The dominant position of the oil-producing countries is being challenged in the international oil market by the large international oil companies. The large private international oil companies, already comparable in size to the largest of the NOCs, have managed to make significant advances in efficiency in the field of organization, finance, human capital and technology. Their ability to compete has improved dramatically since 1973. Moreover, the availability of new opportunities for exploration in the former Soviet Union has allowed the private international oil companies to expand their activities and lure capital away from the OPEC countries. As a result, the average cost of a barrel of oil produced by the private companies has decreased substantially since the 1970s. At the same time, costs for the NOCs have increased due to organizational inefficiencies. The difference between `low-cost-extraction' oil and `high-cost-extraction' oil, the critical element in the competitive advantage of the OPEC countries, has been significantly narrowed. Unless the oil-producing countries acknowledge the root of their problems, they will end up surrendering their remaining competitive advantage by clinging to an obsolete oil regime.

"Davy" brings back my dreamlike days in the San Juan Islands.......2001-02-24

While this is an inspiring story to encourage kids to "follow their dreams," what attracts me back to this book are the illustrations.

As a native of Washington State, I spent my youth attending summer camp on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, near the Canadian border. While at camp, we sometimes experienced "Killer Whale" sightings, which the counselors used to enjoy frightening us with.

We spent many lazy days on the beach, or boating to neighboring islands, where we would campout, hike, go clamming and crabbing on the beach or build rafts. Although we didn't spend any time in a sailboat at camp, I spent a good deal of time sailing with my older brother on Lake Washington during those carefree days of summer.

Paul Owen Lewis' paintings in "Davy's Dream," with the predominance of greens and blues, contrasted against the black and white of the orcas, vividly captures the essence of the San Juan Islands and the dreamlike state one can experience in this breathtaking environment. To his credit, Lewis lets his pictures tell Davy's dream for several pages, without the help of words.

I guess I just want to say that this book rings true to my experiences as a youth in the Pacific Northwest.

Whenever I read this book aloud to students in my elementary school library, they always listen with awe and then line up to check it out.

Davy's Dream, written by my brother, Paul Owen Lewis, has inspired many school children over the years. It takes Davy on a journey of believing in what he knows to be true, in spite of the nay-sayers in his life. Your children will love the illustrations and even notice Paul's cat, Guenivere on every page! Davy dares to pursue his dream of sailing among the orca. He turns a deaf ear to pessimistic adults and sets out. But -- his dream is illusive and avoids him. A quick "refit" and he makes contact with the whales. Well drawn / illustrated, a story from and for the heart. [ I had the privilege of hearing the author tell about making the book -- his first -- to an audience of elementary school students. ] A great story of inspiration, better than the Little Engine that Could's "I think I can" -- this one says "I'll go do it!"

this is a pretty basic book everything that is in this you could very easily find in the msn help thing or whatever it is called. Im not critisizing msn spaces though it is great place to start blogging, but i think that this book was someones get rich quick scemes. By just copying and pasting it all out of the help menus. Final word skip it but try msn spaces

Dude, lose the music on your site. In IE, your page doesn't display for at least 1 minute on a T1. In the meantime, we have to listen to your choice of music, which may not be everyone else's favorite. If this is the "good use" you are talking about in your review, I guess I won't be recommending the book.

Pretty good book.......2006-03-29

I've been blogging since long before the practice became known as "blog," and I've tried many different blog servers. By far I like the new MSN Spaces the most because it really is colorful and easy to use, and gives you lots of storage. This book is a good book to introduce people unfamiliar with blogs to creating their own blogs. It has lots of cool examples. Next to my first edition of "eBay for dummies," this is another really useful book even for an Internet veteran like myself.

This is the first how-to book on MSN Spaces featuring essential insights and tips for the beginning blogger. It introduces the novice to the fun and social aspects of blogging on MSN Spaces. Some MSN features have changed since the book's publication and some features may be forthcoming. The book was based on "beta." Use this book to get started on your blogging adventure. Superb book, well worth reading.......1997-08-12

Philosophers of Science attempt to construct a normative methodology for scientific inference. As a practicing scientist who follows this field, my impression is that the majority of the published work in this area falls into one of three categories: Critiquing existing methodologies, improving on existing methodologies, and less frequently, proposing a new methodology that is felt to have solved the philosophical problems of the previous methods. Dr. Mayo's book falls into the third category.

In the last half of this century, the debate in this field has centered around the "Falsification" methodology of Karl Popper. In testing deterministic hypotheses, Popper observed that hypotheses can be proven wrong with falsifying evidence by applying the logical rule of modus tollens. However, when experimental evidence is consistent with the hypothesis, believing that this confirms the hypothesis is committing the "affirming the consequent" fallacy. Hence, scientific "theories" cannot be verified, but only falsified. Subsequent philosophers pointed out a number of shortcomings with this method: it cannot be applied to statistical hypotheses (which is the area were methodology is most important to practicing scientists), the Duhem problem- an observation can only falsify a hypothesis if it is conclusively certain, and the problem of auxiliary assumptions- when data is inconsistent with the hypothesis, the test is not informative regarding whether the main hypothesis is false or whether the problem resides in the ever-present auxiliary assumptions that are necessary to connect the hypothesis with experimental implications.

Subsequent philosophers addressed these methodological faults by applying the principles of Bayesian statistics to the problem of testing hypotheses; using experimental evidence to transform an a priori probability of a hypothesis being valid to an a posteriori probability. Ideas from a number of Bayesian philosophers were synthesized by Howson and Urbach in their excellent book, Scientific Reasoning: The Bayesian Approach. This method applies equally well to both statistical and deterministic hypotheses. Also, the Bayesians claim neat solutions to other problems with Popper, e.g., auxiliary assumptions and Duhem. Predictably, other philosophers were quick to find faults with this approach. The most common objections are: the necessity of subjective prior probabilities and the "Problem of Old Evidence."

Mayo, in her book Error and the Growth of Experimental Knowledge, presents an Error-Statistical approach to scientific inference. She confronts head-on three important issues that any normative method must address: What counts as experimental evidence?, How to assess the acceptability of auxiliary assumptions and how to rule out alternative hypotheses?, and How to falsify statistical hypotheses? The first is addressed by explicitly identifying and justifying assumptions of the experimental data. The second issue is handled by the careful design and control of experiments. Statistical hypotheses are falsified using Neyman-Pearson type statistical tests.

The concept of "severe tests" is developed which is very powerful and widely applicable. Experiments are designed to ensure that the test of a hypothesis is severe and informative. These tests are useful in both testing auxiliary hypotheses and ruling out alternate hypotheses. A hypothesis can be confirmed if it passes a severe test (enabling the "Growth of Knowledge.") Mayo effectively uses the concept of severe tests to shed light on the philosophical problem of the acceptability of ad hoc (use-constructed) hypotheses. Common or canonical types of error are assembled into an "error repertoire" which are used to design experiments. When hypotheses fail, these well design tests will yield information as to which type of error was committed. Failed hypotheses are subsequently improved by applying the Peircean idea of "listening to error patterns."

Deterministic hypotheses are brought into this framework by the observation that in testing such hypotheses, inevitable approximations, inaccuracies and uncertainties enable the application of standard statistical tests. Also, Mayo's Error Statistical approach seems to address many of the other shortcomings of both Popper and the Bayesians. Perhaps the most important aspect of Mayo's methodology to practitioners as myself, is that these principles are of practical use to scientists, as opposed to merely impressive theoretical constructs. Her statement "you cannot just throw some evidence at the error-statistician and expect an informative answer" rings true to any scientist that has tried to draw conclusions from poorly designed experiments. I can strongly recommend this book to practitioners of both the "hard" sciences and certainly the "soft" sciences where methodology is of critical importance.
