5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended for everyone looking for a job today.......1997-09-24

I strongly recommend this book to everyone looking for any type of job in today's job market. Regardless of your circumstance or situation, this book will grab your attention and introduce you to the concept of the "online resume". The authors do an excellent job of giving the reader strong examples of how more and more companies are using computer technology to screen applicants for available positions by scanning for "keywords" throughout an individual's resume, and why tailoring one's resume' to that technology is crucial for success. Using examples obtained from professional personnel managers and recruiters, the authors convincingly prove their case that an applicant must adapt to the world of jobseeking in the technological resume age and forget about the old resume norms. Writing in plain English, the authors state their case quickly then proceed to likewise prove it. Furthermore, they provide the reader with a cornucopia of resume styles and formats. They even give helpful hints on overcoming past employment difficulties such as prolonged unemployment and how to use existing experience in an unrelated field to one's advantage when looking to change careers. This book will give anyone looking for their first job or looking to change careers a leg up on the competition in today's cutthroat world of job searching.

You'd have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the opening story of Representative John Kasich's Courage Is Contagious, in which he discusses his friendship with Bobby and Eric Krenzke, two preadolescent boys whose lives were cut short by the rare neurological order dystonia, but who always faced their fates with dignity and calm. "Seeing Bobby was never a matter of sympathy or doing him a favor," writes the Republican representative from Ohio. "It was one of friendship. If any favors were done, in fact, he did them for me. In Washington, I inhabit a world of compromise; back home, Bobby reminded me what real courage is." Kasich also writes about the Krenzke brothers in order to spotlight the efforts of the Special Wish Foundation, and in the other 16 profiles in this book he focuses on other people who are making a difference in the lives of fellow human beings because they sincerely believe it's the right thing to do. From Amber Coffman, a teenage girl who organized a program to provide the homeless with sandwiches, to Albert Lexie, a shoeshine man who has worked his trade at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh two days a week for nearly 20 years and donated almost $40,000 in the tips he's made there), the accounts in Courage Is Contagious are a uniformly inspiring work of human-interest journalism.

Book Description

A modern-day Profiles in Courage about twenty people who are doing heroic things to improve the lives of their fellow Americans.

Now available in trade paperback, Courage Is Contagious is a remarkable document about everyday people helping to reshape America. Written by Congressman John Kasich, the book profiles twenty men and women from across the country who have, through their own courage, determination, and generous hearts, attempted to improve the lot of their fellow citizens. The values they exhibit, Congressman Kasich argues, are the very values we as a society need to encourage and support if we are to end our nation's divisiveness and fulfill its glorious promise. Among the people Kasich writes about are Cheryl Krueger, who started a successful cookie business that puts people ahead of profits by employing women who often wouldn't be given a chance by other companies; and Dr. Jack McConnell, who, shocked by the poverty outside his neighborhood, organized over one hundred retired doctors, nurses, and dentists to create a free medical clinic that now serves over ten thousand people in the Hilton Head area of South Carolina and has inspired similar volunteer programs nationwide.

A heartfelt and optomistic message in a world grown increasingly distrustful, Courage Is Contagious offers hope and inspiration to all who read it.

3 out of 5 stars Um, I have dystonia.........2002-11-30

I'm delighted he has written about TWO dystonia patients...but I want everyone to know that there are over 300,000 of us out here, and dystonia takes many different forms. Most of us do not die..but it would be wonderful to be able to have a bit of dignity when we go out in public! We're not monsters....in fact, the nastiest part of dystonia is that the people it afflicts are invariably of above average intelligence.

3 out of 5 stars It takes Courage and a good editor.......2001-07-21

You get a big morale booster after reading this book (and also a guilty conscience!). The stories are very inspirational, and you realize how much better this world would be if everybody felt like these ordinary heroes. However, the writing style is quite simple, and takes away from the substance. This book needed a good editor to polish the style and give it more of a shine.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrating Everyday American Heroes.......2000-12-04

In "Courage is Contagious," Republican Ohio Congressman - and author - John Kasich presents short stories of U.S. citizens who have performed extraordinarily to improve their communities and the lives of others. As Kasich says, "The most wonderful thing about the heroes in this book is that they are really just ordinary people who one day decided to act."

Congressman Kasich devotes sixteen chapters in his book to stories celebrating everyday American heroes. The book contains narratives aided with in-depth interviews that make the material lively and compelling.

Here are a few excerpts from the book's short story chapters: A selfless Maryland mother and daughter feed scores of homeless people each week in "The Happy Helpers."

"Something Had To Be Done" chronicles the story of a compassionate woman in New York who works to save the lives of children born with AIDS.

In "A Lump in the Throat," a restless retired physician recruits other medical professionals to treat people who do not have health insurance coverage.

Set in World War II Poland, "A Whisper From Above," recounts the courage of a teenage Polish Catholic girl (now an American citizen) who faced the horrors of the Nazis, and saved some lives of Jewish people.

"Courage is Contagious - Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things to Change the Face of America" is motivational, inspirational, and thought provoking. The book is relevant for everyone to learn what we can achieve as individuals in helping others and reshaping our communities.

4 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book About Extraordinary People.......2000-08-19

"This book is about heroes..." That is how Congressman John Kasich begins his book "Courage is Contagious" Indeed Kasich's book is filled with profiles of extraordinary Americans who take it upon themselves to help others. The Americans profiled in Kasich's easy reading book could be your neighbor, co-worker, or even you. Their profiles tell the stories of everyday people who take the time to help others, display unquestionable amounts of courage, and provide an inspiration to those who meet them.

Kasich's profiles include stories of Geoffrey Canada (author of Fist Stick Knife Gun) who crusades against violence, brothers Eric and Bobby Krenzke who suffer from a hereditary illness yet triumph in their life, a young girl who provides lunches for the homeless, a retired doctor who provides medical services to people who otherwise could not afford medical care, a holocaust survivor shares with younger generations the tragedy of World War II, and many other stories of courage that will hopefully inspire and make you want to share this book with others.

If you enjoyed this book "Heroes After Hours" written by David C. Forward is another excellent book profiling volunteers and programs that seem to succeed.

5 out of 5 stars John Kasich answers the question "What can one person do?".......1999-05-01

In Courage is Contagious, John Kasich answers the age old question - "What can one person do to make a difference?" In each chapter, John talks about a person who "dreamed things that never were and said 'Why not?'" Each chapter tells about someone who felt they could no longer let things stay as they are. That person went out and did something to make a difference. It doesn't matter if it was Albert Lexie donating over $40,000 worth of tips from shining shoes to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh's Free Care Fund or Irene Gut Opdyke's saving Jews during the Holocaust. In each case, one person decided they could not accept things as they were and they did all they could to change our society for the better.

John Kasich shows just how much we all could do if we just tried.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to make our world just a little better.

      4 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2006-09-10

I really enjoyed this. It relates back to real-life situations many of us have seen. Lots of good chuckles, and some really good laughs. Highly recommended. Thanks, Larry.

      3 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining, a masterpiece it's not.......2006-06-12

I find it odd that the bulk of the high praise comes from the Seattle Washington area, but since the author is from the same area perhaps not that odd at all. It's good to support your friends but let us not skew the facts.
I thought what the hey I'll give it a read might get a laugh, it was readable, I snickered a time or two. I find it falls far short of 5 stars. I mean let's be real it's a nice short read with no real revolations. Pretty much part of the ebay 15 minutes of fame ride from the wedding dress auction.
Read it if you want it's mildly entertaining book I'd give it 2 1/2 stars at best, but out of kindness and the fact that Amazon doesn't have a 2 1/2 rating it gets 3.

Very fun book to read. Everyone will be able to relate to the things described, not just for bitter old men. Well written and worth your time and money. Easy and enjoyable to read.

GOes into all the anotamy of the body. Then taking care of your voice. No milk, smoking etc.No info on ACTUALLY HOW TO SING.WHere do people get off taking peoples money for garbage like this?Too bad there isn't a minus star thats what i would give

      2 out of 5 stars Orginally I didn't like this book..........2007-05-08

On my first reading, I didn't get into of all the anatomy discussions. But now after a reread and after doing some exercises and thinking about the mechanics of the voice I realize the importance of these discussions... I have learned a lot from this book and am hopeful I'll finally be able to improve my voice.

I'd rate this book as a 4 star, but I don't see how to edit my original rating.

5 out of 5 stars This book is saving my voice........2007-04-02

I love this book! Excellent explanations of how the voice works and what the throat looks like when one is singing properly. It helps to visualize this while singing. Also, excellent life philosophy throughout the book. The author knows how to instill confidence in the singer.

4 out of 5 stars Most useful vocal training tool so far..........2006-11-10

I found this book to be extremely useful. You can definitely tell that Mark knows what he is talking about. He goes over the anatomy of the vocal cords/folds in great detail and explains how everything you do with your body affects the sound/volume of your voice. He has so many exercises in the book that can be used to correct problems and strengthen weaknesses that it's almost too much.

The only reasons I didn't give the book 5 stars are:

      1. The text was large. It still had a grip of information in it. I just expected a book with a regular text size and I think blowing up the text it an easy way to make a book look a little bigger when it really isn't. If you buy it, which I would still recommend, expect it to equal a 100 page book with small text.

      2. He was somewhat repetetive, always talking about how important it is to know your instrument. I'm sure he thinks it's important enough to pound it into you head, which he does.

Overall, the book has really helped me progress as a singer. I've had other singers tell me that they've noticed a huge difference in my ability over just a few weeks.

      5 out of 5 stars Rock-N-Roll Singer's Survival Manual.......2006-02-04

This was the first vocal book I ever read and after reading many more this is still my favorite. It covers a wide range of topics, all of which are important for all singers.

The chapters about diet can help you to make choices about foods that will better your voice. The chapters with exercises on breathing, if actually worked on each day until you get it down, will get your breathing up to standard for singing. The chapters with vocal exercises cover several problem areas. Each exercise has an explanation on why you are actually doing the exercise which is rare, and gives some tips to do it correctly.

The books also covers how your overthinking and different emotions can affect the voice for the good or bad. It's important to read those so you realize that some of your problems (or even all of them) are psychological. Once you get past that you can start reversing the negative thoughts about your singing and you will quickly improve like I did.

I suggest everyone gives this book a read. Even if you don't do any of the exercises you will still learn a lot that will help better your voice forever.

If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business but don't want to be tied down to a brick and mortar building, then this is the book for you. Starting an Internet business could not be easier with the help of the information provided. The book starts with interview information from three successful Internet businesses and then follows that with how to get your point across, the various formats for a storefront, required features of the successful storefront, payment options, and levels of e-business. From there it moves to helping determine what is important to you and how to use that to find the right business for you. From there it moves to the profiles of successful businesses. These profiles are complete with how to market the business, startup costs, skills needed, online examples, etc. It finally concludes with information on how to build your site, get it submitted to search engines, e-mail marketing, using links and pretty much just about everything that you need to know in order to get the business up and running.

Susan Sweeney, the owner of an international Internet firm, has produced a very thorough and easy to understand book. Probably the best book available today on starting an Internet business from scratch, it is a highly recommended read.

                Book Description

Two creative centers of Jewish life rose to prominence in the twentieth century, one in Israel and the other in the United States. Although Israeli and American Jews share kinship and history drawn from their Eastern European roots, they have developed divergent cultures from their common origins, often seeming more like distant cousins than close relatives. This book explores why this is so, examining how two communities that constitute eighty percent of the world's Jewish population have created separate identities and cultures. Using examples from literature, art, history, and politics, leading Israeli and American scholars focus on the political, social, and memory cultures of their two communities, considering in particular the American Jewish challenge to diaspora consciousness and the Israeli struggle to forge a secular, national Jewish identity. At the same time, they seek to understand how a sense of mutual responsibility and fate animates American and Israeli Jews who reside in distant places, speak different languages, and live within different political and social worlds.
