    Book Description

This textbook bridges the gap between the sometimes overly simple VCR repair guides aimed at the average do-it-yourself and the highly technical manuals designed for use by experienced radio and TV bench technicians. Complete coverage includes both the "how's" and "why's" of maintaining VHS VCRs, as well as discussion of the practical aspects of interfacing with VCR repair customers. Everything from reading schematics, to use of test equipment, to tips for protecting the VCR and the technician during servicing are included. The reader-friendly style, supported by numerous photos and illustrations and a comprehensive glossary of acronyms and abbreviations, makes this book ideal for use by today's electronics students.

5 out of 5 stars Cheerful, bi-partisan fun from Davy Crockett to Al Gore.......2001-02-10

"Cotton" Ivy -- a professional humorist who's also served in both the legislative and executive branches of Tennessee government -- and Roy Herron, a current state senator, have compiled a good-natured compendium of tales about famous Tennessee politicians from Davy Crockett to Al Gore. There are plenty of wonderful stories here. Although the co-authors are both Democrats (Herron was the state chair for Gore's presidential campaign), there are good stories about figures from both parties here. The photos are great, too, with some interesting little historical tidbits in the captions. If you can't get Cotton Ivy to come and speak in person, this is the next best thing.

        Book Description

Here is John Lahr--"the most intelligent and insightful writer on theatre today" (The New York Times)--at his trenchant best, reinventing the celebrity profile. Honky-Tonk Parade illuminates some of the compelling, elusive, and important artists of our time, who talk to Lahr with rare candor. His portraits weave together biography, anecdote, and shrewd interpretation. On the roster of greats are Dame Edna, Steve Buscemi, August Wilson, Cole Porter, Dame Judi Dench, Ang Lee, Billy Connolly, Kenneth Tynan, Yip Harburg, Mira Nair, Baz Luhrmann, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Hicks, Richard Rodgers, and Tony Kushner.

Honky-Tonk Parade, like the icons whose lives and work it so meticulously chronicles, corrupts an audience with pleasure.

        5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Find.......2007-08-27

If you haven't read anything by John Lahr, this is a great place to start. You might become addicted. I especially enjoyed Lahr's profiles of Cole Porter, Dame Edna, and Kenneth Tynan, but I was glad I read every one of them. Highly recommended if you enjoy intelligence, insight, and style in your reading.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-02-22

John Lahr is a profoundly talented writer and these profiles may be his best work yet.

In about ten thousand words you get a thoughtful and lively portrait of a remarkable person - but that's obvious. What makes Lahr unique is that he effortlessly achieves something more: the people Lahr portrays are performers, that is to say these folks are masters at hiding who they actually are. Lahr is unrivalled at finding these entertainers and letting them and their work speak. Each profile is full and living, a master-class in the art of the profile.

Especially remarkable are his portraits of Ang Lee, August Wilson, Bill Hicks, Billy Connolly, Dame Edna, Laurence Fishburne, Judi Dench, Tony Kushner, and Mira Nair - there are many more.

3 out of 5 stars John Lahr: Honky Tonk Parade.......2006-03-03

These are Lahr's insights into show people living and dead, American and otherwise, from Richard Rodgers to Tony Kushner. Lahr's best book remains his full-length biography of Orton but here he's perceptive in short bites about performance and performers. He's assumed the mantle of Kenneth Tynan (profiled here) but not his limitless addiction to the razzle-dazzle: his profile of Judi Dench for one is less flattering than Tynan would have made it. It's Tynan minus the sugar rush. If you're already the kind of person likely to buy the book you won't learn a lot from it - but you'll have a good time anyway.

i have never read anything by henry rollins before i purchased this book. and i fell in love w/ his writing. i have now bought almost every book by him and in the process of reading them. his books touch me in a way, and help too. its hard for me to find a book, let alone an author that i like as much as henry rollins and his books

5 out of 5 stars Very few touched me as this..........2005-11-06

this is the most honest, heartbreaking work I've read. It puts your personal misery into perspective, reminding you what it means to live life. Even after you lose those that make you whole.

          5 out of 5 stars Honest Writing.......2003-09-18

There is so much farcity in the world today that it's so good to come across a writer like Henry who's willing to show everyone what he thinks, how he feels, what his life is like and how he perceives the world around him.

This book is very brutal and honest, which I think always makes for good writing. He has a very clear perception of the people around him and how they think, which lets him view the world from all sides including his own. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to open their eyes to someone else's reality.

5 out of 5 stars The world's most powerful book.......2002-03-03

7 years ago, a friend of mine read me a poem from "Now Watch Him Die" (They were seperate books back then). It's the one on page 164 of this volume, the one that starts with "I love you and you'll never know." Since then, I have not gone anywhere without a copy of these books close at hand. They are an all-encompassing chronicle of one man's solipsism, isolation, desperation and depression. This may not sound fascinating, but that man happens to be Henry Rollins, who has a talent for intensity and a command of words rivaled by no one of this era. Not since Bukowski has someone used so little to say so much. If you are ready for a descent into a maelstrom of anger, violence and pure, blinding pain, then this is the book for you. If you're looking for something sappy, sweet and redemptive, then try Oprah's Book Club instead.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent albeit depressing work.......2001-08-18

I bought this book on a whim one day from a local bookstore and wasn't able to put it down. It's a brutally honest rendition of a life filled with tragedy, depression, doubt and one unsuccesful relationship after another. It's one of the more depressing books I've read, but I pick it up even when I'm feeling down. The intense emotion is almost palpable, you'll feel every bit of rage, heart-ache and frustration, loneliness and confusion. See a Grown Man Cry is worth every penny you pay, every minute you read and every pang of grief you feel for the suffering Mr. Rollins. If you ever by a book by Henry Rollins it should be this one.

                Book Description

This comprehensive guide bridges the gap between modern statistical methodology and real-world clinical trial applications. Step-by-step instructions illustrated with examples from actual trials and case studies serve to define a statistical method and its relevance in a clinical trials setting and to illustrate how to implement the method rapidly and efficiently using the power of SAS software. Topics reflect the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines for the pharmaceutical industry and address important statistical problems encountered in clinical trials, including analysis of stratified data, incomplete data, multiple inferences, issues arising in safety and efficacy monitoring, and reference intervals for extreme safety and diagnostic measurements. Clinical statisticians, research scientists, and graduate students in biostatistics will greatly benefit from the decades of clinical research experience compiled in this book. Numerous ready-to-use SAS macros and example code are included.

5 out of 5 stars ideal book for those analyzing clinical trials .......2007-08-14

I have previously reviewed a more recent book in the SAS series "Pharmaceutical Statistics using SAS: A Practical Guide" that Dmitrienko and Chuang-Stein also edited. Both books are very similar because they provide a variety of chapters by top experts in the field. Each chapter is well written and understandable to nonstatisticians who do clinical research as well as for statisticians who can use it as a reference and guide to the appropriate techniques to handle various common situations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who analyzes clinical trials data.

3 out of 5 stars Overly complicated language.......2006-11-30

Good history of methods with lots of citations. Not so good for practical application. Programming language is not fully explained and results are difficult to understand and reproduce. Limited output shown. I want Ron Cody to write an "applied statistics for clinical trials" workbook.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and thorough.......2006-08-24

This is an excellent easy to follow book, from which both statisticians and interested medical professionals can greatly benefit, I believe, because I am working with both. It has helped me a lot in my graduate project on data analysis of laboratory animal trials.

                    Book Description

In 1875, Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington, and Leland Stanford of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company began taking steps to construct a southern transcontinental railroad line east from California. The implementation problems encountered over the next six years, the company's internal disagreements along with those it had with its rivals, and the anticipated regional economic benefits the tracks would bring comprise the concluding chapters of Slavery, Scandal, and Steel Rails.

The book's beginning details how the southwestern territory those rails crossed was purchased from Mexico in 1854.

James Gadsden of Charleston, South Carolina started championing a southern cross-country railroad in 1846 to improve his hometown's economy and to export slavery west of Texas. At the conclusion of the Mexican American War two years later, the United States obtained 600,000 square miles of new territory, but not enough to accommodate the southern route. That is why, at the urging of Jefferson Davis, Gadsden was appointed Minister to Mexico.

Gadsden's negotiations to acquire more Mexican land were complicated by several factors, including dubious instructions from a secret messenger. He was able, however, to finalize a treaty, which was later substantially altered by the United States Senate, that resulted in the Gadsden Purchase.

                                Book Description

The unmistakable new "aura of adventure" created by the opening of the first Transcontinental Railroad in May, 1869, soon fostered an almost insatiable public appetite for information about Pacific railroad travel in much the same way that man's first footsteps on the moon would do for the interest in space travel a century later in 1969. And what America's Nineteenth century "armchair adventurers" most often sought out and devoured with the greatest of passion were the colorful "first person" accounts of transcontinental railroad travel, authored by so many of the era's most popular writers, which soon began to appear in the pages of newspapers, monthly literary magazines, and travel books of the day.

Included within the pages of "Riding the Transcontinental Rails: Overland Travel on the Pacific Railroad 1865-1881" are of some of the best of these contemporary accounts of overland rail travel in the West. These gems of travel literature have been culled from the works of such acclaimed writers as the noted adventurer and New York Tribune correspondent Albert D. Richardson, the widely traveled Springfield (MA) Republican owner and Editor Samuel Bowles, Scottish novelist, poet, and essayist Robert Louis Stevenson, former New York Evening Post Managing Editor and world traveler Charles Nordhoff, onetime Chicago Evening Journal military correspondent Benjamin F. Taylor, American novelist Helen Hunt Jackson, and her close friend and frequent traveling companion Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, herself a popular author of children's novels. These accounts first appeared between 1865 and 1881 in these authors' own books as well as in the pages of such widely read periodicals as Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Scribner's Magazine, The Overland Monthly, the New York Times, and the New York Tribune.

Also included are two fascinating first person accounts by nonprofessional writers. James H. Kinkead, a former Under Sheriff of Washoe County, Nevada, tells the story of how he solved and captured the perpetrators of the first train robbery in the west, that of the CPRR's Overland Express which took place near Verdi, Nevada, in November, 1870. Perhaps most remarkable of all, however, is a never before published 1872 letter from a 34-year old Boston businessman named Walter Scott Fitz relating a colorful day-by-day account of his harrowing 36-day winter transcontinental rail passage from Boston to San Francisco — which he describes as "the most eventful journey in the history of railroading" — during which he and his fellow passengers were often snowbound throughout Wyoming over a period of more than three weeks.

                                    Book Description

What could have happened in Italy 2000 years ago to entomb an entire port, including 16 Roman ships, thousands of artifacts, and both human and animal remains? This is the question that Michael Sedge, former Mediterranean Editor of Scientific American Discovering Archaeology, seeks to answer in The Lost Ships of Pisa.

The dramatic discovery of what Italian authorities are calling "the Pompeii of maritime archaeology" began in December 1998, when the national railroad began digging the foundation for a new station, 500 feet from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The work abruptly stopped, however, when, to the astonishment of all, the haunting remains of a wooden, Roman ship came to light, after being buried for centuries.

Today, a graveyard of sea vessels, dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 5th century A.D., have emerged from an ancient port that had been forgotten with time. Hundreds-of-thousands of artifacts -- enough to create an entire museum -- have also been recovered. Hordes of pottery, clothing, coins, and jewelry have come to light in what one archaeologist called a "river of antiquities."

5 out of 5 stars Palmer's Field Book of Natural History.......2004-09-29

I have had this book since my college days---mid fifties---and refer to it regularly. Last night our daughter told her 3 year old son to call me about a ginko berry he had found and I should look it up in Palmer's. So, it is now on it's third generation. Pretty good reputation. It is very comprehensive.
However I have the '49 edition. I hope the one I am ordering is as good.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-06-10

I have used the 1949 edition since high school. I especially treasure this book for its opinions which are revealed in the last paragraph of each entry. The book has a decidedly no-nonsense approach to the use of natural resources, while still very much concerned with conservation and human ecology. It's editorial emphasis is ahead of its time.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Fieldbook.......2001-10-16

This book was given to me by my uncle more than 20 years ago and I still refer to it constantly. Although the delineation of kingdoms has been revised since the last printing of the book, it is still an excellent resource for the naturalist. I use it in conjunction with more current field guides to learn more about my interest. This book goes beyond the standard field guides by providing not only a physical description for each entry, but also adds a description of the history and uses of the entries where possible. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in our natural world.

This is a constantly used resource. I used a copy of the 1949 edition as a text for an undergraduate ecology course and haven't parted with it since. No doubt this book would be dust by now if the 1975 edition hadn't come along. If I had but one field guide, this would be it. The range and presentation of the material is useful to the professional and accessible to the novice. I'm amazed it's out of print. Ecologists everywhere should be outraged.

I got this book for a high school text book back in 1979. After I came home, my mother borrowed it, & won't give it back. She claims she has never looked anything up that wasn't in it.

It's such a great reference, that I had to get another one for myself.

                                    Highly recomended!

                                                        Book Description

Commons-lands, waters, and resources that are not legally owned and controlled by a single private entity, such as ocean and coastal areas, the atmosphere, public lands, freshwater aquifers, and migratory species-are an increasingly contentious issue in resource management and international affairs.

Protecting the Commons provides an important analytical framework for understanding commons issues and for designing policies to deal with them. The product of a symposium convened by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) to mark the 30th anniversary of Garrett Hardin's seminal essay "The Tragedy of the Commons," the book brings together leading scholars and researchers on commons issues to offer both conceptual background and analysis of the evolving scientific understanding on commons resources. The book:

                                                        .

Contributors include Alpina Begossi, William Blomquist, Joanna Burger, Tim Clark, Clark Gibson, Michael Gelobter, Michael Gochfeld, Bonnie McCay, Pamela Matson, Richard Norgaard, Elinor Ostrom, David Policansky, Jeffrey Richey, Jose Sarukhan, and Edella Schlager.

Protecting the Commons represents a landmark study of commons issues that offers analysis and background from economic, legal, social, political, geological, and biological perspectives. It will be essential reading for anyone concerned with commons and commons resources, including students and scholars of environmental policy and economics, public health, international affairs, and related fields.
