4 out of 5 stars I like this book because it helps people........1999-02-05

In this book you learn to become an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). I like this book because it helps people. This book also shows how to perform CPR or any other tool to get the heart to pump blood again. This book shows very good pictures about EMT's helping people. Some people may not like this book because it may not be their future dream or if the person is evil they may not like it because it helps people.

    1 out of 5 stars Erroneous information.......2000-08-01

I haven't read this book, but the title is erroneous unless I misunderstood it. I understand that this title suggests that a dental hygienist does not need a college degree to practice. In all states in the United States that I am aware of, a hygienist must have a least an associate's degree. Some schools offer a certificate if the candidate has an other health degree, and there are schools that offer every degree up to, and including, a doctorate.

    Thanks for reading my complaint.

        Book Description

This book explores the changing role of trade unions as products of, and agents for, democracy. Despite conventionally being portrayed as politically marginalized and in terminal decline, trade unions continue to represent a significant component of society within most industrialized countries and have demonstrated a capacity for revival and renewal in the face of difficult corcumstances. A distinguished panel of leading and emerging scholars in the field provide a critical assessment of the current role of trade unions in society, their capacity to impact on state policies in such a manner as to ensure greater accountability and fairness, and the nature and extent of internal representative democracy within the labor movement.

          Book Description

Cherished by fans and collectors since its first publication in 1980, I, Me, Mine is now available in paperback. The closest we will come to George Harrison's autobiography, it features George in conversation with The Beatles' spokesperson Derek Taylor, discussing everything from early Beatlemania to his love of gardening. The lyrics to over 80 of his songs, many in his own hand, are accompanied by his uniquely intimate and humorous commentary. Fifty archival photographs of George with The Beatles and solo capture a journey of creative and spiritual transformation. Brimming with the wit, warmth, and grace that characterized his life, and with an introduction by his wife, Olivia, I, Me, Mine is a treasured portrait of George Harrison and his music.

          4 out of 5 stars A touching portrait.......2007-08-12

Although there is not much information about George or The Beatles as we can find in other books about them, this is a touching portrait of the man behind the scenes. It worths. Berenice de Lara Silva

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful........2007-07-11

It takes alot to keep me interested in a book, and this does that, and much more. I have always been a fan of George Harrison, and this is just one more thing to add to his list of accomplishments. A must read for any beatles fan.

          RIP: George Harrison

          4 out of 5 stars A magical, mystery tour.......2006-01-31

This book by the late George Harrison is quite an effort. It is beautiful for the simplicity of it, yet it is far from just being a simple book. Where the book fails in attempting to be an autobiography, it more than makes up for it in many other areas.
There are plenty of pictures for the nostalgia buff. There are plenty of notes, which accompany 'hand-written' lyrics from his many songs. There are funny anecdotes and serious ponderings.
This is an odd assortment of stuff, which somehow works wonderfully, almost magically. This is an absolute must for any fan of the Beatles and for music fans in general.

5 out of 5 stars I, Me, Mine, A Joy to Any George Fan.......2005-10-04

What can I say, this is a must for all George Harrison fans, humorous autobiography, includes lyrics and photos, wonderful addition to your collection.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!.......2005-07-13

This book provided an insightful retelling of Harrison's life as he saw it.

                              Book Description

This volume examines the analysis that was designed to map the development of the television family and assess its current state and, at the same time, to provide insight into the tangled relationships between fictional and real family life. In order to do this, the investigation examines the evolution of the American family, paying special attention to the postwar family, which is not only used recurrently as a benchmark for assessing the performance of modern families but also constituted television's first generation of families. The investigation also traces the evolution of the popular family in vaudeville, comics, and radio. However, the primary focus of the examination is the development of the television family, from families, such as the Nelsons, Andersons, and Cleavers, to more contemporary families, such as the Huxtables, Conners, and Taylors.

The unit of analysis for the investigation is the relationship rather than the individual. Hence, the book deals with the portrayal of spousal, parent-child, and sibling relationships and how those portrayals differ across time and across groups defined by ethnicity, gender, and age. Moreover, the relational analysis is expansive so that television family relationships are examined in regard to power and affect, performance, and satisfaction and stability.

Television Families provides a thorough summary and critical review of extant research, designed to promote informed classroom discussion. At the same time, it advances a number of hypotheses and recommendations and, as such, is intended to influence subsequent theory and research in the area. The book is intended for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and television and family researchers.

Explore a world where a lecherous teenager can become king, a savvy chef can command a navy, and entire cities of the gods lie in ruin. Featuring new classes, races, and occupational templates, BESM d20: Uresia is an anime fantasy masterpiece!

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to configure ISA Server 2004...this isn't the book for you. There is nothing step by step about this book. I have been a system administrator for 20 years and wanted something that would help me quickly setup ISA 2004 and this book didn't help at all. I found this book very confusing and with tons of misspellings....did they even proof read this before they published it? I ended up buying a $99.00 e-mail support incedent with Microsoft to get my server working. Don't waste your time or money on this book.

With the same narrative panache and gift for good gossip that made White Mischief such fun, James Fox turns his attention here to the Langhorne sisters, Southern beauties who wielded a powerful influence in politics and culture during the tumultuous years from the turn of the 20th century through the Second World War. Lizzie (1867-1914) married a Virginian and stayed home, but her siblings conquered Yankee America and England. Irene (1873-1956) married Charles Dana Gibson and served as the model for that all-American icon, the Gibson girl. Baby sister Nora (1889-1955), dreamy and artistic, had a turbulent life scattered with lovers including, perhaps, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nancy (1879-1964) entered English society through second husband Waldorf Astor and focused her formidable energies on politics as the first female member of Parliament and hostess to the notorious "Cliveden set." Sensitive, introspective Phyllis (1880-1937), the author's grandmother, survived a bad first marriage and an affair with a British officer to happily wed the brilliant English economist Bob Brand. Fox makes excellent use of thousands of the sisters' letters to reveal five dynamic personalities in their own words. His shrewd commentary provides context for a riveting tale of family ties, social commitments, and the complex interplay between them that shaped the Langhorne women's lives. --Wendy Smith

                                    Book Description

The beautiful Langhorne sisters lived at the pinnacle of society from the end of the Civil War through the Second World War. Born in Virginia to a family impoverished by the Civil War, Lizzie, Irene, Nancy, Phyllis, and Nora eventually made their way across two continents, leaving rich husbands, fame, adoration, and scandal in their wake.

At the center of the story is Nancy, who married Waldorf Astor, one of the richest men in the world. Heroic, hilarious, magnetically charming, and a bully, Nancy became Britain's first female MP. The beautiful Irene married Charles Dana Gibson and was the model for the Gibson Girl. Phyllis, the author's grandmother, married a famous economist, one of the architects of modern Europe. Author James Fox draws on the sisters' unpublished correspondence to construct an intimate and sweeping account of five extraordinary women at the highest reaches of society.

Lizzie, Irene, Nancy, Phyllis, and Nora were born in Virginia to a family impoverished by the Civil War. Their father recovered the wealth he'd lost by collaborating with the Yankees and building railroads, and the sisters became Southern belles and Northern debutantes. Fox draws on unpublished correspondence between the sisters and their husbands, lovers, and children, and the powerful and glamorous of their day. At the center is the most famous, Nancy, who married the richest man in England, Lord Waldorf Astor. Heroic, charming, and a bully, Lady Astor became the first woman M.P., championing women's rights and the poor. The beautiful Irene married Charles Dana Gibson and was the model for the Gibson Girl. The author's grandmother, Phyllis, married one of the architects of modern Europe. Fox has written an absorbing, spirited, gossipy, and sweeping account of extraordinary women at the highest reaches of society in a tumultuous century.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't make it past the first chapter.......2007-01-04

I didn't know that the author was related to the subjects of the biography until half-way through the first chapter. This relationship allows him access to many never-before studied historical documents, mostly letter between the sisters; however, it also provides him with an unfortunate bias. Within the first chapter, it seemed to me that he was stumbling over himself to extoll the virtues of his grandmother and her family. According to Fox, each of the sisters seems just about perfect in chapter 1, with the exception of Nancy, who is introduced as both needy and powerful and, honestly, sounds like the most (I almost want to say only) interesting sister in the bunch.

I might have read further to see if there was further character development, but I was completely put off by what I saw as the author's disregard of historical fact in order to agrandize his own family. For example, I would enjoy reading more about Nancy Astor, as long as it was free of attempts to surreptitiously convince me that the Langhorne family slaves were really part of the family and they loved their masters. While I'll agree that Nancy Astor reminds me of Scarlett O'Hara, I think it's important to remember that Mammy and Big Sam are ultimately literary conventions and that the image of southern gentility painted in novels like "Gone with the Wind" is just that - an image.

Additionally, while I'm sure it is admirable that his grandfather, Bob Brand, realized that forcing the Germans to pay reparations would breed economic and social instability, he was certainly not "almost a lone voice in trying to persuade the Allies." In fact, one of Brand's colleagues and an influencial economist of the day, John Maynard Keynes, not only recognized this, but also wrote an essay on the subject published in, I think, 1920 or 1921. In doing a Google search for "Bob Brand" and "The Wisest Man in the Empire," it appears that the only record on the Internet of this pseudonym is in this very book. While I'm sure that Mr. Brand was intelligent and influencial in his career, I found the author's idolization of his grandfather to be extremely self-serving.

If you're looking for a book about sisters or about women in history who had to juggle their national and familial obligations with their own desires, fears, and personal weaknesses, check out "Victoria's Daughters" by Jerrold M. Packard. It's set around the same time-period, and there are even five sisters. It's not perfect, but I felt the character development was much more carefully done and the book is not so historically fluffy.

5 out of 5 stars As The World Turns - Langhorne Style.......2003-03-17

This excellent biography takes an in-depth look at the famous, turn-of-the-century five Langhorne sisters of Virginia. The author is the grandson of one of the sisters, which gave him unprecedented access to some never-before-published letters and journals. Lizzie, Irene, and Nora take a back seat to highly visible Nancy (Lady Astor, first woman to serve in Parliament) and Phyllis, the author's grandmother. The author weaves historical and political background around the sisters' stories, which gives the book a pleasurable informational heft and weight.

They started out poor, as most Virginians were after the calamity of the Civil War. Eldest sister Lizzie was born in 1867, only two years after the war. Father, Chillie Langhorne, hit it big about twenty years later by entering into business with some Yankee railroaders. Then he was able to purchase the fabled Mirador, a perfect setting for his daughters. Chillie and mother Nemoire could have been stand-ins for Scarlett O'Hara's father and mother. Chillie was a hard-drinking charmer and a complete autocrat while Nemoire was almost saintly in her beauty and patience. They had eleven children, eight who lived, five girls and three boys. Two of the boys died young of a combination of hard drinking and tuberculosis.

Eldest Lizzie, who grew up poor and was already married living in genteel poverty in Richmond when Chillie hit it big, resented her sister's success all her life---but thought monetary gifts were her due. Irene was a true phenom, a bona fide celebrity, the last true Southern Belle who took the entire East Coast by storm with her breathtaking beauty. She married Charles Dana Gibson and was the prototype of the Gibson Girl. Irene may not have been the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she was kind (a rare trait among the Langhorne girls) and supportive all her life. Volatile, incredible Nancy who married and divorced a Boston millionaire, then married one of the richest men in the world, Waldorf Astor, almost single-handedly tore her family apart with her extreme possessiveness of both her sisters and children. Nancy looked like a beautiful, frail Edwardian lady with marvelously intense sapphire-colored eyes. Looks deceive. She was actually fiery, cruelly witty, and indomnible. Phyllis followed Nancy's footsteps marrying and divorcing an East Coast millionaire and remarrying famed British economist Robert Brand. Phyllis was soulful, the best woman rider in the country, and was a born martyr. My favorite was baby sister Nora, scatter-brained, scandalous, with a complete disregard for the truth fell in and out of love all her life. Men could not resist her. Nora's sisters had to bail her out over and over again, while Nora sincerely said she had made a "fresh start" every time. But Nora was a loving, generous person and a wonderful caring mother (her daughter was the actress Joyce Grenfell), and her nieces and nephews adored her.

"Five Sisters" is a fascinating read, well researched with an excellent index and bibliography. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars I think some reviewers have missed the point.......2002-06-22

There are many reviews of this book posted and many emphasize the shallowness and unpleasantness of the sisters, especially Nancy. This is true; I think Mr. Fox presented these women honestly, warts and all, but I also think that many reviewers missed a very important point.
Lady Nancy Astor was the first woman to be elected to and sit in the House of Commons. She stood for the seat because her husband, Waldorf, having become a peer, could no longer sit in the House of Commons. She was not a good representative, having no real grasp of or even interest in the issues.
HOWEVER, and this is my point, each day she entered the House of Commons she performed an act of great courage. The male members (all the rest) viewed her presence in chambers as an aberrance of nature. This hostility was outright and overt and fell short only of physical violence. In one debate on venereal disease they used the most graphic pictures they could find in an attempt to drive her out of chambers.
Though she may have been motivated more by pride than by principle, she gave other women the courage to come after her. When Margaret Thatcher dedicated a placque in her honor some years ago she emphasized the courage it took Nancy (and still takes women today) to take a seat in the Commons.
Regardless of whatever else she was, she deserves the credit for her courage and the foundation she laid for the women that came after.

                                            Book Description

The indispensable reference for the twenty-first century chemist...

A fascinating and comprehensive look into one of chemistry's fastest growing specialties—sesquiterpene synthesis—Volume Ten of The Total Synthesis of Natural Products focuses on acyclic and monocyclic compounds and sheds light on the structure and makeup of this important class of hydrocarbons.

A useful and practical tool for researchers interested in locating any of the major classes of sesquiterpene compounds, the author will also provide, if needed, a database to the more than 1,600 articles on sesquiterpene synthesis. The ultimate index to the newest experimental work in synthetic chemistry, this latest volume in The Total Synthesis of Natural Products series is also a glossary to the new language of chemistry in the next century.

Look for the following related title in the series:

THE TOTAL SYNTHESIS OF NATURAL PRODUCTS, Volume Eleven

Volume Eleven continues the authoritative coverage on sesquiterpene synthesis begun in Volume Ten, examining compounds with bicyclic and tricyclic ring structures., 1997 (0-471-18874-3)

The research on the synthesis of sesquiterpenes, derivatives of terpenes, a class of hydrocarbons commonly found in oils, resins, and balsams, has grown exponentially over the past fifteen years. With over 500 sesquiterpene syntheses already developed, the literature on this experimental specialty is voluminous, now encompassing over 1,600 re-search papers. Volume Ten in The Total Synthesis of Natural Products provides a systematic and comprehensive look at acyclic and monocyclic compounds in sesquiterpene synthesis.

Reflecting one of the significant changes in sesquiterpene re-search, that is, the increase in compound targets prepared in an optically active form, the present volume includes their absolute configurations, signs of optical rotation, or both.

This newest volume in The Total Synthesis of Natural Products series is an "A-to-Z" look at acyclic and monocyclic compounds in sesquiterpene synthesis, one of the most dynamic areas in the ongoing revolution in chemical synthesis, and is a must for the chemical professional.
