A Little Bit of This--A Little Bit of That.......2000-06-03

As far as gardening books go--this one is dirt cheap. If I had seen it in a book store I could have read it in ten minutes or so and saved myself the money. This slim book is a little bit of this (tips) and a little bit of that (quips) and not much really of anything. It's cute though--might make a nice stocking stuffer along with some packets of seeds, and there is a good tip in the book about the kind of flowers to plant with tomato plants to keep the insects away that just might be worth the price of the book if it really works. Overall, I have to say that for the price, it's not a bad book if you want to be mildly entertained with gardening quips and wish to pick up a tip or two. You won't become an expert gardener by reading this book, but I doubt if you would be ordering it if that was your goal.

This a rehash of the first edition with little change. If you have the 1st edition don't waste your money. 2003? How about a new one?!

A one of a kind book for guitar and amplifier enthusists!!!!.......2004-07-23

This book is a companion to the Fjestad's Blue Books of electric and acoutic guitars. Hundreds of different amplifier models, their wattages, tube complement, features and prices are discussed. The entrys are simple to understand and also contain a short history of each amplifier brand. While Marshall and Fender are the two most famous brands of amplifiers that come to mind, this book also covers lesser known brands and rare brands such as Carr and Dumble.

This book is a must for the Guitarist and amp collector. This book has given me amny insights into my amp collection which consists of a 1965 Fender Bandmaster, a 1969 Fender Twin Reverb, a 1980's Fender Vibro Champ, a Marshall Mercury, a Marshall JCM 900 combo and a tweed Fender Pro Junior. This book includes interviews with Paul Reed Smith and Mike Soldano.

I would have to say that I will definatley be looking foward to the 2nd edition of this book. It was well written, easy to read, and to understand for those out there who do not possess a great deal of knowladge about amps. Zach Fjestad, a new and upcoming author, definatly shows that he has what it takes to put out a sucessfull book. Watch for other things by him in the future.

Oddly enough, before this new 1st Edition, no such manual ever existed for the vintage amp market. Over the years, buyers and sellers alike have had to possess either a gurulike knowledge of the market, or, as is more frequently the case, rely on conjecture and guesswork to determine what different amplifiers are worth.
So it's with a great sigh of relief that we welcome the Blue Book of Guitar Amplifiers - this guide boasts more than 300 pages and features interviews with experts, a glossary of amp-related terms, a full color photo gallery, concise manufacturer histories, and most importantly, current real market values of innumerable amps, from Acoustic (remember them?) to Zapp (no, I've never heard of them either). Of course, this 1st Edition provides the going price for virtually every mode of Fender, Hiwatt, Marshall, Supro, and Vox, and boasts a section devoted to speaker cabinets. Pretending you know what you're talking about has never been easier!

The Little BookThat COULD!.......2003-01-24

They said it couldn't be done. They said compiling a comprehensive book of guitar amplifier descriptions and values would be too daunting a task, given the huge number of variables to be considered. There must be a jillion amps out there!

Undaunted, Blue Book Publications has made a striking first edition of just such a book. In the traditional Blue Book Publications style, this book offers interesting interviews with industry insiders and celebrities, beautiful color photography of some fine amps, and TONS of information about guitar amps from almost every known maker. (No, not EVERY amp is in the book. Nor is EVERY word in the DICTIONARY. My guess is that susequent editions will be even richer.)

If you haunt the pawn shops looking for guitar amps, you need this book!

This is okay--there is a good snippet about pemberley.com that would appeal to janieties. For myself, I prefer "Jane Austen on Screen"

Perhaps better borrowed from the university library as there are no revelations in this book.

Not Just for Janeites.......2004-12-01

Jane Austen and Co. is an interesting and fairly thorough look at our current culture's obsession with recreating the past through film. The essays are scholarly without being overly dry, and could appeal to a more casual reader. Some are better than others, but they are all pretty perceptive and realize that history on screen says more about the present than the past. Austen adaptations get the lion's share of attention in the essays, but also discussed are loose interpretations of Austen like Clueless and Bridget Jones, as well as other films such as Dangerous Liaisons, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Wings of the Dove. Sometimes the connections between the non-Austen essays with the others seems a little weak, but as a whole, Jane Austen and Co makes for some thought-provoking reading.

I'm a little insulted..........2003-08-31

I'm a little insulted that the previous reviewers have reviewed the guide based on the GAME! For a GUIDE this is actually very well done. I admit you won't need it but that's no reason to give the guide one star when we're asking how good the GUIDE is not whether or not you'll need it. I wouldn't buy the guide either but somehow it's on my shelf.

The guide is nicely done with a nice layout and clear to do instructions. I'll admit that there's no reason to purchase a guide to Zone of the Enders because the game does tell you exactly what to do...but the Final Fantasy games tell you exactly what to do yet we still buy those guides...and for FFVII everything in that is self-explanatory and yet that guide sells like crazy.

Anyway, that would be the con is that it's basically a script of the game if you will. It covers the secrets but Z.O.E isn't really full of them, and the only secret worth getting (or not worth it) was the vs. mode.

Still, the guide itself is pretty good and should you actually need a guide for it (which I REALLY doubt you will) then go on out an buy it. But the game is about as self-explanatory as any other game out there. Still, the guide needs to be reviewed on it's content and that's what I tried to do in this review. There's nothing much I can say. It has detailed maps and covers the entire game with no hassle at all. Still, you won't need it.

What on Earth would you need a guide to this game for? The game is so simple and straight forward. All Guides are good for is walkthroughs, and maybe some special moves, but this game tells you where to go, and there aren't really any special moves. So why buy it?

This Book [Is Bad]!.......2001-04-29

... it vaguely tells you how to beat the game. It is supposedto tell in detail all the special moves and secret gameplay options but all it tells you is things that are already in the instruction manual, or things that ADA tells you during the game. I don't reccomend buying this book unless you are really stuck in some place, which shouldn't be a factor seeing as though the game is so short.

Hi,

I will recommend this book for every Oracle and UNIX starter. Book is more on using and managing Oracle easily and efficiently on UNIX server. If you just looking for UNIX administration book than this might not be the book you looking for.
All in one book will be really useful for newbie to intermediate level of DBA using UNIX server.

Very good for a novice Unix user.......2005-07-18

First, I would like to strongly disagree with one negative reviewer who claims this book contains many technical errors including the one comparing Unix and DOS commands. I have found the book contains virtually no technical errors.

If you are a ORACLE DBA who isn't too familiar with Unix or Linux, this is a very worthwhile book to read. Although it is not meant to make anyone a Unix\Linux guru, it is intended for the Oracle DBA who may lack fundamental competency in Unix\Linux.
This book provides:

1)Unix Architecture and basic Unix syntax
2)monitoring Unix (CPU, Disk, Memory)
3)Network management in Unix (weakest portion of the book)
4)Interaction between Oracle and Unix server(could have been more comprehensive)
5)Unix Admninistration for the Oracle DBA( file, task, and profile management etc).
6)Many useful Korn Shell scripts (and how to create them) for ORACLE DBAs.

If you already have medium to strong understanding of Unix\Linux, I recommend a book which is more focused on Unix\Linux to gain better mastery of the operating system.

A favorite.......2004-05-09

I have a whole shelf of Oracle books and I can tell by the fraying the ones that I actually use regularly to solve problems.

The book is well organized and has become a nice way for me to remember Unix commands. I also used the scripts successfully and I'm quite happy with the book.

Great for the newbie.......2004-01-03

Excellent content, concepts and depth of knowledge. The author explains Oracle as it pertains to AIX, HP and Solaris. There are also many ready to run scripts to help monitor and tune a system. It even shows how to extend STATSPACK.

Unfortunately, not a book that I can recommend........2003-12-04

I'd worked with Oracle 7.x on AIX boxes before but my most recent experience has been with Oracle on Windows. Our production system (9.2.0.3) was moving to an AIX box and one of the other DBAs thought that this would make a nice Christmas gift.

A nice thought.

The major problem is that most of the examples are wrong. The technical editing was incomplete. In the example comparing MS-DOS and UNIX commands, half of the examples are placed in the wrong column. I kept going throught the book, hoping that the examples would clear up or that I could find a systematic error so that I would know what errors to expect. The errors are random and persistent. An erratta sheet would be basically republishing the book.

It sits on the shelf unopened. I have not used it to bring our Windows DBAs up to speed on UNIX because I would first have to unteach them the flaws that they saw in the examples.

The text itself is perfectly good. Excellent. If you know Oracle and you know UNIX and you can ignore the examples then it's a fine book.

But for someone going from Windows to UNIX I predict that it will lead to much frustration.
