A Must for Anyone Interested in Memphis Working Class History.......2005-09-07

Michael Honey does a fantastic job in explaining the CIO's contribution to the Struggle for Civil Rights. The Left-Led CIO Unions, most of all FTA Local 19, prepared a cadre of African-American working class leaders in Memphis, who were, in fact, the precursors to those of the 1960s. A must for anyone interested in the study of the Labor role in Civil Rights History in Memphis and the South in the 1930s-1950s.

Best book about the working class South I have read........1998-10-10

Can't understand how this country works if you don't see how racism has been used, especially to divide workers. Honey writes about a pivotal time in American history when the working class was organizing and had the potential to transform the South for workers and African-Americans. The lessons are no less true today. A must read for organizers of any persuasion.

Many Stories About Miraculous Cats.......2001-07-02

This book is full of stories to delight the heart of any ailurophiliac (cat lover). They are interesting, and inspiring and above all, they show the character of cats as only a cat lover can appreciate them. Examples from the book are:

A 1400 mile, 4 year journey--48 days without food or water--A cat who beat up a pit bull--The cat that flew--The cat that repeatedly climbed the Alps--The cat who solved the problem of building the Grand Coulee dam--The cat that was tried for assault--The day the Egyptian army was defeated by cats--The cat who won a war medal--The cat mayor of a New Mexico town and a lot more.

This is a fine read for cat lovers and really shows the traits that endear cats to people.

Hard to do better than this for oldies.......2006-08-18

I just started playing piano for an oldies singer. 90% of the stuff we do comes out of this book. 250 songs can't possibly cover everything, but these songs were chosen VERY well. The chords are "interesting" (not just vanilla major/minor/7th that you get in some books), although a few songs have chords that are clearly wrong, so avoid sight-reading on the job if you can. My singer owns an extra copy of this book to share with his accompanists, but I liked it so much that I bought one for myself. I may even get my rock band to buy some copies so we can play dinner music before the party gets going. There's even Bb and Eb versions for the sax player. It doesn't get much better than that.

The best starting place for standards........2006-07-14

I bought this book after using the 'New Real Book' for a while.
I quickly started building a sizable repitoire of standards at my performances. I play solo piano, but singers and bassists could follow it as well. There are E flat versions too for horn players. I especially liked the Cole Porter and George Gershwin selections.

Great songs and great chords.......2006-03-24

The "Just Jazz Real Book" was one of my favorites. Many of the songs include the verses, the chords (including alternates) are well thought out, the song selection is good, and I've found very few errors in notes or chords. I figured I'd love the "Just Standards Real Book" even more. There's a fair amount of overlap between the two books, but this one suits me even better, as it replaces famous Coltrane riffs, etc. with songs I can actually do justice to on the piano. I must have 20 or more fake books, but this one is quickly becoming my favorite.

Musical Standards updated.......2006-03-09

Exactly as the cover of the book states. Many great standards for musicians and lovers of great tunes to perform at the keyboard. Standard chord changes have been replaced with substitute changes. Music is easy to read. Verses for some tunes that you've heard at shows are present. Lyrics are clear and easy to read. A job well done with the standards of old.

Not Recommended.......2001-06-18

David Bird rightly received many plaudits for his fine series of books describing the Bridge playing antics of the fictional monks of St.Titus Abbey. His Robin Hood series appears to be an attempt to broaden the franchise and, as is often the case, he has brought in others to assist with this while still keeping the David Bird badge on the cover.

In this book, many of the hands were devised by Tim Bourke with the author adding his humour and general style.

This book follows the format of "The Bridge Adventures of Robin Hood" in that most of the hands described take place in a rubber bridge setting and they are of a different character to those of the Abbot series.

I have two reservations about this book. The first is the general tone and quality of the humour. The jokes continue in the same vein as in the first book of the series. An example is the setting in which a bridge playing whore named "French Laura" is referred to as having "gone down" more times than her Bridge partner. I'm afraid that all of this wears a little thin over the course of a book.

The second problem is the way that the settings are described. Of course, the legend of Robin Hood is far from being historical truth and the author must be given plenty of leeway but when he refers to real historical characters and events and misplaces them by 100 years it does work to break the suspension of disbelief necessary for full enjoyment of the book.

Fans of the author's other humour run the risk of disappointment with this book.

Because of those issues, I cannot really recommend this book it falls some way short of the standard of Bird's better known series and as bridge humour, it is below par.

Completely Awesome Book.......2005-09-09

This book 'Securing Your Business with Cisco ASA and PIX Firewalls' is absolutely awesome, I wish I could give it siz stars. The sections that VERY CLEARLY explian problems that you can run into on the internet and the sections on how to deploy a new ASA device are fantastic. The Step-by-step, saved me about $2,500 - $3,000 dollars because I didn't have to hire a consultant to do the installation for me. I looked at the ASA Handbook as suggested by another reviewer, although that book is pretty good, I found this book to be much more simple and to the point.

Waste of money.......2005-08-27

Sadly, this think book is all but useless for anything beyond a very standard configuration of Cisco's (new) ASA devices.

It hardly provided more information than what you get with the Quickstart guide that's included with the appliance itself. That means some simple scenarios with an Internet connection, a DMZ and a main LAN, with a bit of NAT thrown in.

Half the book is generics, such as the importance of protecting your network and other such items. No explanation of the how's and why's. You're better off downloading the technical documents and white papers off Cisco's website. Or even poring over the PIX/ASA command line guide, even if you intend to use ASDM.

A much better choice is the "Cisco ASA and PIX Firewall Handbook".

Good Introduction, Good Instruction.......2005-08-27

Oh if life were only easier. The web must be a lot like the old west was rumored to be. Except that there doesn't even appear to be a sheriff anywhere around. All of us have to build our own little forts for protection against the bad guys. One of the best forts you can build uses the Cisco ASA/PIX Security Appliance.

You can, of course, set up the equipment without anything but the manual. But this book goes into a lot more background that is very nice to know. It starts with why they might want into your network. (I couldn't imagine why anyone would want into mine until they started attacking to use my equipment for re-mailing and bandwidth.) It then goes into they types of attacks that might be used against you.

It's probably impossible to build a totally secure system unless it isn't connected to the outside world in any way at all. But when your users want things like e-mail, web access and more, you've got to do something. The Cisco approach at least makes it very difficult for all but the most determined bad buy to get into your system.

The author has been working on the Cisco approach to security since 1996, he understands it pretty well and has a good writing style to make it understandable to you. Highly Recommended!

This Book was Great!!!.......2005-08-05

I'm a system admin in a medium size company, 800 epmloyees in 4 locations across the US. Our Security Admin position was eliminated because of budget considerations. I was forced into the role (opportunity) without any training and have been learning as I go. I needed to deploy firewall in all four locations so I bought this book- Securing Your Business with Cisco ASA and PIX Firewalls by Greg Abelar. It was a life saver. Not only was it comprehensive in it's deployment instructions but it did such a great job of explaining internet threats and why deploying these devices are so important. It also made me aware of Host Intrusion Prevention, I am going to go out and evaluate CSA.

I would recommend this book to anyone deploying ASA or anyone who would just like to understand security, why it is neccessary, what ASA will do for you and most of all how it fits into the concept of defense in depth.

EXCELLENT Source for Network Security.......2005-08-01

I've been in the security business for quite some time. This book is excellent. It not only covers network security basics in a very understandable way, but also provides you with a step-by-step process on how to deploy network security, in this case using Cisco's new ASA device. Well done, it's a great read. Hats off to Cisco Press.

Confusion over the book's title.......2007-04-01

The correct title of the first edition of my book is HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF RHODESIA/ZIMBABWE. The book first came out when the country was going through a transition from "Rhodesia" to "Zimbabwe." For one year, the country was formally known as "Zimbabwe Rhodesia," then the "Rhodesia" was permanently dropped. When the publisher reprinted the first edition, it changed the book's title to HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF ZIMBABWE/RHODESIA without consulting me. To add to the confusion, they didn't bother adding a single note of explanation in the book or even a note indicating the altered book was a reprint. As a consequence, books with book titles entered libraries and bibliographies. It should be understood that apart from the different titles on the book's covers, spines, and title pages, the two printings are identical. I have posted pictures of both books on this web page. Two revised editions of the book were later published as HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF ZIMBABWE. --R. Kent Rasmussen

Within cognitive science, two approaches currently dominate the problem of modeling representations. The symbolic approach views cognition as computation involving symbolic manipulation. Connectionism, a special case of associationism, models associations using artificial neuron networks. Peter Gardenfors offers his theory of conceptual representations as a bridge between the symbolic and connectionist approaches.

Symbolic representation is particularly weak at modeling concept learning, which is paramount for understanding many cognitive phenomena. Concept learning is closely tied to the notion of similarity, which is also poorly served by the symbolic approach. Gardenfors's theory of conceptual spaces presents a framework for representing information on the conceptual level. A conceptual space is built up from geometrical structures based on a number of quality dimensions. The main applications of the theory are on the constructive side of cognitive science: as a constructive model the theory can be applied to the development of artificial systems capable of solving cognitive tasks. Gardenfors also shows how conceptual spaces can serve as an explanatory framework for a number of empirical theories, in particular those concerning concept formation, induction, and semantics. His aim is to present a coherent research program that can be used as a basis for more detailed investigations.

Excellent and Enlightening.......2004-07-29

Gardenfors introduces his theory of concept-formation, and at the same time presents a survey of the competing theories and research. He shows a high level of professionalism by accepting that the theories can coexist, presenting the competing theories in their strongest light and letting you decide where to apply each theory. This book is not only a good argument for why his theory deserves a permanent place in your toolbox, but also a good education for anyone wanting to know the tradeoffs in representing concepts -- especially for knowledge representation or machine learning systems. He presents the material in a very logical order so that the subtopics can be consumed individually. And although some of the material is well-known, each chapter presents a series of contrasting pros and cons and synthesizes the information in ways that are thought-provoking and novel. It was well worth the time and money.

A little disappointing.......2004-07-10

If one is to design a machine that can formulate concepts and engage in such things as inductive inference and its corollary scientific discovery, then one must be able to quantify the notion of a concept in such a way that it can be implemented into the cognitive structure of the machine. One must be able to distinguish one concept from another, be able to tell when one concept is similar to another, and understand in detail how concepts are related across domains. It would not be enough to have qualitative notions of these distinctions or similarities, since they must be able to be formatted in such a way, either via coding, language, or electronically, so as to be used by the machine.

This book gives an interesting approach to the problem of concept classification, but it does so only from a qualitative point of view. It is a good start in this regard, and readers will gain a lot of insight into the problems that it addresses. It does not however give any advice on how to implement its ideas into a real thinking machine. Mathematical concepts are brought in order to talk more meaningfully about spaces of concepts, but they are really restricted to metric spaces and not general enough to deal with the plethora of concepts that could present themselves in typical environments. The book should be considered more as a work in philosophy, so those interested in this field might enjoy the book more than those who were expecting a book more geared towards artificial intelligence and computer science. Those readers interested in automated theorem proving or automated mathematical discovery might find the discussion on geometric categorization models of interest, and will find an interesting application of Voronoi tessellations, namely that of accounting for the varying sizes of concepts in a categorization.

By far the most interesting chapter in the book is chapter 6, wherein the author gives a highly original discussion of inductive inference. The ability of human cognition to generalize from a limited number of observations is viewed (correctly) by the author as very impressive, but he is careful to note that inductive inference cannot be done free of side constraints. Quoting the philosopher J.S. Peirce and his evolutionary explanation of why induction is so effective, the author uses his theory of conceptual spaces to develop a theory of constraints for inductive inferences. The main notion in this theory is that of "projectability", which attempts to delineate the properties and concepts that are may be used in inductive inference. The author wants to arrive at a computational model of induction, and he offers interesting proposals for doing so, even if they lack immediate empirical justification.

Central to the problem of induction the author argues is how observations are to be represented. This has been neglected in the history of philosophy he says, and so he then proceeds to outline his ideas on how to represent observations, distinguishing three levels, namely the `symbolic', the `conceptual', and the `subconceptual.' At the symbolic level, observations are represented by describing them in a specified language. At the conceptual level, observations are characterized relative to a conceptual space. At this level induction is viewed as concept formation. At the subconceptual level observations are characterized by inputs from sensory receptors. Induction is then viewed as the attaining of connections between various inputs. The author views the processing taking place in artificial neural networks as an example of modeling at the subconceptual level.

The problem of induction is more complicated than is typically presented in the literature, the author argues. Inductive inference will look different depending on which approach to observations is taken. In his elaborations on the processes of induction, one of the key issues that arises is the how discovery takes place across different domains. The process of conceptualizing across different domains takes place, as expected, at the subconceptual and conceptual levels. The symbolic level is delegated to formulating laws.

An eye opener.......2003-08-12

For anyone interested in the cognitive topics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, this book is an eye opener. The point of view it presents attempts to put an order in what "meaning" really means.

Drawbacks of the book? The lack of conceptualization when it comes to dynamic concepts (treated very superficially). Also, the theory is deficient when modeling the functional aspects of concepts (a "sin" already recognized by the author).

But considering the pioneering character of this piece of art, these drawbacks are just compelling invitations for further research in the field.

A new model of thought.......2003-03-02

Profound piece of work. I am not a cognitive scientist, and this book is a bit technical, but it is still within reach of the motivated lay person.

Gardenfors puts forward a a model to explain cognition that he calls "conceptual spaces." These conceptual spaces are at a level of abstraction in between the symbolic (used by AI types) and connectionist (Neural Nets). But what makes his conceptual spaces interesting and plausible is the position he takes that in this conceptual space, most reasoning is done by evaluating the analog of a distance between two aspects of a perception. Or, we find things to be similar if they are "geometrically" (measurably) closer on some limited number of dimensional scales.

This is easy to follow for things like colors, but he doesn't stop there. He goes on to describe how this explains a wide variety of perceptions, as well as how we form and reform categories and concepts, and shows how this informs semantics and the process of induction.

My only criticism is that some of the illustratios would have been more powerful in color.

Excellent! Conceptual Spaces make sense to me........2001-12-03

The essence of conceptual spaces, as I understand it, is that we can define concepts as regions in conceptual spaces. A conceptual space is defined by axes representing qualities. For example, color spaces are conceptual spaces, as is the tasting combos of sweet, bitter, salty.

Your choice of qualitative measures deeply affects how you understand the world. 'Spose reality is an infinitely dimensional, then we have lots of choices for axes. We simplify and correlate by using all that coordinate transformation and axis projection stuff from 3D graphics! Heck Gardenfors even uses Delauney Triangulation (or polyhedralization).

Six Tenets of Cognitive Semantics, page 160

i) Meaning is a conceptual structure in a cognitive system (not truth conditions in possible worlds)
ii) Conceptual Structure are embodied (meaning is not independent of perception or of bodily experience).
iii) Semantic elements are constructed from geometrical or topological structures (not symbols that can be composed according to some system of rules).
iv) Cognitive models are primarily image-schematic (not propositional). Image-schemas are transformed by metaphoric and metonymic operations (which are treated as exceptional features on the traditional views).
v) Semantics is primary to syntax and partly determines it (syntax cannot be described independently of semantics).
vi) Concepts show prototype effects (instead of showing the Aristotelian paradigm based on necessary and sufficient conditions).

Process of Abstraction, page 191 - Start with a collection of things. Identify and quantify individual objects. The determine the clusters. Step three: abstract the clusters into dimensions. Simple!

I especially liked the notion that a metaphor is taking the spatial relationship of a cluster of concepts in one domain and using them in a new domain to help understand the new domain.
