Book Description
How do women make career choices? What difference does cultural or economic background make for a woman's career development? How do women's and men's career development patterns compare? In Diversity and Women's Career Development, Helen S. Farmer and her associates present a variety of perspectives on career development for women. Their analysis and discussion grow out of an extensive study that looked at high school students in 1980, and then followed up with them in 1990 and 1993. The data provide glimpses into influences on women's life choices and motivation, goals and obstacles to reaching them, and comparisons of women's and men's career development patterns. They also offer insights into differences among ethnic and socioeconomic groups, as well as the influence of family on career development. Using the rich, longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data from this study, the authors examine issues surrounding women's career development, specifically focusing on motivation and persistence among women in particular career paths, and among diverse groups of women. The authors also allow the subjects of the study to speak in their own voices, illustrating vividly the personal processes involved in their career decision-making. This book will expand and enrich the work of anyone interested in women's careers, the impact of ethnicity and family on career development, and how girls and young women approach making life choices. Human resource development professionals will also find it useful and illuminating.

very informative.......2000-10-31
I thought the book was very helpful for the class that I'm teaching and the student responded to the ideas very well. It gave me some excellent insight.
Book Description
No one knew Led Zeppelin like Richard Cole. The band's tour manager for more than a decade, Cole was there when they burst onto the music scene, achieved cult status, cut platinum records, and transformed popular music. Second only to the Beatles in sales for years, Led Zeppelin was rock's premier group. But unlike the boys from Liverpool, the excitement of this band"s music was matched by the fever pitch of their antics on and off the stage....
In hotel rooms and stadiums, in a customized private Boeing 707 jet and country estates, Richard Cole saw it all -- and here he tells it all in this close-up, down-and-dirty, no-holds-barred account that records the highs, the lows, and the occasional in-betweens. This revised edition brings fans up to date on the band members' lives and careers, which may be a little quieter now, but their songs remain the same.
Customer Reviews:
Are you dizzy when you're stoned? Cole is!.......2007-07-13
I understand Richard Cole is supposed to be a first-hand account of Led Zepp's outrageous events, but c'mon. Can he really remember what happened with his girlfriend while he and Jimmy were snorting coke- all those years ago? I can't remember what I ate for breakfast a week ago. Richard Cole tries to entertain us but it's a weak attempt at best, especially the bits where he shares his women with the band. Try the other way around, squire. I gave Stairway a 3 star only because, like it or not, Cole was the inside man to the mania and probably witnessed most of what he wrote about. Give credit where it's due. The rest was probably made up while he was on the loo.
Led Zeppelin Uncensored.......2007-06-08
Excellently written book. After reading this book I understand much more about the reasons behind most of the old Led Zeppelin catalog. I would reccommend this book to anyone that has an interest in this band or rock music in general.
Enjoyable but flawed.......2006-12-13
I've had this book for several years but hasn't grabbed me by the balls as most other music-related books I own. I'm not saying it's awful but certainly no masterpiece. Reading it one wonders if the rowdy Cole kept a diary or something, quite odd since he was normally high a lot of the time, like most of those around him. I can see why his former bosses fell out with him after this book was put out.
There are some big mistakes in the book, one of the most obvious saying that Jimmy was the man behind the glossy In Through The Outdoor, when in fact it was Jonesy and Percy. Other errors include quotting Jimmy as the lyricist for tunes like Kashmir, when in fact the last Zep track whose lyric he wrote was Tangerine, and this was only because the song was a leftover from his Yardbirds' days.
However, the book gives a closer insight in the way most of the band members behave, be it exaggerated or not. The ones who come across as the meanest are Jimmy and Bonzo - not that it's surprising, especially in the latter's case. Robert Plant is portrayed as quite prepotent, and while it may be true to a certain extent, there's hardly any doubt that Richard Cole not getting along with him may have also influenced the way Percy is described on the book. The quite one (John Paul Jones) doesn't get a lot of attention, probably cause he avoided most of the band's limelight and reckless behaviour. Pagey comes across as distant and kinky, which is hardly surprising.
The many atrocities the band did, especially in their early tours, get plenty of ink and I certainly could have done without it. Not that it outrages me though. One thing that struck me is the events leading to Cole's arrest in Italy, apparently due to the police having mistook him for a guy responsible of a terrorist attack down there. Was this true or not?
In any music-related book is always interesting to see photos of the group it's written about, and this one is no exception. The pics are really great though all are in b/w and the quality of some hasn't aged too well, you know.
All in all, an enjoyable reading nonetheless, despite its many flaws.
3/5.
I had a hard time finishing it due to Richard Cole's arrogance.......2006-12-13
Led Zeppelin Uncensored falls far short of any expectations I had. Instead of getting a clear depiction of one of the greatest rock bands to ever walk the earth, I have to muddle through the insanely overly self important arrogance of their freaking ROADIE. I thought this book was supposed to be about Led Zeppelin??? It certainly appears so from the title.
At one point in the middle of the book Richard actually expresses contempt that he was never offered royalties from their record sales. I almost threw the book out the window! I myself have played in what would be considered a very successful band for the last 12 years. Not the likes of Zeppelin but I've made a very comfortable living this way. If our tour manager EVER came at us for royalties we would have kicked him and all of his bags off the bus quicker than you can say "drug induced delusion".
I'd be lying if I said there weren't a couple interesting stories. It's just too bad he's the one telling them.
This book is about Richard Cole and his ego. It's painful to read. It does not come across as a true biography. Maybe I was spoiled by Motley Crue's "The Dirt".
Buy it if you like, heck, I'll even PAY you to take my copy
Another side of the coin........2006-11-17
I think people who do not rate this book very highly may be missing the point. To me it is an incredible story of how someone who was very deeply involved with the most notorious rock band ever, managed to loose his soul and almost his life, only to regain it by getting into recovery and rebuilding his life. Once the Zep broke up, the members still had there celebrity intact, but the author of this book only had what he had left for himself... very little which is sad.
But one can see how easy it would have been to be caught up in the madness and the excess if you were prone to such things. And Richard most obviously was an addict to begin with.I found it touching to read about how he got to the end of his rope, only to bounce back and find his humility again, instead of becoming another rock and roll tragedy. And would you really expect the road manager of Led Zep to be a choir boy? That kind of life would have a massive effect on anyone.I found Coles insights on the band, and there rise and fall to be straight to the point, pulling no punches. He must have had a hell of alot to contend with looking after those guys and ther massive egos. I found this book to be alot more real than Hammer of the Gods. Its a wonder he lived long enough to write it but im gald he did.

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners.......2007-07-13
I'm not exactly an expert web developer, but I've had some website design/development courses so I do have some background. The reason I'm saying this is since this book is setup for lessons that take 10 minutes long they aren't that detailed. They contain some great basics and refresher tips for html coding, css, and so on but they don't really teach you all you need to know.
Overall this is a great book for more advanced web developers looking to get into the whole Ajax craze. If you don't have a solid background in HTML, JavaScript, PHP and XML you may be left behind but if you're like me and you want to soak up all the knowledge you can this book may be a good opening for these technologies and a great source later when you learn more.
Only good for ideas.......2007-07-01
This book has a decent structure to it. It gives you a good underlying foundation for understanding what AJAX is exactly, and how you will go about writing it. It has a few good project examples and talks about web services later in the book.
Unfortunately, this book is loaded with syntax errors in both the javascript and in the PHP. You simply can't have a coding book with syntax errors. I spent a full week on the first AJAX chapter confused out of my mind because of some errors in the AJAX code that are passed around. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend this book. Two stars.
A great book for the novice.......2007-05-07
This book sums up the fundamentals of AJAX and its methodology in a clear concise manner, following the principles of the Sam's series. Although the 'refresher material' in the beginning chapters is dummied down a little to much it delivers a solid foundation of what you need to understand to grasp AJAX. Unfortunately the author does not cover AJAX pitfalls with as much vigor. A great start for the beginner but maybe a little to low on the totem pole for developers concerned with real world problems like using the back button or fall back techniques if users have JavaScript disabled.
A succinct introduction, better than many larger books........2007-03-23
This tiny book is very succinct and full of spunk...all around, the best bang for the buck, and small enough to fit in a backpack. I recommend buying it if you are strongly interested in Ajax. It has a very good chapter near the end showing how to call a SOAP web service using Ajax.
There have to be better books out there.......2007-01-13
I picked this book up because I wanted to learn AJAX for use in a web application that I developed for my radio station. I already was quite proficient in PHP and HTML, but was lacking a bit in my Javascript and XML skills. At first this book looked like it be a nice quick way to get up to speed on AJAX (and be refreshed on the javascript and XML required) and it was just that. I was able to pull out the basics, but the book severely lacked anything but the simplest of examples.
I found that in parts of the book, the author kind of hovered over the same topic for way too long and explained it 3 or 4 times yet in other parts simply glossed over what seemed to be important.
The example code in the book was somewhat inconsistently written at times and I even found mistakes in it! One of the examples used a PHP page for back end processing, yet he did not include the code on the PHP page that actually grabs the information that is being sent to it.

Book Description
The theme of
Gender, Science and Mathematics is that change agents, such as teachers and curriculum writers, have a key role in the translation of gender equity policy into gender equitable practices in science and mathematics education.
The first section emphasizes that a necessary prerequisite for successful action is for scientists, students, teachers, teacher trainees, curriculum writers and researchers to confront the many different and often conflicting perspectives on the relationship between gender, science and mathematics. The second section presents a number of analyses of the reality of schools, classrooms, curriculum and assessment. Finally, the third section describes a variety of projects that have achieved some success in bringing about more equitable science and mathematics education. Ways are suggested in which future research and action can build on these expectations.
The book provides vivid examples and adopts a practical approach. The recent research and thinking presented has a wide and general applicability.
Audience: Designed for use throughout the world in university and college courses and by policy makers concerned with the gender/science/mathematics relationship.

The Rape of the Forests.......2001-08-07
Australia does not have the strong tradition of Nature writing that America does. One exception to this is Western Australian writer William Lines. This book, the title of which pays its respects to an Eric Newby classic, is the story of his walk he did along a previous version of Western Australia Bibbulman Track which runs south from Perth. Lines deftly describes the every day aspects of the walk but intertwines his descriptions with an account of the history, a rather sad one, of Western Australian forests as a result of greed, ignorance and stupidity. An Australian environmental classic.
