly disappointed.

Furedi has some interesting ideas, but his writing is needlessly dense and dreary. Granted, this is an academic work, but still -- a good editor could probably bring this book to life. As it stands, however, the overall subject matter is interesting, but the book is almost unreadable.

For a much better treatment of essentially the same topic, see "One Nation Under Therapy", by Christina Hoff Sommers and Sally Satel.

Fascinating ideas but poorly edited.......2005-02-13

Furedi's interesting book explores how self-reliance and problem-solving through informal relationships have been gradually replaced by a therapeutic culture that, by medicalising everyday behaviour, encourages helplessness and promotes new forms of social control.

This book was well worth the read because the ideas were so fascinating, but one could be put off by the atrocious copy editing. Compared with Furedi's earlier well-edited "Paranoid Parenting," "Therapy Culture" had numerous distracting grammatical and spelling errors. It would have deserved a higher rating had it been better edited.

Awesome companion book..........2006-08-15

For those of you looking to get a little more horsepower from, or get some adavanced tips and tricks for Sonar 5 Producer and Studio. I currently own all three books in the series (Ignite!, Power!, and Overdrive!), and each one has its own set of merrits. Ignite is set to the beginner and lets face it, sometimes we forget even some common everyday tasks and it is good to have a quick reference guide to refresh our memories. Power is great for picking up in more of a tutorial format many of the features covered in the manual that accompanies the software, and Overdrive goes beyond that to help optimize the use of Sonar 5. You can never have too many references at hand. If you are serious about recording and productivity, having these volumes close at hand will save at having to seek out tech support and the long distance fees associated with it.

Pretty good........2006-04-25

This is my second Sonar Book, the first being Sonar 4 Power (the beginner series). I skipped over Sonar 5 Power since I already had most of the basics down and could pick up on any new changes in the Sonar 5 version pretty quickly. Overall, I found this book pretty helpful and like the Sonar Power series, easy to understand. It doesn't bother explaining control locations or definitions to you like the other series and gets right down to the nitty gritty. It goes more in depth on a few issues (creating better groove-clips, using v-vocal clips, customizing windows [even modifying the sonar ini file]), as well as lots of time-saving short-cuts. While it took me only one day to get through the 250 or so pages and I only really treasured a handful of tips, I definitely consider them worth the $25 the book retails for. Also makes a handy reference.

I work with Sonar for some years now. I was looking for some great tips on Sonar in several user forums. I don't have to anymore. They're all in this book! Well, a lot anyway. Not the obvious tips, like how to install Sonar, but really great things you always wanted to know (but where afraid to ask...). Love it!

This is the book that I'm buying. On the cakewalk site they mention 4 different books concerning sonar 5.0. Sonar 5.0 CSi is for complete novices and includes things such as setting up your folders (audio files get big), importing audio into tracks and hitting the record button. Sonar Power is more complete guide that will give you an overview of much of the features. Some you will use more than others (sorry I've never needed the advanced CAL techniques). Overdrive may be short on the topic side (8 chapters ex. editing, midi, automation, mastering) but its designed for advanced users in mind,so here's hoping that they go in depth, (I'm a home studio sonar user since 2.0). Worst case scenario if i need some expert advice i could always try the forum, some people doing some complex work on there.

Excellent overview of geological history.......2005-07-02

I am reviewing this book, published in 1988, in mid 2005, after having bought it at a small university town used book store. I had heard good comments about the text many years ago, but never got around to getting a copy. Now that I have, I can say that the book exceeded my preconceptions. There are a great many new findings and new interpretations since the book was first published. As it is now, the material is dated. I wish the author had written an update within the past 3 or so years to reflect advancements in geology and paleobiology. But he hasn't. However, dated or not, the book has a lot to offer -- one can still learn a great deal from the text.

With various related side issues interspersed throughout the discussion, the author takes the reader from the early Hadean to the Holocene. The emphasis is clearly on geology, but with the biology of the related periods discussed as well. Academics will be pleased with the comprehensive use of references; it's a wonderful source book.

The author stresses the earlier Eras, with aome 200 of the total 480 actual text pages dealing with Eras prior to the Paleozoic. That's some 42% of the text. The Paleozioc is given 40 pages, the Mesozoic a little over 30, and the Cenozoic about 70. Intermittent ancillary chapters discuss such topics as 1) the origin of the solar system, 2) radiometric, fossil, and paleomagnetic dating methods, and 3) evolution and causes of extinction. For those with a particular interest in PreCambrian geology, I know of no better second level text in the area.

I recommend reading the book together with current source materials. Anyone with an introductory geology course in his or her background will be prepared to read the book. It is useful to both the professional as well as the general scientifically literate commuinity. It will be well worth the effort.
