Bookman takes a detailed look at the goals and motivations of high-income middle-aged women who want to enter the labor force after having spent most of their adult lives tending their homes, raising children, and volunteering in the community. The book examines the supply of their labor, their incentives, their motivations, and the fears they face as they evaluate their future options. Bookman also discusses the demand for their skills by reviewing the opportunities available to them in the labor market and detailing what they can realistically aspire to and what obstacles they are likely to encounter. By describing the changes in the workplace that are likely to affect middle-aged women, the book offers a compelling labor market study with regard to this unique group of workers. Bookman makes four major contributions to the literature on women's studies issues in her book. First, she focuses on middle age by addressing the needs and concerns of this booming age bracket. Second, she introduces the concept of the Third Career, in which women want to be employed but not in a demanding or stressful career. Instead, they prefer part-time work or work with greater flexibility, and they are willing to sacrifice income in order to achieve these objectives. Third, the book uses the concepts of shadow skills and human capital to describe the demand for middle-aged female labor. Finally, the book analyzes the possible economic losses and gains to society when middle-aged women enter the labor force, concluding that the net contribution to the economy is positive.

This book is very profound! I read it when it first came came out in 1992. I was in a relationship at the time and I knew it was the wrong one , but stayed anyhow. After reading this book, there were paragraphs that were such eye openers! I lost the book in a move and have always wanted another copy, so I am grateful I was still able to find one on Amazon.com! The book helped me to understand clearly the relationship I was in and what the problems were and why I shouldn't procrastinate anymore in leaving. Problems I didn't have the answers to! I found myself underling many areas in this book that so related to what I was going through. Some mine and some his! When we are in an unhealthy relationship, we don't always understand why we stay. Through reading this book, I also discovered that I was also afraid to commit, but never realized it at the time! Years later I found myself quoting things out of this book to others who were commitment phobics. The book left an ever-lasting impact on me and I hope it will for you to!

For people who are wondering whatever happened to romance.......2000-04-01

_Come Here, Go Away_ is a book for adults who find that they are unable to have intimate relationships. It seems to go a little too far in that the author attempts to cover both people who *have* relationships but aren't able to communicate fully with their partner, and people who haven't had relationships for many years or have never had a relationship. And I feel these are two quite different problems. It also deals with diverse issues like drug addiction and memories of childhood sexual abuse... like I said, it tries to do too much.

What's good in this book, if you're a person who hasn't had a relationship in years, is that it uncovers the lies you may tell yourself and the games you may play to avoid being close to other people. It also tells how to overcome these difficulties. If you're a person who hasn't had an intimate relationship in years (and over 1/3 of the U.S. adult population hasn't, by the way) then this book is definitely worth reading.

Excellent content - criticism surprising.......2007-06-25

Criticism of this text as not good for people with little background is somewhat surprising. It begins rhythm with the idea that music is organized around an underlying pulse, then introduces basic note values and meters. It begins pitch at the level of "this is a staff." How much more basic can you get? I am an experienced music theory professor, and I find this an excellent systematic approach to music fundamentals. If you can learn, you can learn very well from this book; if you can teach, you can teach very well from it.

My only criticism regards the tear-out exercises. This 9th ed. has been improved so that the tear-outs won't take the rest of the text with them--that was a cheapskate, profit-centered approach to book design. Now they are all at the end of the chapter, albeit lumped together so they still don't come out individually. After students and I have all purchased a copy of the text, I still photocopy and distribute the exercises (now termed "Practice Materials") according to my lesson plans and overall course schedule.

The material itself is still presented as clearly and systematically as ever. As with any course content, mastery of material for many students still requires best teaching practices.

Confusing and not very creative..........2007-05-24

I have had to use this textbook to teach both a Theory I course and a music fundamentals course for non-music majors. The explanations in this book are confusing, don't include visual examples, and are too in-depth. For classes that have substantial music experience, the exercises could be helpful in reinforcing concepts they already know. However, for someone with little or no experience this book leaves students feeling quite lost. There is nothing creative about this text, except for possibly the visual use of the keyboard to reinforce a few skills. You would think something creative would use more modern musical examples, a tactile method of applying skills, and include more helpful visual examples. Also- unless a student is planning on becoming a musician, then they will never have a need for the information they learn in this book.

Satirist Paul Krassner has collected a number of his outrageous pieces in this exuberantly in- your-face collection. The longtime editor of The Realist, Krassner may be a self-proclaimed "psychedelic relic," but Kurt Vonnegut Jr., in the introduction to this collection, asserts that Krassner's writings are "emphatically not nostalgic, but raffishly responsive to the here and now." Puncturing pomposity wherever he finds it, Krassner joyously skewers those on the left as well as those on the right, and while his prose is often indelicate, it's also often hilarious. As Vonnegut notes, Krassner can make very serious matters seem ridiculous, and then his readers can decide for themselves what is serious and what isn't.

Name Drops Rippling in the Acid Rain Puddles.......2006-10-31

I like Krassner, I've long had an interest in the '68 riots and the Chicago 8 trial, and the bigger picture of this unique point in time, when streams of cultural changes, political chaos, and advances in street psycopharm all pooled together, each synergistically amplifying the brew. This book, with forward from Vonnegut, is billed as the collected satirical writings of Krassner. They are presented in reverse chronological order, starting with his eulogy to yippie turned yuppie Jerry Rubin. It's all very interesting bits and pieces, but it strains to rise above that level. There is no shortage of names being dropped, Patty Hearst, Phil Ochs, Timothy Leary, Norman Mailer, Terrence McKenna, Allen Ginsberg.

Well, that's okay. There's a time for linearity. Then there's a time for humorous blathering; irreverent jags just on the periphery of being smart observations on the absurdity and hypocrisy of the human condition. Krassner is no Lenny Bruce, no Hunter Thompson, no Groucho Marx, and he seems to get that. But he's hung with those guys. That's cool. So he can talk about that in an interesting, disorganized way.. He's like an entertaining, old and semi-manic guy you meet at a bar or a show who goes on and on. And it's super-entertaining for awhile. Then it wears a little thin and you make some excuse to get out of there. And that's something at least.

There's a scattered feel to all his essays, like listening to an audiobook on your iPod without realizing it's still set on shuffle. Speaking of which, I am sad to say I wrote a great review, a positive and informative review, of the 30 G iPod and it keeps getting rejected. They say it is too much personal information and not enough about the product. I've edited and edited, I've gotten it down to less than 100 words of personal stuff, related to the product, in a single paragraph, in the middle of close to 400 words of accurate and glowing information about the iPod. But they won't take it. I think because I go into detail about the Shiva playlist I've found myself making, the morbid exercise of picking songs to be played at a memorial service for me if I die unexpectedly. The kind of party where people are really sad, the hurt is fresh (I write "I've just been harvested and cremated. No, wait- make that plastinated. No, no- make that fossilized," it was funny). Music plays, people drink and mingle, and several people independently comment to each other that "you know, Marc would have really loved this, it's too bad he can't be here to see it." That was it, enough personal information to kill my review of the iPod. Just heartbreaking.

Anyway, Krassner's a cool dude, I recommend his writings. I'd give it 3.819 stars if not constrained to integers. Worth a read, though I don't recommend sitting and reading cover to cover. A little dose here and there does the trick. Speaking of which, you've really got to love a guy with the ambition and audacity to get Groucho Marx to take LSD.

Adventures in the Counter-Culture.......2005-09-20

Radical in the Sixties, radical since, radical today. Krassner is one of those rare specimens - a Sixties radical who survived with his sense of humour intact. It's easy to see why. He doesn't take himself seriously, he realises the essentially futile (but essential) nature of trying to change society, and he is instinctively anti-authority.

This book consists of a collection of short stories from various points in Krassner's life - from the nineties to the fifties and all points in between. It's irreverent, sometimes infuriating (sometimes you just want him to talk straight and seperate facts from hyperbole), and thoroughly entertaining and informative.

Krassner hung out with all the cool cats, and he's probably the only one still around to tell the tale. He'd be the first to accuse himself of escaping the wrath on account of his role as a CIA deep cover agent.

Highly recommended for people interested in 'what happened in the Sixties', mind-expanding drugs or radical American politics.

I've been a Flash Web Developer for the last 5 years and this book exposed some really neat tricks that I was unaware of. So if you want to impress your friends, or need help with getting your cert I would suggest you get this study guide. Warning** Not good for a newbie, more of a review.

Not What I Was Looking For.......2005-05-29

I'll make this review short and simple:

This guide is way too basic and cursory to justify the $30 retail asking price. If you are serious about passing the certification exam, I suggest that you have given a lot of time towards practicing actual Flash while also investing 4-5 days in your local Borders/Barnes & Noble to outline the Designer test material(available at Macromedia.com) from as many resources that you can get your hands on. I'd also recommend the book's multiple choice testt that are available on Forta.com, as they come straight from the book. I'm sitting for the exam in July and I will let everyone know how I did. This book was a breeze and I'm hoping that the exam will be more difficult.

Did the job!.......2005-02-14

I bought the book - I passed the exam with flying colors! Need I say more? It covers every aspect of Flash, except the more advanced Actionscript stuff, and gives you a good idea what the exam questions are like. The only problem with the book is that it must have been put together in a hurry, because it's loaded with misprints! (spelling, grammar, and at least one of the answers to the sample questions was wrong.) But all in all, a great book!

This book is only a partial solution.......2005-02-07

I read this book 3 times to completely be sure I would pass the certification test. Though the book has several typos and grammar problems, the book certainly has some value. After passing this test recently, I can assure you that this book only covers a relatively small portion of the questions I encountered.
My suggestion (besides using Flash on a regular basis) is to read more comprehensive books such as "Flash mx 2004 demystified" and "Flash MX 2004 actionscript, training from the source". DO NOT think because you did well with the book's sample test questions that you will have this test aced.

Despite many wetland sites having suffered various forms of damage, there has been a recent recognition that, in some instances, it may be possible to rectify this through deliberate and controlled restoration programmes. Wetland restoration involves a variety of disciplines and interests, concerning groups who are interested in wetland utilization (such as farmers, foresters, peat extractors and water authorities), as well as those who wish to safeguard the site or its wildlife (such as conservationists, natural historians, ecologists and archaeologists). Interaction between these action groups is regulated by planners and politicians, and disagreements are frequently fuelled by an absence of reliable information. In these circumstances, wetland scientists have a responsibility to try to acquire and interpret relevant data in an informed, objective and impartial way. This volume reviews the current scientific knowledge of wetland restoration, identifying the problems and opportunities associated with it. Based on revised and edited contributions to the recent Restoration of Temperate Wetlands symposium, it provides a broad overview of current information and experience of wetland restoration. In some cases it highlights the lack of knowledge available and illustrates how difficult it can be to make informed decisions.
