Customer Reviews:
Looking for a career change?.......2007-08-21
This book was a helpful reference and gave some helpful tips and examples of resumes and cover letters but seemed to be directed more towards individuals looking for a career change or those already working within the industry. However, if you're just out of school as an entry-level applicant your focus with putting together a resume and portfolio is already in practice. The manual could've had more helpful sections for entry-level.
Career quest.......2002-11-20
Fashion Careers has been an extremely useful tool for graduating seniors and an excellent reference for those seeking new opportunities in fashion and related industries. In these ever changing times within fashion retailing, product development and manufacturing , this book allows individuals the ability to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and ultimately develop a resumé that will help land them an appropriate position in their field of interest. The workbook is particulrly helpful, in that it allows the opportunity to xerox and reuse worksheets as one evolves through their chosen career path.
I recommend this book to all individuals thinking about or actively involved in a job search.
Helped me land a great job!.......2002-11-16
I purchased this book after being downsized as a retail buyer. I used the book to help me focus on what my skills were, and to give me tips for writing a punchier resume. The book was easy to use and yielded great results. I am working again, this time in sales and earning a higher salary. This is a book that will stay on my bookshelf!
Superb College Text for Fashion Career Planning Courses.......2002-11-10
What a joy to find an industry specific text for use in "Career Planning" courses for college students majoring in Fashion Merchandising and/or Fashion Design. While there is no shortage of "Career Planning" texts or workbooks per se, this is the only one we have seen that so perfectly fits the requirements of students seeking appropriate Fashion Industry related examples of everything from writing an effective resume, to cover letters, to interview techniques, to thank you letters following an interview.
The workbook exercises have proven especially useful in helping students identify and focus on specific areas of career opportunities within the Fashion Industry, as well as where and how they might begin their job search/careers. The text also includes useful reference lists of Fashion Industry websites and professional organizations.
As a Fashion Merchandising and Career Planning instructor, I would highly recommend this book for consideration as a required text for Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design students.
Not alot of bang for your buck.......2002-02-02
I purchased this book expecting a decent sized paperback. I was very disappointed to see that it was spiral bound with a laminated cover and pages that looked like they had been xeroxed. The content of the book is OK if you already have a job in the industry, but if you are looking for something entry level like myself, you will be disappointed. My advice? Don't waste your money, you can find all of the information in this book on the internet.

entertaining and full of good intentions, but please..........2004-09-28
... as usual good intentions pave the way to hades. I reviewed the french part of it, and although it is mostly accurate it becomes hairy for colloquial expressions that you definitely CANNOT translate - the autochtones just DO NOT use such expressions. Other than that I found a few syntax and spelling booboos and also a few typos (e.g. words or letters missing), but the whole thing was good humored and yes, funny! However I do not recommend anyone to practice it in the streets of Paris. For the next edition (mine's 1987) get help!

Customer Reviews:
Not enough information.......2007-01-15
It's a good book but I expect more. The tips are good but too basic, everyone with common sense should have figured it out. I need more tips on on how we can make a sound overall investment from the studio and how we can sell the studio and employee the operators. It's OK but should be more elaboration on the experience.
Good Book On The Basics.......2006-10-25
I thought this book and the author did a good job addressing the fundamentals of running a Recording facility, from simple explanations about contract agreements to how to potentially deal with different customer recording needs, I've glanced at other books on this topic and believe me, I literally fell asleep in the bookstore, this is a one of a kind on the subject, like my other reviews, I like to keep things simple to understand and to the point, keep this book nearby while you take a nap in your studio, because when you wake up, you'll fell better about conducting business and better understanding your client's recording needs. GOOD WORK TOM IN KEEPING IT SIMPLE !!!!
This book delivers........2006-07-09
I wanted to trun my home studio into a money maker. I didn't know the first thing about running a studio, although I do own three pizza shops. The tips in here even helped with my Pizza business.
The guy who rated this book three stars must be illeterate. CLEARLY this book is aimed at the beginner and intermediate who wants to turn his dream into a reality. The fact that this reviewer admits to having TEN YEARS experience as a studio CLEARLY tells you just how good this book is.
Even though this guy has TEN YEARS experience, he STILL learned something. Maybe if he bought this book in the first place he wouldn't still be searching for ways to make money with HIS studio?
Here is what I can tell you, if left to my own devices I would still be focusing on musicians and bands as my only source of studio income. I am not exactly going to put MCA out of business but in the 6 months I have owned this book and practiced the principles inside, my own studio now routinely brings in about $6K a month.
Not bad for a Pro Tools LE home studio. Tom's book has enabled me to rent commercial space, upgrade my gear and now spend a little bit of cake on some advertizing. I even learned how to get some free advertizing for myself.
As you will read, even the pros admit to learning from this book. I recommend MAKE MONEY WITH YOUR STUDIO very strongly.
Guidelines for beginers.......2006-06-15
The book got a lot of good tips about the theme, but for someone that has more that ten years in the music bussines is so basic. Beware, i may tell you by experience that the book has only guidelines, hell would be if you follow by the line the things that it says
Great and to the Point !!!!.......2006-03-20
This book is short and to the point. If you would like start up information on how to make money with your home studio then this is the book for you. This book gives you everything from suggested pricing to sample invoices. This book is informative, easy to read, and cheap. What more can I say?

Conversations with Anne Rice: An Intimate, Enlightening Portrait of Her Life and Work
ASIN: 087972708X |
Book Description
This anthology argues for the serious study of the literary oeuvre of Anne Rice, a major figure in today’s popular literature. The essays assert that Rice expands the conventions of the horror genre’s formula to examine important social issues. Like a handful of authors working in this genre, Rice manipulates its otherwise predictable narrative structures so that a larger, more interesting cultural mythology can be developed. Rice searches for philosophical truth, examining themes of good and evil, the influence on people and society of both nature and nurture, and the conflict and dependence of humanism and science.
Customer Reviews:
An unchartered decent through Rices literature........2001-03-11
The gothic world of Annne Rice is an absolute must have for both fan of the gothic, vampirism or scholar. The anthology is A direct rout into the marvellous world behind the authour. Not only does it convey an unchartered depth of her literature, but is also A direct approach to A more academic criticsim. This book is of universal appeal because it charts A thought provoking desent through her key best sellers. For any reaserching vampirism especially, or just fasinated by this tallented writer this book is essential. It provides integral essays which traverse themes of anthrapology, in which is discussed how |Rice's characters assume A place in modern society, through to her more historical novels. But more invaluable are the essays which discuss her infamous vampire characters. In these essays is disclosed the intrinsic roots of vampirism and the gothic, linking back to writters of the Romantic epoch. They also provide A rich source of information, which deals with the more academic side of the gothic as well as A direct insight into the novels themselves. It is well researched, astute and perceptive. With Rice's work rapidly becoming recognised for its academic appel this book provides A critical idiom of her work and deserves A place on the shelf of any avid fan of the gothic, vampirism, or who is just enchanted by the pen of this literary sorceress.
The G.W.of Anne Rice is a stunning look into the mind of A.R.......1999-02-04

Haunted City: An Unauthorized Guide to the Magical, Magnificent New Orleans of Anne Rice
ASIN: 1560251476 |
Amazon.com
This is an intriguing concept for a book of photo interviews. But then, award-winning documentary photographer Jana Marcus has always been drawn to the fringe; And one of her earlier collections was entitled Midnight in Manhattan: A Decade of Subcultures and the Alternative Scene. In the Shadow of the Vampire, her first book, assembles portraits of and interviews with the devotees and disciples of the Queen of Vampirism herself, Anne Rice. And who are these people? Office administrators, translators, shop owners, students, and the more flamboyant (blood drinkers, S&M'ers, role-playing gamers).
"Her books allow people to think about their place in society and identify their feelings through her characters' exploration of unconventional lifestyles," she opines. "It is extraordinary how many people I've spoken to who had never read a book before they read an Anne Rice novel." Ever think of Anne Rice as an inadvertent champion of literacy? As may be expected, the reflections are a mixture of the banal and the more thought-provoking. The phenomenon of Anne Rice's celebrity is after all--well, phenomenal. The enormity of her appeal has given birth to the annual Gathering of The Coven Ball in New Orleans, movies, an Anne Rice tour company, a perfume line, a Lestat wine, and T-shirts emblazoned with an MRI of Rice's brain. And if all that leaves you colder than sleeping alone in a casket, then you might want to pick up a copy for great tips on wardrobe and make-up.
Customer Reviews:
first hand.......2006-06-20
i am in this book as well and would like to say that the demographic that it covers is indeed accurate and diverse. i attended anne's booksigning for "violin" just minutes after i attended my own at britton trice's store. anne herself asked if our intentions were pure by participating in this conglomeration, and i assured her that we were sincere indeed. she read and embraced the book, and that's all the proof i need. it was a pleasure being involved with jana and the others back in '96 and '97; truly an experience that i will forever cherish.
I was there........2005-08-26
This book features stories and photography of people and events around the 1995 Memnoch Ball that Anne hosted at a home she used to own called St. Elizabeth's, a former orphange and one of the settings of Memnoch the Devil. I was an ARVLFC fan club member and volunteer worker at that party and I must say that this book is a good representation of the people you would have run across there but more importantly it is a window to a place in time that burned brightly and served its purpose in creating good memories. This book and its photographs take me back to those magical moments like any good photo album should. Perhaps you just had to be there to appreciate all the stories this book has to offer but it is definitely worth the read. The fan club and the big parties officially ended in 2000 but we have been having a more intimate Ball in New Orleans every Halloween weekend since 2002 known as Les Temps des Vampires and the Vampire Lestat Ball. Through this event we keep a little of the spirit seen in this wonderful book alive.
A fascinating read!.......2002-11-13
This book gives an interesting glance into the world of Anne Rice fans; however, it may either affirm or disprove the notion that her fans are "weirdos." The book features college students, accountants, writers, exotic dancers, make-up artists, etc. While it features intriguing people from all walks of life, I don't believe it's an entirely accurate view of her fans, and I feel that the book still tries to perpetuate a certain fan stereotype, as though reading Anne Rice makes you estranged from the rest of society.
As a previous reviewer noted, Anne Rice is mainstream. Admitting you are a fan is not a taboo like declaring you are a dominatrix. There are fans who never made it to the ARVLFC balls when they were still going on; there are fans who have no interest in exploring New Orleans outside of the books; and there are fans who detest "Goth" culture but still devour every single book Rice releases. It would have been a far more representative book had it featured a larger diversity of fans. I have met prudes who are uneasy watching kissing scenes on television, yet they read the books over and over again without flinching. Now, if that isn't a testament of Rice's enormous talent and gift, I don't know what is.
However, the book is still wonderfully constructed. The photographs are nothing short of superb, the fan accounts a delight to read, and one really does walk away feeling that maybe those stereotypes are wrong.
Excellent portrayal of a cross section of Anne Rice Fans.......1997-12-18
Jana Marcus did Anne Rice fans a favor by putting this book together. She showed us that we are "normal" (even if the rest of society/literary world doesn't appreciate Anne Rice and her writings.) When the average reader thinks of Anne Rice fans, s/he has the image that the fans pagans, eccentrics and just plain weird. (Usually these are folks that only know the author by her reputation only.) In the Shadow of the Vampire dispells this myth is dispelled. In one book, Jana Marcus has been able to show there is a large cross section of society that calls itself "Anne Rice fans." These fans DO NOT fit neatly into a mold as others would prefer, rather they make their OWN mold. I know, I'm in the book.
Only the Wierdos..........1997-12-05
I am a die hard Anne Rice fan, and an insurance executive. To pick up a book that purports to be written about her fans, and see only the bloodsuckers, goths and sub/doms was not a real picture of who her fans are.
Anne Rice's fans are moms and dads, teenagers, and goths. Her fans probably represent every single type of person in the world. She receives fan mail from Catholic priests, as well as those who want to become immortal. Doctors, lawyers and waitresses read Sleeping Beauty. Anne Rice has become mainstream - her work is not on the fringe of anything and neither are most of her fans.
So, my opinion was that the fans that were interviewed and published in the book attempted to put limits on a woman's work whose appeal is absolutely limitless.

Customer Reviews:
The usual.......2006-04-12
Let me start off by saying that you don't actually need a strategy guide to complete Tycoon City: New York. The game basically plays itself, and you'd have more problems with technical issues (eg, crashes) than actually not being able to complete mission objectives. Which makes this book kinda redundant, basically.
Nevertheless, this guide still serves well as a secondary resource, especially if you're looking for a complete list of buildings that you can build in the game. Take note, however, that there're some variances between what was written in the book and the game. The Loews Cineplex, for example, is simply called the Movie Cineplex in the guide, so you may find yourself slightly confused if you use it extensively.
This book also covers all the opportunities, which is what you'd expect for an official guide. Unfortunately, the coverage on the prize opportunities is a little weak, often ignoring the details, and at times, listing the wrong rewards for them. The book also mentions that completing opportunities is compulsory for unlocking new districts in the game, but that statement is erroneous as well, since the key to unlocking new districts is basically to build up to a certain percentage of an area.
On the whole, this is an ok effort for a reference book, even though it's a little mundane.

Book Description
World Order in History argues that historians' ideas about world order have been influential in transforming nation's sense of themselves. Dukes pursues these arguments with particluar reference to Russia and the Western World.
Book Description
This interdisciplinary book straddles the fields of history, politics, religion and sociology, and medieval and modern history. Its importance lies in its contribution to arguments about the meaning and origin of nationalism, ethnicity and nationhood, and in challenging the widely-accepted "modernist" theories of Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and others. Its argument incorporates careful analysis of English, Irish, South Slav and African examples, and suggests finally an important contract between Christianity and Islam.
Customer Reviews:
Unique contribution to the study of nationalism.......2000-03-20
This book has already been criticized as a blatant promotion of the "primordialist" view of nations and nationalism, i.e. the claim that nations have existed as one of the prime forms of human (self-) identification and organization since time immemorial. Such criticisms are, I think, not entirely on the mark. What Hastings does in this book more than anything else is challenge the incredibly structural/functionalist view that nations and nationalism are simply a by-product of industrialization and the increasingly complex division of labor in human societies-a model constructed and most extensively explained by Ernest Gellner. While useful and interesting, Gellner's model often has to bend and fold historical facts to make them "fit." In fact, Hastings takes Gellner's rigid model and applies it to early medieval England, where shows that according to Gellner's criteria, one can even speak of a nascent English nation in the era of the Venerable Bede and King Alfred. The most important point Hastings makes is to fault the strictly modern view of national development as overly simplistic. Nation formation and national identity are actually long-term historical processes which, although closely tied to industrialization and modernization, were and are not strictly bound to the latter nor always dependent on them. Although I don't necessarily agree with all of Hastings' conclusions, nor even his analytical methods, I think this is a very interesting and useful contribution to the scholarly literature on nationalism.

The characters in these pages, from scientists and engineers to academics, entrepreneurs, and emergency workers, take us into a fascinating world of inquiry and discovery. Their stories reveal where our greatest vulnerabilities lie and where our best hope deservedly shines through. They show why the systems we rely on to protect ourselves can also be exploited by others to create catastrophe -- and what we can do to outsmart the terrorists. We have ample proof that terrorists will go to great lengths to understand how our technologies can be put to destructive use. Now it's time to ask ourselves a question: Are we willing to let them keep beating us at our own game? For the brilliant and colorful innovators in these pages, the answer is no.
Among them are Eric Thompson, an expert digital code breaker instrumental in deciphering hidden Al Qaeda messages; Mike Stein, a New York City firefighter turned technologist who is working to overcome the numerous communications failures of 9/11; Eve Hinman, who conducts structural autopsies at the scene of explosions, including the Oklahoma City bombing, in order to develop more blast-resistant designs; Ken Alibek, the infamous architect of the former Soviet bioweapons program and now an American entrepreneur working in the business of defending his adopted country from bioterrorism; Kris Pister and Michael Sailor, university researchers developing sensors no larger than a speck of dust; Rafi Ron, former head of security for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and now a leading strategist on U.S. airport security; Tara O'Toole, who stages doomsday bioterror scenarios in order to craft better biodefense systems; and Jeff Jonas, a high-rolling Las Vegas software entrepreneur whose methods for spotting casino cheats might just have uncovered the 9/11 plot.
Readers of
SAFE will come away understanding the unique challenges posed by technological progress in a networked, and newly dangerous, world. Witnessing the work of this gathering force of innovators up close, they'll be inspired by the power of the human intellect and spirit -- and realize how important the contributions of individual citizens and communities can be.

Customer Reviews:
Well thought out plans for today.......2006-02-27
This is an excellent book to inform persons with above average intellect regarding modern technology's ability to keep us safer in today's world. Every chapter is interesting and, it seemed, every sentence is packed with information. The book approaches safety from many different areas, and probably every person interested in the overall topic will say "Ah, I didn't think of that." Take your time reading this one, as there is so much information regarding the people and their ideas in several areas. My possible only complaint was there may have been too much information to digest - my reason for only giving it a four...
All the high-level risks and efforts to protect the public.......2005-06-05
It's difficult to easily peg the appropriate place for Safe: The Race To Protect Outselves In A Newly Dangerous World. It is equally important to health libraries, political and social science collections, and surveys of terrorism. It's the first to explore the work being done around the world in areas of security and defense, and the mechanisms which might thwart efforts to increase safety in the world. Safety covers all the high-level risks and efforts to protect the public in a post-911 world.
What We Should Know About Our Methods for Combatting Terror.......2005-02-03
For the reader interested, but not expert in technologies, this is a fascinating account of the wide range of methods available or under development for combatting the terrorist threat. Some of the information is quite surprising, revealing the inadequacies of some conventional wisdom about appropriate ways of preventing or responding to terrorist attacks and ways in which we fail to take full advantage of familiar tools. Most impressive is the eminently readable manner by which the authors have made many advanced technologies and systems understandable to the lay reader. This will be a valuable reference book to assist the reader in the future to process news and discussions of public policy.
Interesting Information!.......2005-02-02
This book is filled with fascinating facts about our attempts to stop terrorism. I would like to thank the wonderful people that we read about in this book for making our country a safer place!
