Martinez here summarizes the literature on bateyes and the Dominican sugar industry, which is primarily in Spanish or unavailable to audiences in the US.

There are other books that deal directly with immigration from Haiti from a political, human rights, or folklore perspective. This book explains the mechanics of haitian immigration to bateyes and relates it to the body of theory about immigration and transnationalism. It's a narrow subject, but if you, like me, have a strong connection to the rural poor of the eastern half of a small island relatively close to Miami, or if you are interested in immigration as a social phenomena, you should find this to be fascinating reading. The key questions for him are about who immigrates to the DR and why.

If the subject of migration theory doesn't really excite you, but you're still interested in Haitian cane cutters in the DR, the bibliography will be immensely useful for you in assembling your own study. Kicks journalistic interpretations (c.f. Michelle Wucker) in the pants, and short of sitting in the library of El Museo Del Hombre Dominicano in Santo Domingo, it's probably the best place to start if you want to understand bateyes and a bit of the context of Haitian labor in the DR.

Everyone knows the success stories of the music industry - how Michael Jackson's Thriller blew the roof off and how Clive Davis helped orchestrate Carlos Santana's stunning comeback. But now you'll find out about people who were dead wrong. This book details some of the most expensive blunders ever made by artists and by record executives, managers and producers who've worked with stars such as Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, The Beatles, Madonna, Nickelback, Bob Dylan, Dido, The Rolling Stones, and dozens more. From contract and copyright screw-ups to sheer arrogance and lying, this book includes eye-opening revelations on: the pitfalls of employing a family member * the marketability of suicide * the industry's accepted levels of lies and thievery * and much, much more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Eye Opening Read on Pitfalls.......2007-03-09

Whenever I feel like adding some gas to the tank, I read this book. It does a great job of capturing the dark ugly mess we call the music industry. This is a great book for anyone thinking of joining the industry and provides real life examples of pitfalls that other artists have endured over time.5 stars!

          4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-20

The music industry is a very harsh world that punished and still punishes the weak and the ones that make mistakes. You must keep your head high and your spirit high if you want to have any chance here, a world in which evolution is speeding and the weak are eliminated in a blink of an eye. Moses Avalon's title has good background information coupled with witty explanations and additional breaking information about some of the more recent success stories. A definite buy for people involved in the business or for someone who wants to enter this world.

5 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Achievement!.......2006-03-30

Another brilliant traipse through the tangles of the music biz. And in this volume we get the added value of "lessons learned" from a wide spectrum of industry reps.

Moses has more know-how in his little finger than a roomful of music business teachers. Read and master his stuff, or die!

          -Peter Spellman

          5 out of 5 stars Admit It.......2006-02-26

A great man once told me "The only good mistake is one you learn something from, and you don't learn unless you admit the mistake in the first place." I'm glad to see a book like this that contains first class mistakes and ways to avoid them. No one explains the dirty ways of the music biz like Moses. So get it, read it, highlight it and use it to avoid the pitfalls and side tracks that are coming your way.

          5 out of 5 stars Moses doesn't just Supposes...he Know'ses!.......2006-01-25

The book is an easy read as it is written very clearly. Any person who aspires to be in the music industry must pick up this book. This is their bible. People say that in order to succeed you got to be in it to win it but once the point if you don't even know how the game is played? Get this book, learn the system and play by your rules!

            Book Description

This original study discovers the bourgeois in the modernist and the dissenting style of Bohemia in the new artistic movements of the 1910s. Brooker sees the bohemian as the example of the modern artist, at odds with but defined by the codes of bourgeois society. Bohemia in London reconstructs the usual history, situating the canonic names of modernism in the world of groups and coteries which shaped the allied experiments in art and life. Thus it renews once more the complexities and radicalism of the modernist challenge.

Though he didn't do the writing himself, Scott Mueller's involvement in Upgrading and Repairing Networks is evident in the thoroughness of the book's coverage and the quality with which documentation has been written and compiled. Like Mueller's highly respected books on personal computer hardware, this book treats its subject in great depth, acknowledging that information about older technologies is valuable to the significant numbers of people who still run those technologies. Pretty much every local area network (LAN) technology from the past 15 years--as well as the most popular internetworking technologies and the emerging wireless networking protocols--are documented here. Author Terry Ogletree explains how the technologies work in order to help you figure out where to turn when they're misbehaving. One difference between this book and the PC hardware book: this one is much less hardware-centric, focusing instead on software, protocols, and network services.

Ogletree relies heavily on text, and takes time to explain everything from the histories of various protocols to Microsoft's design goals for Active Directory in Windows 2000 networks. Reading his text is rewarding, particularly if you have an appropriately networked system nearby with which you can investigate the features he points out. Operating system coverage is broad--Unix, Linux, NetWare, and Windows are all covered in turn--though most generic sections (such as those having to do with protocols) use Windows NT or Windows 2000 in their examples. --David Wall

Topics covered: The state of the art in local and wide area networking technology (emphasis on LANs), and the older technologies that led us here. Physical network design, protocols, operating systems, and services all get attention.

5 out of 5 stars Network Upgrades et al........2007-09-02

The work has a good description of basic topology consisting of the bus,
star, ring, mesh and hybrids. Both shared and non-shared network topologies
are described in some considerable detail. The system life cycle is explained. This consists of project management steps. i.e.
              o upgrade definition and goals
              o planning
              o scheduling
              o downtime
              o testing
              o documentation and revision

Servers and workstation issues are covered. i.e.
              o backup
              o rotation schedules
              o offsite storage and maintenance

The centralization of the telecommunications closet and cable distribution
is set forth. Limiting factors of ethernet technologies are set forth.
These are network transmission media, interconnected devices, media
access etc. Firewalls and network gatekeepers are described in detail
together with diagrammatic representations. The work would be helpful
for network administrators and other network systems personnel.

2 out of 5 stars All generalities - No expertise........2006-10-04

This book covers a lot of general terms and concepts but doesn't provide much in the way of useful practical advice. There are a lot of generalities like "it's good to have backups" or "take your budget into consideration" (wow, really?) but nothing about comparing actual systems and their costs.

There is no actual case studies, no formulas or design guidelines. How many users should you have on a subnet? How many users per switch port? How should you measure current network traffic? Which test tools should you use to make the measurement? How much additional capacity do you need to support multicast? What conformance tests are useful for certifying your cable installation? Any real-world questions like these are unanswered by this book.

When I read through the bios of the three co-authors, I noticed that none of them listed an actual network design reference. They all seem to be technical writers that write books about PCs. Caveat emptor.

If you need to actually upgrade a network you would be far better off with one of the Cisco titles on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Good place to go first!.......2006-06-17

So while one female reviewer is sucking on something to do with her local postman let us who realise these pages and star rankings are to do with reviewing "THE BOOK" not the "POSTAL SERVICE" get on with it and do just that. You have a small to mid sized network, can't afford the specialists or courses to send them on and the technical support line is it's useful self again, not. So where do you go for help. Well you could try here as after all 90% of network problems are in the wires and on your side of the router. Evolving through four editions, each building on the last, many a clue if not a resolution can be found on these pages covering a wide range of operating sytems, hardware, software and of course potential faults. Well recommended for the Network First Aid Shelf. Either that or if you find the Postmans Service does not satisfy then call a plumber round instead.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Mueller.......2006-05-10

I'm a small business owner & self-taught computer & network user and make-do tech. If you're in a position such as I am, with a very small operation in a rural area, finding and affording computer service can be prohibitive, making it necessary to learn how to maintain and repair your own equipment, network and software. I have a small library of books on various operating systems, hardware and networking, and if one of Mueller's books covers whatever issue I'm dealing with at the time, I look there first as I'll usually find an answer. His books contain alot of information so are quite thick and can look rather intimidating. However, they're also well organized and indexed, making it easy to find what you're looking for, and his writing style makes technical topics easy to follow and understand, even for the untrained reader. If you work on computers, either as a professional or a must-do-it-yourselfer, like me, I highly recommend anything by Mueller. They are invaluable additions to any computer/networking library.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing for Scott.......2005-08-14

I was disappointed in this book with Scott's name on it. Normally, a Scott Mueller book is historic, current and technologically crammed with hardware and software. This was historically correct and reasonably current (no XP though Server 2003) in software but the lack of hardware and compatibilities that are the mainstay of his "Updating and Repairing PCs" is severely lacking. Compatibility is a (if not THE) major problem in networking systems. Coverage of compatibility and sites that provide drivers, etc., would be a major improvement.
Maybe I just suffer from expectations on the level of his "PC" books. Still a pleasant read for those needing background.

                    Book Description

This volume deals with the last two and a half years of the Prophet's life. In addition to the three major expeditions to Hunanyn, Ta'if, and Tabuk, it describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the illness from which he died and the subsequent crisis of leadership faced by the nascent Muslim community. The author depicts with admirable fairness all the various opinions and divisions that existed within the community. He also presents a vivid picture of the Prophet's physical appearance, his personal life, and his marriages. Among other topics discussed in this volume are all the deputations that came to Medina; a summary of all the expeditions and raiding parties; and his scribes, freedmen, horses, camels, goats, swords, coats of mail, and so on. It also covers the apostasy of Musaylimah, Aswad, and Tulhahah and the Prophet's attempts to deal with them.

The translation not only preserves the original lively flavor of al-Tabari but also, in its annotations, draws extensively on both parallel Arabic sources and the intensive research of recent years. Readers who seek a deeper understanding of the Prophet's personality and of the reasons for antagonisms engendered among various factions will find this volume most informative.

If you have never read Aryeh Kaplan before you are in for a treat. He opens up the mystical (G-ds intended meaning), deeper meaning of the Bible to those uninitiated in Hebrew, Torah, Talmud or Kabbalah. What the true meaning of Jerusalem has to Jews and the world and to the final resurrection predicted by Judaism is all packed into this little book. Read It and Grow.

                        Book Description

Henry Sidgwick is one of the great intellectual figures of 19th century Britain. He was first and foremost a great moral philosopher, whose masterwork Methods of Ethics is still widely studied today. But he was many other things besides, writing on religion, economics, politics, education and literature. He was deeply involved in the founding of first college for women at the University of Cambridge. He was a leading figure in parapsychology. He was also much concerned with the sexual politics of his close friend John Addington Symonds, a pioneer of gay studies. Through his famous student, G.E. Moore, a direct line can be traced from Sidgwick and his cirlce to the Bloomsbury group. Bart Schultz has written a magisterial overview of this great Victorian sage--the first comprehensive study, offering quite new critical perspectives on the life and the work. Sidgwick's ethical work is revealed as a necessarily guarded statement of his deepest philosphical convictions and doubts. All other areas of his writings are covered and presented in the context of the late Victorian culture of imperialism. ' This biography, or 'Goethean reconstruction' will be eagerly sought out by readers interested in philosophy, Victorian studies, political theory, the history of ideas, educational theory, the history of psychology and gender and gay studies. Bart Schultz is Fellow and Lecturer in the Division of the Humanities and Special Programs Coordinator in the Graham School of General Studies at the University of Chicago.

You don't need expensive instruments to appreciate the beauty of the night sky, as Bob Berman exuberantly demonstrates in Secrets of the Night Sky. Berman takes you on a tour of the night sky, pointing out its highlights and its history, along with a wealth of practical tips and tricks, such as how to categorize satellites that appear overhead. Secrets of the Night Sky is not only a how-to manual for enjoying the celestial sphere but is also a painless introduction to the science of cosmology. With a flair for analogies, Berman imparts a visceral understanding of the scale of stellar objects. And in case your explorations do lead you to buy a telescope, the book's appendices contain a variety of no-nonsense advice that may save you from getting fleeced.

5 out of 5 stars A great basic astronomy read for the casual observer........2006-01-30

I first read this book when in the Navy stationed in Japan, I would read it on the train to and from Tokyo and Yokosuka. It was light, enjoyable reading about what you can see in the night sky. Now I am reading again to refresh my memory of constellations, stars, Jupiters moons and how to see satellites. My daughter loves stars and I want to refresh my basic knowlege so I can stimulate her curiosity as we view the sights together. I cannot think of a better text to do so. It is a quick read and filled with intersting facts about spacial relationships, space travel and just the magnitude of it all. If there is a down spot it would be the frequent analogies of size and distance which really become meaningless after a point. Still the text will give the lay reader a vocubulary and understanding of the night sky in an easy to read, fun text, what more can you ask for?

This book is one of the most informative and entertaining I have ever read. Buy it.

                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2003-09-18

I have been in amateur astronomy for 15 years, and this is one of my favorite books, for beginner or astronomy hobbyist. This is, mercifully, NOT a textbook. You can learn your way around the sky with Raymo's "365 Starry Nights" (also an excellent book), but Berman supplies the humor. The beauty of the night sky is, unfortunatly, a "secret," as few people know anything about it! Let Bob Berman describe the scene up there, get yourself a star chart, and get outdoors!

2 out of 5 stars General knowledge only.......2003-06-14

This book is probably intended for the vast masses that want and look for general information about the universe. The writer indeed contribute a little bit of amazing information about the sizes of stars but many pages are wasted on tidbits which contribute nothing for the science of astronomy. The book is written in light English with not so many words in every page. The diagrams and pictures are of a very low quality and it is very difficult to understand the names of the stars in the diagrams. The pictures are simply disappointing and the paper quality is low as well. The book is as far as possible from a scientific book. Don't come closer to this book if you are after the science of astronomy.

There are three books I read again every year: Baseball Anecdotes by Daniel Okrent and Steve Wulf; Be True to Your School by Bob Greene; and the Starry Room by Fred Schaaf. Only one of them moves me to tears on the very first page. If you have ever stood at the edge of the woods at night, gazed up at the stars, and trembled with reverence and awe, perhaps even fear - Fred Schaaf's prose will not only return you to that sacred moment but sweep you up and into the midst of that very sky. The intimate universe awaits.

Issac Asimov's affection for astronomy sparkles throughout this thoroughly researched and very entertaining book. An impression of the instrument's dramatic impact on civilisation, is left with the reader. My copy was lost five years ago and I still pine for it. No doubt, had Asimov written 'A Brief History of Time' then quantum physicists would be more widely understood

Written on the eve of construction of the Hubble Space Telescope, Eyes on the Universe traces the development of optical telescopes from the human eye and Galileo's first night out to design considerations for HST. Find out why Galileo went blind, how Newton built the first reflector and why Lord Rosse got clouded out. Learn how giant telescopes and the replacement of the eyepiece with cameras allowed modern astronomers to storm the heavens and change our concepts about the size, age and origins of the cosmos. An excellent history and easy read for scientist and non-scientist alike, Asimov proves why he made tons more money writing science fact than science fiction

Who hasn't wondered what it's like to be an astronaut? This book explains how candidates train to become astronauts or "star sailors." It looks at how they prepare for a mission, what they do in space, and what they experience along the way. Kids will love discovering how astronauts eat, sleep, and spend their day in weightless conditions. Engaging photographs and clearly written text will help hopeful young astronauts decide if they, too, have the "right stuff."

5 out of 5 stars The holy city seen through holy eyes .......2005-05-20

Aryeh Kaplan sees Jerusalem as both historical center of the Jewish people and cosmic center for redemption of the world.
This is a concise and deep reflection on the Holy City.
