A clever, witty retrospective.......2000-04-08
This is a wonderful little retrospective, with some very creative and funny observations. If you are anywhere between 25 and 45, the memories will come flooding back (and if you're like me, some embarrassment, too). It is also peppered with some great cartoon illustrations, a seventies quiz ("The 70's SATs") and a music anthology. Well worth it!
A hilarious book for everyone who lived through the 70's!.......1998-05-14
This book really had my friends and me rolling on the floor with laughter! What a great collection of memories of this stupid decade-- the people, the fads, the TV shows and music. It's great for parties or just to have lying on your coffee table-- but watch out, your friends will try to steal it (unless they're really groovy). Highly recommended!!!

Memories of John Lennon
ASIN: 0762429666 |
Book Description
John Lennon-working class hero, rebel with a cause, citizen of the world. He would have been 65 this year.
A quarter of a century after his death, the questions remain: what was John Lennon really like, what drove him to the heights of creativity and the depths of despair, and why do his music and message still resonate for millions around the world? Now acclaimed broadcast journalist and author Larry Kane uncovers the mysteries of Lennon's life and implodes the myths surrounding it. Kane definitely has the right credentials for the job. He was the only American reporter who traveled in the Beatles' official entourage to every stop on their history-making first American tours, and he stayed in touch with Lennon until an assassin ended the former Beatle's life.
Lennon Revealed is filled with revelations about John Lennon's path from public glory to personal destruction, and ultimately to the inspiring rebirth that defines a triumph of the spirit. Drawing on extensive personal accounts and extraordinary new interviews with more than 50 confidants and experts-most notably, with Yoko Ono-Kane brings the reader closer than ever to the man who, in life and in death, has had a singular impact on humanity. Kane also provides stunning new information about Lennon's relationships with Ono, his childhood soulmate Stuart Sutcliffe, his lover May Pang, and Beatles manager Brian Epstein. The book includes an exclusive DVD featuring the final filmed interview with Lennon and Paul McCartney, conducted by Larry Kane in 1968. Brief clips from this famous interview have appeared in just a few places, including the official documentary Imagine
Customer Reviews:
oh, well!.......2007-07-19
As a Beatles and a John Lennon fan, I was looking forward to this book... parts were interesting--but, I guess, it was the telling of it, the very writing itself, that was lacking. It seemed a gratuitous effort of a has-been journalist to slap us in the face with "I knew John Lennon!"... (okay, we get the picture, you don't have to keep mentioning it every other page...)--an attempt to attach his name to a legend through all the typical sensationalist-journalistic machinations... I won't say it's completely irredeemable--it has its moments when it does actually seem to actually be about John Lennon... but I can also see why it so quickly made its way to the discount bin......
A Must Read!.......2007-05-18
Lennon Revealed is a MUST READ for every Lennon fan who wants to get closer to the truth about John. I've read everything from Ray Coleman's Lennon bio, to John by Cynthia, May Pang's book, Nowhere Man and even that horrible Lives of John Lennon by Goldman - all of them were good in their own ways [except for Goldman's] but I feel that Kane's book is much closer to the truth because he doesn't place a biased theme on John Lennon - it's like he lets the people he interviews tell the story for us and it is up to us readers to make up our minds about John Lennon through them, while those other books are mostly based on the biased point of view of the writer - The Truth is always somewhere in the middle, so it is best to hear everyone's story before coming down to a decision.
I also likes Ray Coleman's Lennon bio just as much as this book by Kane, but I feel Kane's is more complete because he did add May Pang into the mix. If Coleman only had interviewed Pang's point of view, I would've considered his book the most definitive of all the Beatles bios.
So far of all the Beatles and John Lennon bio books that's worth your money, I can truly recommend Lennon Revealed, The Beatles Anthology, The Beatles by Bob Spitz.
Interesting and Entertaining.......2007-04-04
I couldn't decide whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars, but I really did enjoy reading it,and I would recommend it to anyone who is facinated by John and wants to know as much as possible. There is new info. to be found here, hence the 4 stars. However,I do have a problem with Larry Kane: first, his writing style: He repeats the same words constantly, like in the forward about Dec.8th 1980,he uses the word "fateful night" so many times that it begins to feel like a school report by a 14 year old. Someone buy this man a thesauras! Hey, I hear computers have them built right in now,Larry! His writing is very amatuerish. My second problem with Larry Kane is that he seems to have an agenda: his use of phrases like,"John Lennon and the Beatles" instead of what they were really called, uhh I think it's The Beatles. I love John too but I've never seen anyone who loves one member of the group so much that he reduces the others into almost non existence. It is down right creepy. The Beatles were an ensemble. They weren't Buddy Holly and the Crickets or Elvis Presley and the Jordinares. One reviewer said it very well: 'Larry gives the other Beatles such short shrift that if you didn't know better you would think that almost everyone else was more important in his life than the 3 men who's lives were entwined with his daily, for 2 decades.' Yes at the end of the book this is rectified but the damage is already done. Which brings me to Stuart Sutcliff and his sister Pauline. As others have said,Larry gives her way too much creedance in his book and I don't think that was a good idea because Pauline has an agenda also. She wants people to beleive that her brother was more important than he actually was. She tells Larry that John and Stu spent every waking moment together every single day. Paul?...Paul who? What about all those days spent at 20 Forthlin Road writing all those Lennon McCartney originals? What about the bond between John and Paul over the loss of their mothers? None of that is mentioned. I'm not saying that Stu wasn't important to John or that he wasn't ONE of his best friends. But Larry has the audacity to describe Stuart as one of the four loves of Lennon's life along with Cyn,Yoko, and May Pang. C'mon! The idea of a homosexual relationship isn't even the issue. Maybe John and Stu were physically close. After all John was open to experiment. But love of his life? That's just silly. And why does Larry keep referring to John as "the artist". So pretentious. He even claims that John was really meant to be a painter, not a musician!!! He devotes quite a few pages to this. Enough to make you throw up. However, once you're finally past the chapter on Sutcliff,(whew!... and yuck!) the book gets better. I enjoyed the chapter on May Pang and I have heard that Lennon was in love with her. I've also heard that he wanted to leave Yoko for her,but Yoko had such an inexorable hold on John, that he couldn't do it. A VERY complicated man. It seems that May provided the caring closeness that he (and most men) crave from a women, but Yoko was that omnipotent Mommy Boss that he couldn't get away from and seemed to need also. I loved the chapter at the end, where fans share their feelings about John. That was a very nice idea and it should be in more books like this. It's facinating to read what other fans have to say about someone I've loved and admired since I was 10 years old. I agree with another reviewer that Lennon, by Ray Coleman is a much better bio.,at least from what I remember. I read it years ago but I do remember it being better written, but there's nothing in it about May Pang which is wrong. In order to write a complete bio, you have to include all important relationships. I suggest reading Lennon, by Ray Coleman, John, by Cynthia Lennon, and this one. There are many others also but don't waste your time on The Many Lives of John Lennon. That one is tabloid fiction. Oh wait! I forgot to tell you about the DVD that's included! A facinating Larry Kane interview with John and Paul. It's notable how John dominates Paul, very seldom giving him a chance to speak. Facinating if brief, look at their personal relationship at the time. John seems uptight as it's been said he was at that time (May 1968). Paul seems very uncomfortable, but about what, it's hard to say. The change in John? Nervousness about the launch of Apple? Discomfort talking to Larry Kane? Maybe all of the above. Nice addition to the book though.
Kane Revealed.......2006-11-24
I was interested in many of the details - conversations and public appearances that garnered little fanfare "in the day". I was looking for a less sycophantic and more honest account. According to the dewey-eyed Kane, John really wanted to be a great father, but... He really loved Julian, but... He really wanted to do right by Cynthia but... There is no but, according to Kane. John was just Wonderful John, with a license to hurt, ignore, brutalize and abandon his original family (and others) because he's, well, Wonderful John. It reminds me (with some irony) of John's own lyrics to "Bungalo Bill", where the children ask if it's wrong to kill, to which his mom (or Kane) answers "Not when he looks so dear". This book reads more like it was written by an adoring groupie than an experienced, balanced journalist.
I loved John's music, his humor, his genuis. I can take the truth though. I don't need to beatify him. He had some rather serious flaws, and they shoud be acknowledged honestly, or it shoud be stated in the foreward that "this book is by an ardent admirerer who wants to paint a picture with no rough edges". I can't help but think that John would verbally tear Kane a new one if he read this harmless, suck-up account.
Get the other half by reading Cynthia's book. Don't miss the forward by Julian.
wasn't worth checking out of the library.......2006-07-06
Just another Beatle acquaintance cashing in on Beatlemania. Who gives a hoot if Lennon was bi? Not me. If you want to explore that topic, I suggest the film The Hours and Times. I gave the book one star becuase I dig the picture of Lennon on the cover.

Exchange Bible.......2006-09-22
I work for a company that provides exchange solutions. This is the end all be all of exchange guides. It may be a little bit overwehlming for a person just cutting their teeth on exchange but if you must understand exchange, this is your book.
My spelling stinks.
WOW, Even with Service Pack 1.......2005-04-23
I read sample chapters of this book on searchexchange.com and had to get it. It is 100% dead on. Any admin who has to deal with exchange integration (especially 2003) will find this book an excellent guide. The best practices helped my organization. The caption for this book reads:

Book Description
A pivotal event in early modern history, the Congress of Westphalia gave birth to our contemporary international political system. While bringing peace to Germany after the Thirty Years' War, it created a new order in Europe and resolved longer lasting problems, including religious divisions and the relationship between emperor and estates. It was one of the longest and most complex, peace conferences in history. This book provides an essential reference for anyone wishing to sort out the complicated negotiations. The significance of the European order established in 1648 extends far beyond the paragraphs of the treaty. The Congress alone--the first of its kind--became a standard for future diplomacy and negotiation. Even today, historians are finding new aspects of this extraordinarily complex Congress and Peace. With over 300 detailed entries, covering a wide variety of topics from the relevant people, places, and influential battles to critical concepts and technical terms, the book will be useful both to scholars and to students interested in the Peace of Westphalia, the Holy Roman Empire, or the events of the 1640s.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely worthwhile - quite overpriced.......2005-09-12
'The Peace of Westphalia: A Historical Dictionary' looks quite attractive, specially considering it's the most frequently cited book on the Congress(es) of Westphalia there is. A simple search on both Amazon.com and Google will show you this is the greatest source for everything Münster and Osnabrück on the 1640's. Croxton and Tischer may sound to you as unknown, but they are nonetheless the greatest living authorities on one of the most important Congresses in History.
My review can only be understood in the light of my purpose in buying this book. I am an undergraduate International Relations student and I plan to simulate the Congress(es) in my university's MUN - Model United Nations. Bibliography on the foreign policy of each province is both obscure and vital. Simply writing the list of delegations - that is, the roles that will be assigned for students to simulate - is no easy task, and won't be properly met with your average book on the Thirty Year's War. In other words, I bought the book because it aims to give exactly what I need: precise, accurate, reliable, exremely specific information on the details and specifics of the Congress.
This small, 400-page green book, thus, appears as a fundamental source. And it certainly fulfills its role. The book has the merit of resisting the temptation of being just another book on the Thirty Year's War - it's a book on the Peace, with hundreds of entries on provinces, kingdoms, diplomats, a few battles, and even a few curiosities - such as entries "Brazil" (object of disupte between Portugal and Netherlands) and "Newspapers" (describing the role of the press on international politics in the 17th century).
That is the point that must be understood - it's a reference book. 400 pages and hundreds of entries amounts to entries being not exhaustive discussions, but dense descriptions. In short (pardon the pun): the articles are quite small - often being a mere paragraph.
To compensate for this, after each and every article there are the bibliographical references. Instead of being listed at the end of the book, references are - very adequately - just below their respective articles. Cheers for this idea.
Unfortunately, the references are not of much help. Practically none of them are in English, and many (if not almost all) are very hard to obtain if you don't have access to a big library in Europe. This is certainly not the fault of the authors, who present to us an English compendium on information that has never seen the light of day in English; but nonetheless, for the non-European reader, there's not much to be done on the smallness of articles. In this sense, the book's potential will only be 100% used if you're inside a large European library - which, sadly, is not my case, since I'm Brazilian.
Being Brazilian, I managed to detect a factual innacuracy on the book. On page 35, on the "Brazil" entry, we read "Portuguese settlers at the Brazilian town of Bahía". I am quite sure that Bahia is not a town, but a province - nowadays, a state. This small mistake casts doubts on the accuracy on all other articles, but nonetheless it's a small mistake and I believe it's forgivable.
Nothwithstanding all this, the book IS quite informative and well-written, and its dictionary format allows for a comprehensive list of topics that will allow my research to be accurate and satisfying - the book will be a fundamental tool in designing the simulation of the Congresses of Münster and Osnabrück. The book's two flaws are 1) its full potential can only be enjoyed inside a European library and 2) it's quite expensive! I bought 'The Thirty Year's War' by C.V. Wedgwood for about 13 dollars and on its chapter on the Peace of Westphalia I found a lot of information that is not in the Dictionary.
But if the Peace of Westphalia is arguably the most important Congress in History, 'A Historical Dictionary' is unarguably the best book in English there is on the subject. If you want to know about the Treaty, do buy - if you have the money, of course :p

Fascinating and funny wartime memoir.......2004-08-07
Joan Wyndham's colourful and enthralling wartime diary covers the period from August 1939 to May 1941. Not quite seventeen at the outbreak of war, she has been raised a good Catholic but is nevertheless eager to experience the sins of the flesh. She encounters a number of eccentric, bizarre and outrageous men before finally falling for glamorous, impossible Rupert. The story of her cheqeured sex life is interwoven with vivid and fascinatign descriptions of London bohemian life among artists, writers, actors and philosophers. Much of it is very funny, yet tragedy is never far away. For instance, there is a delightful description of dancing at the Cafe de Paris to Ken 'Snakehips' Johnson and his band, then a few chapters later comes the stark tragedy of the bombing of the Cafe, with Ken and all but one of his band killed. Joan's ups and downs with love, friends, family and food are vividly and charmingly described. The book ends with her joining the Wrens, you can read about her adventures as a Wren in the equally entrancing sequel to this book 'Love is Blue'.
Vivid, often appalling, sexual awakening.......2002-12-31
Wyndham's diary of herself as a 17 year old girl entering headfirst a world of decadent artists (with seemingly no qualms whatsoever) and making out with just about every man she meets is astonishingly, vividly written-- full of dialogue and sharp characterization, and hardly any girlish wondering or dreaming.
This is nearly impossible to put down, and often very erotic. But I found it unsettling, too-- there's a cold-bloodedness she and her whole world have towards sex which jars with the emotion she also seems to feel for some of the men so that I didn't get much emotional payoff from the book. It fascinated, but didn't move. For example, none of her relationships are exclusive ones; she knows all her boyfriends have other girlfriends ("mistresses," since they sleep together), and despite all the attention given to sex nobody ever seems very interested in intimacy-- or in love, despite the title.
Still it's a very quick, enjoyable read-- a bit like reading some of the short stories that used to be in Cosmopolitan.
I didn't really like Joan or any of her friends, but I didn't mind being in their company.
This is a book that DEMANDS republishing.......2001-01-30
These are the diaries of a young girl (only 17 when the war starts) and her journey into adulthood. She becomes (or plays at being) a painter, joins the Bohemian art culture, is seduced by a variety of men and keeps this frank, funny, appalling journal. Read it - you may view your grandmother in a whole new light!

Book Description
D. Allan Bromley, the first person to hold the cabinet-level rank of Science Advisor to the President, here writes an engrossing memoir of his years at the Bush White House, bringing the unique perspective of a scientist to the political realities of policy making with the President and his other Senior Assistants. Bromley`s account is both a broad overview of the role of science and technology in the Bush Administration and an insider`s account of the ambiance, personalities, and politics that mold policy decisions in Washington. It is fascinating and thought-provoking reading.
