Have Another Cookie Book.......2007-02-21
Fun book. I've bought at least a dozen. We like to bake cookies and then give the cookies and the book to someone needing a pick-me-up.
Snoopy Wisdom.......2004-02-11
I received this book as a present when I was going through a rough time in my life and it instantly cheered me up and put me in a great mood. This book is not only funny and amusing, but it is also inspiring and full of wisdom that can relate to anybody no matter how old you are. I highly recommend this little book because it will certainly make you smile and laugh.
Great Inspiring Book.......2003-07-12
This is a great book for older teenagers who may want inspiration or advice but feel they can't get it from their parents. Very funny but teaches a lesson. Great for a "Congraluations" or "Happy Birthday" gift. Remember nobody is to young to learn a lesson from the Peanuts! ;-)
Book Description
Author Dominic Priore, dubbed by MOJO ‘the world’s foremost Smile-ologist’, has written the definitive book on the entire experience – from the original recording to the revival tour and beyond. He has been in the studio with Wilson, as well as on the road for the celebrated European Smile concerts, and the result is the full version of one of pop’s mythic stories. Features forewords by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. Previously published by Sanctuary.
Customer Reviews:
Great book - ignore wrongheaded reviews!.......2006-08-04
Obviously many people expected a book in the vein of The Making of Pet Sounds, which was very good, but this is a different kind of book - much like Smile is a different kind of album. Pet Sounds has been for over 30 years my favorite album and will remain so, but Smile (in its original form) is a close contender. Count me among the many who have been patiently awaiting the "Smile Boxed Set" but were overjoyed that Brian finally finished it with the help of Van Dyke Parks. I saw the live show at Disney Concert Hall and it was incredible!
As to Domenic Priore's book, I believe it was essential to shed some background on the music and cultural scene of the times to contextualize the making of SMiLE. And it IS a fascinating story, well-told. It's too bad that Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston have chosen not to be interviewed about the project. That said, Priore has talked to lots of people involved in the original, as well as the principals, Brian and Van Dyke, and I HIGHLY recommend this book to any fan of Brian, the Beach Boys, and particularly SMiLE.
Not definitive by any stretch.......2006-03-11
Domenic Priore had previously published a curious book called "Look Listen Vibrate Smile" which was in effect a scrapbook of press clippings from the sixties about the "Smile" album. For a while that messy, offbeat primary source collection stood as the only book completely devoted to the subject of the famous lost Beach Boys album, and as such it was woefully insufficient. It has long been hoped that 1.) Brian Wilson would finish his odd masterpiece album and that 2.) somebody would sit down and write a proper, readable, blow-by-blow account of the original album's making - its writing, recording, detailed contents, business wrangling, emotional crack-ups, etc. Hope number 1 was fulfilled in 2004. Hope number 2 has not been fulfilled (though at least Keith Badman's book "The Beach Boys - the definitive diary" gives us a solid chronological overview.) This Priore book is short, spotty and sycophantic. It does not deal with the making of the original album in enough significant detail, though it does address the songwriting aspect a little bit with a few choice quotes from Van Dyke Parks (that is, when you can decipher whatever the heck Van Dyke is trying to say. He really is a convoluted speaker.) The book is filled with the author's own quirky opinions and is not terribly well organized or written, nor does it support many of its assertions with confirmation from more than one source when possible. Most of Brian Wilson's own significant emotional problems and eccentricities are glossed over. Famous "Smile" anecdotes are ignored and not investigated. The photographs included are scant; one might hope for more, especially studio shots which are known to exist. Also absent are many memories and input from musicians who worked on the original album. Complicated matters such as the album's original sequencing vs. its 2004 sequencing are half-heartedly dealt with, and are not handled in a way that could be understood by the average reader. That said, anything to do with 'Smile' is of interest, and this is the first book to address the making of the 2004 version. It also includes a fine appendix of art work (in black and white) that was originally intended for the album's packaging. So, this isn't the one we've waited for, but it will have to do until that one comes. Priore seems to be a good, devoted fan but not the guy to write a proper, journalistic book.
Most Excellent.......2006-02-15
I consider myself a very hard core BW/BB fan having read every book that's been published on Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys. (starting with Tobler's book in 1979 to, most recently, Domenic's new book)
The greatest appeal of this book, to me, is the wealth of new information that is presented. Instead of a boring regurgitation of rehashed material, we have new insight to a very important part of some of our musical lives. Van Dyke's contribution and endorsement is enough for me. But, add to that Danny Hutton's and other participants/observers comments from that specific era, and I have a vivid picture that Domenic has helped to paint.
I was already a fan of Domenic via the "Dumb Angel Gazzette" and his contributions to projects like Ed Wincentsen's book on Dennis, but this book gives me all the tedious, wonderful details I crave not only from the original era but also Darian's incredible work and insight on the new project.
5 Stars & thank you Domenic for doing another project that I can enjoy again and again.
Enjoyable read.......2005-11-21
It started off a little slow and gets a little technical at times but about halfway through it got really good and talked a lot about some of the behind the scenes stuff. If you're already a fan you'll have heard a lot of it but great for any Brian fan. Of course a fascinating topic and would recommend the book. 3 stars for the first half and 5 for the second half equals 4.
I love these guys!.......2005-10-31
What a thrill to finally get a vision of what Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks had in mind when they began their artistic adventure, all those years ago.I think Domenic has "hit the nail on the head" with his new book. He describes from his own point of view the journey from '66 to '04 with considerable input from Brian and his dear friend Van Dyke Parks. I am a huge fan of Dom's post punk posture about all things Southern California and as regards Smile he's "right on" once again.I could go on about the contents of the book but that would spoil the story and your own read. So I won't. Suffice it to say, Priore once again has brought sixties So Cal (i know they hate that in L.A.) perspective into our spoiled "ought" lives. I appreciate the jolt. Thanks!

Invaluable.......2005-04-12
The RAPID EYE books are necessary reading for anyone interested in contemporary subcultures, trangressive artists, radical thought and occult/popular culture crossovers. Boasting a roster of luminaries like Burroughs, Acker, P-Orridge, Huxley, and editor Simon Dwyer himself, I cannot recommend these books highly enough. RAPID EYE compilations continue to be an invaluable resource and inspiration.

Book Description
It seems unfair that Black gets all the attacking chances in the normal lines of the King's Indian. Readers can now take a tip from the World's leading expert of sharp systems and shock their opponent with the Four Pawn Attack! Black has countless ways to go wrong, while White is risking little if well-prepared. Vaisser's hitherto unpublished analysis will give readers the edge they need to send Black's King to the guillotine. The Four Pawn Attack can also be used against the Modern and Old Benoni. AN, 160 pages (American Batsford, 1997).

a large notch above most opening books.......2002-07-22
This is a labor of love; and it is an incredible well-presented openings work. There are diagrams at all the key, logical spots; preferred variations are marked with underline (this is very helpful); it is the best of both worlds with in depth variations throughout the opening, along with a complete game format. Another reviewer wrote a fine summary of the chapters but gave three stars because of a bias toward white. I think this is very unfair. It is true that white wins the games, but the author is constantly showing variations that were worse for white. His point is to guide you along the best paths to white, and those naturally will be those lines where white wins. Finally, I love the opening itself. I am one of those players who thinks people who play the king's indian and benoni deserve to be "punished." Giving them one of those long, slow positional games is just what they want. The four pawns is "in your face" and makes the game wild and agressive, right in the opening. White often sacs a pawn to enhance his initiative. In short, this is no-holds-barred ultra-exciting modern dynamic chess. This work by Vaisser is truly wonderful.
Good Average Book..........2002-01-02
This seems like a prety good book, granted with some gaps... Still if you thought about using four pawns attack this is a good place to start... Granted the book has some gaps cuz you can't fit everything vs. just the KID even if the entire book was about beating just that... So your gonna have to learn and do certain things on your own... What is important is the author uses what he writes about... Not only that, but he scores rather well with it... Unlike some authors that write about openings they never used in their lives... Much less scored anything worth a mention with them...
Chapter 1 deals with the main line with 9...Re8 and gives two examples how to reach position... Taking one from KID and one from Modern Benoni... He gives 5 examples mostly from his games where he wins... I think 4 out of 5 are from his own games and 3 of them he wins... The games are annotated rather well and should provide help... Chapter 2 deals with main line with 9...Bg4 and has 4 games... Again mostly his games 3/4 and he improves upon the 1 loss in chapter... Chapter 3 consists of main line with 9...b5 and rare moves... Only two games in this chapter and white wins both... None of Vaisser's own games this time however... So chapters 1-3 deal with systems that are common in both KID and Modern Benoni...
Next part of the book part 2 deals with systems specific to KID... Chapter 4 black plays 6...Na6 and has two game examples... One from Vaisser and another from one of the Polgar sisters... This time white wins and draws but his game was the draw... He explains a few errors that he made in the game that cost him the victory... Chapter 5 deals with the Pseudo-Benko gambit 7...b5 with one example... White wins this one which is no real surprise... Chapter 6 deals with other systems for black and has 2 games... Yes white wins both of these games if you could not guess ;)...
Part 3 deals with systems specific with the Modern Benoni... Chapter 7 deals with the Taimanov system Bb5+ and has 2 game examples... White wins both games but neither game is one the author played... Chapter 8 deals with the Mikens attack 8 e5 with 1 example... Not one of the authors but this time black actually wins... Yet he gives the move that would of won the game for White... The final page has the index of variations... I would of liked to see some coverage directly of d4 c5 Benoni to be honest... The title of book says beating the King's Indian and Benoni... It does not say only Modern Benoni so I think that is a bit misleading perhaps... The book is a bit on the pricey side for only 144 pages...
I would of probably given this book 4 stars if it was not so White biased... Granted it says beating the systems but maybe it was a bit too white... Also even some limited coverage vs d4 c5 would of helped its rating... As in perhaps least a chapter would of been nice... Still if your intersted in playing the four pawns pick this book up... Im not sure how much it really will help you as black... I think this is a good average book...
Excellent Book.......2000-05-10
The 4 pawns attack is an excellent and exciting line to play against the King's Indian Defense, and this book has every nut and bolt you need to win with it. Unlike most books, which leave out the obscure lines, this book covers it all (By the way, the obscure lines are in the notes to Game 16). 19 heavily annotated games will give you everything concept you need to win. For example, the 4 pawns attack is not for those who depend on material count, and must be willing to sacrificek, but often you never know when to do that. This book will tell you.
Exceptional book.......2000-04-01
The writers of opening books tend not to divulge their secrets for obvious reasons. Vaisser, in this book of his, has revealed a great deal of home analysis. This feature alone makes this book exceptional. I have used this analysis and have reaped rich rewards.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent opening book!.......2003-06-15
If you play the King's Indian or Benoni as Black, or if you want to consider playing the Four Pawns Attack as White, then you need to get this book. It is packed with detailed information, including many original ideas devised by the author. The opening itself is very sharp, with many tactical lines and possibilities for sacrifices. I have no doubt that if you study the book closely you will truly be an expert in this opening. In addition to the Four Pawns itself, Vaisser considers a number of other closely related lines such as the Mikenas Attack and the Taimanov (Flick-Knife) system in the Benoni.
The material is very detailed and the author does not spend much time describing general strategy or tactics. Because of this, I would recommend the book only for intermediate to advanced players.
Exquisite and beautifully done openings work.......2002-03-13
This one is a keeper. Vaisser has published a labor of love. This book had to be made--it has the feeling of having streamed forth from his chess soul. You know that he lives and dies with this opening. And the four pawns attack is such a beautiful and logical test of the KID and Benoni. Get this one. Truly special
Win games! after you study........2001-12-10
I have used this book a great deal. The information is packed on to the page, and it is accurate. Grandmaster Vaiser covers all important lines and offers many original ideas. His suggestions have often become the main line theory. The only ommission that prevents me from giving this book five stars? It does not have the overview of strategy and planning we have come to expect from the very best writers.

Don't bother.......2005-08-28
Don't bother getting a DUMMIES book for Final Cut Pro. There are better books that achieve the same thing and can take you from ground zero to a point of understanding and knowledge that cost nearly the same. For instance, "Final Cut Pro 4 for MAC OSX is a great book". Even if you've never editing anything before don't waste money on DUMMIES. It's a good series for many things of course but not in this area.
Perfect For Newbies.......2003-10-25
This is a great reference for anyone who has never edited video before. I don't have any experience with Final Cut Pro or any other editing program, but this book covers everything I need to know to create my own videos. It begins with basic editing tips and moves on to things like high-tech transition effects. The CD that comes with it also has several different plug-ins you can use to spice up your movies.

Amazing Compendium of Timelines.......2000-12-28
This book has timelines spanning all possible subjects, from science, literature and the arts, military history, sports, and dozens of others. Each timeline is chock full of dates and detailed explanations of what took place on that date in history. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history.
Book Description
Volume 4 covers the period from World War II to the present and examines the end of European colonial empires, the emergence of political structures of the independent states, economic and social change, religious change in contemporary Southeast Asia, Southeast Asia's role and identity in decolonization, and the ongoing weakening of links with the West.

A very scholarly book.......2001-04-08
The thematic approach of the book deviates from the usual country-to-country approach espoused my most authors on the subject. It gives the reader a better understanding of the milestones and institutions of Souutheast Asia. It is more of a "why" and "how" approach, instead of the "who", "what", and "when" approach. In short, very scholarly!

Packet switching works well for moving data -- why not use it for moving humans? In a nutshell, the French Aramis transit project proposed packet switching as a solution to human transport problems (though, so far as I can tell, neither the author nor any reviews I have yet read have made this connection).
With all the brouhaha about moving bytes around on the information superhighways, moving people around real cities has become less glamorous -- after all, the current mythology is that telecommuting will render the automobile obsolete, right? With the prevailing American tendency to think in terms of technological manifest destiny, stories about superior technologies failing miserably are usually glossed over in an obsession with teleology (history is an inevitable march toward greater perfection).
In contrast, this book describes an extraordinarily well-designed and highly superior semi-personal robotic transit system developed by the French government -- and then squashed by the French government. It is written in a style that only a Gallic scientist could conceive (for example, in a passage about project complexity, Latour writes: ...The monkey is readily identified as a creature of desire...). Because of such stylistic excrescences, I personally I found this book somewhat difficult to read at times, but I recommend it very highly to anyone interested in the history of technology, cross-cultural studies, telecommunications -- or the burgeoning application of packet switching principles to mass transit.
Book Description
Bruno Latour has written a unique and wonderful tale of a technological dream gone wrong. As the young engineer and professor follow Aramis' trail--conducting interviews, analyzing documents, assessing the evidence--perspectives keep shifting: the truth is revealed as multilayered, unascertainable, comprising an array of possibilities worthy of Rashomon. The reader is eventually led to see the project from the point of view of Aramis, and along the way gains insight into the relationship between human beings and their technological creations. This charming and profound book, part novel and part sociological study, is Latour at his thought-provoking best.

Cool!.......2006-08-17
Well, like it or not - you have to read it. Clear books are boring propaganda. Insightful thoughts are never quite clear. For the clear read your bank statement.
Save yourself, you're the only one who can.......2002-10-16
I hated this book for all the same reasons that the previous reviewer loved it. Latour's voice changes add some depth to the story, but are done in a manner so convoluted that much of the substance is lost. Using Aramis itself as the voice of martyred technology just becomes increasingly absurd throughout the book. There are much better books than this out there about man's relationship with technology, do yourself a favor and find one of them.

A Hi-tech novel of Social Adoption of Technology.......1997-01-01
This is a very disturbing but at the same time very thought-provoking
book on the adoption of a hypermodern new means of public
transportation.
Aramis was a small car version of the driverless subway which is
now commonly known because of applications in Lille (France)
and Orlando (USA)
Latour disguises as a student of engineering sciences and writes
a kind of whodunnit on the final question: 'who killed Aramis"?
Because he lends his voice to the engineer, to his professor of Sociology,
to the Aramis system itself and to himself as an author, the book
shows different views on the same reality.
Highly documented with texts that would be dynamite if they
had been published during the development of the Aramis train
system itself.
Latour shows why Conservative governments never would adopt really revolutionary
developments in public transportation.
At times a difficult book, but hilarious too, and a reader for
every technology-minded post-structuralist and post-marxist
thinker...
