5 out of 5 stars I am bleak no longer!.......1999-03-11

Rich Hall is pure comic genius!! Now that it is out of print, I'm going to laminate every page of my copy. How I will resist the temptation to share this with my friends and risk not getting it back, I do not know, my friend.

Hall provides a tongue-in-cheek approach to the self-help genre by theorizing that life rides on four tires: love, career, mental-physical, and spiritual. Packed with amusing insights and helpful "tips for the day" (e.g. if you like to speed, get a license plate with the word "void" on it, so that when you get a speeding ticket...), this book is guaranteed to make you laugh 'til you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A book that banishes bleakness at its roots!.......1999-02-11

Rich Hall's book will get you rolling out of the rut on all four wheels. Hilarious daily advice.

It might seem like a joke -- but laughter heals. Rich Hall rocks.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2007-08-03

For teaching drumset, this is the method I love. The book teaches reading and counting by way of many different beats/grooves in simple 1 and 2 measure phrases. If you do the different variations for each beat as described in the front of the book your coordination will go through the roof!

I still like to use Haskell Harr for rudimental teaching. Using them both together gives students the best of both worlds.

I highly recommend this book. (And for the younger students, get the one written for younger kids).

The only negative thing about this book is that they didn't make each exercise a seperate CD track so some of them are hard to locate. If they did that, it would be perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Great All Round Book.......2007-05-17

Its a classic, a must have. 9 out of 10 drummers you talk to will tell you they own a copy and played through it at some point in their drumming career. Its a great all round book that shows you a lot of drumming aspects like beats, fills, time signatures and so on... everything you need to learn as a beginner. I would say the only drawback is that its not for complete beginners... perhaps it would be a good second or third book.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Realistic Rock.......2007-05-14

This time tested volume still offers a great foundation for beginner to intermediate level drummers. The cd's are a nice addition but only provide 'performance' tempo examples of some of the exercises, as opposed to something that assists the student in progress from a learning tempo to 'realistic' bpm. It also would benefit from more one and two handed 16th note exercises that are written out as opposed to being a variation of the recommended 18 different ways to use the book. I understand that there is an upcoming dvd to accompany the book and cd's. Looking forward to it Carmine!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One, But Not For Beginners.......2007-05-02

This book is not the way to go if you've never played drums before or know little about how to make your way around a kit, don't read drum music or don't know how to count beats/understand time signatures. If you are an absolute beginner, I would highly recommend you start out with a real life lesson or at least find a place (website or book) to learn some basic rock beats using 4/4 time and learn how it all looks written out properly.

For a more intermediate player, this book is a great tool to use to brush up on some troublesome areas of your playing. I found that it was a great supplement to those times when I was just hitting a wall with my creativity. The book offers some good lessons in odd time signatures, fills and double bass playing. Each lesson gives a few bars of examples which increase in complexity until it ultimately leads to big, multi-bar exercise at the end of each unit which ties it all nicely together.

For beginners - try elsewhere first and come back to this one later.
For intermediate and experienced players - go for it! It's a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of material!.......2007-03-08

This book is great for beginner and intermediate drummers. My husband, who's also a drummer, bought this book for me when i started playing. I found it very hard at first, but moved back to it after playing through MelBay's "teach yourself drums" which was much more user friendly for the raw beginner, especially in the fills section. This book has so much material and covers all the essentials like the James Brown beat and cool variations. There are 16 bar longer practices after the one line exercises, I think it's a cool format and the longer sections. This book helped me to advance a lot and I only completed a portion.

          Book Description

According to Edward Edinger, we are in the midst of a monumental cultural change that will end the world as we know it. This is the result of the increasingly powerful force of our collective unconscious, the Apocalypse archetype. This archetype manifests itself through various signs: the drama of international relations, the breakdown of social structure, and the widening gap between political, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic groups, in science fiction and New Age books, TV, and movies. The public's preoccupation with natural disasters and the rise of religious cults and survivalist sects are other indicators. In ten chapters Edinger analyzes the Book of Revelation from this Jungian perspective. Case histories include David Koresh and the Heaven's Gate cult.

3 out of 5 stars lots about Jung, less about Revelation.......1999-12-30

As the co-author of my own book on Revelation ("Unveiling Empire: Reading Revelation Then and Now" [Orbis 1999]), I am always interested in new approaches to this ancient text. While Dr. Edinger was obvious an expert in Jungian psychology, his skills as a biblical exegete are wanting. His interpretation relies almost exclusively on his impressionistic reaction to the text from a Jungian perspective, and the eclectic interpretation of Revelation from scholar JM Ford, whose work has been strongly critiqued by scholars.

If you are already a Jungian, you'll feel confirmed by this book. If you're looking for a reading of Revelation that respects both its historical and biblical contexts, look somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars A lucid description of apocalyptic psychology........1999-10-05

Once again Edinger turns his analyst's eye on a seminal topic--in this case, the apocalypse archetype--and provides useful interpretations and amplifications. The book's one drawback is the degree to which Edinger's rather fundamental Jungianism shows through...proving the book's thesis that it's easy to become possessed by this particular archetype. Recommended. -- Craig Chalquist, M.S., designer of the "To Thine Own Self" Web site.

                  Book Description

This book is a complete presentation of standard FORTRAN 77 with special applications of numerical methods in science and engineering. It surpasses the coverage of its best-selling predecessor, FORTRAN 77 for Engineers and Scientists, Third Edition, by adding a current introduction to Fortran 90. This book emphasizes sound structured programming and software engineering principles; its clear and concise presentation is perfect for readers who possess a background in algebra, with no previous programming experience.

4 out of 5 stars Gives good examples of real world applications.......2007-07-31

I have been using this book to teach an introductory university-level mechanical engineering class that emphasizes computer programming. This book adequately covers all important topics in Fortran and contains many real-world engineering applications (such as solving for roots).

The examples are well commented, which is great for students who are beginning to learn how to program.

I feel that this book is designed for someone who has very little experience in computer programming and I would not recommend this book to someone who is already well-versed in other computer languages. A much smaller book, such as "Schaum's Outline of Programming With Fortran 77 (Schaum's Outlines)," would be better for advanced programmers who want to learn Fortran.

                  1 out of 5 stars Unacceptable printing........2005-02-02

I am returning this item because the printing is unacceptably poor. The book is softbound and yet the pages appear to be photocopies, and not good ones. The syntax definitions (the most important part, for me), are in gray-on-gray box text that, in this printing, is almost unreadable.

4 out of 5 stars Good and Solid Presentation of the FORTRAN language.......1998-01-10

An excellent way for begginers to understand the structure of FORTRAN. Useful also for experienced programmers with a detailed index table.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction -- But Nothing More.......2006-03-25

"Introduction to FORTRAN 90" will get you on the road to programming in FORTRAN 90 post haste. The foundations of the langauge are covered thoroughly and clearly with plenty of good examples.

But FORTRAN 90 is a big language and it is not well served in this rather limited volume. Much that is useful and important in FORTRAN 90 you will find no mention of here. If you are doing some serious real-world programming, you will outgrow this book in, I predict, less than three months.

Maybe this is a good buy if you know flat nothing about the language and want to start learning. But mind your budget, because if you continue FORTRAN90 programming you're going to need something better before long.

                  5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed.......2005-07-22

I needed a book to get up and running in my new job as a Fortran programmer. This was just the book to do that! My job is in the engineering field and the book not only covered code that pertained to engineering concepts, but it also covered the necessary code and syntax that I was likely to encounter in the custom-built program that I will be maintaining/enhancing. It was just the right amount of delivery without being too much--enough to get my skill set updated. I would buy it again. It was worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what it advertises........2000-01-04

This book is quite appropriately named. It teaches the reader Fortran 90 in a clear, concise, and logical manner, exactly as an Engineer or Scientist would expect. This book goes a step beyond teaching Fortran by trying to teach the reader good programming style, common algorithms, and logic traps to avoid. Most all the examples relate in some way to problems commonly solved by Engineers and Scientists, thus showing how using the language can benifit and enhance the readers professional cababilities. However, this book does have its downfalls. A couple of the code examples have small errors in them, and certain topics are not covered as well as others. Overall, I believe this is an excellent book that does a great job of teaching the reader to program in Fortran 90.

Laszlo claims we are just now moving beyond the Iron Age and what comes next is not clear. The worse things get, however, the more people will work for improvement. What we need is general agreement that all should live "in a way that allows all other people to live as well." Unbridled consumption is the way to global destruction. Like David Korten (The Great Turning), Laszlo optimistically looks to all those who meditate, eat wisely, recycle, etc. as the vanguard of the new age.

I very rarely review more than one book by the same author, but in this case it is absolutely justified.

In the 1960s the Club of Rome was one of the first organizations to declare that there were "limits to growth." Today that seems so obvious, but then the very idea stirred up a hornet's nest of opposition.

There are still plenty of people who are convinced that either there is no problem, or that we are going to innovate our way out of any potential difficulties.

Many other experts are now of the opinion that we have left everything too late, and that we are on an inevitable downward path toward oblivion.

In Ervin Laszlo's new book, he acknowledges the seriousness of our situation, but is one of the hardy band of pioneers who see the problems as a "decision window" where we face not only the danger of total global collapse, but also the opportunity for renewal of the world.

We all of us need to change the way in which we see the world and then to take action.

Or else we shall probably not be here that much longer.

This message is indeed very positive.

According to the author, we just need to wake up. And this book outlines a precise map for doing exactly that.

                      Highly recommended.

THE CHAOS POINT: THE WORLD AT THE CROSSROADS predicts we have seven years to avoid global collapse and promote strategies for renewal - and tells how the modern world will change in that period of time. Chapters maintain we're at a critical junction in history and comes from the founder of systems philosophy and general evolution theory: THE CHAOS POINT builds upon his principles and surveys trends, how to head them off, and how to build a more sustainable world.

I found this book to be profoundly important for all to read at this time in history. It is a true wake-up call to everyone, certainly in the U.S., but also for the whole planet. A must read.

This is a well written book by an author with an outstanding international reputation. The condition of the earth and human culture today is at a critical crossroad. Conditions may either get better for most of the people on the planet or they may become so bad that human life here may be destroyed.

This book should receive world wide publicity with encouragement for as many people as possible to read it. Then we need to insist that our leaders begin immediately to take steps to choose the best action for the welfare of all humans and our planet.

                      Book Description

In the world of modern science, consciousness is reduced to a fading epiphenomenon, left over after the brain has been physically explained. It seems to arise when matter is suitably organized, but scientists and philosophers have been unable to explain why complex organization should produce anything beyond complex physical behavior. Yet consciousness won't go away.

One possibility is that, instead of being produced by matter, consciousness is a separate element, added to physical systems. This can be modeled using the idea of a virtual reality, in which a human subject enters a computer-simulated world through a sensory interface. In this book, virtual reality is used as a metaphor for our situation as conscious beings. The basic theme is that what we can imagine doing in a virtual reality system may actually be happening in nature on a vastly greater scale. Nature may be like a computer simulation interfaced with conscious observer/participants.

This groundbreaking book shows how conscious beings could interact with a physically realistic virtual world. It shows how paranormal phenomena can be reconciled in a natural way with the laws of physics, and it sheds light on paradoxes of time, on life beyond the body, and on cosmic and terrestrial evolution. In a sweeping synthesis, the ideas and data of modern science are used to illuminate the ancient theme of consciousness in a world of illusion.

Richard Thompson has done a wonderful job in this book, delving into all kinds of topics, from Deterministic Chaos, Turing Machines, Relativity, Quantum Mechanics to all kinds of psychic and paranormal phenomena while maintaining the overall theme of the book - exploring the possibility that the world we live in may not be the real world. I won't be surprised if 100 years from now, Richard Thompson is hailed as a scientist at par with Einstein, though I feel his insights are better than what Einstein had - after all, even Einstein was wrong some times. But Richard Thompson seems to raise points which no sane scientist can refuse. It is a pity he is not yet recognized for his outstanding writings.
